Title: One Room, One Week Competition 2 - WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Post by: scotch on Wed 29/06/2005 15:29:11
Three months ago we held a quite successful "one room game" competition. (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=20162.0)  Enough people seem to be interested now to start the second.  Some people who may want to take part are away for Brittens for the next week, so the competition will start once Brittens is over, on the 8th of July.

Deadline for game entries: Sat 16 Jul 2005, 00:00 GMT.
Extra rules:
There are no additional rules, I was just playing with you!

Rules are as follows:

Entries must -
   have just one playable room/location.
   be adventure games.

They may -
use content from any source, including pre-made.
have cut scenes, menus or limited controlled sequences outside the main room.

You should work alone, but if you need help with an area of the game (art, music...) you can find one other person to work with.

Some examples of "one room games" that would be allowed are 6 Day Assassin and  Little Jonny Evil.

Entries will be submitted anonymously. When a game is completed, its creator must contact me by PM with a download link (or to organise some other way of my receiving the game files). I will then temporarily host the game on my own site, and announce the game's release on the forums. This is to guarantee each game is voted on due to its own merit, not simply because of the names attached. Because of this, game entries can not include the game creator's name or company name anywhere. All names will be disclosed once voting has ended.

The winner will be decided by public vote once the competition ends. Voters will give each game a score out of 5. Voters will be expected to have played, and to vote on, at least half of all games entered. However, of course, playing them all is preferable.

The competition will start on Friday the 8th of July, to give people a chance to read this announcement. You should not start making your game until then. Even if you think you have no chance of winning, you're encouraged to enter - it's as much a forum activity as a contest.

Absolutely no information about your game should be shared with anyone until the competition and voting has ended. Please reply to this post if you intend to take part, but don't give any idea of what your game will be about.

ADDITIONAL CLARIFICATION:

By a room, we do not necessarily mean one crm file. If you want to use other rooms for effects such as time passing, changes in the style of the room, minigames such as the sniper mode in 6DA etc, that's fine but the bulk of the game should be centered around one location.

Check the previous OROW contest entries to get an idea of what you can do in a week. Just be creative, think small, and confine it to one physical, walkable-aroundable room/location.

ENTRIES AVAILABLE HERE (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/aga/).

WINNERS ANNOUNCED HERE (http://www.agagames.com/OROWC2/results.php).

And it seems that I shall enter.  I apparently have my vacation the exact time Brittens starts and ends, so I should be back here right before this officially begins.

I'm involved in other projects, but, heck, it's only one week!  I need to get something out there.

Yar!

I really want to enter but my full game Valis is eating up my life at the moment  :P I might still try and squeeze something out just for a breah of fresh air....And to force myself to actually animate characters  ;D

I will enter if I get enough time. I don't really know if I'll even be at home then. Hopefully will...

This is my ambiguous entry statement. I'd like to give it a whack, but I'm ridiculously slow when actually attempting to release something. But another project is a breath of fresh air I may desperately need.

I may enter, and regardless of meeting the date or not, this is one game I WILL submit to the masses since it has been extremely easy to make (already about 45% done).  One thing that doesn't make much sense to me about this competition is keeping the creator of a particular game a secret...I'd like to know the rationale behind that concept, when I thought the point was just to set guidelines basic enough to complete a game.  Anyway, it'll be done and out there either way, so stay tuned!

The idea is that people will play all of them, not just those of people they think are awesome game designers. Maybe be suprized a bit, give a chance to other people they might not know. Partly that. Besides that, the idea is that people will vote on the individual merits of these games, not based on who their friends are. In action, it was proven that people voted great on all categories on the games they liked. This made the top few games come out with boosted scores across the board, whereas I think it would make more sense for some games to win scripting and graphics, others music etc. This was also the paradigm in the AGS Awards, with Apprentice sweeping most awards ( in my opinion) needlessly. People don't seem to understand the concept of categorical voting on any other level than rewarding the creators for nice 'gaming experiences' on the whole.

I am also in for the second time. As long as there's an orow competition around, I'll be making games.

And a plea to scotch/CJ/moderators: Give a little more visibility to the compo this time. Something more than a sticky. Put a message above the boards or something. And when the games are made and scotch/aga/whoever puts them in a rar and posts them, make that .rar very visible. First page of the thread, not 5th.

People, people. You're not supposed to start before the 8th of July. At least don't take longer than 7 days to finish your game and let it brood when you're done. And keep in mind the additionar special rules may not fit your game. Best to wait till the 8th really.

