Tomorrow it will be 6 months since the last OROW competition (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=21575), and 9 months since the first (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=20162.0), so I am posting to gauge interest in having the next one some time soon.
For people that aren't aware of the competition I'll explain how it works.Ã, You have one week to make an AGS game that is set in one location, you must work alone or in a pair.Ã, There are no other restrictions because the goal of this competition has always been to get people making and finishing games.Ã, In contrast to other competitions that have longer time limits, loftier gameplay goals and large teams, OROW gets a lot of entries; there have been about 23 so far, across the two competitions.
It seems that this sort of small game also encourages people to experiment, a lot of the entries are not your typical AGS games.Ã, Most participants seemed to find the competition a good experience, and everyone is encouraged to enter.
If you are interested in taking part, post here to let me know, and also if you have any suggestions for changes to the rules.
I was just thinking about making a one room game. I would certainly join in.
I won't have time to enter this round, but I just wanted to say that I truly encourage anyone with a few hours to spare every day of the OROW week (you never know when/if something goes wrong. It's good to have time!) to go for it. Set realistic goals, and then ACHIEVE them. Making Gladiator Quest with Helm was the most fun game creating experience I've ever had, and I'm very glad we did it.
I'm in, as long as I don't have to work the week it happens. I've been looking forward to the next OROW!
Sounds cool, I'm looking forward to it.
Encouraged by the last time, added to the AGSy mood I've been on lately, I'm in if I just have time to spare for it.
I want to enter, but it'll depend on when it is because I'm working so much for school and uh... work, it's no longer funny to even entertain the idea of spending a full week making a game. But I really want to. If I can come up with a good idea that I'll probably have to code on my own, I'll do it.
I too want to enter, but I'm not sure if I can because another game I'm working on is nearing its finishing stages. But I have an idea I would like to turn into an OROW game, so we'll see!
I want to enter, too.
I would possibly enter... I'm beginning work on a project I hope to finish but this would let me finish something on the side so I can prove to myself that I can finish something (so far all I've done is 40% of an Insta-Game) and some random artwork.
As long as it's not next week (I'm away all week on an army preparation camp thing) I'll try and enter. All depends on me getting an idea that works in one room.
Mmmm I have an idea. I guess I'll try too. ;D
I was going to post and suggest next week, but it seems that isn't ok... would the 22nd to the 28th be ok for people?
Also, since I have announced this quite far in advance I am going to have to impose some restrictions on the content of the game to be released when it starts... nothing too restrictive, just enough that I can be sure you didn't start early :)
Surely we can start planning early? As I have the blueprints of the game "engine" in my head already...
How exciting, thanks scotch!
Unfortunately, I will not be participating this time. I got a tough month of January with lots of things to do. Maybe next time.
I'm still looking forward to seeing what people come up with this time, though.
I have a suggestion: Let a theme be given like in MAGS or ATC? The theme and rule would be given on the day the composition is started; so everyone would have to start making the game on the same day, not before. Also some people may find it hard to make a game about 'anything' (at least I do find it hard); a given theme would ease this.
I'm in ... as long as it's not next week ... school starts, and it's gonna be hectic. (besides my dad's on leave, so he'll force me to do all my homework!)
I want to get in on this. I have another wacky idea I want to try out... but arrgh am I busy. I don't stand a chance of finishing anything presentable in a week. I'm out.
But I look forward to playing and voting! I hope to see lots of experimental and weird uses of AGS this time!
I might enter... if I have enough spare time.

