What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.
For more information please visit the Official MAGS website (http://www.mags-competition.info/).
Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).
MAGS is the perfect opportunity to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitors get the game placed on the MAGS website.
MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but should try not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.
You are not allowed to (re)use material already created before this competition, you game must be completely new! An exception goes for sounds and music where you can also use free material that is available to the public.
Please do not just enter the competition with a rushed entry (a game created in just some hours or a few days)!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Topic: Only One
This month's guidelines were set by last month's winner Tijne:
There is only one rule for this month:
-There must exist -something- in your game that is 'The Only One' of its kind.
It can be an object, a species, or anything else you come up with, so long as it's "one of a kind".
The game should (but doesn't have to) revolve around this 'one of a kind' thing (or find it useful in multiple ways).
There may be several different "one of a kind" things.
Have fun! ^_^

Winner:
Helme!
Reminds of a Monty Python scene ;D

Let's see if i'll get an idea for an entry.
I decided to try... Maybe if I make myself concentrate on a really short story to be done in 25 days, I would finally release a game. That alone would be a prize for me, ha-ha ::)
Nice Topic... I´ve already got an idea. So if everything goes fine, I´m in.
Sweet I've got an idea. Hopefully I actually manage to make something.

Sorry, just couldn't resist the temptation :)

That was great ;D
It's fine by me. I'm wondering by the way, why did the moderators locked the last thread in which we said it would be best to leave it open so people can comment away?
Yeah. I locked it.
Note that I usually won't [have time and interest to] read through a thread to determine whether it should be locked (and there didn't seem to be obvious hints in that last MAGS thread about this either :P). I usually lock a thread based on the following conditions:
1) if the winner has replied, i.e. he/she is aware of the result; or
2) the winner has started a new thread for the next round already.
Sometimes I'll give it 1 or 2 days more for others to comment or give their praises but sometimes I don't.
(Note that sometimes other mods might have locked a thread immediately after an activity has ended. This is actually not very good as the winner may not know that. Furthermore, locked threads are pushed towards the bottom of the list which makes them even less noticeable. In these cases I'll unlock such threads provided I notice them.)
So, if for some reasons you want to keep a thread open for a bit longer just send a PM to me and it would be unlocked.
I have now unlocked the last MAGS thread for you.

I feel I do have offended you Gilbet, but it wasn't my point. Therefore I apologize and I do thank you for unlocking it. And I know you moderator guys can't really keep track of everything.

That was hilarious, Crimson. ;D
Yeah, CrimsonWizard's joke game was hilarious indeed :D
I just wanted to say: I'm in.
I highly doubt I'll be able to participate this month... :x I've found no time, and it's not looking like that situation is about to change. @_@
But hey, who knows.
Ah, damn, I hope you can make it, it was fun and you almost would have broken the record of 2 consecutive mags. You won once, lost by one vote, and won again.
Sorry to correct you Dual, Wretched had three consecutive wins (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=22522.msg275869#msg275869) in October, November and December 2005
I stand corrected. :D
That's kind of embarassing, but same here, I started making a game almost from the moment comp. was announced, but then a lot of tiresome events took place and I was totally driven of schedule... plus, perhaps I underestimated time needed to put in all I want.
I like my idea and I want to see the game finished, it's just I highly doubt I will make it in time. If I won't I'll probably release it simply as "Short game". :)
Anyway it is good I tried, because that MAGS concept gave me some nice idea and inspiration. :D
Hmm... there's a chance I have a backup plan. I want to try it, let's see if I can make a game in 5 days, heh.
By the way, when exactly the deadline is? is it 00:00 between 24th and 25th ,or 23:59 25th, or else? ;)
Oddly enough, Crimson's and my situations are similar. I may be able to pull something out, though it won't be as I envisioned earlier this month.
I would also like to know a more detailed deadline; for all the other MAGS I've been slightly confused, especially with the differences in time zones. xD
Here is my entry:
Minor Minion (http://www.box.net/shared/h5udlh90ok)
Our hero is one of hundreds of evil minions living happiliy... erm... evily with their evil lord doing evil things.
But one day everything changes and he is the only one left.

