Title: Sprite Jam! :: apr 12~19 :: Mars Cafe
Post by: Stefano on Wed 12/04/2006 20:53:39
::Mars Cafe::

°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°||°º¤ø,¸,ø¤º°`°

"- Welcome, fraaaaktameee (space traveler). Welcome to my cafe..."
- says Urk, the owner of Mars Cafe.

This is one of the most famous places in the galaxy and a well deserved
treat for all sorts of tired travelers. Mr. Urk makes sure he (it) receives
each one with a smile (or something resembling a smile). It's a nice place,
in a weird kind of way.

"- Please take of your skrrrrtfaaa (coat) and take a jooork (seat). Relax, yes?"

After he (it) shows you to your table, he (it) stands (seats, crouches or wathever)
next to you, hands over the menu and continues: "Ah! I recomend the martian ooze...
is quite fresh and tasty today, yes? Enjoy your raaatfa (stay)."

Then, he quickly turns back to welcome the next customer, who have just arived.

°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°||°º¤ø,¸,ø¤º°`°

Although this is your first visit to Mars Cafe, it feels like home. There's even an alien
that almost look like a gooey version of your beloved wife. Definetly feels like home.
You enjoy the moment and look around. You see all sort of creatures amazing creatures...
humanoids and  non-humanoids; short ones, tall ones; a red squary bunch of aliens is
sitting on a table right next to you; you can see a bearded and horned version of Maryl Strip
sitting at the bar... so much diversity... they would sure be good references for a AGS game
when you're back on Earth... What a brilliant idea! You pull your plasma scap-book from your
shirt pocket and start drawing...

Max height and width: 250px;
Max colors: 30;

Max eyeballs: 2.000, 221;
Max orifices: 6.000,543;
Max horns: 250.000,218;

~ Harrr nfa kraaaa!
   (Of you go!)

PS1. sorry for the delay. My life is quite a mess right now.
PS2. before anyone asks, the rules about eyeballs, orifices and horns are just a joke.
PS3. Smurfs don't really exist.

67x116 pixels, made in Paint (4~5 hours).

Strike Ctrl+F5 if you can't see it.

I'm sure there is a place for a dark character on every planet. I don't even call him and still don't have any idea. Maybe Blorgh?

Shog verdhn infrg s yorg! (Hope you like it!)

Meet Gastrouboos:
He is a male Bowelbouboos, a lethargical race that evolved in the primordial methan-filled sludge of Purge VI. The first pseudo-life to leave the swamps were sludge bubbles filled with (of course) methane and other organic components. Their means of propulsion came from a burst of gas giving them some form of nondirectional mobility. Early on in the developement of higher organisms cousin nature saw the necessity of long necks to prevent suffication from their own emissions. This directly led to co-evolving a telescope-like finger to gather food from the ground without having to bend down.

Oh, and Gastrouboos is wearing his nylon Nadoos around his neck for decencys sake since it's not mating season.

Maybe I'll find the time to animate him... That'll be interesting! ;)

An alien cocktail-upper-class-lady of some sort.

EDIT: Changed the colours a bit, so I got rid of the damn grey background.

See y'all around.

Well, I thought I'd try, I realize that this might have fit a little better at the last contest, but, what the heck?

I present, a Crrlee citizen.  Yes, a Crrlee, this is what the aliens from Space Battles! look like in my head.  This particular Crrlee spends its time focusing its mental powers, like levitation.  It uses Meta-Physical limbs to control objects.

(Inconceivable meta-physical limbs not portrayed)

Go ahead and rip my entry to shreds...lol

MashPotatoe,
Now I won't have boobies on my signature...  ;D Can I draw boobies on your dolphin? hahahahah. Just kidding.

All of you guys,
This trophies thing was a cool idea, from one perspective.
On the other hand, some people seem to be willing to do anything for a trophy. I mean, I do like the trophies, but I always have joined the competiotion because I like it. That's my main motivation.

It's the first time I see a rip-off sprite apear on a sprite jam. Maybe we should think this trophy thing over. We had less entries the way it was, but every single participant was actualy willig to enter and loosing, just to have a little fun.

Let's not turn this bright competition into a predatory thing.

I agree. One thing is to missunderstand a rule or something like that, like tracing, or using old work, dunno, that kind of things.... This is simply a dirty cheat. Maybe (EDIT: A disqualification) not forever, but for a month, or some period.