I wouldn't mind seeing some interesting and unique gui's used rather than the standard default AGS. Just a quick question, I'm not going to do it as I wan;t it to be a 100% magintz game, but would using RON resources ok for this game either this time round or in the future?

Count me in for round 2! I didn't finish my game the first time because I was busy, but I shouldn't be busy for the next two weeks!

And also, I got an idea for a game alright...

I've been reading y'all's posts and I think I'm going to give a little tip that perhaps it's lingering in your head but you don't want to admit:

Keep it simple

That's the trick to getting it done. Don't try to make a full length game that takes place in one room. Come up with something that is appropiate for a single room, like a short play or something. Unless you really want to crack a title sequence and other things like that for a single room, which seems silly to me.

I've been waiting for a competition to go my way, and this time around I must be in luck. I'm already working on something for the comic contest (well, it's basically done) I have a great idea for a one room game. Just have to see the additional rules, or else I'll just release it seperate to this competition.

Heh, only joking of course. I'll start today. Though now my game will be sucky because I was waiting for the additional rules and not thinking what my game would be about without the additional rules. (I should have known this was coming... I shouldÃ,  have known...)

When we're voting for games, do the makers give themselves a 5, or is it up to them?  I don't want to be unfair to other people nor do myself an injustice.

And also, when exactly are the entries due?  A warning about 24-48 hours before would be great, I'm never any good with time zones.

I second the call for a time-zone specified due date and time.

Now back to coding.

I think the fairest thing is to mark your own game "unplayed".
Ideally the person collating the results would ignore your votes anyway.
Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2
Post by: Helm on Tue 12/07/2005 18:52:13
no, don't put unplayed. Rate yourself realistically.
Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2

That's not easy.
As SimB said:
"I don't want to be unfair to other people nor do myself an injustice."

What exactly is wrong with putting "unplayed"?
What is the justification for "Rate yourself realistically."?
Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2
Post by: edmundito on Tue 12/07/2005 23:59:56
Hmm.. who would rate themselves realistically? :P

Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2
Post by: AJA on Wed 13/07/2005 01:04:45
Uh, I'd prefer Saturday at 00:00 GMT... so that we'd have one more day to work on our games. My whole game depends on it. :P Well, not really. But it would give some extra time to beta test the game.

Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2

It will be midnight GMT, like when I started the competition... but in case anyone was confused you can all have one more day.Ã,  It will end on Sat 16 Jul 2005, 00:00.

You won't be disqualified for not playing and voting... but anyone that can should.

I don't understand what is so difficult in rating your efforts in art, scripting, music and puzzles realistically. But if it's such a big deal, ok, we can all agree to not vote for ourselves.

Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2
Post by: on Thu 14/07/2005 16:13:07
hey all! is the deadline Friday 23:59+1 minute :) or Saturday 23:59+1 minute? (and which timezone?)

it would be important to me, because if the latter one is the answer, i might have a shot with my game... i started it yesterday, and even though I have a pre-made character, the rest should be made today and tomorrow AND Saturday.

(the problem is, that i'm working 'till 6pm CET and tomorrow I'll have a NASCAR sim-race from cc .
8pm-12:30am)

well, it is not a catastrophe if the deadline is Friday night, though it would give me a lot of boost to know that I still have a chance to finish it and participate in this contest.
Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2
Post by: scotch on Thu 14/07/2005 17:29:26
The deadline is Friday 15th 23:59+1 minute, British time, which is currently UTC+1.
If you are a bit late it doesn't really matter, I'll likely be asleep at that time.  If your game doesn't make it to me before I put the archive of games up then it will be disqualified.

It seems that I overestimated myself, I worked up to now and all the artwork is done but there's still a fair bit of programming to be done and I also have no idea about music/sound, yet. Looks like we've got a couple more entries (12 or 13) than the last OROWC, which is nice.  I'll post them in a few hours.  Unfortunately one person's entry is broken, hopefully I'll be able to get a fixed version of that tomorrow.

<Sigh> I really did want to enter this, and I was working on a game, but my computer went up the left again. And after spending all morning formatting it and reinstalling everything, I just didn't have the heart to start over.

Ah well, it's obviously quite a popular activity, so I guess we'll see another one again soon. Good luck with your entries people, and I look forward to playing them.

Wow, awesome (and varied) stuff!
I don't think anything is a clear winner this time... which is great for the competition.
The first "game" I played was balloonface - that had me chuckling constantly.
Is there a voting page ready?
Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2 - ENTRIES NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD
Post by: scotch on Sat 16/07/2005 10:10:56
There is one ready, I think, AGA's handling that.  I'll post it in a day or two once some people have finished playing.  CJ will add the notice to the forums later I hope, so that a wider audience gets to see the games.

