Title: Release Something (NOW)! - October 30, 2005
Post by: Kinoko on Tue 27/09/2005 01:44:33
It's time for another Release Something! I think. The last one was a success so hopefully we can make this one even better! For everyone looking for some motivation to get their game completed or even write a few more words of dialogue, consider this your chance.

ABOUT RELEASE SOMETHING:
This isn't a competition as such, just a big free-for-all where we can all showcase our talents. Basically, a date is set for "Release Something!" Day and on that day, people are invited to post to this thread anything they like, really. For example, some sprites,Ã,  screenshots of your game, music, sound effects, backgrounds, rooms, a plugin, a storyboard, a demo, or if you can manage it, a full game. Heck, even if it's 95% done or 1% done, if you wanna release it, you go for it!

WHEN:
I set the date for October 30th, just in time for Halloween, I guess (even though I don't celebrate it). This gives us just over a month to work on things which I think is plenty of time without being too far away.

Remember, anything you want, as little or as much of it as you want! Get working, people!

Note: This thread will be locked until October 30th. Then you can go nuts.

Ok, time for me to release something. I'm currently working on an RPG Template which is half finished by now. Therefore I won't release it as a template yet but rather as some kind of game.
So far you can create characters and use magic. It took the last week, 3-4 hours every day, to finish this version and unfortunatly I wasn't able to make an english version yet. So it's just german at the moment, sorry.

Here are some screenshots:

Happy Halloween everyone!
My contribution to the Release Something 2 thread is this: Some news, a storyline and some screenies of rooms and characters of my game, Stewie Quest.

THE GAME
Enter the world of Family Guy, where the Griffins ( Peter, Lois, Brian, Meg, Chris and Stewie ) are a dysfunctional family living in Quahog, Rhode Island.
All is well until, one night, while Stewie, an intellectual baby who is pessimistic in anything and everything, is sleeping, his teddy bear, Rupert, is stolen. Stewie must find and take back Rupert, or he'll lose his best, perhaps only, friend in the world.
The game is basically a replica of topdown games where the player and NPC's are more or less just little circles with green or blue or red inside them.

UPDATE LOG
6th of September, 2005: Began work, made some sprites and stuff.

14th of September, 2005: AGS accidentally wiped off PC.

15th of September, 2005: Download AGS again.

20th of September, 2005: Made a few more sprites.

25th of September, 2005: Started working on the guide, an AGS-operated
helpbook, used rather than a Readme, and involves characters,
hints for levels, basic controls etc.

11th of October, 2005: Started making trailer + made other "ads", involving a Forum Signature and an MSN Display Pic. These items will be part of the final download package.

19th of October, 2005: Finished trailer, put together initial cutscene.

22nd of October, 2005: Gained some team members. 2 more artists, 1 more programmer and 3 people to supply everything they know about Family Guy.

SCREENSHOTS
Here are some screenshots of Stewie Quest.

The game's main menu. I'm not good at main menus, so another artist did it, but i don't like how Stewie looks, i might change that.

This is when Stewie suspects Happy-Go-Lucky Toys stole Rupert as a new toy model.
We're not gonna' say wether or not he was right.

Stewie. The original and the best.

Stewie on the right side. The walking animation DOES actually involve visual feet moving, but i'm not sure how to string together an animation on the forums.

Stewie's 17 year old sister, Meg.

A civilian. This is the civilian before Stewie vaporises him.

Well, that's it, sorry it was such a long threadÃ,  := := :=

It was supposed to be part of a cut-scene where the main characters drive on a road chased by the police :)

But they'll be driving a Pickup truck so this one became obsolete.Ã,  ::)
I used a real car and "traced" it.

I was supposed to have this one project scripted by the end of the month so I could send it to dialog writers and stuff, but real life (tm) didn't really like that idea. Long story short, I had very little inspiration to work on this. And when I actually was eager to work on it again a couple of days ago, something silly happened that prevented me from working on it! Blargh!

So for now, here are a couple of screenshots.

Post by: Vince Twelve on Sun 30/10/2005 09:52:30
These look really good so far!

I have two contributions to this Release Something!

