Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, it is time to kick off this activity.
TEH RULES! READ CAREFULLY!!
The general idea is that you will receive a document attached to an email in your inbox, which you will add an amount of text to, and then send to another writer. By participating here, you are obliged to read through the story in its entirety, and make sure you understand it as well as possible, before you add your passage. If you don't have the time or motivation to read through the story that you receive, don't add to it, just pass it along.
How do we do it?P
This time, we write 300 words each. For the sake of coherence and quality, please try your best to make the passage you contribute with fit in the already existing story, and avoid clashing too strikingly with its genre and tone of voice. Remember tense and person and try not to confuse the future readers.
This time, the story will branch in a certain pattern that is laid out below.
Vince_Twelve

Babar Jack Sheehan

Andail
You need to consult the signing up-thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=34023.0) to find the cunningly disguised email addresses.
Huh?
Ok, to clarify: Vince_Twelve gets the honour to write the opening passage. After him, Rock-Chick takes over before the story divides into two paths. This means she must send the document to both Babar and Jack Sheehan.
Two teams take over the story, add their words and send it along to the four final teams.
TheJburger, Yours truly, Lo-res-man and Jelfish each makes sure they finish their versions, so we get four complete stories. Of course, each story will only be 3000 words, and less than half of every story will be unique reading.
Time frame
Use this thread (yes it will be cluttered beyond comprehension) to confirm that you've received the document. You must receive and send the story within 48 hours, or the person before you will re-send it to the writer after you in line. This means you have two days to add your passage.
The four stories don't need to be published simultaneously; whenever one path is completed, it will be published here.
Reminders
Keep in mind where you're positioned, and adjust your text to fit that position. If you're in the beginning, don't kill off important characters or try to conclude the story. If you're towards the end, don't introduce too many new characters or concepts.
What do we write about?
Here's the funny part. The genre of this edition's story shall be:
A CONTEMPORARY URBAN SATIRE
Have fun!

Guess Christopher Robin doesn't like us both.

Somehow I assumed it would be a detective story again. Silly me.
Sounds fantastic lads, I'm really glad I get to start one of the branches, it'll be interesting to note where the differences (and similarities I guess) are between my and Babar's take on things.
Here we go then...
Good luck everyone.
Contemporary urban... oh dear...
Contemporary?
Urban?
Satire?
:o
This is gonna be interesting!
Ok, first update! I've written and am waiting for Rock_chick to PM me her email address which she didn't want to share in the thread. I'm not really sure how to start a contemporary urban satire, but I've given it my best shot.
The good news is, it isn't horribly inconsistent yet!
The bad news is, this is just the beginning... :-*
Edit: Nevermind, Rock_chick got back to me and apparently she lost interest. I've sent it on to Babar and Jack Shehan.

Just to let you guys know I am going through some stuff at the moment and signed up a week or so ago and just found out I was involved in this officially. So I'm letting you all know I am no longer interested, sorry to let you all down.

I agree. Different styles is bad enough... now we gotta deal with the different sense of humour, and the inevitable toilet jokes (there's always one person who loves toilet jokes...)
Pessimistically yours,
Emerald :P
*sigh* and I again, am at the bottom of the list. Well, at least the list is shorter this time. Oh well. . . ::)