I have only played four of the entries so far, all very different and quite evenly matched, looks like it will be a tight competition.

Post by: Vince Twelve on Sat 16/07/2005 10:28:33
I agree.  These are all great, and so different.  I haven't tried all of them yet, but what I have seen is excellent.  Balloon Face was hilarious.  And Kong over Baghdad?  Don't get me started... Also, The Art of Art was charming as hell.  (The music brought back good memories from Ghostbusters! ;D)

One issue:  My copy of the "HiYah" game is not working.  There's no executable.  Just a 0KB file called "THIS GAME CURRENTLY BROKEN" accompanied by a readme, a walkthrough, and the setup files?  What's up?

I'm looking forward to trying out more!
Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2 - ENTRIES NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD
Post by: scotch on Sat 16/07/2005 10:33:22
The submitter of HiYah messed up the first time, and didn't have time to upload a new version of his game.Ã,  So I put that message in intending to replace it with the exe later, then as I was finishing uploading the archive of games his friend mailed me a working version of the game. Not wanting to upload it all again I uploaded the new game and told AGA to add it to the zip file on the server using linux magic.Ã,  I guess that didn't work...
I'll get it fixed.

http://scotch.agagames.com/HiYah-game.zipÃ,  here is the game exe, and the main distribution should be updated now.

Here goes my review for the "One Room One Week 2" competition:

NOTE: If this is the wrong place to post such a review, then please let me know and I'll delete this post and put in somewhere else. I wasn't too sure about where to post but I couldn't find a place anywhere else.

If you find my review too picky or think I didn't review your game in a fair way, then go to hell ;D (or PM me)...

ALONE IN THE NIGHT

NOTE: I didn't finish this game yet.

+ Nice character animations (for example when you try to use the telephone)...
+ Good GUI (left-click to interact/use and right-click to look)...

- Story seems worn-out (too "5-Days-A-Stranger" like - when I came into the house I actually first checked the door behind my back and was not surprised at all when I read: "I can't open it. It seems locked" or something like that)...
- The main character is not scared at all of the ghost. He talks to it normally at calm...
- The dialog options in the dialog with the ghost don't turn off properly...

ANNA

NOTE: I didn't finish this game yet.

+ I though I would have scripted a lot in AGS, but the three-dimensionality of this game made me wonder how it was done...
+ Good dialogues...

- I first thought it was in first-perspective throughout the dialogue...
- It seems a little clueless right after the start. There's not a lot you can do and you have no idea what you could do really...

ANOTHER

NOTE: I didn't come far enough to review it yet...

BAGHDAD

+ Funny dialogues and idea...

- No graphical effort (which may have been because of the game style)...

BALLONFACE

+ Good dialogues...
+ Interesting and creative game...

- Too less graphical effort (not even one shade is in the whole game)...
- Is this really a one room game? First you are in the ballon (which is one room to me) and then you are floating around in space...

DANCE TILL YOU DROP

NOTE: I didn't come far enough to review it yet...

GLADIATOR QUEST

NOTE: I didn't come far enough to review it yet...

IN LIMBO

- Too less graphical effort...
- No puzzle? I mean what you have to do in this game to finish it is not a puzzle at all...

I THINK WE ARE LOST

NOTE: I didn't finish this game yet.

+ Lip-syncing done in a good way...
+ Good dialogues...

- Ripped character sprites...

SAMMY SPERM

+ Lip-syncing done in a good way...
+ Creative game idea...

- No real puzzle, only a quiz which is very easy to win by trial and error...

SHEET: THE ART OF ART

NOTE: I didn't finish this game yet.

+ Creative game idea...

- The only cursor mode you have to use is talk to...
- Almost no real puzzle included...

THE FIND

NOTE: I didn't finish this game yet.

+ Good graphical effort...
+ Good dialogues...

- Seem stuck after having done literally everything...
- Graphical bugs when trying to go through the door in the spaceship...

Thanks for your time, after all there where some great games in there and I am really excited to hear who will win...

The only one I left out is the broken one.
And the ones I didn't have the time to play yet.

QuoteWith reference to Baghdad and Balloonface, I think the graphics were fine, and suited the games perfectly.

Well, that's just my opinion then, I guess. I couldn't help thinking about how great only one more shade would've looked like in Ballonface for example.

Dance Til You Drop - I'm a bit stuck.

I'm stuck with the same problem in Dance till you drop...

Quite frankly I don't know how that could be figured out (I think I have a fairly close idea about the solution, but nothing worked so far) and that kind of ruined an excellent game for me...  :-\  I still want to finish it though, but I need a walkthrough.

