Hey everyone, Icey here bring you the best Event of the month (no not E3 but even cooler). I talked it over with Ben and he said I can kick things off this year. :D
(http://www.pictureshoster.com/files/0h84sv0r9cicoxm56x.png)
In 2011 we had 13 pages of stuff released, then in 2012 we had 8 pages. Let's try to shoot for
15 this year!
What can you post?
- Post screenshots
- animations
- game demos
- tech demos
- rolling demos
- voice demos
- code modules
- game music
- Anything related to something your working on, or was, or might be, ohhh you get the point ;)
You have until the end of the Month to Release Something.
Change of plans, seeing how to things took off so late. I think the RS should be push onward to the end of next month. But just this time. ;)
Ok, here, I'll start things off. ;)
[imgzoom]http://oi44.tinypic.com/35d3sk1.jpg[/imgzoom]
Oh, goodie gumdrops. This should be fun.
I thought Ben ran these?
QuoteI talked it over with Ben and he said I can kick things off this year
I always wanted to run a Release Something since I first reshot the idea but Ben gave it off better than I thought I could do it. I ask him and he said yeah, hes has been busy and stuff so he gave me the ok. :3
Actually anyone can host the Release Something event, but make sure you ask a mod before starting any new event in this section (inherited events don't count, the winner of a competition automatically has rights to host the next round).
Since you asked Ben for this (though it's not official) and a new round of this event is really due to happen I'll just leave it here.
Ohh ok will do I'll remember that for next time I ever get host. ;)

I'll put together a couple of screenshots of my next game for this thread in a day or two.
I'll bite. Here are some screenshots, an animation, some concept images, and a video draft of a taxi ride from a project that's been put on the backburner while a collaborator does research abroad.

Reality Check - Episode 4
Coming when it's finished, there's no set timetable.
- RC4 features a new custom GUI.
- Will be longer than previous episodes.
- Development is slower than previous games (I broke my brain the last 2 games!).

Here is my contribution to Release Something 2013. I've been working on a black and white detective game on and off for just over a year now so I thought I would show off some screenshots. Those that follow me on twitter may have already seen them ;)

Some lovely stuff here.
Matt. I like how the faces have just a subtle hint of colour in them. nice touch.
I don't have a lot in the way of releasable assets. Most of my game is playable but still using Roger and a mixture of placeholder art and years-old backgrounds from my first attempt at making this game. I almost considered releasing my game here in all it's artless glory, but instead I thought I'd just show off my inventory items, seeing as I have actually drawn most of them now. Also, here's an early draft of what the main character will look like.
Spoiler alert. Seeing these items will pretty much tell you how to solve one of the main puzzles in the game (and it's a bloody good puzzle if I do say so myself).
I'm quite proud of my little thing that tells you what the inventory items actually are. This way I don't have to draw them properly :-D

I just scrolled down to say the same thing. That's lovely, lovely work Matt!
Wolf -- I'm never sure with the RotN stuff, which parts are yours, and which parts are part of the commons?
Stupot -- I like that you don't have to change your color palette going from Roger to your character!
Things are turning out nicely, the stuff I seen so far looks great. I was thinking of doing a vote off for top 3 releases and the winners get get medals. :3
But I think it that would only be possible if there are a few more people.

As I've told you already, I love that motorcycle. 8-) The fact that it is contained within an old school sprite sheet is just a bonus.

Also Matt, that game looks amazing. I love your art style.

Matt, your pixel work is just charming. Top job.
Nice thread, there are some great screenshots here! Releasing stuff is always good, so maybe I should throw in some music. Here's another preview from the Conspirocracy (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=46687.0) Soundtrack:

