Title: Splite Jam! 7/17-7/24 A Winner Is
Post by: Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens on Tue 18/07/2006 01:53:05
Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to take one (yes, one) of your favorite Jim Henson's Muppet characters and translate him/her/it into a game sprite.

Restrictions:

120x200  (maximum)  40x80 (minimum)

colors: 32 (more than enough for any 2d sprite!)

Game categories available: Graphic Adventure, action-platformer, fighting, racing.

Obviously each category comes with its own unique brand of expectations.  For a racing game for example, you'd draw the muppet AND his vehicle of choice, like Fozzy in a broken down old truck.  For a fighting game the character would be larger and more stylistic.

I will be judging based on faithfulness to the source material as well as quality and creativity.  Remember that these are the Muppets, and as such are zany characters!

Most of the Muppet Show cast can be found here.

Gentlemen, START YOUR ENGINES!

Edit:  Please state which game category your sprite is for.

well it seems i didn't quite follow the rules the last time so i re-drew it to so it's above the minimum resolution, i don't like it as much as my original one thoughÃ,  :-\

I'm annoyed since I was going to enter with a version of the "YIP YIP" aliens then I found out they were from sesame street and not from the Muppets. Unless the rules could get bent a little, I will just draw another character.

Looking good so far guys and gals ;D

The Great Gonzo
Fighting Game or Platform Game Baddie
Weapon of choice - nunchucks

Took just under an hour.

I realize that it's too small.  I suppose I can add some blank background, but I don't care about winning anything.

Edit: Yeah, I cheated and added some space.

Doesn't look like you've lost any of your talent. Not that I've seen any of your previous work.

Some very good entries this time, and a tough decision between:

Tiki's Nunchuk Gonzo!

Zabnat's hatless Fozzy

Evil's Drumset driving Animal

and Captain Binky's hot rodding Beaker

All four are really well done and would be nice to see in a game, but only one can be the winner.  Therefore, I choose...

Zabnat!  Remember to start a new sprite competition soon.

A great way to start off on the forums, zabnat. A sprite jam win with your first post :D.

Wow, I hadn't anticipate this kind of start on these forums  :o
Especially when I haven't created pixel art for quite a while and there were some great sprites on this jam.

About the hat. In some of the other reference pics he had a hat and on some he didn't. Well, I used one where he didn't and so in my sketch (http://bantza.raah.fi/fozzie_luonnos.jpg) he didn't have a hat :)
Then I noticed that he was one pixel too narrow and tried to make a hat in his hand to get more width but I wasn't happy with it so I made a shadow to get that width and he was left without the hat :)
Don't know if the hat is vital part of Fozzie, but I haven't seen a single episode of the muppet show so I can't really say :)

I already have some devilish restrictions in mind for the next sprite jam  ;)