Sidenote: how do you create a spoiler alert (the one that has to be selected to be readable)? I tried [div class="spoiler"] but it doesn't work.

Spoiler

(The year is 48 (1984-36).) I have a problem with '12', though: the 2nd Tuesday in 1984 is the 10th of the month, not the 12nd. It's only the 12nd this year (2005). This looks like a major bug to me in the game, unless I'm missing something.

I had the same problem too. I agree that it's not logic at all. I guess, about anyone would assume that the 2nd Tuesday in 1984 is meant, rather than the 2nd tuesday this year.
In the end, I solved it by looking up Simmons' biography though. :P

Just out of curiousity, the gladitorial arena in Gladiator Quest, that is a room, isn't it?  It seems to be at least a 2 room game, which is a really odd reason to be disqualified, but I just want to be sure about what I could vote on.

I would say that the arena portion, being a mini game, is allowed by the rules.

Quote from: scotchBy a room, we do not necessarily mean one crm file. If you want to use other rooms for effects such as time passing, changes in the style of the room, minigames such as the sniper mode in 6DA etc, that's fine but the bulk of the game should be centered around one location.

The puzzles and story telling part of the game take place in the prison, the arena is just an additional minigame.

Also, in Gladiator Quest, it's all 1 background, the viewport is just shifted over and locked to the different part of the background, if you walk over to the guard you see the wall that is on the left side of the arena.

Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2 - ENTRIES NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD
Post by: Rocco on Wed 20/07/2005 15:10:36
it depends on the game, but normally adventure games build there story like
a cycle and at the end all comes together and the game makes sense.
So if i dont vote for a good game, reasonable cause im not a good adventure player
(and im a very bad adventure player, with no patience) and cant go through, this is not fair to the gamemaker, so i guess its better dont voting - my opinion.

How do you know what's in there if you haven't finished the game? I nearly gave up on Gladiator Quest before discovering the arena. That's a big part of the game.

On the other hand, I recognise that playing the game solely from a walkthrough isn't a good idea either. You can't judge the puzzles/gameplay if you've got the answers in front of you.

If you're having trouble with a game, post here (with [ hide ] markup) for some clues.
Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2 - ENTRIES NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD
Post by: Helm on Wed 20/07/2005 16:51:06
most of these games are pretty straightforward, and if they're not completely, usually looking at the help file that came with the game helps. Anna can get difficult, but is really really worth it, the rest are easy besides gladiator quest but in that case it's not the puzzles that are difficult but the arcade parts. Dance 'Til You Drop is probably the only game that's really involved and might take more than one session to finish. I can't see why people would 'give up' on orow games.

I think that if you haven't finished a game, it would be best if you consider why you haven't finished it. You haven't finished it because it's not appealing and irritating as a game, or you haven't finished it because you didn't invest enough effort and time into it. If it's the former, then you SHOULD vote and vote harshly because keeping a player interested is an important part of making a game. If the latter, it's more your fault than the game's and your votes should reflect that.

Post by: Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens on Wed 20/07/2005 17:50:57
Exactly, and as far as I am aware, there isn't a voting option for 'best ending'.  Just play the games; if you like what you see (or don't), let your vote reflect it.  Simple as that.

I just voted on the games but got curious why the voting system has changed from last time? I found it finer-tuned for voting to vote on each specific area of a game (graphics, music, etc. and then aggregating those to get a winner), rather than giving a single score for each game.

Quote from: Helm on Fri 01/07/2005 09:13:44
In action, it was proven that people voted great on all categories on the games they liked. This made the top few games come out with boosted scores across the board, whereas I think it would make more sense for some games to win scripting and graphics, others music etc. This was also the paradigm in the AGS Awards, with Apprentice sweeping most awards ( in my opinion) needlessly. People don't seem to understand the concept of categorical voting on any other level than rewarding the creators for nice 'gaming experiences' on the whole.

People don't seem to understand the concept of categorical voting on any other level than rewarding the creators for nice 'gaming experiences' on the whole.

Last time I did that, too, simply because (for me, at least), Automation was a clearcut winner (The Bar came in a very close 2nd). This time, though, I didn't find anything clear-cut, so I would've gone for categories. It's no big deal, though, I was just curious.

My wife and I are hopping off this island of ours for our belated honeymoon-ish jaunt around mainland Japan.  Assuming voting ends on schedule, I won't be around for the announcement, but I wish luck to all the competitors.  I'll post my thoughts on each and every game when I get back.

I'm very excited for voting to end, not because I'm excited for the results, but because I can't wait to hear comments and critiques on my game (and all the other games) which, up to this point, have been stifled in fear of influencing the vote.

