After much deliberation (about 5 minutes of my snack time), I decided on a topic for this next JAM.
Fearless Leader
I want to see renditions of a military genius (or moron, you decide) who lived in the past or will live in the future (or alternate futures, you decide). The astute reader will notice that I do not want to see sprites of present leaders. If you submit a present leader, I will censure you. Believe me, that it hurts a lot.
My guidelines require you to draw aforementioned sprite with a maximum size of 150 by 150 pixels. You can use up to 40 colors.
I am looking for (and will laud) creative choice of subject, superior technical execution (if that term isn't puffery, I don't know what is), and the viability of the sprite in an actual adventure game.
In summary, your entry must be:
- Military leader, past or future
- no larger than 150x150 pixels (sorry for any confusion)
- 40 colors (or fewer)
- Totally sweet
Good luck and happy spriting!
Whew...just in time. I can only think of 2 easily caricaturisable past military leaders, and I got 1 of them:

150x150 39 colors
In a dark future where radioactive monsters plague the earth, one hero will rise to lead mankind...

Cap'n Danny Treadmill
Well, pirates count as fearless military leaders, right? Ah, and that's a possum he has, rather than a traditional parrot.
Conan the King ...

Edward "Blackbeard" Teach - One of the pioneers of psychological warfare.
It's not exactly the most original idea I've had so far - I got it looking at Tiki's, but he was definitely one hell of a leader.
Napolean the conquerer who continued his conquest after breaking out of his island prison!
Ho ho, wee wee!

I had to enter. The topic was perfect. I made this a year ago. The only problem is I used 256 colors. Perhaps we can bend the rules? ;)
I know "I'm with stupid"!!! But my MSpaint is sooo old I can't save anything else but bmps. Frust!
By the way the link above shows a "x2" pic.
First: MSpaint does save in other formats. For example PNG's. Second: Don't double post, use the modify-button in your post.
Okay, now I stop pretending to be a moderator. Moderator_mode=off; ;)
Third: That's some damn wonderful art! :D Too bad it has too many colors. :)

Only if you use Windows XP. Otherwise it's limited to gif, bmp and, I think, tga.
Hmm, okay sorry. I didn't know that. :P
Well on my old pc I had win95 in which paint only could save as BMP, so I used Irvanview to save it to png or other formats.
Good entries all!

Not a problem. Just decrease colour limit to 40 in some graphic program (e.g. Paint Shop Pro). I've done it for you:
(http://www.geocities.com/arcanusmysterii/ags/cc40colors.png) (40 colours)
You probably won't see any bigger difference. ;)
how do you make a picture have less colors in photoshop ???
i have one but its way too many colors. HELP!
Image-mode-index
iirc.
WTF! :P
am i going the right way because if i am im confused.

Take it to PMs and stop cluttering up this competition thread.

welll he was kinda a leader
they both did actually (have a thing for Egyptian queeens). The same one too, I think. Never liked Marc Anthony though. Dunno why. Reason is probably exemplified in that sprite.
The most Fearless Leader of them all!

I made the head too big, so now he's a weird caricature thing...

Here it is, rezised and redone (100 x 110)

Commander Pineapple - leader of Alpha-seti-3.
* edit * - just realized that he is infact a current leader and so should probably be disqualified.

That's Jeanne d'Arc (1412-1431), heroine of France.
(Tiki, I loved the possum as a pirate's pet, instead of a parrot! :D)
The Jam is over!
Wow, I did not expect this many quality entries. As a result, I will announce the runner-ups in addition to the winner (although all the decisions will be tough).
4th place â€" Darth Mandarb
Conan was an excellent subject, I just would've liked to see him in a more dynamic, kingly pose.
3rd place â€" Progzmax
I really liked this piece, as it definitely showcased your talent. I like the vibrant colors you used and the simple shading on the sprite itself. Technically, I think this sprite was the best drawn one in the Jam. I could definitely tell he was a warrior, but there weren't any clues to his leadership (something necessary when you're inventing a character from the future). A crown, scepter, military badges, or even a distant army would've helped me as a viewer.
2nd place â€" SpacePirateCaine
I'm a big fan of Blackbeard lore, and it was good to see your attention to detail (the pistols and the fuses in his hair). I definitely think you should've pushed his intimidation factor a little farther (added more fuses, fire, plume, cutlass), because he looks a little like a Confederate soldier from the American Civil War.
1st place â€" Ali
Although I'm not usually a fan of cartoon sprites, yours was an excellent caricature of the Roman general. Very usable as a sprite, it also conveys a pompous overconfidence fitting of Marc Anthony. As far as crits go, it would have been nice include Cleopatra in your picture, making him look more like a show-off. Also, I would like to see his stomach look less like a loaf of bread.
Congratulations to all the entrants for making this a great Jam!
