Title: Release Something! - NOW
Post by: Kinoko on Sun 12/11/2006 05:02:48
Time for another one perhaps!

ABOUT RELEASE SOMETHING:
This isn't a competition as such, just a big free-for-all where we can all showcase our talents. Basically, a date is set for "Release Something!" Day and on that day, people are invited to post to this thread anything they like, really. For example, some sprites,Ã,  screenshots of your game, music, sound effects, backgrounds, rooms, a plugin, a storyboard, a demo, or if you can manage it, a full game. Heck, even if it's 95% done or 1% done, if you wanna release it, you go for it!

WHEN:
It's starting on November 25th (that is, NOW) and usually runs for a couple of days to accomodate for different timezones and people actually having lives.

Remember, anything you want, as little or as much of it as you want! Get working, people!

And now, a very rough music track. When the track is done, it will be posted on the Critics Lounge for improvement.

I would've posted the new site, but it's not finished yet!

Walter's Wild Years (working title)

[Fiction]This is the game that little Max Reinhardt made from magazine cutouts for his cardboard box arcade machine in 1992. His friends hated it.[/Fiction]

Walter, and his Shadow Self, arrive at a strange house after receiving an invitation from a woman he has never met before only to discover that he has apparently been to this house many times over the years. Walter decides the best course of action is travel to the past and the future and all the places in between in order to figure out just what his place is in all this madness.

This is basically an experiment to see if I can get a short game done in a short amount of time. I'm no artist, but I think I've managed to come up with a style that at least looks interesting. I've gone for a cut-out style for the animations. I'm also no programmer so, although this is a sort of arcade/adventure, it's turning out to be mostly an interactive story I suppose.

STUFF!
Collect raw time to achieve time travel!
Meet interesting new people!
Old ones too!
Learn the history of the house and it's inhabitants!
Learn about yourself!
Walter, that is!
Jump!
Also, Bash!

Game is about 50% complete, maybe a bit less.

Also, here's a screen from my other [larger] game project:

mordalles: Awesome painting there. Looks to be great.

Mac: Magnificent style you have there. I'm very much looking forward to playing that.

Penguin: I'm really bummed that we won't be seeing more of that game :(. Give it another chance, please.

SURFACE BLAST
_________________________________________________________

Surface Blast is an old-school, side-scrolling shooter. I have put two or three complete days of work in the summer of 2006 into the project. Its game-play consists of pushing the trigger button, picking up power-ups and enjoying the graphics for now. Speaking of the artwork: most sprites are taken from the Metal Slug games, simply copied, adapted, taken apart and put together differently.
For the technically interested, it's written in C++ using SDL. The game uses parallax-mapping for the backgrounds, which basically means that those bigger, yellow houses that you can see in two of the screen-shots move by faster than the white-grayish houses even further in the background, while the grass in the foreground moves by really fast and gives you more of a three-dimensional illusion, while actually staying two-dimensional. The rest is all pretty much standard, although I personally also like the bullet-shells that come out of the end of your machine gun and then fall back depending on your current movement, physically at least half-way correct.
Anyways, enough talk. Here are three screen-shots showcasing the same level, enemies, a little bit of the GUI and the player with bullets and shells of course:

Empty shells falling through the air (notice that the shots went through enemies back when the screen-shot was taken)...

Another scene from the same level...

This is the most current image showing the new GUI (notice that the blue bar in the left-lower corner is gone and replaced
with a health-bar right over the player's plane and that enemies take damage now and flash orange for a millisecond when hit)...

I don't know yet whether I'll finish Surface Blast or not (and when).

Have you been itching to beat up some street punks in Drug Bust?  Well now you can in this simple technical demo that shows some of the mechanics of hand to hand combat in Drug Bust.  Hit the street punks where it hurts!  Dizzy opponents with a flurry of uppercuts and then finish them off with a one-liner that would make Clint Eastwood proud.

Okay, Nikolas convinced us to post something up for this. Didn't want to put up any new screenshots cos we want to save some locations for when you play the game. But I thought I've not put any anims up yet, so here's this:

Mmm, great thread!! Jan - Surface Blast looks awesome!! Grundy - love the BJ6 screenshot! *fart sound* Mordalles, your concept is awesome! Mac, nice style! Mr Buckethead, familiar terriroty ;) Looking good!! Fentonfilms - looks epic, I like it! sheail - wow!! Awesome may lay in that game :D CaptainBinky - lush! ;)

I have a few minor things to release!

Firstly, a video with Charles Cecil speaking at ECTS 2002. Fairly short clip of him discussing crap puzzles in adventure games, or crap design going into adventure game puzzles - and Marek from Adventure Gamers gives him some interesting statistics! (relevant to 2002, of course :P)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cHgfh6nSsk

Secondly, a FoY sketch, from the intro of the game - which is progressing positively :D Miez has worked his wonder to create this room which you will see in a complete form in the game!

And don't forget - on Warner Brother's behalf - you can win a poster for the movie The Fountain (directed by Darren Aronofsky) over at our website; http://www.miez.nl/yabbse/index.php?topic=918.0

Or visit the Fountain website at http://thefountainmovie.warnerbros.com/

Okay, I didn't release that but they did just a few days ago!!

