Title: One Room, One Week Competition - WINNER: AUTOMATION BY MR COLOSSAL
Post by: AGA on Tue 05/04/2005 03:01:48
Most ATC teams fail, for one reason or another. Two months is a long time to hold a hastily assembled team together and a 20+ room game is always a lot of work. Many people have expressed an interest in something smaller scale, so we've decided to run a one room game competition that will last just one week. Hopefully the limited scope will allow more entries to be finished. We'd like as wide participation in this as possible, so the rules are intentionally lax.

Rules are as follows:

Entries must -
   have just one playable room/location.
   be adventure games.

They may -
use content from any source, including pre-made.
have cut scenes, menus or limited controlled sequences outside the main room.

You should work alone, but if you need help with an area of the game (art, music...) you can find one other person to work with.

Some examples of "one room games" that would be allowed are 6 Day Assassin (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=11) and  Little Jonny Evil (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=24).

Entries will be submitted anonymously. When a game is completed, its creator must contact me by PM with a download link (or to organise some other way of my receiving the game files). I will then temporarily host the game on my own site, and announce the game's release on the forums. This is to guarantee each game is voted on due to its own merit, not simply because of the names attached. Because of this, game entries can not include the game creator's name or company name anywhere. All names will be disclosed once voting has ended.

The winner will be decided by public vote once the competition ends. There will be 5 categories: graphics, music/sound, scripting, writing/concept, puzzles. Each category will be scored out of 5. Voters will be expected to have played, and to vote on, at least half of all games entered. However, of course, playing them all is preferable.

The competition will start in 2 days' time [Thursday April 7 2005], to give people a chance to read this announcement. You should not start making your game until then. Even if you think you have no chance of winning, you're encouraged to enter - it's as much a forum activity as a contest.

Absolutely no information about your game should be shared with anyone until the competition and voting has ended. Please reply to this post if you intend to take part, but don't give any idea of what your game will be about.

Note: I did not come up with the idea for this contest, I simply volunteered to act as its public representative.

ADDITIONAL CLARIFICATION:

By a room, we mean one crm file (to do with what you see fit). If you want to use other rooms for effects such as time passing, changes in the style of the room, minigames such as the sniper mode in 6DA etc, that's fine.

Just be creative, think small, and confine it to one physical, walkable-aroundable room/location.

Voting is now open here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/aga/vote.php). You will need to be registered and signed in at these forums to vote. Obviously you can only vote once. It is hoped that you will have played, and will vote for, all the games. If you're completely stuck in one of the entries, there is a walkthrough pack available here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/aga/OROWCwalks.zip). Voting will last until around the middle of next week.

The rules say you can re-use art from anywhere. However, I doubt people would vote favourably towards an almost-unchanged re-release of an older game...

QuoteDoesn't this have more in common with MAGS than ATC?

That's probably a good thing. Actually, if/when there is another ATC, I think it would be much more popular if it was presented as an 'extended' mags, rather than yet another ATC, which - at least for the moment - might hold some less happy memories for some...

Anyway, not sure if this is the right place to say it, but if someone is looking for a musician, I'll be more than happy to lend my services...

Just one question (maybe a silly question in some people's eyes):
Would it be ok to divide the one room into two different screens, so that you're able to have all four wall visible at some point in the game?
Like this:
the nummers represent the different walls in the room...

Just my five million cents

Hey, count me in too (as long as I get the time, that is).

Is our one room allowed to be a scrolling room? Not sure if I'll even do that, but just thought it was a worth while question to ask. Don't shoot me.

Also, as we're allowed to have one person helping us, would we be allowed to essentially 'team-up' with another person, without anyone else knowing, to make our game?

Oh wait, I just re-read the first post. Dang.

Still, could one person do all the art and music, and the other do story and scripting, for example?

Post by: on Tue 05/04/2005 13:55:53
When you say one room... what exactly do you mean?

Are we limited to the AGS definition of a room? Or do you mean a room in the sense of a physical place, which technically could use several rooms as defined by the engine to show changes to the environment as the player acts on it while still maintaining a static viewpoint over one area?

I'm pretty sure that they mean just one literal room, but that the game may include other 'rooms' that you can use for cutscenes, sending NPCs and the like. At least, that is what the original post suggests to me.

One room.crm file to serve as your '1 room'. Other room files may be used for such things as complex GUIs, but the game should take place in 1 walkable, interactable room, as in 6 Day Assassin and Little Jonny Evil. Long, scrolling rooms are of course acceptable.

