Title: Sprite Jam 17 Jan - 23 Jan - ninja/samurai
Post by: buloght on Sat 17/01/2009 21:11:20
I'm very unoriginal, so I thought it would be best following pirates with ninjas ...

So, design and sprite a ninja assasin or samurai warrior with constraints:

- 128 x 128 maximum pixels
- 24 colours

:D

Just asking, is there any adventure game so far who has a ninja playable character?

Ninjas are like the wind. You can't see it, but you can see it's effects.

It took me ages to decide how to draw my ninja, then I remembered that real ninjas all wear hats.

6 colours unless you count the grey backdrop colour.

From cutlasses to katanas: Who can complain!?

Edit: Similar to last time, here is the character put into a scene, just for fun.

Again, 6 colours.

Ps, nice sprites Evil and SPC :D

I did both a ninja assassin and a samurai warrior. Old school fighter style in 3 colors!

I guess it depends on what you define 'adventure' to be, but there are lots of actiion-adventure games with ninjas, like:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja_Gaiden

If you mean a standard point and click affair, though very simple:

Put together a quick entry as a brief break from working on my most recent project. Hope you like!

Samurai. 40x110 pixels, 18 colors + transparency.

Fact: There are also 15 ninjas in this image.
Edit: Added a katana in his right hand, just for fun.

Some initial inspirational sketches I drew to see how to get the oriental look (and some armour things).

Samurai not in armour:
1x
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Misj_Samurai_1x.png)

The size-limit was a little too much to do justice to this (actually quite simple) design, so I provide two additional versions to show what the character looks like.
- click for 2x enlargement - (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Misj_Samurai_2x.png)
- click for 4x enlargement - (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Misj_Samurai_4x.png)

Total colours: 9 (from a classical art point of view, not from a pixel-art point of view).
Line-thickness is loosely based on Chinese and Japanese calligraphy to enhance his oriental looks. Other aspects of the design were kept simple and clean to focus on the fluidity of the stance:
The reason why I didn't give him an armour is because I felt this too would distract from the stance (which is a pity, since I would have liked to have a try and draw the armour). The thickness of the lines also accompany this fluidity of the stance (although I feel I could have done that better).

As I tossed some ideas around I found antropomorphisation the best way to deal with the theme, so I went for a Gecko.

Geckos make perfect ninjas because they are agile, quick, carry their own poison supply, can do amazing leaps and, most important, are considered to taste nice when dried and put on a stick. They also can toss off their tail, a feat most human ninjas can't copy.

Twelve or so colours, 90x60. No intentional turtle reference at all  :=

Here is a generic, unoriginal, and unstylized ninja:

Steel yourselves for the somewhat symmetrial samurai!

- 16 colours

On a side note, while doing this, I found out that things drawn on my laptop may look good on it, but are horribly contrasted and saturated on any other machine.

Yeah, regarding colors/brightness I did notice that too working with my new laptop. But a few days ago I managed get the contrast right and now everything looks like it was on my old PC.

While at a petting zoo in 1984, four very unlucky nerds were exposed to COSMIC X, an experimental form of radiation that merged their dna with that of a common tapir, turning them into:

12 colors, c-64 palette
(http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr218/ProgZmax/tmnt.gif)

Seeking help for their condition, the four travel the world, eventually ending up at a monastery in the Himalayas where they are taught martial arts according to their talents by the wise Pi Yu:

Wilbur 'Master' Gates was a computer repairman before exposure to COSMIC X, and afterwards his IQ more than doubled.  He has been taught the secret ninja art of COMP-FU and wields mouse-chuks in addition to carrying a backpack full of gadgets to help the team out of difficult situations.  He has been designated team leader by Pi Yu, causing friction with Luke Solo, who believes he should be leader.

Lewis 'Krush-A-Lot' Lieberman is Wilbur's best friend and an avid Dungheaps & Douchebags player, where he always imagined himself as a Samurai Warrior.  Exposure to COSMIC X has made Lewis' skin as tough as steel, and Pi Yu has trained him extensively in sword combat.  Additionally, the COSMIC X rays have turned Lewis's dice into homing weapons that will return to him on command (provided he rolls good initiative).  He is the heart and muscle of the team.

A Star Bores fanatic, Luke Solo never went anywhere without his custom built steel double-lightsword with xenon bulbs, and when exposed to COSMIC X the xenon gas exploded into two brilliant beams of fire.  After many burns, Pi Yu trained Luke how to fight effectively with his weapon.  Additionally, Luke gained low-level telekinetic powers and can levitate himself and his friends (with the exception of Lewis, who is too fat).  The rebel of the group, Luke is regularly at odds with Wilbur over who should be in charge.

Coming from a family of real estate agents, Johnny Winter seemed destined for success.  Unfortunately, his only interest seemed to be playing fighting games, and Johnny was so obsessed that he made it his goal to memorize every move for every character in all the Marital Kombat series.  When Johnny was exposed to COSMIC X he fell backwards into a Tapir watering hole and gained the ability to temporarily freeze anything organic with a touch of his hand.  Trained in the shadowy ninja arts and taught by Pi Yu to channel his obsessive nature in constructive ways, Johnny serves as an excellent scout and possesses an uncanny ability to notice things his friends don't.

What a great round, you all did smashing sprites! Thanks for entering.

Now I have to decide on a winner, and it's impossible really, how does one choose amongst these entries, I don't have an answer, it's like a tie between almost four of them. Anyways ...

ben304: once again you deliver and with the background too. Nothing wrong with your colors nor you pixel technique. Ace work once again!

evil: That game reeks of fun! I love the style.

spc: Mighty sprite, love the detail and the calmness about him, silent killer!

misj: Ah, I love the drawings, and love the final sprite (I count it as a valid entry).

ghost: Hehe, I like his wide-stance and his pose the most! btw, I really like your characters in Once upon a crime, especially the pigs, they kill me every time I look at them.

jburger: Wow, niice! Those are how ninjas are supposed to look, the colours are superb. Off-topic, but your game in production looks amazing.

bog: calm and collected, classic ninja, nice entry!

dudeman: You possibly overdid the patterns and lacked shading, nevertheless it reads samurai well-enough! Nice.

culun_dog: reminds of the naruto-mist-hand-gester thing, which means I love it. The smoke and his expression in eyes makes it perfect.

indieboy: What can I say, most original, plus his eyes makes me laugh everytime, like (surprised) "hey what do you mean too fat for a ninja!"

progzmax: again wonderful execution of pixelling, plus I love how you incorporated all of the famous names. My favourite is master gates, I like his shading and anatomy a lot.

Ok, so now I decide a winner. hmmm. I am going to name four to which I narrowed it, but this does not mean the others are not up there, I think so many can win and a different hoster would pick something different here I think, for example, indieboy deserves to win, but so do others.

Ok, I declare a dead tie between: jburger, spacepiratecaine, misj, and progzmax. But because we need someone to host the next competition I will pick spacepiratecaine. If misj would have made that first drawing into his final version I would have probably picked that as the winner.

Hey, guys,

Sorry for the late response - I didn't realize that I would be winning this one - My money was either on Progz or JBurger - I'm stunned, honestly! But thank you. I will be working out an appropriate theme for the next contest and getting it going within the next 24 hours. I've been busy celebrating my anniversary, and hadn't even logged in to the AGS forums for about 2 days (Shortly before this announcement, it'd seem).

Anyway, again sorry about the late response, and I'll get right on top of the next contest very soon.

And I must say, awesome entries everyone else! I really hope that the momentum we've got going this year keeps on keeping on.