Gaming entries must be there before it turns into 25th. A couple of hours before I post are allowed.
Playing Minor Minion, I'm stuck....
Spoiler
I want to create a doll for the princess...
When using the skull with the glove it tells me that the princess wants a red dress (she didn't tell me that, but ok...). Then when I use the glove with Gaxtur it says: I could stain it but I don't know why I should do that.... |-) How do I make that doll? Or better, do I need to? What does the princess want?.
Furthermore, there's a hexagon in the drawer in the basement. Where can I learn more about it or should I just try & error my way through?
Spoiler
Congratulation, you have found a bug! You don't have the information, that the princess wants a doll, but you got a hint, that you should not find yet. You can't finish the doll, before you have the information to create one.

Nicely done, that Lease... :)
Allright... I am on the homestretch, I hope I'll finish it tomorrow (well, tomorrow is today already for me ;) ) and post somewhere around 23:59 24th... just don't close the competition without me, okay? ;D
Well, I haven't had a proper internet connection for a while now, but I wanted to say that I've been working on an entry which will hopefully get done in time, and with some luck I'll be connected and able to post it before the competition closes.
So I guess I'm just announcing my intention to enter, and apologizing for showing up so late for the party. Don't wait up for me, finally releasing a game after aimlessly poking around at AGS for so long will be reward enough.
If I missed a rule somewhere and should have posted here sooner, just disregard this.
Sadly, I won´t get my entry done ... had some unexpected "real work" :P to do.
I´m sorry about that, because I liked the idea: Marilyn Manson and Twiggy Ramirez searching for the
One Chord to find them, to bring them all to concerts and in darkness bind them .... well, something like that.
Well, guess it wasn´t supposed to be, maybe I´ll finish it later. Good luck to the others.

I'm going to wait no worries. You post here when you're done. Even if its barely 25th..
I'll enter something last-second as well. -- Confirmation. :x
11 hours and 43 minutes from this post. :x
.. (And don't expect anything of it. I'm not even going to vote for myself.. xD)
I have a very serious question: is it permitted to use Default template resources, like icon graphics?
I am still afraid I won't finish everything necessary in time, that's it. :-\

And uhh.. I don't know if this is allowed, but this is my pre-entry. xD...
I'm going to bed, and I'm not sure if I'll wake up before or after the competition ends. @_@; If I wake up before, then I really would like to use any time I scrouge up to fix bugs / add anything extra things that I'm far too tired to do.. and if I wake up after, then this is.. an at least playable entry. :D..
And if that isn't allowed then.. again.. it's at least playable! ^^;;.. [I hope.....]
The competition ends in approx 9 hours from me posting this, so I believe. If I make it in time and this is allowed, I'll just edit this part out and update the link at the beginning of the post. ^^;..
EDIT: Didn't make it. XD

Okay, I need maybe hour or so to finish playtesting/fixing, then I'll pack everything up and post here.......

The Deed
http://www.mediafire.com/file/ohm12xt1oko/TheDeed.zip
(~10.7 MB; mostly because of digital music...)
In this game you are playing a young brave knight, who was sent on a
quest to retrieve a magick flower from a faraway place. In fact, his
travel is left behind the curtains, and gameplay starts when he
arrives to his destination. All he needs is to pick up the flower.
But it appears to be not so easy...
Although game is very short, it features 2 endings. First is quite
obvious, second will require solving additional puzzles. Let's see if
you can get both.

The North Crown

EDIT: Had a bug. Fixed thanks to Tijne. I'm not sure what the rules are for this sort of thing so I posted the fixed version separately since its well past the deadline now.
I kind of hate the way it came out. I knew I should have made a funny game.
I would also like to apologize for the terrible animation in the game's final sequence, and the inconsistency in the quality of writing.
Enjoy.
Story:
You play as Michael, a fairly average young man in his mid-20s, who, while walking to the train station one morning is confronted by a mysterious demonic entity.
Guide Michael through his battle with the devil, aided by a one of a kind arcane relic that defies conventional description (and is based off a stupid optical illusion I saw in my psychology text book :P).