I have a couple of music tracks too, which I made for anyone to use in their games, or what have you :)

"Lost Eden" - http://www.screen7.co.uk/junc/music1.mp3
"Dr Duh" - http://www.screen7.co.uk/junc/music2.mp3

Plus two tunes from Nelly Cootalot that are unlikely to feature in the game game, they were attempts at other tracks but turned out too "depressing".. :P
http://www.screen7.co.uk/junc/derelict.mid
http://www.screen7.co.uk/junc/savethespoonbeaks.mid

And, one track which WILL feature in Nelly Cootalot :)
http://www.screen7.co.uk/junc/dlorblon.mid

That's about it for now :)

Figured I might as well post some screenshots from a platformer I'm making. It's not done in AGS as I don't have that level of programming capability... (well, maybe I'm lazy)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/sergiocornaga/bluemanscreen.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/sergiocornaga/bluemanshot1.gif)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/sergiocornaga/bluemanshot3.gif) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/sergiocornaga/bluemanshot5.gif)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/sergiocornaga/bluemanshot7.gif) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/sergiocornaga/bluemanshot2.gif)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/sergiocornaga/bluemanshot4.gif) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/sergiocornaga/bluemanshot6.gif)

As you can see, it's mostly standard with a few really quite strange locations. Oh, and the one with the purple background isn't quite finished- it's supposed to have ground.

Well, I don't have anything to release this time so I thought I'd just post some silly comment about everyone's stuff.

Vince Twelve:
The game looks really good, I still haven't downloaded it though. I promise that I will try it later and will post some comment in the game's thread.

Sheail:
That art looks wonderful! I love your graphic style. I also like how you've made an interface similiar to the LEC gui but still it has a personal touch to it. Could you maybe share a bit more information about this game? :)

Fentonfilms:
I'm still eagerly waiting for this game. Great new stuff there! Your backgrounds just keep looking better. Keep it up! :D

Grundislav:
I can't really add anything that hasn't been already said. Good stuff as always!

Mordalles:
I like the way you design characters. This one reminds me of Mordy quite a lot. Must be those overly long hands. ;D Anyway, it looks great!

Mac:
Awesome style there, mate! Although some might think it looks flat and perhaps a bit weird because the shading looks the same in every object. But it's very unique! The story cought my interest. I can't wait to see the game! Good luck!
Your other project looks good too, but I somehow prefer the unique style of the first one. :)

Penguin:
It's certainly okay to post unfinished stuff too. Those screenies look so great it makes me sad that you won't finish this one. Is there a specific reason for not completing it? 'Cause if it's just lazyness then get on with it and make the game. :D

Ishmael:
You know how I feel about that project. Pure gold! ;D

Mr. Buckéthead:
For your first game it looks quite nice. I'd suggest you to put some more stuff in that room though, it looks a bit empty. Good luck with it, I hope you'll get it done!

MashPotato:
Just like all your art, it looks wonderful! What else can I say? :P

dkh:
I trust that I can expect quite a nice gaming experience from this game. :) I take it that you've ripped all the background graphics too? If not, then WOW those are amazing!

ProgZmax:
Yay, I beat him! It's quite an innovative fighting system. Good job. And the animations look great, very smooth!

CaptainBinky:
Reeeaaally nice and smooth animation! Well done!

m0ds:
Damn, Miez does such awesome art! And you make such awesome music! Your post is full of awesome. :D

Afflict:
Yup, that avatar is cute. Those eyes... o_o And good looking desktop backgrounds too.

Exsecratus:
I think I already told you this but that picture looks amazing. You make really good concept art. :)

SergioCornaga:
Oooh, when can we expect to get to play this game? It looks nice! And weird. Just the way I like it. Could you perhaps give some more information on what the game is about? :D

FSi:
I guess there's something really weird to be expected from this game, since it's made by you. ;D I tired the demo a bit and it looked good. And it had some good music too. Good luck with it!

Ali:
Looks great! :) Please finish the game soon!

Vel:
Sounds very professional, good job!

LimpingFish:
One should never reject something so beautiful! ;) Now go and work on Heartland 2 (or whatever it will be called)!

Hmm... Now that I read through all that, I think a big "Good job everyone!" would have been enough. Oh well. :P

I definitely agree on this, Penguin, the style is amazing and simple, it looks beautiful. What will it take for you to keep working on it?

I was making a crappy platformer for MAGS. I didn't finish it in time because I had almost no free time. What I had made so far is here (http://www.geocities.com/myrrwyn/Gourmand_Demo.zip). It's called The Eternal Gourmand. It has bugs in it.

If anyone actually likes this, I'll finish it anyway and release it properly.

Thanks for the interest :3.
Reasons for not continuing on it are.. time .. and laziness, and the fact that I hadn't planned it properly to begin with which means that I'm a bit stuck with what to make of it. Might start over with the same graphics, not too sure about that though.

As this is release "something" I am going to post unfinished work... Hope nobody complains.

This might be in a game, but, as I said that many times before and no game has finally been released, I will just tell that this is an image I' ve been working on lately...

I am not sure of the parts of the sub, so, some rooms could be missplaced... If someone can help, I'll gladly accept his/her PM and put him/her in the credits.

I'm gonna add my voice to the other ones saying this:

These are lovely BGs. If by any chance you didn't "waste" too much timemaking them you're 50% there. Move it as slowly as possible. You have another ... whatever time you want to make it happen. We will all be here waiting.

Guys, B, is extremely busy atm so this is the main reason, and nothing else.

I'm sure you'll be able to revive the project once you have a not-so-busy moment in your life. I like those graphics. They have this strange Monkey Islandish feel to them. It must be the similiar coloring, which is very well done. :)

Thanks pablo :) Yes, Monkey Island 2 was reference for me the warmish inside colours with coldish outside. Even though I tried an original style (the drawn world more than the shading) there is a lot of inspiration in there  :D Maybe also one of the reasons, I'd rather work on something with a more unique style that isn't so sierra or lec or anything else that's been done :D.

Yeh, really impressive backgrounds man..... even if you just made a little demo with them, so we can see them as intended.

Lovely backgrounds, I think you should use them, too bad to waste them like that.

Um, very nice, but isn't this a really old thread?  Doesn't it defeat the purpose to just have the same thread be stickied and posted in for 4 months?  If not, carry on.