I doubted when I saw the amazing sprite for the first time, but I thought, as many others, that I was assuming too much and giving the benefit of the doubt was the correct decission. I am not specially happy to see I was right about my reluctances, I feel disapointed, actually.

Airgo, someone might feel tempted to post that making an accusation as a first post is disgusting. If someone aks me, I will deffend you, thanks for this.

I have expressed reservations about the trophies in another thread, but simply because I was worried that participation might drop if trophies were no longer offered--I didn't think they would result in copied sprites :(

Another concern I had was if some people might not enter sprites because they would not have time to make trophies for the next week.

Trophies are a nice bonus, and I personally like them, but if it takes away from the fun of sprite jams, I say we drop 'em.

BTW- making an accusation in a first post is definitely NOT bad if you've got evidence to back it up.  I get really ticked when people take credit for other people's work, not to mention, submitting copies wastes the other participants' time (what if it had won?).  So yes, Airgo, thanks ^_^

A freaky alien inspired crawling thing bursts from the ground. Fairly easy to kill, just shoot the face that appears and dodge the charge attacks and falling rocks. Possible to stand on the two frount feet but watch our for when he jumps into the air.

I may enter another non B+W image soon  :D

Anghellic, you need an attitude adjustment. I understand this sort of thing as a joke (albeit played out to no end), but defending your ridiculous first claim is disrespectful to everyone who spent time to create their own entry.

Don't expect anyone to accept future entries from you.

Perhaps Gilbot can do us all a favor and trim the fat from this otherwise juicy jam.

But... which is the crap about removing the trophies? Trophies are not compulsory, you can make them, when hosting an SJ... or not!

So, what happens if you have won an SJ and that week's host doesn't Ã, want to make a trophy for you? Well... You have won... Do it yourself!

I would see silly to make compulsory to any SJ host to make trophies. But in the same level we have the decission of prohibiting them, IMO...

And now, I doubting if we should go to general, shut up, or what, but Sprite Jam IMO should be a whole "post with sprite" thread, so, being hypocrital (because this post of mine has no post ^_^) I encourage people to bring this to another place.

Edit: Here is the link to discuss about it... In General.

there is no such game? google for it. i knew it under "super probotector - the alien rebels"
seems like its also known under "Contra Advance: The Alien Wars"
the pics are uploaded at imageshack because i didnt find a picture of him in the web.
so i switched on the snes emulator and quickly cheated myself up to the 6th stage of the game to take screenshots.

Anghelic your busted stop it even the pixel are exact match you didnt even take time to change the shading or color scheme or whatever... like i said give us a work in developement.

I have been wondering why your response is taking so long .... making one now ???

Just admit it. And realise that pic belongs to the people that made it and that some serious legal trouble could be coming your way if yo ucontinue doing things like this...

Well, it's not of a Konami level of quality and even though I don't have any work in progress to prove it, I promise I made it myself using only biodegradable pixels collected by only the finest slaves in all the sprite mines of Kressel, which coincidentially is also the homeworld of the honorable Great-Glag of Zice Mi. Sudranjah Pel Fatriakantroggumonif portraited below. Despicable accusations that hix substantial wealth came to great extent from slave trading were recently silenced after the disappearance of several reporters who had claimed as much. That this lead to a reemergence of equally ridiculous rumors of hik having contacts to galactic organized crime can only be described as tragic. So without further ado, I present to you Mi. Fatrikantroggumonif.

Name: Sudranjah Pel Fatriakantroggumonif IV
Height and width: one hundred twenty-five and fifty pixels respectively
Weight: we would never tell
Colors: ninteen plus one background color
Eyeballs: two plus two replacements
Orifices: twelve
Tentacles: sixty, but hi's wearing pants, in order not to ridicule the members of members of unfortunately less-endowed species, so you obviously (and as someone who speaks from experience, also unfortunately) you can't see them
Birthplace Palleton, Kressel
Ambitions: Having many godchildren.
Turn-ons: Open-mindedness, distreetness and endless deathmarches through trackless deserts long walks along beaches.
Turn-offs: Laziness, facial hair, non-smokers and species with insufficient orifices.

OK, OK, I admit that I reused an old sprite I made back when I was working on The Great Giana Sisters (that Mario sprite is actually a hack), but my promise that I made it myself still stands. It was quite hard to get the C64 to display more than 16 colors, I can tell you.

Yeah, I didn't really notice it until I was done. It is weird, but it was like the first one to pop up on google image that fit what I wanted and I was too lazy to do it over.

And now back to our regularly scheduled Sprite Jam o' Fun!

