Title: One Room One Week Competition 3 - Competition Over
Post by: scotch on Sun 22/01/2006 00:40:52
The third official OROW competition commences now!

Here are the rules:
Ã,  You must make an AGS game within the next week.
Ã,  You should work alone, but may find one person to help you if you need to.

There is no room restriction this time, might seem funny for a "One Room" competition, but it always ends in discussions about what a room is and I want to see if people have the restraint not to aim too high.Ã,  So you are allowed to do what you like but be aware of what people have managed to make in past OROW competitions.Ã,  It is much better to aim low and get something done than to aim for what you think is the most you can do in a week (you probably won't be able to do half of what you expect).Ã,  Everyone is encouraged to enter, I'll will try to.

Have fun!

Wooo! I will do this just for fun and for more scripting and graphic practice before I start further production on Karl the Karmite...

Is there no theme? I thought we had to wait for a theme so we didn't start early.

And if anyone wants to work with me, please PM me. Now. Do It.

Oh no! But I have no clue where to start without a theme.  ???

I'm staring at a blank background in PSP.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!

I forgot, West Coast America and Britain have the possibility of being on two seperate days simultaneously! I wasn't ready!

Can Americans get an extra day?

...oh wait... we kinda do....  But still! I missed the whole first day of the competition! Noooo!

Oh well. I'M STILL ENTERING, BABY! (gets in TARDIS, goes back in time three years, and starts producing a game that will r0xx0r every pair of s0xx0rz that has ever been worn...)

Out of curiosity, without rules means that the game doesn't have to be an adventure game?
Title: Re: One Room One Week Competition 3 - Make Games Now!
Post by: MrColossal on Sun 22/01/2006 07:37:22
People always try and make things that are huge and too big to make, one room one week was made to force someone to limit their scope and just "make something already, dammit!"

Do whatever you want Edmundo, this is about making games.

Oh, I just asked to clear that up, because I remember in the previous two it was definitely "must be an adventure game". Now I can make a pong clone!!1

Pong is an adventure game. :=

A quick question:

Does one room mean one AGS room, or one specific area in which the game happens? For example, am I limited to only have the game take place in the confines of what the AGS editor would define to be one specific room, or can I use several such rooms as long as they all define one room?

The reason I ask is that my skills in coding and all that aren't quite up to par with what I've seen from some past AGSers in other OROW's. It would be much easier for me, for instance, to have several different rooms describing changing states of the room rather than doing it all in one room... ie. room with no lights, room with dim lights, room with full lights, room with full lights and a hole broken in the wall, etc...

Well, okay, I guess... But restraint is a funny thing. You could make a 57-room game and say "It's all in one room! The main character is astrally projecting!"
Title: Re: One Room One Week Competition 3 - Make Games Now!
Post by: magintz on Sun 22/01/2006 12:11:03
Well technically it's one room you're allowed, but this could be a million rooms in one .crm file or one room divided into many .crm files showing close-ups and different angles.

As far as I am aware it's a very lose definition, and it certanly helps to have played the last OROW games to get an idea. I'll be keeping an eye closely on the competition but doubt I will enter as I don't have a single idea in my noggin.

I can, the game is called COUTN DOWN.

Just use a LARGE font to draw the numbers 56 thru 0 onto 57 background images, and then import them into room56.crm thru room0.crm.
In the "Player enters room (after fadein)" event of room1.crm thru room56.crm add the script:
Wait(40);
cEgo.ChangeRoom(cEgo.Room - 1);

Then in the "Player enters room (after fadein)" event of room0.crm add the script:
Wait(40);
Display("BOOM!");
QuitGame(0);

Just change the player's starting room to 56 and compile...

Simple eh? :=

I actually came up with an idea last night before I went to bed after desperately trying to come up with an idea, so I'll try to finish a game although I have to write a paper for English this week. I also think we should have until the end of the 29th because the weekend is a good time to finish up any last minute stuff.

That was true of the previous two competitions, but there is no such restriction this time. Reread the initial post.