But AGA, could we not use extra room.crm files, but as one 'room'?

As an example: You're in a room, and accidentally let off a hand grenade.

In the crude example above, it would be much easier to draw a brand new background for the room, as well as creating new hotspots for, say, holes in the walls and fallen debris.

To the player, it would just be one room, but to the engine and designer, it would be two.

Would this be allowed?
Title: Re: One Room, One Week Competition

That would be acceptable yes, it's still the same physical room after all, just in a different state.

Would it be allowable to do something similar with time instead of handgrenades? You know, the same room, but at two different times of day?

I think we've established that we can use different rooms within the editor, as long as it seems to the player that they only see one actual room/place

One crm file (to do with what you see fit). If you want to use other rooms for effects such as time passing, changes in the style of the room, minigames such as the sniper mode in 6DA etc, that's fine.

Just be creative, think small, and confine it to one physical, walkable-aroundable room/location.

The idea of the competition is to get people to make games. In a way it's especially aimed towards people who haven't made any games yet, because what better way is there to start making games than by starting small?

So then, just make your games already. The "one room only" idea is mostly there to make you think small, which means more chance for success.

Right?

Trouble with starting small is its easy to think of loads of ways to make it much bigger. And then become overwhelmed.

No more questions please, if you think it's not completely against the spirit of the rules then it is ok. Ã, One room is not to be taken as a technical AGS limitation, an attic with boxes you can look inside is fine, a yacht that gives you a cutaway view when you walk inside is fine, an arcade where you can play pong full screen is fine, it's all fine!

I just finished and released my first game (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?category=0&action=detail&id=534&refresh1112558440), and I was thinking small all the way. I guess you could use it as an example, although other games like 6DA are better, IMO.

It only used one room, but was still packed with a lot of features. Well, quite a few, anyway.

I think it's important that you only use extra rooms as discussed here if they are absolutely neccessary. Otherwise they'll just come across as fads.

I'm not trying to put people off using their ideas, but I don't think people should be encouraged into using extra .crm files because of what they've read here, either.

I'd like to enter this, but when it comes to scripting, i have no idea what i'm doing.  I tried a small amount of scripting and was totally lost.  I've done test games with one room (w/o scripting) so it wouldn't be a problem, but everything else i couldn't do.

Oh well...... I guess i will just keep imagining the grand adventure i want to do in my head.

Agreed. I think my main problem is that I've realized a lot of my earlier stuff is really second-rate. I've hit with an intense desire to only produce proffesional games lately, and if I feel I'm not reaching that standard, it just brings me down and I give up.....

Probably time to get over it and start work again though....

I dig this idea... I'll think about what I can do with one room today and get back to you on whether I'll be in or not. I think this is a good chance to really make something out of one room.... and to learn to get used to AGS 2.7.

You should call this the 7 day assasin contest, since it resembles eric's game so much :P

Also, I could always submit an abridged version of paranormal warrior within.. ;) j/k

(The reason its finished so soon is the fact that i had set the last two days aside for coursework but lost the work... admittedly im screwed... but i made a game!)

Bad luck to those who have had to pull out of the competition and SSH i hope you can find a new job soon.

To the rest of you good luck!

And don't expect a quality game... its only been three days, im going to keep polishing untill the deadline (how about up/down walkcycles) but it IS a game all the same

Mines in (since yesterday because i was expecting anew computor today... cant wait for a gig an a bit ram... i need that to live!)

No sound though (was trying to add footsteps when the player moved but gave up, maybe a later release) And certainly no music.

Well hope u can all get your games in on time, good luck, its a great competition.

I'm still working hard on my project too... Using every minute I can to get this done on time.  It's gonna be really "rough" in spots, but overall I think it's going to turn out to be a pretty cool little adventure... It might even be the beginning of some bigger project I can work on in the future.

Best of luck to all other contestants.

Okay, time's up.

There were 10 entries submitted in time.

Games will be available to the public, and voting will begin, as soon and I iron out a minor technical difficulty. Watch this space.

What do you mean "Time's Up"??!!!
Before you postedÃ,  "Yeah, if you haven't started yet, you can doso now. You've got until midnight GMT on Friday the 15th (1 minute after 23:59 on the Thursday, in case you're not very clever"

And according to my calculations as of this post right now (and using the following website: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/Ã,  , and the "Meeting Planner there" http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meeting.htmlÃ,  , I'm in Hong-Kong)Ã,  I was comparing ), I still thought I still had almost another day left to work on this... Did I caculate the time wrong ?!!