This guy (by pure coincidence) just happend to look alot like Barney Gumble from the Simpsons. Haven't figured out a name for him or anything like it.
Belive it's 30 colours and within the pixel restriction.

I've been working on this sprite for the past day and noticed there aren't any human types represented in this cafe!  Shameful.

Colors: 18

Everyone, meet GIRL 6!

(http://members.cox.net/progzmax/girl6.gif)
(http://members.cox.net/progzmax/girl6.gif)

Real Name:  Sunset Kener
Alter Ego:  Girl 6!
Father: Daryll Kener
Mother: Starr
Known Powers:  Through concentration Sunset is able to spawn up to 5 duplicates of herself that each behave and act according to her will, though lately the 5th duplicate has been showing signs of resistance.
Known Weaknesses:  It takes physical energy for each duplicate Sunset creates, energy that can only be replenished by food and rest.  Extreme use of her power could prove fatal.  Also, the duplicates can only function within a radius of 1200 ft. currently before they phase out of existence, and maintaining them for more than an hour is a great strain.

She also carries a small stun pistol at her father's behest.

Known Enemies: The Party Crashers (Matt Traction, The Fool, Rubbdubb, Flaxia)
Age: 19
Height: 5'4" (or 32' if all duplicates stand on her shoulders)
Weight: 42 GMU's (Generic Mass Units)
Eye Color: Amber
Species: Human/Coraxian crossbreed

Background:

Sunset was born on the distant station Goliath VII, a giant roving Earth Union military base sent to Corax Prime during a planetary crisis in which the Coraxians, through long seclusion and mass inbreeding, were no longer able to reproduce with members of their own species.  Fortunately for the Coraxians, however, a few human soldiers on furlough could not resist the stunning beauty of the natives and discovered (much to their dismay) that human males and coraxian females could somehow reproduce.  Shortly thereafter an accord was made and thousands of horny males signed up to 'aid' the desperate Coraxians in their quest for survival; Sunset was the product of one of the first such couplings, and after extensive study for defects or malformities was allowed to be raised as a normal child.

For all intents and purposes, Sunset appeared to be a normal, healthy human child (aside from a highly-tuned set of pointed ears inherited from her mother) and nothing seemed out of the ordinary until her 15th birthday when her cells suddenly began to divide at an alarming rate, ultimately creating a twin!  Terrified of this strange doppleganger, Sunset ran from her home only to return later to find the twin had disappeared.  Later it was discovered that Sunset could, at will, create up to 5 duplicates of herself, though with limitations.

While at the Mars Cafe with her friends, Sunset encountered the boisterous Starball
champion Matt Traction and his crew of misfit ne'er-do-wells, the so-called Party Crashers.  When they attempted to get rough, Sunset unintentionally summoned her duplicates which operated from her burst of anger and battered Traction senseless, making them instant enemies.  Sunset is currently the head cheerleader and founding member of Girl 6, her own team that cheers on Crash Russell and the Rocket Titans in their frequent matches against Matt Traction.

(http://koti.mbnet.fi/el_tonic/new/spacebooobs.png) X2

The Spaceboobs are (intelligent) native creatures of Jupiter that weigh practically nothing and float through space with their mouths open, while the other end passes gas that enters the front cavity. On Mars these creatures are kept afloat due to the lower gravity and do not have to produce as much hydrogen to stay in the air, just enough to keep their respiratory system running.
The Spaceboobs enjoy gaseous alcohol and are known to pick fights with anyone under the influece, but since their only means to fight back is to produce nauseationg chemicals, they usually retreat and thus are considered cowards with big mouths.

For some reason I'm getting the impression that the hidden meaning in that post was hidden too well ...

My guess is that Stefano is having to sort through all the useless shit posted in this thread to try and discover the actual entries so he can pick a winner.  Considering there are about 4 pages of nothing/worthless off-topic ramblings it's going to take some time ...

So, just be patient and give him the time needed to wade through the sewage that has become the Sprite Jams of late.

Okay gang ...

I got a PM from Stefano.  He's dealing with some real-world issues and isn't going to be around for a bit so he asked me to judge the competition.

After 7 hours of searching for actual entries here are the results:

3rd Place:

2nd Place:
El Senor El Drey w/

The Winner Is ...
1st Place - Krysis w/

Another victory for the great man of Krysis!!  Congrats buddy, you may start the next Sprite Jam.  I don't have time to make trophies :(  But if you want ... just add another to your collection(s).