I guess I won't be entering the competition (unless someone teamed with me and did the scripting).

I'm having troubles trying to be aware of just that. Are the games still available somewhere? Both of the threads (the second (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=21575) and the first (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=20162)) point to http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/aga/ where (understandably) the games aren't available anymore. :(

Unfortunately, the same goes for the temporary mirror at http://koti.mbnet.fi/tk-/files/AGS/ and only seven (out of twenty-four) games seem to have an entry on the AGS Games page (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php), namely:

Just a question: I noticed on the previos OROW's that all games were initially released anonymously, to avoid "favourizing" in the voting process. Is this the case this time around too?

If it is, mwahahaha and others might want to keep a little more quiet about all the megalomanic plans...

Seriously! I started a day late as it was, since "January 22nd" doesn't mean "January 22nd" to everyone the same way.

I'm almost done, and I'll probably make the deadline, but there are just some crap issues I think I'm going to run into.

BTW: as usual, story is my strong point, and everything else is my weak point. If someone likes the game once it is released, I would send them a box full of virgins and beer if they would take and make a "super-duper extendo" version of the game, with better graphics and some animations... The virgins might be dead by the time it gets there, but you'd be helping a brother out tremendously... I might not win the comp, but I think I've got a great idea on my hands here.

Mine is quite the opposite, whilst there are some story aspects, it doesn't go out of it's way to explain itself... at all.  It's quite the opposite to tCotS, in that it focuses on puzzles and design rather than dialog and story.

I actually plan on making a full game out of it later this year, and that should clear it up.

Sooo.... What's going on? Can we at least see a list of the games that were entered, or the entrants? I'm just afraid that I didn't get my game in by the deadline, but I'm also interested to see what I'm up against.
Same, I have a feeling that the Pm didn't go through, and I just want to be reassured.

Yes I've been made aware of that... it's not really a big deal I think, if someone very well known put their name in then I think there'd be problems, but I'll let this one slide.

i have played all 8 games, and I'm impressed how many different approaches were made in this competition,
thats makes it unique and should never be restricted with themes or rigorous gidelines.
So I'm sad, that i didnt had enough time this week to enter with another approach,- maybe next time.
i enjoyed all 8 games except "illusions", wich seems to be a pixel hunt an not very couraged graphical art.
only on game use the new rule, of making more then one room, what is understandable cause its nearly impossible to make a good concept for 1 room in 1 week.

overall i like most:
24Hours - > my favorite (cool role playing elements, with puzzels who are not very difficult and amazingly merged with the game progress, also the graphics are very good) - head offÃ,  :)
Bad Luck -> (Great animations, good humor, standard 1 room approach)
Tomb of the moon (technical top, very good intuitive interface, game in game, indy flair)

nostalgic c64 feelings:
blackmail in brooklyn (was very much fun, but need a bit more finetuning with the controls)
Spacemaze (not really a game)

very unique atmosphere:
heart of abraxas - (havent explored more then 2 hotspots so far)

standard 1 room game:
locked - (was fun)

only game, with more rooms:
science - (havent spend enough time, to say much about this)

dont like:
illusion - (no reactions on player inputs or hotspots without descriptions, bad graphic)

thanks to all developers, was a lot of fun to sneak throw this games. ;D

some really nice games!

i especially liked Tomb of the Moon and Heart of Abraxas. my vote will probably go for one of those.

the brooklyn one was also nice (love the graphics), but i struggled a bit with the gameplay. i think the room was too big for my slow pc.
and in Science, the game crashed during an explotion (

The worst game?  Most certainly Spacemaze, it was unoriginal, boring and short.  I didn't even mention how easy it was.

Best Game?  Locked in, by far the funniest game.  "He tipped out the gunpowder and then ate the leater bag (he was hungry)." Comedy gold.

Last competition, some people were worried about giving critiques before the voting finished because they might influence the vote.  But as one of the contestants from last time, I remember how impatient I was for comments.  So, I've decided to write comments for each of the games in spoiler tags.  Only read these if you've voted.