So I stumbled across an awesome sci-fi graphics pack a while ago on an open source art/music sharing web-site, e-mailed the awesome artist Skorpio, and he gave me the go ahead. Coupled with RPGMaker's sci-fi pack and my own hackey art, I've been slowly working on an action/adventure game that takes up one 10,000 pixel wide scrolling room 8-)
Oh man, this is the topic that always gets me down hard. Worst idea for a topic ever, honest. It's like a slap in my face by some australian dude that likes to shave his head and eat candies. It must be all the wonderful games that have yet to be made and once you compare them with what you have or are about to have, your project(s) pale in comparison.
Joking aside, glad to see this is still a thing.
Well, at least you have something you can call a project, Duals. I have a bunch of useless doodles that are never going to turn into actual games :)
How awesomely EGA, ProgZ, always loved your ability to mimic various display standards and keep it consistent.
Okay, some of the above mentioned useless doodles:
[imgzoom]http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii203/Kastchey/rs2k13_zpscf80d1e0.png[/imgzoom]
Two pictures in the top row are mock-ups of a horror-investigative adventure game, the left one in the middle row is concept art for a loose sci-fi game idea I had, middle right is the Lovecraft adaptation that keeps re-surfacing in my RS entries (took inspiration from Thomas Cole's art for this one), the two on the bottom are actually from a working demo (sort of) - a MAGS I once attempted, but never finished. It's even playable to some degree.
That space shot with the eye planet looks amazing.
Inspired by the Invincible Island Remake (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/561/), I've been hounding the Beginner's Tech forum recently, and mostly for this thing:
Single Button Tech Demo (http://babar.uoou.info/misc/TechDemo.rar)
(Incomplete and probably buggy)
Planning to use it for my game (art and music has been credited to bicilotti), but wanted to make this small thing first to have it complete. Haven't implemented Save and Load yet, or dialogs (which I haven't figured out properly). I'm getting more and more depressed by the seeming impossibility to make a portable modular version of this thing (without a ton of specialised GUIs and variables all over the place) that I can then use for other games as well, so I figured I'd show it off here and hopefully get motivated :D.
Firstly - @MattFrith, that looks absolutely terrific!!
Secondly... well this might be a bit of a cheat in a sense, but since I've already posted tons of screenshots of this game in the GiP thread, here's a screenshot from a sequence that we've ended up cutting from Captain Disaster in Death Has a Million Stomping Boots... sadly, we will have no cameo appearance by Purple Tentacle. (Sorry!)

Some great stuff there. Thousands of loverly pixels! lighthouses and severed heads... only at AGS!
I can really only add Myst-on-acid really:
Lost In Paradise - trying to improve my terrain modelling. Not actually working on the game at the moment, just tinkering with art and resolution. So these are just concepts. What I am doing is looking for a quick, easy, fun way to be able to do it and for me Bryce is still ticking those boxes, it's just about making the end render look acceptable. Cos Bryce still has its limits (or I have my limits within Bryce) so there are plenty of effects and nifty things 3D designers do that I certainly can't.
DazJ is proficient at this sort of thing in Google sketchup and has offered to help. I gave it a try but find the sketchup process a bit tiresome. So I'm tossing up whether to ask for his help or to just try and progress the quality using Bryce.
Cos the only other 'something' to release would amount to a short demo for kinky island, I will aim to do that for your thread icey (the 15th page tho!! ;))
@ Mods
While this isn't the Critics Corner, I'm inclined to say this looks pretty inviting to me. I'd suggest you play in the Material Labs with the scaling on the street texture. For example:
Sure, thanks. But pavements on those islands are gigantic ;) As I said, concepts, took me 30 mins to make :P I did not get round to the materials lab. If you have any tips on how to import a texture, ie a jpeg/bmp one, over an object in Bryce... please let me know! Eg when I import say a plane object, the jpeg material doesn't get attached to it so it's just a solid color. I've not yet found out the steps to give it back its original texture, whereas other programs when you import the object they automatically attach the jpeg texture too. That's my most annoying point about Bryce 3D, that it doesn't automatically keep the texture when you import it.
@Mods
I do understand what you're saying, since I've been trying to move things into and out of Bryce, with textures attached, and I haven't figured it out, either. Not a Bryce expert (not an expert at much of anything), but, for a plane object, I'm wondering what would happen if you brought in a 2D Picture Object, loaded the texture image you wanted on the 2D surface, and then copy/pasted that material on the plane. I've done something similar a few times recently, although not exactly for the same reason.
Your choice of 3D modeling program is melting my eyes. :P
Great stuff guys! Ponch, I'm glad to see you're making a foray into the great white north again!
Anyway, here's my contribution, some concept art for

When chaos threatens to plunge the world into darkness... only one reptile can save the day...
Here's a short proof of concept I worked on last year for a Horror dungeon crawl. I really wanted to see if I could make an Elvira/Eye of the Beholder type engine within AGS. I was happy with the test results but felt that the graphic assets would be a drag to make en masse for full production.
Features
*Two rooms in 3D!!!
*Music and sound effects
*Combat/XP Levelling system
*Infinitely respawning demon that looks like an onion
*Healing potions
*Compass
*Working "quit" button
*Room object
Controls are pretty simple. Click the arrows buttons to move. Left click enemy to attack. Right click potions to use.