same here
I'm also on the might-enter-list.
EDIT:
Anyone interested in forming a pair with me for this comp? Pm me, if you are...
Hey, another OROW thingy! Good stuff.
Well, depending on when it starts and if I can sneak in some spare time for it, you can tentatively put me on the entrants list too.
Entering my "Elevator" game into the first OROW competition gave me some good feedback and ideas in how to proceed with my current game-in-production, so it's a great learning experience to partake.
Best of luck to all the entrants.
I'll try to make something up...
This would be the first time I ever enter in a "game creation" competition.
i said i'd enter last time and i didnt so i wont say i'll enter.... but that isn't a certanty

ditto
I'm looking foward to see the next comp.
I would also like to enter if I can find the time. I'm a bit busy the next couple of days/weeks. I really enjoyed playing along in the first round...
So, when can we expect this to actually be? For me, the sooner the better, my school holidays end soon.
22nd.
Are we allowed to plan ahead at all? And if so, is there anything we should know about? I mean, for me, coming up with the idea is the hard part. I made my ESPER game in a week and a half, but the idea I'd been writing for a couple years.
I think the point is to make the whole game in a week, including the planning (that's part of game developing). And as scotch said

Wouldn't hurt to start thinking about it, whatever constraints I specify won't be very limiting. Don't start making games early, though, it just wouldn't be fair to those people who are into the competition part of OROW.
I think my suggestion was useful for this problem.

I'm in.
I had a hell of a good time making Dance Til' You Drop and would 'possibly' be interested in doing a game this time if I had a like-minded (and dedicated) individual working with me. Doing all the work in Dance Til' You Drop in 4 days was just too exhausting. My advice is not to enter it for any purpose other than to make a fun game since awards tend to leave some people with a sour taste in their mouths. Just bear in mind it's a bit of fun and a chance to show what you're capable of in a tight time constraint.
ProgZmax, I would be interested in working with you if you need a partner (and if we can have partners). My art skills are decent, and I am good at scripting (although I've only scripted half a game, I know I can easily learn code).
Why do we have to wait until the 22nd? It seems that most of the people here is ready now :P
I'm sort of not ready. So let's just wait untill the 22nd.
The idea of the competition is to get people to make games, so i'm sure if you start thinking about it now there won't be any problems, think of an idea now, and start planning it properly during the week to give everyone a fair chance in the competition.
If nobody minds, can the competition be postponed till a week later, on the 29th? Please? I want to enter this one, but I've got papers going on from the 21st to the 28th.

Actually that would be good for me as well as I have a bunch of assignments in for 26th. If we do delay I'll enter - 90% sure.
Noo! Booo!
So is there a topic or is it anything you like, cause I sort of want to do a game about paranormal stuff.
If you read the thread you can probably gather there won't be any very restrictive rules, especially on theme, but there won't be any point starting early, lets leave it at that.
As for moving the date again... I think the problem is OROW has so many potential entrants that any week I pick will be problematic for at least a few of them, so I am afraid it is still going to be starting on the 22nd. Even if you don't have a lot of time consider entering, especially if you have an interesting idea, you could try something smaller than you otherwise might.
Does anyone who can do the graphics and help with the plot/puzzle design want to team up? If so, drop me a pm.
I'm in. I've only got a small-time project right now, and DM:DBD won't start production until I finish the damn script, so I've got time and will :)
Grrrr....well, it better be held more often, then. Perhaps a Monthly One Room, One Week (MOROW)? Or even a Twice a Month One Room, One Week (TAMOROW)?
If it's held too frequently it'll clash with MAGS, also it'll be an annoying distraction which draws people away from real games they're working on.
Maybe twice a year is really not frequently enough, but in my opinion once every 3 months (quarterly) isthe maximum acceptable limit.
Hmm only a week... next week :/
I'll try....
Anyone fancy teaming up and being my art beotch.... i mean creative technical assistant and visual production officer?
Like I said I'll team with some. Starting the 22nd? Hmmm... I have a four-five page paper assignment on terrorism due for English Comp & Research and a bit o' reading from a book to do but I'm pretty sure I can still squeeze in time for a mini one-week game. I'm already working on a game (see sig) that will hopefully be my first finished game but I can post-pone production on it to enter a contest like this with a partner. It'd be a good learning experience.
PM if you're interested. I can script, draw backgrounds, and draw characters but I cannot animate arms or legs very well, and I have no experience with making sound or music. In other words, if you can make music and script please make love to me through the PM box.