Please, can someone confirm? Did I screw up on this whole "GMT on Friday Midnight" calculation thing? Or did I still have a little time to submit my game?

*Grrrrrr!*Ã,  I worked really hard on this project! I'd hate not to be able to submit it now because of some misunderstanding of the time-caculation, especially if I'm right and it's not even past the set time-limit yet?!Ã,  Can someone confirm ASAP? Thanks!

** I guess I misunderstood something or screwed up the time-zone calculation thingy or perhaps accidentially entered in the wrong times zones or something? **  :'(   No way I can still submit my entry for the contest?   Oh well, if not, I guess I'll release it myself... Try and let me know, thanks.

I know that HK is +13 from I live (long story), and I live -6 GMT.

Therefore, 13 - 6 = +7 from GMT, that means that the game was due for you on Friday, April 15 at 7:00 AM. And check this out, because I am right: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meetingtime.html?month=4&day=15&year=2005&p1=102&p2=136&p3=-1&p4=-1

I'm sure AGA can make an exception just for you. After all, it's just the first contest we hold, and the number of entries was pretty good! Just promise to stop working on the game.

Edit: he is.

Thank You! Thank you!Ã,  Yes, I misread or mis-entered something in those "Time Zones", I really thought I had like about another half-a-day or more left to work on thisÃ,  :PÃ,

Okay, I'm gonna work really hard to wrap-up my little project within about 2 hours of this post... Thank you AGA (and everyone else) for your kind understanding and patience in this matter!Ã,  ;D

*Update: *Whew* Okay, had to really "rush" things at the end there.. Hopfully I didn't overlook any big "bugs", and the game is a bit "rough" in parts, but, yes, I got it finished and submitted the link to AGA via a Private Message.  Hope people will enjoy it when they play it.  ;)

Thanks again for giving me that little bit of extra time I needed.

What exactly is this "minor technical difficulty"?
Eleven people just spent the last week slaving over hot computers, only to hit the anticlimax of not actually releasing a game immediately.
Some kind of timeframe would be nice!
Cheers!

Some very nice games here. "The Criminalist" could do with a little more polish however. It seems like a first game, but even so, the limited storyline is... odd.

SPOILERS FOLLOW:

I mean, you are a "criminalist"? I assume this is a way of saying detective... and you go to a home to investigate a murder. Unfortunately you aren't very good at your job it would seem. No batteries for your camera? Stealing from the victim's home for no good reason? Not wanting to know what happened to the murder victim? And why did the door end up locked?

Damn, i tried 4 of these games and the level of quality just boggles my mind.  They look so professional!!! I am so friggin jealous.  I can see that alot of time was spent on working on a one room game, i just wonder what some of these people could do with a full length adventure.

I have great computer skills and am a decent artist, but i couldn't ever pull this kind of quality out within a one week time limit.

Great Job People.  I applaud you for your efforts.  ;D

try playing it in full-screen mode. worked for me.

edit: er, not full-screen. play it in 320x200, not 640x400. the agi plugin can't handle that resolution.

I've managed to play The Lion's Den in full-screen and windowed...

EDIT: yes, the AGI plugin doesn't support 640x resolution. It can only be run at 320x, which is the default in the game, I think.

Right, voting is now open here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/aga/vote.php).

I'm very impressed, I must say.

Eleven quality games, all in one week.

Congrats on organising this comp. It really works.

EDIT: Just one thing. For the voting I'm assuming 5 is five points (best), and 1 is one point (worst). Right?

But I'm not going to vote until this is made clear.

Edit: assuming we must b able to, as there is only four of us that havent I've voted. I left quite a few of the musics didnt play as my speakers have been buggering up lately. And i still wasnt able to run in the lions den as apparently loop 0 of daniels sumat or otehr was missing. Hope thats all ok. Try just voting all 3s for music then. If enough people vote, the votes of 1 person won't make a huge difference.

And yeah, vote for your own game, just vote as honestly as you can. I doubt anyone honestly thinks their game is worth all 5s...

The competition doesn't draw to a close until I decide enough people have voted, so everyone vote! ;)

When I voted, I just left my own game as "unplayed".
That way you can't push your score up by being too optimistic and you can't drag your score down by being too critical.

So, AGA, what is the magic number of votes you're looking for, and how close are we?

