Title: Spright Jham 12.14-12.21.05
Post by: big brother on Thu 15/12/2005 04:01:40
I'd like to welcome everyone to this thread. Gentlemen...and the la-dy. Oh, you too, I didn't forget you. My, your eyeshadow sure makes that dress look pretty! In case no one reads the titles, this is a weekly character drawing competition, where the winner takes all. And by all, I mean the winner takes my job as host for next week.

Don't all pee your pants at once.

Since my creative well is frozen over, I decided to go with the first topic that stopped by my head for a cup of tea and some hardtack. And since this idea coincides with the holiday spirit, may I introduce:

A TRAVELER!

Should you enter, you must pixel a character who is a traveler. Any time period is welcome, so shovel some coal in your imagination! Here are some ideas to spark that fire:

Things a traveler might have
Snowshoes
Mukluks
Hiking boots
Boots with fur trim
Uggs
Pancho
Safari hat
Extra cell phone battery
Backpack
Icepick
Climbing gear
Water purifying tablets
Dutch oven
Sunglasses
Sunblock lotion
Condom
Baked beans (canned)
Mosquito spray
Mutant repellent
Foreign phrasebook (pocket-sized)
Traveler's cheques (duh!)
Garlic and a wooden stake
Swiss Army knife
A sidekick

Things a traveler wouldn't have
A tutu
Chinese porcelain tea set (with blue flowers)
Self-respect

Restrictions
Max size: 128x128
Max colors: 32
Max bribe: $1,000 (cash, please. I want to keep this below the IRS's radar)

Get to work, people!

i'll get the ball rolling:

the traveler that brings death. hope you never meet him.
128x128, 9 colours.

(http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/9406/traveller1522dec6yf.gif) (http://imageshack.us)

NO PAINTOVER, NOT TRACED, with a MOUSE.
i used a painting that i had on my pc as reference. some of you might have seen it before, especially if you've been in the diablo 2 lod circles.
the original pic's title is "death dealer".
i realised i never really drew a horse myself, and i wanted a horse in it, since the restrictions are 128x128, so i started to search for horse reference, lucky i remembered about this pic.
edit: thanks, bb. here is the reference pic. same pose, lost the shield and sword.
http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/4122/death8tl.jpg

(not an entry. cant really take credit for frazetta's excellent work)

I enter NOW!

The Banished Travelers:
Once in a far off kingdom there lived a princess. In the king's forces were a berzerker. His frenzy was fatal to enemies and opposing armies feared him as he was known as the "red fist of a thousand teeth". He brought the king many victories. Until the day he lost control and he killed an allied knight of royal birth in his rage. The king banished him, and so too the princess as she would not see him go. She is the only one that can calm his anger.

So she is the traveler with the escort berzerker. Together they travel in foreign worlds never to return. Bleh. 3x 114x120 26 colors.

(http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/8262/traveler5qg.gif) (http://imageshack.us)

Mordalles: WOW! :o that is the most amazing thing i've ever seen! I am being totally serious and unbiased! My goodness!

Mozza: Sportyjay said "I have no chance," and I finished the statement using the well-known lines from "All Your Base Are Belong To Us." "How are you gentlemen? All your base are belong to us. You have no chance to survive make your time."

Then, I said I would originally have voted for Mordy, because the Pale Rider is just too bad-ass. However, after seeing a certain person post the same character that I did, only much better, I assured that my vote would undoubtably go to him, using a popular line from that character.

It's the Doctor with the TARDIS.
(http://www.execulink.com/~cdowning/ps/images/10thdoc.gif) x2 (http://www.execulink.com/~cdowning/ps/images/10thdoc.gif)
84 x 125, 32 colours.

The Doctor's pose came from Tennant's original photo shoot.  The reason for the high number of colours comes from the TARDIS (and that's after abandonding the frosted windows and reworking the colours somewhat).  The Doctor himself is only 35 x 90 and 21 colours.

Sorry for my American ignorance. In American TV, we have only ever gotten to see (as far as I know) Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, and Tom McCann. William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton were only ever seen in "The Three Doctors," for some reason Peter Davison and I think possibly Colin Baker were only ever seen on video (I listed Colin because I've seen him before, but I think it was on video rather than on TV). Christopher Eccleston's episodes were only ever available for illegal download. I've NEVER heard of "Tennant."

FYI David Tennant has only appeared very briefly on British television as Dr. Who (when Ecclestone (sp?) turned in to him). He'll be in a christmas special as the doctor and then in a new series in 2006.

A character from my webcomic,. Disguised as a gypsy. Traveller is another word for gypsy. So it's valid. It's valid!
The colours looked cooler when i was viewing it in graphicsgale. And speaking of colours...I didn't count how many I used in this...I doubt it's more than 32, though.

And that's why I wrote her changing clothes into the plot.

That's why I'm not happy with it. I had a lot of trouble with Lyra, so by the time I was done and I realized she was too big, I didn't feel like fixing it.

Just pretend the bear is much bigger and we'll be in business.

Not a bad Santa at all, but one could argue that because of his red nose, he seems drunk! ;D

I know it is the cold and all, but that was he first thing I thought when I saw it! Sorry

I would think he's drunk, but more because of the bell...

I actually like the red nose-
"His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!"

Santa in the Chronicles of Narnia was one bad mofo... I want Santa to bring me a sword one year... and then give me permission to run around using it...

I would prefer a gun from santa. I remember thinking that while watching the movie. Screw getting close to those scary looking minotaurs, I would shoot them from afar...because thats manly and adventurous...

Ok, since time is up, I guess it's my turn to post some things.
As far as the contest goes, my secret criteria was "an original character". I know it sounds cheap, but otherwise it would be impossible to pick a winner.

We should prolly make a separate competition like a "Dr. Who weekly" or something.

A few notes:
Darth: I like your direction! It seems like every competition you enter you really can think outside the box!

A-Head: Your sprite was pretty, but I think it's a little too elaborate for a game (esp the specific lighting and the exterior antialiasing).

Steve: Some of those items look familiar.... :) Good work, though.

Buloght: I liked your sprites, but it looks like they're more ready to fight than travel.

Gregor: Charming. The character has a lot of personality, and strikes me as a Mr. Magoo sort (cane, hat, glasses). Definitely someone I could see getting into an adventure. Congratulations, you win!

Nepotism at its finest.  Actually, based upon the Traveller theme, original character criterion, and usability I think it's a fine choice.  Congratulations, Geoff.