Tijne-
Sorry, I'm fairly new to this. The files are mostly identical its just that I forgot to turn debug mode off the first time. Should be fixed now though.
I don't know what's wrong with my screenshots, but I'm not seeing them either.
No worries, I'm fairly new at this as well! @_@;
And I believe that your game is excellent, as is everyone else's. ;_;
Okay, no more entries peeps! Wait till I post them all up.
EDIT:
Vote HERE (http://www.mags-competition.info/index.php?page=voting)
It ends in 48 hours, whenever I find time on the 27th.
Four games, neat! Guess I have some playing to do tonight... :P
Congrats to all on their releases!
SomeSickSelf, you have a good game there; nice clean graphics (I dunno why you refer to them as "terrible MS paint graphics", I've seen games which had worse, and were still playable ;) ), and really good writing.
....and... actually I was stuck there last night... will try harder.
Allright, I finished two games this far.
Ardent Fever by Tijne is a strange one (that does not mean 'bad' ;) ),
Spoiler
reading description I thought it is a drama/thriller, then I was spooked by the sudden explosion during introduction; I had sound voume turned high and wearing headphones ;).
But it turned to be some sort of ironic sci-fi comedy.
To be honest I did not like graphics there much, except for maybe room with many doors (door animation is cool): game's drawn crudely; I understand, however, that it was made in haste (same problem I had with my game).
Main character's walking animation stands out most of all, it reminded me irish dances XD with his hands behind back and twitching legs.
(who am I to judge character animation anyway... I, who used poor overused Roger as a base for my character.... ::))
As for puzzles, I progressed rather swiftly, but there was this disturbing thing about random sayings when you tried to do something wrong or not in time: for example I was trying to
Spoiler

several times and character kept saying stupid phrases, although I was sure there's something important. I suppose it would be better for him to say something like "I don't now why I should this now", or "I should have a purpose to do so".
The ending was somewhat confusing. Well, I've got the idea, but it was so much of a sudden. That illness possibly made sense with symptoms mentioned, but it was not easy to guess it may be the cause, mainly
Spoiler
because there were no clues that these humanoids on the ship never experienced that "illness" before.
The North Crown (or Veeblefetzer) by SomeSickSelf is a creepy one; although it is short I'd say it has a good atmosphere (and
very good text!), and player gets a strong feeling that something terrible is going to happen,
Spoiler
seeing a monster leaves dead animals on his path...
But it is too short and ends abruptly. Actually I didn't get the very last puzzle, I just
Spoiler
was using "trident" on that teleporting anomaly mindlessly over and over again, and suddenly - blam! - I won.
Also the ending sequence is confusing as well.
Spoiler
It is was strange to see how a common guy suddenly accepts the offer from unknown creatures to lead armies against darkness....
I suppose main fault here is that the character is not developed - at all. You simply know nothing about him.
I may make a suggestion: if you take the beginning of the story, - maybe 3-4 rooms before the city, - and evolve it into a longer story, this may end in something much more satisfying. I really liked the style of these scenes. The city scenes were made more roughly.
I am playing Helme's "Minion" now, game's funny but I am getting stuck all the time ;)
Dual, for my own idea and to avoid 'problems', when is it allowed to give comments about the games:
After the voting results to not influence others who are maybe going to vote or just after playing before voting or voting results?
Thanx.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to be influenced by other people's opinion when it comes to games; everyone has its own preferences in visual look and puzzles, and its own level of tolerance for overall silliness of the game ;).
Quote from: Crimson Wizard on Fri 25/09/2009 16:48:15

Me neither ;)
But I remember there have been some controversy about this subject so I would like to know the "official rule" on this...
There is no official rule about this. That's why the controversy started in the first place. I now keep from commenting (other than bugs/errors etc) until after voting. Just to be safe and not influence anyone. But you can comment on any game at any time if you like.
Since there is no rule, I'd say use it at your own discretion.
So long as you don't post who you're voting for, and list a (more or less equal number of) things good/bad about each game, I believe things should be okay..
...And since Crimson is a participant, we know he's slightly biased. ;)
...Though I could just feel this way because I agree completely with Crimson's assessment of my entry's general flaws..... and want to create my own list of comments later today.. xD