I'm really suprised that so many were able to accomplish this.  Perhaps the next ATC should be called, "The 10, 1 room 8, 1 week competition" Maybe then more of us would have finished :)

I think maybe he means "The ten (one) room eight (one) week competition". Read it without the parentheses or with the parentheses and not the word immediately before, as it is customary to read sentences of this structure.

And I disagree, smiley or no smiley.

Maybe Darth's 1:s are meant to be read out as exlamation marks? I dunno.

This was indeed a great concept for a competition, although I would regard it more as an activity than a competition - the fact that many people have used far more than a week to create material for their games makes it a bit unfair. But hey, it's only for fun anyway :)

The outcome is impressive, nevertheless. Especially Automation swept me off the floor - it's the perfect shortgame in my opinion.
Good work, anonymous creators!

Caverns by Helm
Space Quest: Planet of the Incredible Menace by Pesty
Saturday School by netmonkey
Criminalist by _RyRayer_

Congrats Mr. C!  It was a well deserved win.  All the entries were worth playing, but your game was just one step ahead of the rest!  Excellent.

As for my 10 1 week bit ... I was attempting to make a joke.  Apparently it didn't work.

It seemed funny to me that so many entries were submitted for a competition that had FAR less time to complete!

Anyway ... congrats again to Mr. Colossal.

but I actually found it by editting the voting url before I found it in the thread

I also tried the search function using the games names but it just lead me back to this thread

maybe making it bold or adding it to the first post would make it easier to find, just a bit of friendly advise to help people who missed it enjoy the games.

Sorry I missed it and am too late to vote, and cause i had to read the whole thread now I know who made what, but oh well, my own fault for not being very active around here these days

Loved your game, Mr. C! I especially liked how much exra animation you did (moving the cannisters, etc.) and your incorporation of the kick command (good for a few interactions).

I did find a bug when I was playing however... If you get a chance, you might want to fix it.

If you don't kick the drain away to open the downstairs door with the broom (it's easy to miss) and operate the magnet instead, the game crashes with an error message about a missing view.

MrColossal, your game ruled. All the other entries were great too, a wonderful competition. Big thanks AGA! Are you going to release the actual results just so we can see where we could pick things up? I plan on realeasing a real version within the next mont (im expecting a new computor any day now, then this one will be moved along with all the files into another room, and then we have to get wireless LAN before its reconected to the internet)

We could all guess who made Automation, i also found a bug however
Spoiler
after you get the robot back in the canister i think i must have tried picking up the vacume tube again or something, but the view reverted back to the normal view and it refused to let me use the door back into the lab and didnt run the end sequence. I ended up restarting and doing it all again

Oh yeah, also, could those of you who made an OROWC entry please find alternative hosting for their game? I want to be able to eventually remove the OROWC download pack from my site... Thanks.

I enjoyed all the games, and I think Mr Colossal's win was well deserved, but they were all a lot of fun. I was really impressed with the quality of games made in only a week. Let's see some more!

Sure, I'd be interested to know the vote results too.  And I don't mind if the vote results go public.

Oh, and Chicky: I thought your game was rather "cute"Ã,  ;)
The music was catchy, it brought me back to the days of youth "Oh won't you take me to... Funky town." right? Hehehe. Though I found your game was a bit unclear of what to do/interact with, and after a while, I needed to refer to the walkthrough for hintsÃ,  :PÃ,  And, it was also a bit hard to walk around the light.
Still, a good job overall.

You better stop eating fish and get started, then, Pelican. ;)

Barbarian, the whole light/puzle thing was effected by the bug that i found.

It wasnt much of a bug, but at 11:40 the night before the comp ended i accidently deleted one of my hotspots (the one which wouldnt let you interact with things beyond the light) and as far as i know, the only way to fix things like this is to remake all the hotspots. So that's what i had to do, and i forgot to add the interaction one back in, which completely fucked the puzzles.

But rules are rules, and it had passed the 00:00 when i realised what had happened so i wasnt allowed to enter the updated version.

but yeah, congrats to Eric :) My personal fav. was 'caverns'.

Chicky: Bummer about you having the game already submitted with the "bugs", do you think you will soon upload a bug-free version for us to try?
I would like to give your game another go.

I would also love to see the "flash intro" you mentioned too.  Really, from what I could hear, see and play of your game, I thought it was really neat and funny. Your game has some good potential, so I'd like to see you do an "extended version" of it.  ;D    Keep up with your good game-makin' skillz!
Best wishes.
