Title: May MAGS
Post by: Klaus on Wed 04/05/2005 12:48:35
What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website (http://www.mags-competition.tk)

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the net month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but must not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Topic: Humoristic space game

This time your game needs to take place outer space. Of course you can use a planet as a location or a space ship. Whatever - outer space. You should create something like the SQ-games, a Star Trek- or Star Wars-parody is also possible. But you don't need to refer to existing SciFi series.

- inventory items that must appear: a laser gun, a broken light-saber (like in Star Wars), a working tricorder (like in Star Trek) and an "antique" game
- the game must have one mini-game! This is a unique, stand-alone game inside your adventure game like the pocket game in Apprentice II. It does not need to be too complex but should show some creative scripting, so just a dialog quiz where you need to find the right answer won't do it
- Don't forget about the humorisic part :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by May 27th May 29th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

The rules sounds fun and I've got an idea for a Star Wars parody. Maybe I can make this one in time.

I'm not into Star Trek so I've wonder, what's a tricorder?

Hey! Awesome idea!Ã,  I just wish we could get Vohaul Strikes Back (http://www.vohaulstrikesback.com) out in time to compete.

Oh, and a tricorder is a three-function device: combination sensor, recorder, and computer, all handheld and packaged into one really cool little instrument.

Is it allowed that you can have one of those inventory items, but you don't have to have it? I mean that it appears in the game as an easter egg. Also I want the minigame to be an easter egg.

That looks great Eggie!  God I wish I could draw like that...

One quick question, I have everything else but what do you mean by "antique" game ?  Are we talking like a really old game like snakes and ladders or Pong or something?

I was going to ask the question myself but I wonder if he means antique game like Maniac Mansion, Secret of Monkey Island or DOTT or something like that. Am I correct?

Heh I think it can be something like those games in the software shop in SQ4. ( BOOM(TM), KQ73, It came for Dessert, Defender of the Crown Rib Roast, Sim Sim, etc.)
Title: Re: May MAGS
Post by: Ubel on Fri 06/05/2005 08:30:40
Well, because the game will probably be based in future I think the "antique" game can be something like "Half-Life 2" or something. It's new game now but in the future it's antique.

Is it allowed that you can have one of those inventory items, but you don't have to have it?
All listed inventory items must appear in the game and it must be possible to put them into the player's inventory list. They don't actually need to be used to solve a puzzle but of course it's nicer to see these things being in action.

Take the word "antique" from todays point of view. So cards and chess would best fit this description. Early computer game titles are also allowed if you want to go that way but better do not use current titles. Decide for yourself how "antique" you will go :)

I'm asking a favour here. Could you lenghten the deadline with few days? Because my computers have been messing with me and I had to format hard disk. I took copies of my game to my brothers computer but then he took it away with him and I haven't been able to work on my game in at least five days. Tomorrow he will be able to send the files back to me, so if you could lenghten the deadline a little, I would be very pleased. :)

Okay - let's see what we can do here... As the new competition should start on June 1st, the last possible moment would be midnight on May 29th.  :)
So very early on 30th the voting will begin. We still need some time for voting and setting up the new rules, so is that okay for you? I hope these two additional days will help...

WAR STARS
Download here 1,2 mb (http://www.riotamot.com/WarStars.zip)

Yea, it's not another WKKR, not at all. It is short, swift and I demand you beat it within 30 minutes tops! I have some music issues, which I believe is a fault on my computer rather than the coding (because honetly "Play music on room loading" should not fudge up ;)

I say this is v0.9, I tested it through with some buddies, and they saw some errors I corrected. But who knows what'll pop up along the way. It SHOULD be bug free. HAAAAAAAAA! Too bad I didn't make anything better with the guidelines. Yes, I am ashamed..

And make sure you read the manual!

This reminded me how much I hate making adventure games. It'll take another year for me to get stupid enough to try it out again ;)

Hope you'll enjoy it
//Tomateyou

P.S. You can DIE!! D.S.

Heh! That was a great game 2ma2. Made me laugh. My game (the one that won't get finished for tomorrow) would have had no competition against that. :)

I wouldn't bet on it. I could have made much better usage of the required inventory items.. looking forward to see your game. Get it finished before deadline! :)

Not possible. :) I didn't get enough time to make it so it's only about 10% ready by now. But I am going to finish it during this summer. I hope.

Here's a screenshot of what I have now:

So we're very close to the deadline now: The voting will begin in about 18 hours from now (please check the timestamp of this posting). So be quick an submit your entries in time :)

I menaged to finish my MAGS entry :P
It wasn't tested at all and I'm sure you will find some bugs (hope they won't be cardinal). I didn't have nearly enough time, so there is less then half things in in that I wanted to be. But, here it is:

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?category=100&action=search&sterm=zdero&action=download&game=569

it's called STARSHIP CARAMBA
You play the role of Dick Spacey, Caramba's captain and only passanger who wishes to land on earth.
Here are the screenshots:

The game isn't documented and has no sounds, but I am sure you will menage. If not, there is this forum ;D

(The game is 21Mb, but zip file has only 2,5MB. Don't know how I did it, but I did.)

(side note -

Quote(The game is 21Mb, but zip file has only 2,5MB. Don't know how I did it, but I did.)

Most of that size must have been in graphics rather than overall game complexity, graphics compress very well)

Yes, I understand that, it's only that I never saw this percent of compresion (10 times smaller).

Okay, so here we go with two entries from two authors that are both already known as creators of a MAGS game. Funny that both games include a chess board (it really was just an example for an old-style game) :)
Now let's start:

For voting please visit the MAGS site (http://www.mags-competition.tk) or make your choice right here (only use one of these two ways of voting - nothing else allowed):

War Stars by 2ma2 (http://mags.klaus-schlichter.info?page=voting&fav=War%20Stars)
Starship Caramba by Boris Zdero (http://mags.klaus-schlichter.info?page=voting&fav=Starship%20Caramba)

Please vote only once and be sure to have played all games before sending your voice! Good luck to all participants.

Starship Caramba runs as slow as @$&$*!@ on my compy. What can I do? [Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. I had to unlock the file. I can only run the Internet on a Mac and then copy the files on a CD to put on Windows. This, of course, locks all the game files and prevents me from making changes. This as happened to me before and I fixed it this way! Boy, I'm dumber than a load of bricks.]

So it's June already and the time for voting is over now. Even after this short time for counting your votes there is a clear winner for MAGS 2005-05.

To make it short - just like the voting priod - let's now announce the winner:
It's the same person that won years back in 2001 with the famous AGS bar story.

Congratulations go to 2ma2 and his entry War Stars.

Thanks to both entrants for the nice and amusing games.
BorisZ: I'm sure your  third entry will make it to the top in the end!
2ma2: Please check your PM!

Oi, I don't wine! ;p

Thank you everybody for voting! I've whipped up some pure evil restrictions for the June MAGS competition, and I would very much like as many as possible to join in the fun! Let's dig into gaming design! ;D