Actually I think I know whom I will vote for... and it is not me ;)
Guys, guys. From my "official" side, the comments should be allowed. If it seems better, people can just hide them using [ hide ], but they should really be there.
Well, I just frantically downloaded all four of these today and took a ferocious shot at them. No idea if I'll be able to finish them all in time to vote (probably not), but I did manage to get through The Deed and wanted to remark that I rather liked it. It had a cool atmosphere to it. Nice music. Nice backgrounds. Nice very simple story. I don't think I've ever played a game with only one character in it before, and I found that cool too. Even though the PC was Roger with red pants, it had a really cool fairy-tale feel, somewhat haunting, even. So thumbs up to that one.
The other three, well, hopefully I'll get far enough to formulate an opinion by, like, tomorrow. Like, really fast tomorrow. :)
My comments on the games -- Read at your own peril.
--The Deed--Best: -- Story, Artwork, Atmosphere
Good: -- Puzzles,
Weakest Aspect -- Ending, Standard GUI Interface*, Lack of Animations
Comments:
Spoiler
Other than the depressing Endings.. (both of them Dx), the GUI was the only thing I actually -disliked- about this game. If you had a custom GUI, you would have secured my vote. xD The game also lacked animations in comparison to the other two, though it's not really a big deal since it's a MAGs game and you had the best Artwork.^^;
When first playing through, I thought, "Why is there this huge empty space in the middle of the area that does nothing?", but that was excused later. :x All the puzzles were solvable and logical (Booyah, I got it without any help! :D), the Atmosphere was -very- nicely put together via the artwork music and writing.-- speaking of which, all three of them were done very well. Nicely done Crimson. :D Oh; No bugs found and the game was in the bounds of the rules, so again, Nicely done!
--The North Crown--Absolutely Bestest Best: -- Writing. You rock at this.
Good: -- Story, Atmosphere, Artwork
Weakest Aspect -- Lack of Music*, Making Sense? Heh..
Comments:
Spoiler
There was no music/sound effects? Or did I just not get that in the download? @_@ Made me very sad as Music is very important to me to set up the atmosphere. However, you did Very well with including the Atmosphere in both the writing and backgrounds. If you had any hint of music, I would have said you had the best atmosphere out of all the other games since the quality of the other two were high. Oh well ;_;. Other than a little few bugs, the game played out well. Or so I think. I'm still a little completely lost in what happened. A few parts of the story are still blurry/unclear to me. On the up side, you have ABSOLUTELY FANTASIC writing. And you were obviously within the rules. :D
--Minor Minion--Best: -- Puzzles, Humour
Good: -- Story
Weakest Aspect -- Artwork, Writting/Grammar*, Ending,
Comments:
Spoiler
Aside from the fact that it was made in German, there were a few, what I felt was inappropriate or misleading responses when combining / using items or trying to use/look at certain things during certain parts of the game. That may be due to translation problems though so I excus'd those. ^^;. Other than that, the Ending was kind of sudden and didn't feel very satisfactory, to -me- at least. Though it did make me laugh a little. ^^; The Artwork didn't seem as good as what Cold Mead had, but that could just be me. @_@
I wasn't sure whether the game was trying to have a comical or 'dangerous' atmospheric mood half the time, between the music, writing, and artwork.. so it gave off a kind of confused feeling overall, though individually worked well :). There were also a few small bugs, bugs similar to the ones found in Cold Mead which made me a little sad that those same bugs existed. @_@;
On the other side, the game -really- shines in its puzzles. Very, very creative yet logical, though sometimes difficult, ;). The finely salted humor was also a nice break from the other two more serious-ish games. :D It was more ''fun'' playing this game than any of the others!
Who to vote for? I'm not really sure. All of the games were excellent. @_@;... I think I'm going to go with
Spoiler
The Deed, as the story and atmosphere appeal to me more than the other two. ... ^_^ ... though I wish I could have found a happy ending. :p Ditching a loving princesses and the right to rule a kingdom to become a secluded farmer surrounded by magical red flowers that have very cruel magical thorns...or... desecrating the magical holy-like land the flower grew on0 just to give one of the flowers away a 'wedding present'..... .... ...yeah both are sad. ;_;
Well, I don't think it will change the result of the voting, but I just updated Minor Minion.
I hope I corrected all typos and grammar problems.
Ah, yes, I finished Minor Minion yesterday.
Game was fun, but required some non-standart thinking. Or maybe my mind was tired after making my own game, don't know. Anyway, I had to use couple of hints from Leon's walkthrough. ;)
Gameplay itself made an ambivalent impression. It was very funny in general, but with some quite gruesome episodes.
Only bugs I found were related to character sayings about using two items together, for example using "shrunken head" made character say same line twice. But that were not much distrbing anyway.