First is the demo for Domestic Conspiracy (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=21508.0), which I announced at the last Release Something.

Download the demo here: domcon.rar -- 3MB (http://games.thexiis.com/files/domcon.rar)

The demo shows off the stylish graphics, the unique inventory system, the very cool menus, and a number of challenging puzzles!  But, it's been stripped of story to prevent spoiling the plot.  So, enjoy!

This project is still being worked on, albeit very slowly.  I'm not a big art guy so it takes me a long time.  Plus, the code for this game is so dirty and difficult to add to and debug because it was my "learn to use AGS" game.  Every once and a while I get a burst of energy and finish a new background (there's a lot not seen in this demo).  I don't know when I will finish this game.

If you have comments on this demo, please leave them in the Domestic Conspiracy thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=21508.0).  If you need hints for the challenging puzzles, PM me or post in the H&Ts board.

Download the demo here: domcon.rar -- 3MB (http://games.thexiis.com/files/domcon.rar)

The second contribution is the alpha version the project that gets all my free time, Dwight of the Living Dead.

DotLD is possibly the first TBABCRPG (Turn-Based Adventure Board Card Role-Playing Game).  I won't go into the plot at all, but basically you play as Dwight and you fight a bunch of Zombies.  Do you really need more?

Download the alpha here: dwight.rar -- less than 1MB (http://games.thexiis.com/files/dwight.rar)

Note: all the graphics present in this alpha should be considered place holders.  I'm currently focused on getting the game engine in place.

DotLD is played out on a randomized board, so each play through will be different than the last.  Dwight uses his deck of Attack, Defend, Item, etc. cards to navigate around the board and do battle with the zombies.

It's been a fun challenge to code so far.  The whole game as you see it here is made using one room, zero objects, a few characters, and two GUIs.  Everything else is done with RawDraw functions!

I had hoped to include the battle system with this alpha, but I didn't get far enough with it to be able to release it, so here, you'll only be trying out the movement system.  Coming into contact with a zombie will kill it instantly rather than launch a battle.

I've given the player a few rooms (each room has it's own randomized board layout) to mess around in.  The rooms are populated with zombies of various levels.  A higher level zombie has a larger movement radius and is more likely to be smart (i.e. go straight for Dwight rather than stumble around randomly).

Errr... and it's really a lot more fun than that screen shot makes it look...

I'd love it some people could toy around with it for a while and report any bugs to me!  Thanks!

Download the alpha here: dwight.rar -- less than 1MB (http://games.thexiis.com/files/dwight.rar)

Nice stuff so far! I wasn't able to try the demos yet, but I shall do so soon!

Here is my contribution - a demo of a small game I'm working on:

CLICKSEY HERE WITH MOUSE (http://www.origamihero.com/files/chapter1.zip)
~2 MB

This is a fantasy game with a more serious theme. There are 7 playable rooms so far, the work of 4 days. It still lacks a lot of descriptions and hotspots since I'm only adding what's necessary for now.

The recommended age to play this is 16+ because there's lots of blood and a pixelled, nekkid man. If the deity you've choosen to worship will smite you with thunderbolts if you see a nekkid pixel man or if you're simply too prudish, don't play! :=

Dang Bernie, that's some nice art.  The game looks and sounds amazing!  Really nice work there!

And Puddin', Drugbust looks awesome.  Great art.  I love the little touches like the inventory folding out like the pictures in a wallet.  And the fact that each screen is populated and active makes the gameworld feel really alive.  Nice stuff!

Sinitrena, can't wait for an English version so I know what the hell I'm doing!  Looks like a good start though!

Can't wait to try yours out Barbarian!  Looks very atmospheric.  I'm assuming that the light is coming from the lantern and will move around the screen with the player.  If so, wow! If no... still neat.

I'm off to bed, but I look forward to waking up to more Released Somethings!

DEFLUS TECHNICAL DEMO (http://koti.mbnet.fi/mwe/peli_zip/deflus_demo.zip)

It is done at last. The game is in 320x200 and 32-bit because the GUI graphics look best in true color. But it doesn't change much if you downgrade it to 16-bit, so if it runs slowly, please do so.

Here's some other related stuff:

Some alien sketch Mozesh drew.