Uh-oh, shouldn't have said that, now everybody's going to try and be "that guy" :P
Done, and sent off to Stupot. 24 hours was a little short, though. I liked the 48 hour limit.
I generally agree. I like to sleep on something before showing it to the world. Also, technically, I guess I'm supposed to skip Sheehan and send it on to Tuomas now that it's been 24 hours, but I think I'll give him a little extra time, since we've already lost one writer.
Fair enough, let's officially increase it to 48 hours. We're not really in a rush anyway.
Feck, it got caught in my spam filter. Give me a day or so and I'll have it for you. Sorry for the delay lads.
Maybe it would be good to write here (like in the last comp) when you have sent the e-mail forward. That way the next one knows to look for it.
Also, I added myself after Twinmoon, as she explicitly wrote she didn't want the ending part. I promise I will do my best to give it a nice ending.
I've sent it to Tuomas, It looks fine so far I think, I tried a little religious humour, so get ready to groan.
Thanks Jack, I've received it, done my share and sent it onwards to Antonio. Branch B here is looking rather nice at the moment :)
So how's Branch A going? Status update anyone... Stupot?
I've done my bit and sent it to BrokenButterfly.
If I found out one thing it is that I cannot write Contemporary Urban Satires, but I think I succeeded in making it fairly humourous, if maybe a little OTT. I hope it works, though.
Logging in just to tell you I've received it. :)
auriond, expect an email from me in 24 hours, less if I'm inspired, or more if I'm not. Since the deadline has been extended maybe I'll take advantage of it.
Alrighty - no hurry as I'm also having a busy spell right now. Thank goodness for the 48 hours :)
Just to let you guys know, I'll be on an unforseen business trip up to and including April 9. I'm still planning to add my part to the story though. So if the story gets to me way before the 9th, please give me a couple of extra hours to add my bit on the 10th.
Thanks
I've finished my part, and have sent it on to auriond. Saying it here, and also PMed her about checking her mail in case it goes into the junk folder :)
I'm a bit over 300 words, I hope it's ok. I realize how 300 words is really not a lot, and once you start it's hard to stop ;D

My part was a tad under 300, so consider it level. :)
And done! Sent it on to Cameron and LGM. I exceeded my 300 words by a bit as well... golly, it's sure hard to stop once you're on a roll!
Here we go, I sent it on to FSi. This story is magnificent so far, I love it :)
Has Antonio sent it off yet? Our side appears to be stalling.
I'll be done with it tonight everyone, will send it on ASAP...
I've sent it on to enveloop, it's looking good... :)
LGM, get yer arse in gear!! :P
Enveloop hasn't been active since 25 march. I fear we may have to skip him.
And that'd only be the second from branch B then altogether :D well, I guess we'll be a bit shorter then...

Shorter than the original plan I mean
Sorry, guys. been a crazy weekend. I actually wrote my addition yesterday, but got pulled from the computer before i could send it off. So now I'm trying to recreate it here. Please be patient, I'm working on it.
I sent off the story to Voh yesterday, dunno where it is today.
Should you skip enveloop yet?
Is this the general consensus?
If he has been last active 25th of march then what are the odds he'll show up in the next 10 hours? I'd say skip him.
Eager, PP? ;)
You got me! Guilty as charged. ;) :D
EDIT: I got the text from Antonio just now and I'm starting to work on it.
Alright, I *did* get it. Stupid spamfilter hid it from me >_<
Right, gonna read it through now, will post an update soon.
Okay... I've done my part and send it to Akatosh.

I think it's about the time to start working on an ending and tying up some loose strings ;)

Emerald, if you're going to keep timing people you should change your name to 'The Clockmaster'.
Though on second thoughts.....
People sometimes have real lives that pop up unexpectedly. I don't think we can blame them for it. We just have to skip them.
Unless... they have logged on since then, and posted in other forums but not here. Then I think we have every right to take them out and shoot them. :)
Okay, I finished my part, so I guess branch A-1 is completed.

Oooh, that's awesome!! ;D I thought you said not to expect anything anytime soon, it's great to get things when you least expect it!
Yes you can upload it I guess? Andail said there was no need for the stories to be published at the same time. But maybe you want to wait for his confirmation.
As for the upload space, how about hosting it here (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/upload/upload.html)? The previous story was uploaded there too I think :)
Wherever it is hosted, I reckon we should have it so that each branch appears on a new page, so that the first page is Vinces introduction, then there are links to branches A and B which in turn have links to A1&A2 and B1&B2 respectively...
That should be doable on 2dadventure.com, but I'd be happy to rig it up on my site if it's not.
Actually, send it to me and I'll make a little webpage of it, roughly like Stupot suggested.