Play the alpha right in your browser on our website (http://www.wingsofstnazaire.com)! (You will need to download the free and small unity player plug-in.)
Hit F10 at any point in time to check out the options menu, under controls you can find and rebind the controls! And don't worry, in this alpha build you are currently invincible. But your enemies are not!
This is a space action game in the vein of Wing Commander and X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter that I've been working on and have been for quite some time. It's made with the Unity Engine and will be available on PC, Mac and Linux computers. Consoles are also possible assuming we get enough funding. Kickstarter is an option in the future! It's being developed by two people at the core and then we have a third guy working on the music!
Let me know what you people think and how you liked the playable alpha!
That is the most amazing Unity game I have ever played and the pixel shader is brilliant and the windshield refraction, oh my! 8-0
Very impressive. I've been trying to make a deresolution shader in Unity forever, how do you do it?
Most stunning cockpit I've ever seen in a space game.
Also, I love Pinback's dungeon crawl GUI.
DoorKnobHandle that game is incredibly impressive! Nice job!
Thank you for the comments everybody! :)
Armageddon, we are simply using a scene buffer (ie. a render texture) at 640x400 resolution. Then you can scale that up to whatever the game is actually running at with nearest neighbor as opposed to bi-/linear filtering and voila!
@Adeel. I think that little guy looks cool!
It's so great to see so many different styles in one thread -- from Shane's EGA surfing game to Katschey's mind-blowing "doodles" :) Each of these is fun in its own way, and each brings back a memory of one game or another.
DoorKnobHandle: I've never really gotten into spaceflight simulations, somehow, but this looks just gorgeous, too good to pass up.
Adeel: How's the work on those going? Any new anims that I haven't seen yet?
Amelie: Romantic horse sims is another genre I've never had a chance to play. I'm intrigued?
And here's a little conceptual graphic I cranked out just now, based on a sketch that's been lying around gathering dust since February or so:
This is how I picture the main character of a yet untitled project. In my head I call it "Wimpire" -- an amalgam of "wimp" and "vampire" -- but that's not going to be the title. I want it to be something that google hasn't heard of yet -- because every time I search for "gray" and "fitz", I get a zillion entries for Graham Fitzgerald. And "wimpire" seems to be the term for Twilight-esque fangers -- who are in abundance these days.
Aaaanyway, I have just a few rough pencil sketches -- but this game's been on my mind for quite a while, probably more than two years. Initially, I pictured it lo-res, with graphics similar to Monkey Island 1 -- with my trademark 4 colors, and somewhat serious and dark in tone. Think Gothic novels. Then I got a different idea, something totally wacky -- strangely enough, inspired by actual (and recent) events -- and as I started doodling, with just a basic idea of what the character should look like (scary-goofy, basically), I came up with this. Hi-res and smooth shading seemed like a natural choice -- with the original four-color palette maintained. A lot of thinking will go into the background art style to keep it consistent -- both with other bg's as well as characters. Right now, though, I'm more focussed on inventing puzzles and weaving them into the game mechanics -- including two playable characters. It's going to be a more puzzle-driven game than Gray -- with lesssss dialogue, so that I could make it a full-talkie without losing my vocal cords in the process ;)
DKH, those gifs must be good. My browser keeps breaking :P
Seriously guys, there's some great stuff to look forward to judging by these posts.

Your character looks great. The story have many elements to make it a good one. Looking forward to play and/or helping you in your game. One more thing, I wish to say:
Spoiler
It's good that you have decided to go for high-res this time. Since you have good art talent / skills, therefore the game will look great. I have played one game with high-res, i.e, Barely Floating and liked it very much.
@DoorKnobHandle:
Looking forward to download your game. Screenshots look great.
Thanks Stupot! The gifs are a bit on the heavy side but I hadn't heard from anybody in regards to their browser breaking down!
Adeel, you can play the game already right now, you just need to go to www.wingsofstnazaire.com and download the Unity web player plugin for your browser (it's linked on that page) and then you're good to go. If you don't like playing in your browser, a complete website overhaul is almost ready and when it rolls out, it will also feature old-fashioned download links so you can download the latest alpha build to your computer and play it from there, no problemo!
Considering my Internet Connection's speed: I think I will be happy with "old-fashioned download links". It would be great!
EDIT: Maybe Stupot+ is using Internet Explorer :cheesy:. Just saying.

This was my background for OROW. As you can see, I didn't get very far! I thought it was worth letting it see the light of day. The game was about two bums living together when one died. You had to make a home made defibrillator to save your companion.

Sorry I wasn't able to deliver on the Boyd Quest teaser pic I posted. I've had a lot of jobs going, a bad case of exhaustion, and I just didn't have the energy to do it. The good thing, though, is that I managed to integrate the disparate parts of Boyd Quest together into one functional mash of goo so maybe, at some point in the future, a release may just be possible.