(http://koti.mbnet.fi/mwe/kuvat/scientist.png)(http://koti.mbnet.fi/mwe/kuvat/scientist.png) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/mwe/kuvat/science%20guy.png)(http://koti.mbnet.fi/mwe/kuvat/science%20guy.png)
Another important character and his portrait picture.

And just for comparison, here are some characters we were going to use, before we decided to go for more realistic style. All made by Mozesh:

Aren't those cute? ^_^

We won't reveal anything about the story because it's still in designing stage. It's a sci-fi/horror game based in somewhere faraway future. It is gonna very serious game, though the demo is a bit parodic. That's all I'll tell you. :)

Hope you'll enjoy the demo!

This is about one minute of sound (you can't really call it music) I've done yesterday evening (for Night of Fire). I don't know anything about composing, but yesterday I felt a bit creative and, well ...

Maybe it's not ready yet. I'll probably add something more or take a few seconds out ... we'll see. Maybe I won't use it at all but so far it is planned for a scene where you sneak around in somebody else's cellar.

Introducing RON Movies, a game/toy/tool made with Adventure Game Studio where you can write your own little movies and episodes that take place in Reality-on-the-Norm with most of the exisiting characters. RON Movies comes with a built-in editor, which will look something like this:

The construction of your movie is not visual, however, it is a script that you write, which the game will read and play back. The script would look something like this:

Location "Restaurant".
Lucca: Position 234, 148.
Guido: Position 200, 120; Face Lucca.
Lucca: Face Guido.
Fade in.
Lucca: Say "Guido! What are you doing here? You'll drive away the costumers!".
(etc.)
Fade out.

Hopefully, it's not too complicated to understand. It really allows you to write scenes very very quickly, and it's really fun to write really crazy stories. Sometimes I just get distracted testing the current progress.

The editor is there to help you look for the names of hotspots, characters, and locations. You can move the characters around and even test their walking by just clicking arond the screen like any adventure game. You can also write the script inside the editor, or you can always use notepad or any other editor you  like.

I wanted to release the beta today for Release Something, but I decided not to because I feel that is still very incomplete and I want to add a few features to make it easy to work with. A beta will come out in November sometime, when I feel that the whole system is ready to go. If you're interested in writing stories for the final release date, feel free to send me a PM.

Edit: Demo now available. Check out Page 3 of this thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=22799.msg287957#msg287957).

QuoteSinitrena, can't wait for an English version so I know what the hell I'm doing!  Looks like a good start though!
Well, you'll have to wait for the finished version  ;D

But for all you non- german speaker:
The button "start" opens up a GUI where you can choose to either create a new character ("Neuer Held"), take a charakter in your groud ("Held in die Gruppe nehmen"), start the game ("Auf in den Kampf") or cancel (Abbrechen). You can remove an already choosen character by right clicking on the portrait or look on the character menue by left click on a portrait.
When you decide to create a new character you can choose what species he'll be (Mensch, Elf, Zwerg, Halbelf) and what profession he'll have (Krieger, Dieb, Magier, Jäger, Priester, Barde)
Well, that's not all you can do, but this should help a bit, I think.

The Deflus tech demo is extremely nice!  It's a slick and easy to use interface.  Can't wait for the real game.  One suggestion though:  somehow have the game predict if a word will need to go to the next line before it's displayed on the screen.  The way that the word starts on one line and then jumps to the next when it becomes to long is distracting.  Kinoko had this problem recently:
see this thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=22964.0)
Nice stuff!

Edmundo, fantastic idea!  I can't wait to try it out.  This must be really fun to code!  You'll have to organize a RON film festival when you're done!

Edit: Speaking of Kinoko... where the hell is the playable Gift of Aldora Demo?!?!

Speaking of me...  sorry! I went on holiday ^_^ Yamanashi-ken to see my friends in Fujiyoshida, right smack next to Mt Fuji! So, anyway, I wasnt around for the opening of this thread *sniff*

Anyway, everyone did a great job! I'm so, utterly impressed with everyone's entries!

I didn't get my demo finished in time, unfortunately. I had too many unresolved scripting problems and not enough time to get all the coding done.