I haven't finished some of the games.  I'll update this if I finish them and find something that needs to be commented on.

24 Hours:
Spoiler
This game was really fun and original.  I think I died three times before solving it, so it wasn't too difficult.  And since it only takes five minutes for a playthrough, it's a very enjoyable experience.  The graphics were appropriate and colorful.  My one complaint was that the meters on the upper left were a little hard to read.  Overall, a great job!  Unique, fun, and well scripted!
[close]

Bad Luck:
Spoiler
(I didn't finish this game: Got stuck) Bad Luck isn't anything new or interesting.  From what I saw (I got stuck a short ways in) it's just your standard stuck in a room, use the inventory in sometimes-illogical ways to escape game.  However, the game was fairly well made with decent animations, music, and graphics.
[close]

Blackmail in Brooklyn:
Spoiler
Gee, I wonder who made this...  Excellent graphics and a fun and original use of the AGS engine.  The gameplay needs some tweaking.  I found the punching to be a little random.  It was just wait for the guy to get close then hold down the button and hope that you hit him first... Kicking seemed to be to slow to be useful, and the range of the special move made it pretty weak. It would be nice if there were some powerups to gain back life along the way.  I'm really just nitpicking a fun little game.  Nice job!
[close]

Heart of Abraxas:
Spoiler
(I didn't finish this game: I got stuck and then a bug made me quit) I also am quite sure I know who made this.  Nice use of the panorama module.  The game is interesting but frustrating.  And why can't I save?  The graphics are neat though.  I like the sketchy style.  The atmosphere is also well crafted with a nice boost by Nik's music.  But I wish that the puzzles were less "use everything on everything else and hope that it works" and WAY less pixel-huntish.  Also, I somehow triggered a bug.  I was trying to figure out what to do with some objects in my inventory and suddenly my inventory was full of things that I had never picked up and things that I thought I had lost (the shoe).  I'm not sure what caused it, but I had to quit.  Too bad I didn't have a save to revert to.  Again, please let the player save their game...
[close]

Illusions 1:
Spoiler
(I didn't finish this game: Too frustrating) The game is nearly unplayable.  It's not anything new or original: Stuck in a creepy house.  The puzzles are quite frustrating thanks to your hard to find hotspots and impossible to use cursors.  Please, PLEASE put a dot or a crosshair on those cursors so that I know where exactly it is that I'm pointing at.  Also, the inventory is next to unusable thanks to the way all the items pile on top of each other.  Lots of bugs for such a short game.  I hope these comments don't discourage the game maker, but help him get some ideas to improve his upcoming game.
[close]

Locked:
Spoiler
Again, an escape from the room game.  Logical, and easy puzzles.  Pretty short.  Bizarre text.  Not a lot more to say.  I found it mildly funny and mildly enjoyable for the short time it took to beat.
[close]

Science!:
Spoiler
I quite enjoyed Science.  Excellent writing.  Puzzles that are logical in their own special way...
edit: Doh!  I get it! Great ending!
[close]

Spacemaze:
Spoiler
Adding keyboard control and upping the movement speed would go a long way towards improving this game.  There's no reason for all those other cursor modes, so get rid of those.  Using the "Walk to" function allows you to click quite a distance into the maze and the AGS pathfinding algorithm will find it's own way through.  Not that the maze was very difficult to begin with.  If you made it keyboard controlled and added a bunch more levels with some interesting puzzles (warp tiles, enemies to dodge, some simple puzzles) you could have a fun little game on your hands.  Oh, and you might want to use "You won!" instead of "You are win!"...  Just a tip.
[close]

The Tomb of the Moon:
Spoiler
Yay!  Well done.  Cute graphics.  A slick, usable, and fun user interface.  Logical puzzles.  A well programmed slider puzzle.  I loved that you could get information about something just by pointing at it, more information by right clicking, and EVEN MORE information for some things by using the notebook.  In short, I would love to see this expanded into a larger game.  Nice job.
[close]

EDIT To Scotch:

When we're voting, does "Not Played" count as "Not Applicable."  For some of these games, one or more of these scores does not apply.  For example, SpaceMaze and Brooklyn have no puzzles (though I suppose we could interpret "Puzzles" as "Gameplay") and SpaceMaze has no Writing.  I would hate for these games to be rated as the sum/average of these five categories when the categories apply to each game in different capacities.