Good luck to all!

I'm sure pretty much everyone that is going to vote has already, so at this stage my advice would be to wait a bit; there may be enhanced and bug-fixed versions of one room games after the competition (I know for a fact at least one game will have such a release >:)) so it might be worth it to hold off a bit.  Still, if you don't want to wait (and want to vote) the choice is yours, just don't let it keep you from the re-releases!

I suggested to the creators of the games in the first OROWC that they should find alternative hosting after the competition was finished. I don't particularly want to be hosting 25MB of other people's games for the rest of time :P

Thanks to everyone who entered!  Well done to all the winners.

Balloon Face was the best game for me, but yes, it had no puzzles worth mentioning... people are incapable of voting properly, we know this from the first competition.  IMO Gladiator Quest deserved scripting, music and probably art, even if it was too hard.  OROW has never been about the competition to me anyway, more about getting people to make games, and it succeeded there.

No puzzles, no. I can't imagine why anybody voted for it, let alone the plurality. Same goes for the music - unless you count writing the synth I used, which you shouldn't, it took pretty much exactly as long to make as it takes to listen to, which makes sense considering it's just me basically hitting a virtual pot with a virtual wooden spoon at random for two minutes. I thought GQ was the obvious winner for music... there must be some sort of curse on Ghormak.

The writing is really all there is to it. It's not that good either, but I guess if people liked it I can't complain. ;)

Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition 2 - WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Post by: Rui 'Trovatore' Pires on Wed 27/07/2005 17:22:37
I was one of the ones who voted Baloonface for puzzles, so I thought I might as well say why - I read "puzzles" as "gameplay", which is the closest. I think the quality of the puzzles largely define the gameplay experience. Balloonface had two puzzles - a dialog puzzle, and a "figure out how to move and where to go" puzzle. No, they are not the best puzzles I've ever seen by themselves, but in the context of the game I found them great. I don't know why, either, I guess I'm wacky - but there must be other people out there who agree, looking at the results.

Maybe it's not so much a matter of "people not knowing how to vote" as "people not being able to vote for what they really wanted and so make do", hmm?

IMO Gladiator Quest deserved scripting, music and probably art, even if it was too hard.

The difficulty pretty much emulated the old games as well as the graphics and music did, hard going on brutally impossible. I kinda liked that though, it was the same feeling of getting past a difficult puzzle, when you beat a champion it felt totally worth it. The presentation was great too, the whole cracked warez group thing was good. Heard some complaints about the parser too which i think are unjustified.

Well, that was fun!

I think the voting system for future OROWs should be more like a poll, rating the games from most favorite to least favorite... instead of giving them an actual judgemental score. Or perhaps that should be another category. at times I found myself voting for it as the quality of the game, not which one I liked best. Maybe some people did the opposite of what I did.

Some of them, like Gladiator Quest, I really couldn't believe had been made in a week... you guys' productivity is quite amazing!

And finally, my guesses about who had made each game proved to be completely and utterly wrong, so none of you are as predictable as I thought ;)

Congratulations to the winners from me too.

I'd like to point out that Gladiator Quest was not made by myself only, it was made by Ghormak and I. I know the orow games are supposed to be single person efforts with the help of one person allowed, but GQ was very much an evenly shared creation, myself doing most of the designing, the writing, the puzzles and the art, and gore doing the scripting the implementing of the puzzles and the SID music. Which I guess explains a little what CJ is talking about: it's the product of long hours work by two people for a week, not one.

a few words on some of the games:

Anna - One of the best AGS games I've played so far, I was completely sold on the premise, enjoyed the subtle effects like the 'layer' walking and the grayscale, the writing was very good and all that. Good pacing, the dialogue, although heavy, was on a topic I enjoyed and it delt with it pleasingly, if not a bit predictably towards the end. This is exactly the sort of game the AGS scene can release, but very difficultly would ever be in a commerical context ( unless it were IF ). Congratulations, Vince. I loved it, and hope you make more. Only complaint would be that, as smart the puzzles were, it was very apparent that they were 'puzzles' puzzles, which sorta killed the suspension of disbelief. On the one hand, they made up for it by being smart ( the 'not completely solvable' text puzzle was brilliant ) but on the other hand, they did seem more artificial than would be allowed ( towers of hanoi, mostly). But it was I bet a lot of scripting, and maybe the complaint is with the genre and not your game particularily. Thank you for making this and giving it to us.