But in the spirit of Release Something, I'm gonna give you all that I have anyway. It's buggy, it's incomlete, it's not an official demo yet but heck, you can start it up and see the intro so far and have a run around. I'll go away ad just 'ready' the file now. Uh, I'll be back.

I did it! I completed a game. Admittedly it isn't made in AGS as I felt AGS was to awesome for this task. It's also hosted on Angelfire *cringe*. For these inconveniences, please don't lynch me or anything like that. Anyway..

It's called Liam 3000. It's a platformer, and to quote the currently not-on-the-web html file for it,
"Believe it or not, Liam 3000 is actually based on a real person. So are most of the characters in the game. This does kind of make the whole game a giant in-joke, which only a few people will actually understand, but -to quote Liam himself- feh. I mean, Jonny RPG and Duzz Quest do the same thing and nobody complained about that. And besides, Liam 3000 is a platformer with very little plot so who cares. Enjoy!"

Righteo, here we go: http://kinoko.futariba.com/misc/giftofaldora.zip

This isn't a proper demo, just a little buggy taste of more to come. As I said before, you can see the beginnings of the beginning here, but there are no cut scenes yet so you'll just start randomly in the own and you can wander around.

I chopped a lot of features out that weren't working properly, so just about NOTHING is the way it will be when it's done. The text boxes, the running engine, the music during the opening "story"... believe me, this is an incomplete skeleton.

There'll no doubt be lots of bugs and glitches but bear with me. The theme music, by the way, was whipped up in an amazingly short time by modgeulator, so HUGE THANKS for that!

Okay, because I'm too lazy to make a text file to go along with it...

Enter = START
Shift = SELECT
X = Do stuff/talk
Z = Cancel
A = Run (hold down to run when walking)
S = GUI/Menu
D = Display
C = ... I can't even remember. Something

You can change the keys with TAB. To quit, still use CTRL + Q and then press Enter.

Oh, also, you cant use magic or anything, and a lot of the items probably don't work at all. In fact, there's a significant lack of sound effects/visual effects. Like I said, bare bones.

Anyway... Gift of Aldora! Hurrah!

Well, I really wanted to Release Something, but my birthday was this weekend so I'm away with my sweetie and I forgot to put the tech demo on my laptop. So naturally, I can't upload it until I get home tomorrow.

Will this be open until Nov. 1 or will I have to wait for the next one?

Well, the only way I can salve my guilt about letting everyone down is to go and get in the sauna again. I'll be thinking of all of you while I soak, really.

Ok, here is the link to one of my first games I created. I didn't really create it for release something but it hasn't yet been released yet so I suppose this is the appropriate forum for it. Before you download this game I would like to say that I am only getting to grips with the basics of AGS and so this game is nothing more than one guy moving to one room to the next (There are only 6 scenes/rooms). Only download it to play if you really haven't anything else to do, otherwise it's not worth your time. To me it was an absolute triumph but in comparison to the rest of the games I've played, (even the really bad ones) I can probably say that this would probably rank as the worst one out of the lot! So don't say you haven't been warned how bad this game is! The object of the game is to get one object and give it to a beggar, but their are a few objects you can pick up (try not to click the eye arrow on any object you pick up, as this can sometimes crash the game). Well that's about all I can say about the game really except one interesting fact I haven't yet told you. The  character frames were first drawn by me in pencil and then scanned into my computer, I then used the windows programme "paint" to paint the frames, this shows how bad my drawing skills are. But I have to say that there is some humour in the game and the movement of the character is enough to make you laugh, (well it made me laugh after I created it). This game can be downloaded 25 times from now until the 6/11/05. Thanks

Kinoko:

The pre-demo was really great.  As you warned, there were a few bugs here and there (it may have been my crappy laptop keyboard, but the diagonal-down movement wasn't working; the reporter spat out a random "H" at one point; and I managed to imbed myself in a wall once and had to restart), but you replicated the old-school feeling really well.  Very nice!  One thing bugs me about the old-school formula though.  Why make the A button the "run" button?  Why not make it the "walk" button.  Walking is painfully slow, so people will play 98% of the game holding the A button to run and only let go when they need to be very deliberate about where they're standing.  Why not let run be the default so we only have to play 2% of the game while holding down the A button?