Could you remove the hyphen in my name, Emerald?
*shrug* Sure, if it means that much to you...
So, as far as I can tell, here's what's happening next:
1) Someone needs to contact Antonio and tell him to re-send the file to Jon
OR
PixelPerfect/Akatosh/Venus sends the file (sans their additions) to Jon
2) TwinMoon sends the file on to Andail, to finish part A-2
3) Venus finishes part B-2 and sends it to Andail to add to his site
Quote from: Emerald on Fri 11/04/2008 18:21:12
3) Venus adds his addition and sends it on to Jelfish (why has Venus seemed to miss that? or am I missing something?) to finish part B-2
You might have missed this:

Ah-right-cha.
Oh yeah, and I think it would be best if all 4 story branches were posted simultaneously. Otherwise, it'll be unfair on the others, since the part B-1 folks (Jon, lo_res and I) will have an advance on the story (since we'll be able to read the first half of the story before it's even our go)
I don't know if that really matters, but we're probably better off keeping things even...
Quote from: Emerald on Fri 11/04/2008 19:21:22

As eager as I am to read the finished products, I agree. It would also prevent the more complete branches and limbs from influencing the growth of the others.
Well maybe Andail thought that uploading the stories one at a time would be nice in the sense that those done writing could read the finished product (whole Branch A-1, Branch A-2 except Andail, Branch B up to Antonio and Branch B-2 except Venus) :). Then have a laugh, and see how ideas diverged. As for those who haven't added their part yet, they aren't supposed to read it... but it's true that if one branch is uploaded, it'd be hard to resist the temptation of peeking. So I agree, we can wait!
By the way, Venus is a girl... I wouldn't assume otherwise from the name ??? and her profile confirms it.

Indeed, I am.
Anyway, I have just finished the story of branch B2 and sent it to Andail. It really is a shame that Jellfish dropped out. Somehow the story seemed to just take off properly and now I had to draw it to a rather abrupt ending which I'm afraid is not exactly top-notch either. I think I completely failed the satire part. But well, it was fun writing...
Ok, I've sent it to Andail.
@ emerald: Moony?
Did you read too much comics with Spider-man and Moonknight?
Ok, got Venus' part and Twinmoon's, which I'm gonna finish soon enough.
When I get the fourth part, I'll upload them all together.
Does anyone know where the fourth bit is?
I don't know if anyone has bothered to PM Antonio (he thought he was done and had passed it on) or Eggie (he seems to not have noticed that he has it, maybe it got caught in the spam filter as .rtf files are wont to do) so I've gone ahead and PMed them both.
We'll see if Eggie can write his bit and send it on before Antonio skips him. Otherwise, on to Jon.

Heh, you're the only person I've ever seen who spells Spider-Man correctly.
But I was thinking more of the Harry Potter character played by Brendan Gleeson.
Edit: No, wait, I wasn't. Different character.
In the interest of getting this completed, I'm PMing Pixelperfect to ask him to send the story without his modifications on to Jon (as per Emerald's fine suggestion), who has been active in the forums and hopefully will get B-1 movin'.
Hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes.
Jon, you're still with us, right?
I sent the story how I got it from Antonio to Jon just now.
Don't worry i'm still here :)
Ok, I'm done with my part now...I chose to write a rather absurd ending, as there were too many loose ends to tie with so few words...I still had to exceed my word limit a bit, or it would be completely nonsensical.
I still enjoyed the story, though.
Awaiting the last story now, and then I'll publish them.
Gee, I find it hard to keep myself in my pants.
Also, I'm a bit excited about the results of the stories.
I'm keen to see how A-2 was wrapped up :)

