Title: Make Music 8/29 - 9/4
Post by: on Sun 29/08/2004 06:06:12
OK.

The competition is to create final end-boss music for a contra-style game. Think of: one man vs. a huge bad-ass mofo alien that has about 5000 bars of energy, 10 attack modes, and has 3 different forms. Enjoy.

Yay, I've always wanted to make boss music.  And failed every time I tried  ;D
Mleh, I'll give it a go.

my amazing synthesizer studio right now, so I definitely have the oportunity to do some music-making! Woohoo!

Hey, he didn't put the period at the end of the sentence, so I can finish his statement, right? RIGHT? Oh, heck.

Olé!

I just saw this competition and I decided to make a little tune.
I made it really fast so it's crap.
Well, at least I'm the first one to enter...

Download and listen to "Boss Music".

No direct linking :'( but you'll find it.

(I have no idea what it sounds like on PC speakers, but it sure ass hell ripped my subwoofer a new hole!11!1)

Try this: http://www.sonicspot.com/sequencers.html

I'd recommend Evolution Audio Lite if you can find it.  I got mine off a coverdisk but I think you can get it off the internet.  The Lite version won't expire and the only real setback is that you can't save tempo changes, but if you use something like WinJammer (non-expiring free version) then you can make the tempo change and re-save.

I just want to make it clear that I do not want this song to be considered for a vote, I don't want to win, I just like contra and made a quick theme.

Well, here's my try at creating something that kinda works with the whole 'Contra boss music' kinda feel.

I decided to monkey around a bit with some 'old-school' kind of instruments, but I'm not sure whether that adds to or detracts to the whole thing ultimately - You be the judge.

Bam! (http://www.garlic.com/~rideout/spacepiratecaine/SpacePirateCaine%20-%20Boss%20Monsters.mp3)
(My apologies to all of the Dial-up people who loathe downloading 5 meg tracks of dubious coolness.)

In retrospect, after listening to some of the other entries, I kinda thought mine feels a bit more like level music - perhaps more "pre-battle" than something you'd listen to while losing copious amounts of lives to something you could never hope to beat, but I guess my version of Contra is more laid-back than everyone else's. What are you gonna do, right?

I was feeling particularly adventurous, so after I almost posted the 'finished' product, I decided to do a second movement, which may or may not have been a good move - It doesn't transition amazingly, but I like how it turned out. Sort of a 'Level, then boss fight' kinda feel, though the second movement is decidedly much shorter.

I talk too much. I'm done now.

Well, not really my cup of tea, but I thought I would throw something in at least. ;)

Based on the "man versus huge alien machine" concept:

Hmm. I'm one of the dailers who hate the 5 megs of dubious coolness.

Watch in the future for a nice midi boos tune for all the brothers in the 28.8 hood.

The winner is ... Oz ... his entry was the best-written IMO. Although it could have been a bit longer and had more variation. Nick Dangerous's entry is a close second, more hard hitting but the quality just wasn't at Oz's level.

Das ist alles.

noo!  I just realized I had made the most awesome boss song about a month ago, and I still have it on my computer.  Aww

Oh well, it wouldn't have counted anyway.
Great Job, Oz!  :)