Also, I thought the keyboard layout should be tweaked a bit...

Just my $0.02 USD.

The things that I loved:

-Using reporters to save.  (Will there be a random reporter standing at the entrance to Evil Boss' lair trying to get the scoop on the final battle?)

-Singing to the plant.

-Everything.

Um, I'm releasing something else...

A DEMO FOR RON MOVIES, INCLUDING A MOVIE MADE BY ME! (http://files.cellosoft.com/netmonkey/coppola.zip)

I'd  like to thank Grundislav for correcting the foreign language used in the movie,  Petteri for improving the theme used in the movie loading screen (one that some of you may recognize ;)), and specially Scotch for helping me understand plugin writing for AGS 2.7 and beyond.

Also, the editor that you saw earlier has been turned off, it's just too buggy... you could attempt to write your own movie, but it wouldn't be as easy! So, enjoy!

PS- You may wonder why it's called Coppola... that's the uh, the name I gave it for version 1.0, named after famous director Francis Ford Coppola.

Ah, this is almost certainly to do with the key combination and your particular keyboard. Some keyboards can't take certain combinations of keys. Up-left never worked on my computer back home but it's fine on my lap top. This is partly why you have the option to change the keys using the TAB button (or before you start a game).

Quotethe reporter spat out a random "H" at one point; and I managed to imbed myself in a wall once and had to restart), but you replicated the old-school feeling really well.
Ã,

Ah yeah, some things I forgot to shoddily patch up before zipping the game up. Whoops!

I see your point, and I agree... but in the spirit of not trying anything new, I'm gonna keep it like the old school games and have you hold the button down all the time to run. I don't know, I kinda like always having a button pressed down. Makes me feel like I'm always working :P

QuoteAlso, I thought the keyboard layout should be tweaked a bit...
How so? I mean... you can already set your own keys... do you mean the default should be changed or you should be able to change something you currently can't?

I thought it was funny that you mentioned that you didn't even know what the C key was for... almost like showing that the control scheme is kind of hard to remember... I think it should be more straight forward, where you can move the characters with the arrow keys or WASD, and then have space, tab, enter, ctrl, and alt mean something....

Made it!

Just got back from my birthday extravaganza and I find this thread isn't locked yet.

So without further ado, here's my entry for Release Something!

http://home.earthlink.net/~twiarchive/data/FF-TechDemo.rar

It's a slice out of one of the mini-games from my upcoming Barn Runner: The Forever Friday. You have to try to avoid the oncoming traffic and get your flying car to the top of the screen and safety.

The full version of the level is much, much larger and you have greater range of movement and active weapons but this demo should give you an idea of the work I'm putting into the game.

Enjoy and I'm sorry this is a few days late!

Fun stuff Ponch!  But it's hard as hell.  Mostly because you can't go back or forth yet.  When you're stuck in the middle of the screen you really don't have enough time to react unless you have the coarse memorized.  Excellent scripting though!

I'm glad you liked the demo, Vince. Yeah, it is too hard but it's not really playtested for the fun factor, it's more about showing off the scripting. The full version already supports full range of movement and has enemy A.I. that chases you around the screen instead of just rushing at you. I stripped quite a bit out before I released it... have to save something for the final game, don't you know. ;)

I'm impressed with everyone's efforts (had quite a bit of time to play them on vacation), but I'm really amazed with Increators and Kinoko's. Finally nice to see something from Gift of Aldora -- it sort of takes me back to the old Zelda days.

Ah, memories (and hunger) overcome me. I must away... to Taco Bell!

InCreator - Yeah, I know it's a tired old sprite, but I'm a tired old man. That explosion is a placeholder and I hope to replace it with something better before I release the game. It's kind of low on the priority list, but it's due to be replaced eventually.

SpacePirateCaine - Cool model sheets. Your character design really shines.

Krysis - I love cows! Every AGS game should feature a cow in some form. The lord of the cows commands it!

Well, it looks like Release Something (autumn) if finally winding down. I look forward to the next one. I can't wait to see how some of these games progress.