Alone in the Night: Nice graphics, and probably the best rotoscoped main character I've seen in a graphical adventure of the kind ever, bar none. Good work on that. I was dissapointed when the game turned a bit silly, with the ghost, the picking up of burning logs and the breaking of the fourth wall : "It's an adventure game! LOL!", "This would never work in real life!" thing. It got a bit generic on the puzzle end, really. But the presentation was solid, and being the first game to play for most people on this orow compo, it set the bar high on terms on graphical quality.

Dance 'Til You Drop had a main problem for me. Although it's well made (I'd do without the gradient dithering on the walls, though) and it shows there's much care and effort that has went into all aspects of it's making, it's too straight (to make a bad pun). Meaning, it's a honest-to-god day-in-the-life-of Richard Simmons, and this premise, regardless of how well it's executed, will never be one of my favourites. However, I played through a significant portion of it, and when I voted for it, I voted on the objective work that had gone into it. Perhaps I would expect less dancing and more hilariousness, but each to his own.

Sheet could have made a great game if the author had more time, I guess. It looked neat and the premise was fresh. I dug the expression on the pen. I urge the author to extend this into a more fleshed out game.

My thoughts:

Alone in the Night:
Like Helm, I liked the animation. Nicely bluescreened - I don't think you could really describe it as rotoscoped as that means tracing animation frames from video frames. It did seem like the game was just tacked on to showcase the main character though.
[I didn't have a guess for the author.]

Anna:
Great scripting and a fantastic visual style. I thought the philosophical dialog was rather weak, and forcing the pacing (no text skip) very cruel. I liked the twist at the end.
[I guessed Helm.]

Another:
Nice interface, but too short to get into.
[I guessed AJA.]

Baghdad:
Made me laugh, but didn't seem like a lot of effort was put into it.
[I guessed Grundy.]

Balloon Face:
I thought it was highly entertaining. I played through it twice. Obviously it wasn't much of a "game" but it was a great experience.
[I guessed DG MacPhee.]

Dance Til You Drop:
Great concept and beautifully crafted but a rather loose plot and the safe puzzle is internally logically impossible to solve. I think I enjoyed it more NOT knowing who Richard Simmons is. I imagined the character Don 'No Soul' Simmons from Amazon Women on the Moon.
[I guessed Gilbot (because of the graphics) - but it seemed too American.]

Gladiator Quest:
Awesome presentation, down to the readme, "hacked by", music, etc. I couldn't be bothered with the combat though.

Hiyah:
Clearly made by an excellent artist. Seemed very rushed through.
[I guessed Vince12.]

In Limbo:
Not really a game, more a failed experiment for a novel inventory system :)

I Think:
Great music and eerie sound, plus some freaky speech made up for some rough graphics. The game ended before it got started.
[I didn't have a guess.]

Sammy Sperm:
Certainly a memorable game. The punchline was pretty good, reminiscent of Woody Allen's old ...Sex... film. The music seemed particularly unfitting.
[I guessed SSH, mostly because of who was doing the voice acting.]

Sheet:
An interesting concept, but hard to see where it could be taken.
[I guessed Hellomoto.]

The Find:
I liked the setting, the graphics and the music. I thought this game showed a lot of potential for expansion into a larger game.
[I guessed Chicky.]

Overall, I enjoyed the variety of the games, but I was disappointed that puzzles took a back seat this time around.

That's interesting because one of the many reasons I guessed sammy sperm was Grundislav was because of the voice acting. I knew that if AGA and Ghormak and Grundislav himself were involved, then it had to be the Grundislav game.

As for Baghdad, I must admit that I didn't work on it as much as I wanted. It did take me a long time to make that background, which is not a real picture but instead it's a photoshop, BY THE WAY, but then I ran into the problem where I didn't have enough pieces to build the full characters, so at the last minute I just used Roger's body to get it done.

I also wanted to use a different method for moving and flying, which I had to throw out because I realized that it was just not going to work on AGS if I wanted to use the mouse.

Though if anyone has suggestions for the stand-alone release of Baghdad, send me a message! I'm open to some ideas but nothing that will take it further than one room, cuz you know... I gotta work on other stuff.

I found 'Balloonface' the most entertaining game of all; granted, graphics, music and puzzles were behind other games, but as a whole, I enjoyed it the most, mainly because of the entire surreal situation and the wacky dialogue.

I liked 'Dance till you drop' a lot, mostly because of its atmosphere; the music is great, just as the graphics. I didn't mind that the game was linear (it's a short game, after all), but the UI was a bit on the rough side (very small controls made it somewhat hard to work with the inventory, etc.)