Wahey! I can almost taste it.
You got any ideas for the follow-up Andail?
I was thinking of having one where one person begins a story with a character, who meets a new one (maybe walks past him in the street or serves him at the grocery shop), then the next writer has to follow that character for 200 words or so before introducing a new one. The next writer would take that new character somewhere else, who would then meet a new one... theeen, it would be the job of the final person in the list to have his character go full circle and reintroduce the character who started it all...
What do you reckon?
I was thinking that we should have substitutes/people who are designated to take over for those of us that will (inevitably, it seems) not be able to meet the deadline. So we could have the normal list, and then a concurrent list of substitutes (which could have the same people on it).
For example...
Main List Sub List
Andail Andail
Emerald Emerald
Vince Vince
Moony Moony
Stupot Stupot
So, the first person off the main list to be skipped will be substituted by the first person on the sub list (e.g. if Vince is skipped, Andail takes over). And the second to be skipped is subbed by the second on the sub list (e.g if Moony is then skipped, Emerald takes over). Et cetera. Or something.
Not a bad idea, Emmy.
IMHO you only need 1-2 persons to secure the ending, if someone is skipped the next person in line can just continue the story.
- Moony
Emmy?
Is that because my genius is worthy of an emmy?
(Meh. I'm sorry for that. I'm tired...)

Hmm... Lo_rez is taking his sweet time. it's been about 98 hours since I sent it on, 50 since he acknowledged receiving it...
I suppose I didn't make it easy for him. The plot started out strong, then kind of meandered off for a bit -- which would have been fine if it weren't for all the skippings (ours is the shortest version) -- so I tried to ride it back to the initial point. Though the way I did it... If he manages to wrap it up in 300 words, I'll be quite impressed...
It's not that big a deal, it's just that the ending might seem somewhat abrupt, since about 900 potential words worth of plot is missing...
Oh give the guy a break, it's not like we haven't waited before ;)

I had rather forgotten about this, my apologies. I will get right on it.
Treachery most foul!
I have to admit I'm getting rather sick of waiting for lo_res_man to do his part. I check back a couple times a day to see if there's finally a conclusion, but noooo :'(
How about we use this to our advantage and turn it into the next challenge?
Release the three finished stories separately for us all to enjoy, but then also release the unfinished story and hold a competition where we all have to finish that story in 300 words. Then we will have a vote for the best ending, and that ending will become the official ending for branch B-1.
Anyone?
'I whole heartedly endorse the above Idea, product or service'.
Yeah, I'm all up for that. Anything to get this moving again. It's seriously getting real old real fast. Soon it will be the AGS Geriatric Writing Project. ;D
I'll try that
As much as I like lrm's avatar, it's been six days since he received it. I say publish it! (and make a contest out of the last bit)
the B-1 branch is a bit... skeletal. There's 1,500 words so far, and about 3 people went AWOL between Antonio (at the 1,200 word mark) and I. So, I had to find a way to compensate for the 900 missing words and start wrapping things up. Things go from moving kind of slow and leisurely, to suddenly lurching forward and accelerating off...
Anyway, I sent it on to Andail with ya'll's suggestion.
Oh come on! This is like waiting for Duke Nukem Forever.

Or Godot.
At least, I think I sent it to Andail...
perhaps Andail is with Godot.
Oh got it. It was trapped in my spam folder. Allright, here are the four stories:
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Promotion.doc
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Promotion2.doc
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/promotion3.doc
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/promottion12.doc
Unfortunately, they're not in the right order here, I will take care of that when I get home from work.
A bit stressed right now!
Ok!
Andail?
These 4 docs are empty! All of them!
What gives ???
Promotion3 seems to have something in it for me, but the others are empty...
3 looks complete, but the rest were nil'd
Ok, strange. How about people just published the versions they've sent to me here, and I'll put them together in the first post.
Meanwhile, enjoy the version that works.
If you can :-\
Le exaggerated sigh.
Wait, isn't B-1 still unfinished?
Which branch is promotion3?
Assuming 'Commotion' is by Babar and 'Celebration' is by Stupot, it diverges from branch A-2 after that, which doesn't seem to be right since the split was after Auriond, according to the map.
I did a bit of "Celebration", and the rest is by auriond. So promotion3 is either branch A-1 or A-2.
I wrote the middle part of 'Commotion'.
Ah, I see. I figured everyone wrote one chapter. Did I mention I suck at math? ;)
Then promotion3.doc is branch A-1.
One small chapter per person would be nice!
As I told auriond, if we each write a chapter, a whole page or something, one day we'll be able to publish a book ;D don't you think?
Totally. But who would read such aimless writing? ;)
Oh... you never know ;) if we keep honing our skills here, we could become more and more alike in thinking and writing style... until it is quite indistinguishable from one another... and then we will become a novel factory! An unstoppable force in the literary scene!
(Novel factory, that immediately reminds me of Philip Parker (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Philip+M.+Parker&x=0&y=0). If you're wondering what's so special about him, check out how many books he's written.
and, some more information on this literary giant: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9588_22-6237305.html)
So, what's up with this?
Why aren't the other last people in the branch uploading their stories? Will we have a competition writing the last bit of branch B-1?
pssh I don't even care anymore, So many people fucked this one up I can't see the next one being any better.
Sorry for the delay. I only just read that it was up to me now to upload the story. So here is the finished product of branch B2, hopefully working this time. Enjoy!

