Title: October MAGS
Post by: Klaus on Fri 01/10/2004 12:52:04
What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website (http://www.mags-competition.tk)

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the net month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but must not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After "Fantasy" we now come to this month's guidelines set by Rani a.k.a AGS-GD. No special items need to be included this time so you can be very free in what you create:

Theme - Conspiracy

There is something going on! You can barely notice it! But you are sure that something is going on behind your back that -in a way or another- is related to you and is not good!

- Any kind and length of conspiracy is acceptable:
It could be as simple as co-workers trying to give you some hard time with the boss by trying to steal your files â€"and how you'll stop them or revenge!- or it could be a deep "realistic" story of finding your wife stabbed to death, your finger prints all over the knife and your two close and dear neighbors claming they saw him/her do it â€"and how will you deal with this conspiracy and find out who really did it- or whatever may come to your mind.

Again, the main aspect is to make the player feel and know that something wrong is going on behind the scenes and force him to deal with it.

- The game has to feature at least three scenes.

---------------------------------------------------------------

All entries need to be in on October 25th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

I am in too! Again. I am turning into a chronic looser: I lost 3 competitions last week! I guess it isn't easy to loose every time,  isn't it!

I have a question about the 'scenes' by this do you mean three backgrounds, or do mean is in acts like Act1 etc. The latter would take a lot of work.

Three backgrounds not acts.

I've just started my game.  It's called bikini ninja clan.  It's gonna feature 4 rooms.

I got all pumped up after playing the winner of the september contest.

This will be my first game, so I'm keeping it pretty small if i can.

I'm not particularly sure about this, but you guys tell me:

On the 8th of October, without knowing the rules for this month's MAGS, I released "Abducted: 10 Minutes", a conspiracy story about family values and terrorism. I fulfils all rules for this month's MAGS.

Basically, you play an old cop whose daughter has been kidnapped as a sort of vendetta for something that happened a long time ago. You have exactly ten minutes to rescue her before she gets shot.

The question is: would this game qualify for this month's MAGS comp?

Just in case, a screenshot:

You can dl the game from the main AGS page (see latest added games), or alternatively, from its Completed Games thread.

Spoiler

this is the 3 time people make theyr own game and turn it into an MAGs game
there was a similar question befor and befour and befoure that
MAGS is to help people with scripting and more and the main thing is that it must be done in a month then when somebody has been working on a game for like 2 years and then just like that make it an MAGS game
you are suposed to start create a game when you see this, so the game has been given the same time as all the others so everyone has a fair chances
if i were suposed to create a game in 1 month then i would never come with this good game
[close]
PS
i may be wrong so just say so and i will edit the post

<EDIT>
ahh you said you did it in 10 days, then i think it is ok but you will have to ask Klaus

sorry for being so angry to you ;D

I didn't know this had been asked before. I'm sorry.

I began working on the game around the 20th of September, and I released it on the 8th October (although I cannot possibly prove it).

I did think about that particular issue when I posted my question, and I thought I had a valid point. I spent less than a month on it (only ten days before the comp actually started).

As I said, my apologies. It was only a question.

I just didn't think it would bother anyone, especially since there aren't that many entries yet.

Yeah... I'm running out of time on mine.  I'm only done 2 rooms and 1 puzzle (and it's lame).  I think I've only got 5 days left.  But I haven't spent very much time on it at all....  Bikini ninja was supposed to be ultra cool, and ultra funny, but so far it is ultra lame.

As for the entry, I think we should let his entry in, but hey whatever.  Also with mags I think it would be fun to have progress blogs.

i'm out of the game, i got side tracked doing other things...
personally if assie wants to enter he should be free to do so, after all anyone of us could have an unfinished game kicking about that may fit into any mags

IF i was doin this MAGS i wouldn't have a problem, but i would win anyway! (YEAH! RIGHT!)

its the taking part that matters not the winning, that just a bonus

Yup, 5 days left  lads. I've got 3 characters, 5 backgrounds a load of story and the intro done.

So yes, i should be done by the deadline.

Let's say 60 hours from now (see timestamp of this posting).
Good luck :)

Yeah sorry I'm not going to finish.  I could upload anyhow as I did spend some time on making cool backgrounds, but all for not, I'm not going to upload it in its current unfinished not fun to play state.  Here's some screen shots.  Maybe I'll try entering another mags, it's just that I don't have a lot of time, but now that I've got a handle on scripting ect. I should be able to make stuff a lot quicker, good luck to everyone else.  Also making things in 640x480 was too time consuming, I think also i wouldn't make as many walking frames for my different characters, 10 was just too many.

The Screenshots of Bikini Ninja look pretty cool. Are you going to release it apart from MAGS? Maybe at least to show the other resources you did (10 animation frames sound prospering [Ich meine viel versprechend. Hoffe ich habe das korrekte Wort gewählt])?

Paranoid!

Well here it is, my attempt at this months MAGS.

You Play EGO, a man trapped in a world of pixels and binary. Convinced that you're stuck in an computer game you go forth to seek somone who may know somthing about the matter.

Game is in 320x240 high colour, with loads of places to go. :)

BLOGS: You know it's always possible to edit a posting in this board. So everyone could show the progress of a game within this thread by easily editing a message.

... without knowing the rules for this month's MAGS ...
QUALIFICATION: Hey aussie, you caused me deep, deep trouble with your question. Actually I do not see "Abducted: 10 Minutes" as a MAGS game and you had no real deadline or guidelines as it's a separate project apart from the competition. On the other hand it fits the rules, you released it in time and made it withing one month...

WINNING WITHOUT VOTING: Special situations need special solutions. So this month we have two winners: chicken and aussie. I know that's not much of a competition but I'd say it's a way to bring it to a fair end. And you know it's not about the winning here.

FURTHER COMPETITIONS: In upcoming contests the creation of an entry must now start with (or after) the rules were set. I think that's the best way to handle this issue in future. If someone already started on a game (s)he's always welcome to post the game in the MAGS thread but just as a reference not as a regular entry.

I hope this decission is okay for eveyone. Thanks.
Congratulations to the winners.

Thanks Klaus,

Sorry about those problems I caused. Nothing further from my intention.

The fact is I didn't feel too guilty about the whole issue, because I thought I had counted myself out of the comp. It was only by chance that I saw your PM today.

Congrats to chicken, his is a quality game, and it didn't take all that long for him to put it together.

I'll PM him about the rules for next MAGS, and we'll get back to you shortly.

Ã,

I think its a crap idea. If i understand right you're saying everyone uses the same background and the same characters in the month, but only create different plots?

Look, if you cant draw the art then go to instagame. That have a lot of pemade stuff you can use.