One particular thing annoyed me: the safe bug with the impossible date of birth. I didn't know that Richard Simmons is a real person, so I never realized that I could've searched for the date, so I tried figuring it out, but couldn't. This took most of the enjoyment out of the game.  :-\

The other game I loved at first was the Gladiator, but then I didn't finish it: I already talked to the characters in the cell, but then I had to leave and there was no save. After getting home, I just couldn't get myself to start all over again. I think omitting save in an adventure is a huge mistake (no matter that old games worked that way - people didn't like it even then.) I was amused by the whole cracked-game idea, though and loved the way the game started :)

Though I am still not thinking of releasing the game even as including the next rooms and events which makes it a real adventure game...

I can't remember how I voted now, though I'm surprised Gladiator didn't get more votes.  It had a lot of substance.

As far as balloonface and puzzles, I don't really understand how it could be said to not have any puzzles.  At first, there is no way to progress.  Through interacting with the interface and following the next logical steps, you manage to progress.  Just because you don't use the whistle on the buiscuits doesn't mean it's not a puzzle.  I can't recall who I voted for on music, I wouldn't have voted on Balloonface because of music "quality" or craftsmanship, but on ambient feeling.  It just fit the game pefectly, made the whole thing feel a bit like an avante garde art instalation.  Technical proficiency is important, but these aren't coffee tables, they're games, and that means sometimes style should win over substance.

Not that substance isn't good too :D

I am glad to see that Anna was one of the games with the highest score, but I'm equally sad that the game it tied with (Alone in the Night) was the most generic and self-referential of the bunch (no offense, I see that effort went into this game, and the character animation is awesome, but it's also exactly the kind of point and click game I'm getting so tired of).

I see the OROW competitions not only as an opportunity to make games, but as an opportunity to turn wild and crazy ideas into games, ideas you might not be able to fully work into a complete, ambitious big game. Games that have a little something in them gameplay-wise you might not see in other AGS games. The "One Room" criterion makes OROW an ideal testing ground for new features, because nobody is going to complain if your game is too short! "Generic AGS Game - Lite Version" is the last thing I want to see.

If you think I'm asking for too much, then you're probably right. After all, I don't really like adventure games as we know them.

Wow, thanks for the kind words and the votes everybody.  I wasn't sure how well Anna would go over since it's not the standard game that every one is used to.  Congratulations also to AJA for the tie.

A few responses:

Quote from: HelmOnly complaint would be that, as smart the puzzles were, it was very apparent that they were 'puzzles' puzzles, which sorta killed the suspension of disbelief.

Haha, I totally agree.  If I were playing this game, not having made it, I would think 'What kind of idiot engineer designed a computer using a tower of Hanoi puzzle and a lights-out-style virus remover?' I blame that on the lack of time spent on design and planning.  I had the idea for the pseudo-3D and the basic story, but my puzzle design consisted of "...and there will be puzzles."  :-\   They were fun to program though!

Quote from: Steve McCreaGreat scripting and a fantastic visual style. I thought the philosophical dialog was rather weak, and forcing the pacing (no text skip) very cruel. I liked the twist at the end.

You can skip text when Hero is shown in the room.  It's only the text that is laid over a GUI that can't be skipped.  This is due to the way I implemented it in combination with a lack of planning and time.  This will be fixed for the official release.

Speaking of which, I'm polishing the game up for a full release.  Any comments and suggestions welcome via PM.

I did want to do a full runthrough of comments for all the games, but I've just returned from a long trip and I've got to sleep for 16 hours now.  I'll get to them eventually.

Thanks again!

It was fun participating in this contest, and I may enter future contests aswell, yet the circumstances were especially favorable here. There were some great entries. Thanks for those who voted for me, even though I can't even bring myself to call it an actual game.

It originally had another character, an afro-american brush, but due to the time limit I had to cut him, and thus the puzzle element was kinda reduced to nothing. I liked working on it, so I might pick it up again after I finish TMC, and make it a full-featured game with multiple rooms and such.

Congrats to the winners and looking forward to the next OROW.

My probably useless and definitely late thoughts:

Alone in the Night:
Excellent graphics.  The story was a bit silly, but the production values were excellent.  Nothing exciting and new (except the excellent - if slow moving - main character) but it covered all the bases of your standard adventure game, and covered them all well.  It was a well made and polished adventure game and it is clear why this game won.  I loved the "slow camera man" comment after the vertical pan.

Another:
Very short and very easy, but sharp graphics.  I would have loved to see more and for it to have a bit of a story.

Baghdad:
I loved Baghdad and was laughing out loud at several points during the game.  There wasn't a whole lot there, but it was altogether an enjoyable little joke game.