I just wanted to stop by to thank everyone for their feedback and give a special thanks to everyone who had such nice things to say about my writing.
In response to Tijne, yes, you downloaded the right version, or rather there is no version of the game that includes music or sounds. It's unfortunate, I agree, but I was so desperate to get the game done, and I just didn't feel like I had the time.
Here's my comment on this months mags games, in release time order:
Minor Minion:
Pros:
The best puzzles plus and a bit longer game play then the others.
Humor: funny animations and characters, an all round amusing game.
Cons:
None
Ardent Fever:
Pros:
Humor; nice scifi parody style atmosphere.
Very nice idea that phlebotinum cursor, imprinting an object into your inventory in stead of taking it.
The doors and the imprint-an-object got cool soundfx.
Cons:
Several elements are not used which confused me while playing
(maybe next time change these into not being a hotspot before release when there's time left.)
The deed:
Pros:
Nice story with that focus on that flower.
Cons:
Short and quite easy solvable game.
No animations
The north Crown:
Pros:
A strange but cool way of using the teleporting element also as a puzzle by using the trident.
Like said before: good writing.
Cons:
Bit to short.
No music, music would really have even more increased the atmosphere.
All four games did comply with the rule: Only One:
Minor Minion: only one "person" gremlin is left to beat the evil villagers [the minion]
Ardent Fever: only one person is able to save the ship [stow-away]
The Deed: only one object needed to finish [rose]
The Northen Crown: only one ruling puzzle-element to finish the game [trident]
My favorite this time was Minor Minion
Last thing:
All four games were great, congrats to all four of you!
Entering this contest and creating such games within a week makes you all a winner ;)
And now, voting results please... ::)
Voting results:
Winner is Helme.
A big number of votes for all candidates there!
Helme, check your pms..
So, lost an election (the results of the parliamentary election in germany...) and won an election.
Thanks to the voters and thanks to the good competitors!
Congratulations Helme! :D
Congrats on the win Helme!
Looking forward to the next guidelines, as I might have som time next month for a new game.
Congrats Helme!
Congratulations !
I only wished that game had a little more varied music, that was the one weak point there in my opinion. Sorry, didn't tell that before, maybe you consider it for future ;)

I will correct this: it is not "only one", because 1 object needed to finish, it is "only one", because only one flower left.

I liked the idea, to only use one theme and make some variations. But you are not the only one who told me, that the music was a bit boring. I would have had dozens of short songs, that would have worked, too.

Congrats on the win Helme!
Looking forward to the next guidelines, as I might have som time next month for a new game.
I already sent my idea to Dualnames.

Actually I think it could be better if these compositions were
longer, at least twice. That's my opinion, but I guess they sound boring not because they are similar, but because they sound too much repetitive (a very short piece repeated over and over again).
Okay, I'm going to start the Competition on 1st.
In the meantime, commenting on the games, I found all of them(not an expression, I really do mean it), to be of high value. I loved the graphical representation of Tijne, the story of SSS, and the overall idea of Crimson. Though Helme's entry seemed more compact. More like a complete game. That was obvious in the votes where he got a difference from the rest of you guys. Overall, I find the competition a success, and four entries are a rare these days. Thanks to everyone for partecipating, I hope I've been a good host this month.
Oh, and to settle something once and for all:
1)Comments are allowed at all times but should be hided before and while the voting.
2)Partecipators are allowed to patch their games even while the voting but I should be informed via pm or here.

That is a REALLY useful bit of info! I wished I knew that ;) But then, question is, what can be included in that "patch"? Bug fixing is obvious, what about enhancing graphics a little etc?
Also, maybe it is better to put this small rule on MAGS website.
Must agree, I enjoyed all the games and frankly couldn't believe how high the standard was considering the time frame they were made in. All were good and had something unusual (in a good way ;D) about them marking them stand out in their own way.
However, ultimately Helme's just felt more like a complete game (as Dual said above) and, for me, that was what made it stand out. Not to take away from the others though, I would be particularly interested to see a "complete" version of "The North Crown" and "Ardent Fever" given more time etc.

Only bug fixing. I know how hard is it to create a game and have it bug-free. So bugs, glitches and anything that has to do with coding only can be changed. As long as it is said so.

Fully agreed.