O_o Well that's an unconventional turn in the plot. After what I wrote myself I was waiting for something completely different!
BTW, who's Liz?

Tuomas, you're a mind reader.
I was going to wait until all the four stories were ready for reading, but I broke down and read the two that have been shown here so far.
My intentions in writing the first bit were to just provide a setting that could easily be turned into satire, and I thought that a celebrity gossip magazine would be perfect. I thought it was interesting that neither of the branches released so far really touched on how ridiculous celeb gossip is. One devolved into random violence and one ignored my setting and went in a different direction right away. Regardless of my intentions, however, both branches turned out to be pleasant, if a bit cacophonous, reads. Here were my thoughts on the first two branches:
Branch A-1: The part with Jigger and Ollie was brilliant. Hats off to the writers of that part! Too bad we only heard mention of those characters later.
I loved the idea of having different chapters with the rhyming titles! That's the way to change first-person narrators. Each one was fairly clear about the character it switched to.
The ending was quite nice, even though the story got a bit muddled in all the mayhem, but it was a fun muddled anyways. I liked the big reveal at the end.
And I thought it was (unintentionally) hilarious that somehow the name of the magazine became "Employees of Undressed" because someone misread a line in my first bit! I was saying that the employees of the magazine "Undressed" ran to the windows. But whatever, it was funny! :P
Branch B-2: It's amazing how different the two stories turned out. There were some great one-liners in this bit. "himself or Himself" ha!
The focus on the funeral was a good idea, and I liked the two professional mourners.
Liz? Freudian slip? And Chris! His name was Chris! I couldn't think of a good name so I just gave him an initial. Glad someone filled in that blank. Also, I'm glad someone followed up on the romance set up that I slipped into the start!
Well done to everyone, except for the people who delayed the hell out of this thing! Can we see the other two now? Please?

As one of them, I say: thanks! But I'm still embarrassed :-[
I really liked your setting, Vince Twelve! Even though you wanted to write the ending, your beginning was awesome! I'm glad I wasn't the one to do it, I wonder what I would've come up with...

I supposed I'm the one to blame for having fueled it with my take on Jigger? But with your two people going splat and kershplack, it was pretty violent too nah? ;D
I like both stories so far, and can't wait for the remaining two!

Me too. Thanks Vince. Your part was equally good considering you had the task of working out what the hell a "contemporary urban satire" is supposed to be like.
I thought the stories both came out very well, it's a shame the whole process was a farce... we need to be more disciplined and only those who fully intend to participate should put their names down... I know we can't account for unforeseen circumstances, but people should just think about it for a few minutes before saying "Count me in..."

As the originator of those two, I have to agree with you. It's hilarious how they were developed.
I was happy that when I put a chapter name at the beginning, people got the idea and continued with it, although my reasoning was simply that I wanted to play with some other characters, and the first person narrative would have made that difficult otherwise.
While I can't think of either branch being 'better' than the other, B2 is definitely the more sane and clearer story :D.