Oh and about N/A votes... I say, just pick 1, since we're trying to decide which wins in each category, and that's the closest to "doesn't deserve any points here".

Hooray for everyone! I haven't beaten Science! or Illusions 1 yet but NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE:

Tomb of the Moon winning best scripting just shows that people can't really guess what goes into a game scripting wise when Blackmail was a 2d side scroller action game... Must find a way to correct that.

Still, hooray!

the reason i didn't score blackmail higher for scripting was because i wasn't sure if it was already based on the Platformerius script or not, if it wasn't and i had known i would definitely have given more points.

The source for Platformerious was released a long time ago, in fact that's all that was released.

Also, I agree with Boyd, not that the awards should really matter that much but next time state in the readme what you did that is original, maybe?

My "hat's off" to all the participants who managed to complete and submit their projects on time. And a big congrats to the well-deserved winners!

I thought all of the games had some interesting features about them, though some games seemed they had more time, effort and "polish" put into it than others. That being said, I know from personal experience that it's a bit hard to made a decent and presentable project within a tight deadline, so even if a game wasn't like "Wow, Great, Fantastic!" type of quality, my respect still goes out to all who participate and meet the deadlines in such events.Ã,  Anyways, it's a good learning experience for the participants, and fun to be had by all by enjoying some new games to play.Ã,  ;D

I think my favorite two was "Tomb of the Moon" (wow, great puzzles, music and eye-catching graphics.. sort of felt like playing a "cartoony Indiana Jones" type of game), and "Heart of Abraxas" (I loved the atmosphere and gloomy feel of the game, the occasional "creepy sound effects" put a chill up the spine, and the panoramic effect was great!Ã,  The puzzles needed more polish though, but still, a good effort. I already guessed that Esper had made this game even before the creator's names were announced, as playing his other game before had a somewhat similar "feel" to it. ;)

Most of the other games still showed a lot of promise and potential, and I think if more time, effort and polish was put into these projects, that each game could be very entertaining and fun to play indeed. Keep up the good work guys.Ã,  Ã, I look forwards to more future "OROW" events, and hopefully next one I'll have the time to more commit to completeing a project within the deadline.

Yes, I scripted the whole thing myself.  I think that if I had used someone else's work I would have posted it in the readme or game (like anyone reasonable does), so I think the logical conclusion would've been that I did do the work, but whatever ;).  Glad some people liked it anyway, since I even recorded most of the samples myself ;o.  ROCK N' ROLL!

A collective thanks from me and Pablo to all who voted. I did not enter this competition to win, but just for the sake of entering. And I had a good time making the game. Glad so many liked it. Without Pablo's graphics it probably wouldn't have been worth anything. :)

We shall be giving autographs in my closet tomorrow at noon GMT, in case anybody can find my closet.

And on my own behalf, I'm glad to see so many entires turning up, even it was less than last time. There were many games of different styles, and I enjoyed playing them all. A few locked-in-somewhere-and-must-get-out style - which seems to be the most usual one room theme - gained followers, but they all were different in that type. Many great tricks used this round. A couple of the games could have used a bit more polishing, but still I managed to finish every game, so all is well.

Great job, everybody. Congrats to the winners, and special gratz to Tomb of the Moon. I knew I wasn't going to win, but I didn't think anyone would actually like "Heart of Abraxas" as much as it seems a few of you did. I know I simply cannot make good animations, and due to time constraints there were a couple bugs (the boy's face in the mirror when the room was dark was only supposed to appear when it was in "the corner of your eye," and then only play through once every 20 or so seconds, for example)... I was just wondering: for those of you who played and enjoyed it, would any of you be willing to help me "polish it up" a bit?

