Pick one of your favourite tunes from an old (classic) video/computer game and compose a new tune based on it. I know a theme similar to this theme has been used before, but I love it! It's cool to hear A) what people consider to be their favourite game tunes and B) what people do with them! Try to do something different, not just mimic the original!
Also, specify which song you're covering, in case I can't figure it out. ;)
Go! Go! Go!
EDIT:
Okay, I had a query by e-mail about the theme, and to clear things up: NO - you don't have to compose something entirely different to the original. Think of it as a variation on the original song, how much different/similar it is to the original version is up to you really. To put it simple: It's YOUR version of the song, what you make of it is up to you. Good luck!
Ok. Someday I've done a simple remix of two pieces, ripped from "Castlevania II" GameBoy edition and an adventure PC game "Sanitarium" (maybe it's not classic, but...). I'm saying about a game stage select theme ("Castlevania") and a music from the chapter "The Morgue and Cemetery" of "Sanitarium".
It's a very short tune (something about a half of minute) and at last it's just a remix, but as I think - it fits this compo pretty well. Check it out!

Haha this is really amateur but it was fun to make.
It's basically a jazzed up version of the original and I didn't edit the main tune very much.
But I figured out the chords on my own and came up with this on my electric piano.
Enjoy!

EDIT: Just noticed a slight sound problem. Might have to turn your volume up a l'il bit. :)
That took me SO much longer than I anticipated. (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/ZELDA.MID)
PLEASE save as... Quicktime absolutely mauls MIDI.
Very nice entries so far! Keep 'em coming.
(Gah, I'm gonna remove this entry, I just noticed, there really is not much different.)
Wow, Zor, that's very impressive. I haven't heard the original tune, so I don't know what all you actually did, but your song very much reminds me of a Metallica tune (especially the drums) and by that I mean it is awesome.
----- EDIT ----
Keelhaul me, please...
I said that ... Gah I suck.
All I did was change the drumbeat a bit, add/edit a few chords and notes and redid the bass section.
As I said, there's not much different.
Hmm... I seem to be really good in causing havoc :(
Still, Zor's effort gave me a sudden burst of inspiration...
http://koti.mbnet.fi/tk-/files/musiccomp_redoom.mid just quickly wrapped up, if you don't recognise the orginial I either did very poorly or you should be extremely shamed of yourself...
...and I should be shamed not what I caused here, but also of that very bad pun with the filename ¬¬
Sorry, I'm a bit confused with all the editing.
Zor, post it anyway dude, what have you got to lose?
This is just for fun.
Is it your Doom one or what?
Did someone insult it?
Hehe, post it man.
:D
(http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/beavis.gif) Yeah, huh, post it, post it, huh, huh...
(http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/butthead.gif) Yeah, skulls are cool, huh, huh...
Hi everybody. I'm new. I just registered.
Anyway, I think I got a little carried away with this...
I put a few different themes from Air Fortress on NES in there.
My version

Ok, new entry. Same piece, different style.
Enjoy.
Oh, and btw, here's the original if anyone wants to make a comparison: Clicky f00! (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/DOOM95.mid).
Really nice work Zor and Erenan :D
Now I can rid the fear of winning, once again, phew...
I think Erenan's is the best.
Here's my entry! I don't know how valid is because I'm not sure
how "classic" the game is considered :o I've taken a bit of the
main theme here and gave it a slightly different style I guess.
The originals are in MP3 format, you can check them out at the
Magic Ball Network (http://el-muerte.student.utwente.nl/lba/files/Music/LBA1/).
m0ds' Little Big Adventure (http://screen7.adventuredevelopers.com/m0dlba.mid).mid
I chose this because I have loved the music to both LBA games the longest,
and I have used their music as a basis for my own from the very start of my computer
music career... Plus LBA's are AWESOME. :P
m0ds
Mods, I really like that tune.
At times, it seems weird but then it gets back into the melody and it sounds great.
Coolness.
:D
I'm sorry, but I won't have time to comment each entry this time around, I'm leaving town in a while so I'm just dropping by to announce the winner. All of you did good, and Zor, I really liked your first entry. Perhaps a bit too identical to the original, as pointed out, but very carefully composed. The runner-up for this contest is Billy Gnome Jefferson with his awesome rendition of the Monkey Island Theme. I really like the feel and creative freedom you've put into this one, good job! And the winner of the contest is...
Flippy_D!
Very cute version of one of the most famed themes in gaming history. Nice attention to detail. Strong harmonies and good dynamics. However, it sounds like the bass line is muted after the two first measures (after the intro).
Sweet effort!
Congrats, Flippy :) Really nice tune.

Doh! I got you mixed up with Zor. Sorry about that! ::) ;)
No problem. :)
[ravenous chanting] ... START NEW COMP, START NEW COMP ... [/ravenous chanting]
Awesome, before this dies...
Thanks Oz!!!
Great comp with a cool theme.
(And you made me runner upÃ, :D)
Great work guys! Congrats Flippy! If anyone wants me, I'm here till Thursday!
GOODNIGHT!
~Billy
;D
Stunned.
Erenan's is blatently the best entry here... and I'd defer the win to him if it wasn't for the fact he's a brand new member - he might not come back.
So thanks alot for the shock decision! :P
Nah, I plan on being here for a while as I intend to start making games with AGS. All the same, you're the winner. Be happy that you won. I'm just honored that you think mine was the best. :)
I have to ask about the competitions, though. Is it generally the winner of one competition that makes the next one? The page of activity descriptions doesn't make that clear for the tune contests. Is that accurate?
Yes, winner of the last round announces next competition and chooses the winner...