Liz? Freudian slip?
Actually, it's not quite freudian. I had spent some hours of that day studying stuff about a book since there was an important test upcoming and I knew virtually nothing about it. The female main character / love interest of that book was named "Elisabeth", and given my ineptitude when it comes to names, I somehow got it mixed up with Margret from the chain story. Still... :-[
I'd really, really like to see what A-2 turned into. Andail?
Well, I suppose there's no hope of lo_res_man coming back with an ending. And even Andail seems to have gone AWOL.
So, I'll just post the B-1 branch as-is and you can make up the ending in your own heads...
Promotion (B-1) (http://www.mediafire.com/?mty6ww0mmyt)
Edit: B-2 seems to be corrupted. It's 90KBs (which seems oddly big) and no matter what word processor I load it on to it either rejects the file or locks up...
Is there anywhere else you can host that Emerald? It's asking me to register and I don't really feel like it.
I'm not registered there, and the download works for me.
I can download B-1 as well, and I'm not registered on Mediafire (never will be either).
To satisfy your curiosities almost, here's A-2 (http://fileden.com/files/2008/3/25/1835627/AGStale-1b.rtf) minus Andails ending, but with an exciting cliffhanger.
Thanks, twinmoon, that was fun to read :)
Hope to see the finished branch one of these days.
This writing comp didn't quite... Work out, did it.
I'm probably the primary culprit in the muddled state of A-1. Sorry about that. I was trying to get everyone to converge in one or two places for the end chapter and fix some potential timeline problems, but I guess I just made it worse. :=

Yet the end result still seems of better quality than the last.
I was thinking of some ideas to rectify the 'missing link' problems for next time. I shall number them for easy critiquing/ripping apart...
1.
Pre-assign substitutes to jump in and take over for anyone who misses the deadline, which should be enforced better, for smoother progression. Make sure everyone who signs up understands that if they miss the deadline, they
will be subsituted -- no waitsies. That should make them more attentive.
2.
Assign a referee - someone who's dedicated and frequently checks up on the competition - to keep things moving. Whenever you send the document on down to the next person, you
also send it to the ref. That way, the ref will always have an up-to-date copy. If/when somebody misses the deadline, the ref sends the up-to-date copy to the next person in line, and also sends a notice to the skippee informing them they've been skipped and to feel ashamed.
3.
Use a first-come, first-serve policy rather than a list which is drawn up weeks before the actual competition. Quite simply, when someone finishes their part, they post up "I'm finished! Who's next?", and then they hand off the document to the first person to shout "Me! Memememimilol" and the chain continues like that.
4.
We forgo the document files and emails and just use the forum thread, like normal people. At the beginning, the thread-starter sets out the genre, the word limit per post, and how many posts until the story ends, and how many posts are allowed per writer (for example: modern fantasy, 500 words maximum per post, ends on the 25th post, one post per person).
Whatcha think?

That's fine except one thing: someone might be faster in writing than you are (e.g. post his view on that part of the story, which might be different from one of yours).

True enough. It would be a bitch to write a full 500 words, only to have the red warning message pop up.
Maybe if you 'reserve' the spot first, then immediately edit it with your addition it would help that though.
Not all the branches have been uploaded, have they? Where are the missing ones?
Yes they have, you have to do a little bit of searching though. Here you go:
A-1 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/promotion3.doc)
A-2 (http://fileden.com/files/2008/3/25/1835627/AGStale-1b.rtf) (without Andail's ending)
B-1 (http://www.mediafire.com/?mty6ww0mmyt)
B-2 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Promotion_B2.doc)
Ah thank you, I didn't download branch A-2 because I was waiting for Andail to patch up the ending. That sort of translated into more than one missing branch somehow. Thanks :)

B-1 doesn't have Lo_res_man's ending, either.
Just want to add that my ending was added in time, but apparently the file didn't upload properly.
Here's the entire A-2.