The reason i didn't vote for brooklyn on scripting was because the enemies keep running away and the keys are unresponsive, the tomb game had good puzzle scripting. And the collision detection were a bit subtle from the enemy side, it's so darn hard  ;D

It's one thing scripting a platformer, but another thing doing it good  ;D

No offence ProgZ, your graphics still rock.

I voted highly for Brooklyn for most categories, I thought the scripting was fine.  Had a few problems with keys not being very reactive, but in general is was great, the only thing that held me back was Windows StickyKeys on shift, but that's probably not ProgZ's fault :P

Here are my thoughts:

24 hours:
Very original, nice graphics, simple plot.Ã,  I liked the idea of the three meters,Ã,  I once thought of doing something like that with one of my old (unfinished) games.Ã,  The puzzles were quite easy, and really fun.Ã,  Great game, it's one of my favorites in this competition.

Blackmail in Brooklyn:
Great art, very original for a game made with AGS.Ã,  I really enjoyed Blackmail in Brooklyn, too bad it was kinda slow on my pc.Ã,  In the end, it was fun, sometimes challenging, this game shows you the different things you can do with AGS.

Heart of Abraxas:
I like the style of the game, it had a great atmosphere. The art, the color and the music had a great impact with the mood, which made this game kinda scary at times.Ã,  The story and ending were great.Ã,  Really nice game.

Illusions 1:Ã,
This game wasn't that special.Ã,  It was kinda hard to interact with the surroundings of the game(it was hard to find the hotspots).Ã,  As I played, I saw a few bugs (for example, the quit button on the title screen didn't work).Ã,  To me, the ending didn't seem to make any sense. Overall, this could have been better.

Locked:Ã,
Nothing much to say about this game.Ã,  It was very funny at times,Ã,  the art was okay.Ã,  It's a short game, but I liked it very much.

Science!:Ã,  Ã,
The graphics were nice and it had a simple plot.Ã,  Again, I don't have much to say,Ã,  it was very funny, the ending was really original.Ã,  Overall,Ã,  I loved this game, even though it wasn't exactly in one room.Ã,  Ã,

Spacemaze:
It wasn't too bad.Ã,  It was a little too easy,Ã,  but at least it was something.

Tomb of the Moon:Ã,
Very nice game. The graphics were great, the story was original, the puzzles were well made and they weren't too hard. I can clearly see why this game won!Ã,
Ishmael and Pablo did a great job.

BTW: The games are going to be hosted for how long?

Well done to everyone!  I really enjoyed playing them and I wish I could have taken part.  I was really happy to see so many different uses of the AGS engine.

My personal favorite of the bunch was probably 24 Hours.  It wasn't the best in any individual category (For me: Graphics=Brooklyn, Writing=Science!, Scripting=Brooklyn, Puzzles=TotM, Music=Brooklyn), but it did them all well.  Consequently, I had the best all-around gaming experience with 24 Hours.

Well done, AJA!

The unresponsiveness was due to me handling everything with custom functions and rawdrawing everything.  I didn't have time to tweak all the delays so they were left at default.  As for the enemies running I made separate ai categories (coward, dumb, average, smart) and had it randomly assign them to the enemies.  That is why they vary in behavior (which I thought was a good thing, personally).

Does your computer crash when you try to post your game on the AGS games page, or is it something else...?

When I hit the upload button on AGS uploads, the whole computer freezes, and the only thing that stops is holding down my power key. I can't find any other server to accomodate an 18 MB zip file except filefront, which makes the downloader go through a whole rigamarole to get the file.

 ??? That's odd.Ã,  I didn't have any trouble uploading my game.Ã,

18 MB, is that maximum compression?Ã,  Maybe your computer can't handle larger files(I doubt that since 18MB isn't really "big" for today's computers).

:-\ If nothing works, you might have to upload the file from another PC.

Well, that was a pain... I finally uploaded it from my workstation at work. Congrats to Nik for having his first game listed on his profile!

The only problem with SaveFile is it deletes files after 14 days of inactivity.