Balloon Face:
Terribly funny.  "MY CLARITY OF MIND IS UNMATCHED!!!"  Even though the dialog was hilarious through out, I did get a little bit bored wading through so much of it.  (Though that is a terribly hypocritical thing to say having delivered a 15 minute cutscene in my game...  :P)  I'm not sure that this game deserved the puzzle award, but the writing award was an easy pick here.

Dance Til You Drop:
A hilarious tribute to a great man.  Graphics were awesome.  I guessed the author correctly because only ProgZmax could have sprited that much in a week and still had time to make an entertaining game.  My gripes were with the waaay too difficult to navigate inventory and the questionable cursor hotspots.

Gladiator Quest:
I loved the readme and found it a necessary read in order to play the game.  The fighting was great.  The best part of this game, in my opinion, was that each Champion fighter had his own distinct fighting style, and learning this fighting style from the trainer was important for forming your battle strategies.  Amazing scripting there.  Well done!  And thank god for the wuss patch!

Hiyah:
Great art, but some fairly illogical puzzles.  I didn't like that I had to stand in a specific place in order to use a certain object.  It seemed that a bit of time could have made this into a much better game.

In Limbo:
The game crashed for me when I was to go to heaven.  Good GUI and fairly good graphics, but not a lot here.  Seems like a good starting point for a very good game though.

I Think:
I guessed the author correctly here as well thanks to the adeptly crafted horror atmosphere.  The ripped graphics left something to be desired though and quite often made me laugh and lose my sense of immersion, which in turn took away from the atmosphere.  Good voice effects.

Sammy Sperm:
Fantastic voice acting, but not much of a game around it.  Funny concept and a satisfying climax.  (Bah dum ching)

Sheet:
I think this could really be fleshed out into a great game rather than a simple dialog puzzle.  Allowing the doodle to get inked, which gives him some more freedom and possible actions...  Then he can get colored, which gives him even more actions... then get a walking animation...  Then he could get... rendered in 3D?  Whatever, it could turn into a fun and novel game with some fun and innovative puzzles.

The Find:
I loved the Dig, and so loved the direction that this game was moving.  Good graphics.  But the puzzles were a bit weak.  I would have liked to see more.  It was fun.

I really enjoyed taking part in the One Room One Week contest.  It allowed me to explore a fun and different idea that I had floating around in my head without it dominating more than a week of my time.  I hope we have more of these contests, because I think they are an excellent way to practice scripting or explore fun new gameplay innovation and test out your ideas on the community.

Thanks again!  Expect a polished release of Anna in the next couple of weeks!

That was the exact plan as it had formed in my mind that fateful evening when I had the idea for it.

Thanks to everybody who voted for Alone in the Dark. It was a huge load of work but I think it works quite nicely visually. I'm suprised that the main character worked that well (it's me, omg!). At first I just thought of taking photos of myself and drawing over them but thanks to Mad Reizka I decided to try this. Well, I'm glad you liked it. As I'm not very good at coming up with interesting and original ideas, I tried to use the idea of a ghost house and focus on the graphics. I just tried to make a game that I would like to play myself (meaning that there won't be too much dialog and it won't be too hard to finish).

And congrats, Vince Twelve, that game of yours was an incredible piece of coding. I loved the puzzles though I didn't really know what to do at first because I kinda skipped the intro... :-\

Balloon Face:
Like I said before, I'm not a big fan of long dialog sequences, so I just skipped pretty much everything the first time I played it, and when I had finished I thought: "Wtf?" So, then I read here on the forums comments about people saying it's a hilarious game, so I decided to replay it without skipping anything. And it was very funny, though I still thought there was too much dialog, but I liked it a lot more after the second try. "I win" ...what a way to end a game :D (I still smile every time I think of that game.)

Dance Til You Drop:
I liked this game the most. It just seemed to have a lot more content than any of the other entries. And I loved the idea :) ...though I hate puzzles like the safe puzzle. I had figured out the correct date (no googling) but I thought the numbers would be between 0-9 :P So, that's where I screwed it up.

Gladiator Quest:
First of all, the readme was a bit annoying since I'd just like to read the necessary part (how to play, what should I do, etc.) and in this case it was quite hard to find. Also, as I have a TFT display, the AGI plugin forced me to play it using 320x200 which is very blurry in full screen and tiny in windowed mode so that was a bit annoying. I also, like many it seems, didn't finish it because you couldn't save. But otherwise it looked beautiful and the fighting was well done but I didn't really know what I was supposed to do. Maybe I should've read the readme entirely. :P

Thanks again for voting!
Maybe I'll try again next time with something... more original ;)
