Title: Sprite Jam - 2bit GameBoy Style (14-01-2010) (Winner announced)
Post by: Arboris on Wed 06/01/2010 22:16:13
Well then, lets get started with a new competition.

2bit Gameboy Style

Now the rules are quite simple: Take a existing game you like (or just a character of said game), and convert it to an old school Gameboy game.

*Max dimensions: 160×144 (original Gameboy resolution)
*You'll have to use the 2bit colour scheme I've provided
*It has to be an existing game which wasn't released on the Gameboy
*Bonus points if you do a full 160x144 game mock-up.
*One entry per person, if you have multiple entries please specify which one you'll be using for the compo.

The colour scheme you'll have to use:

And, ofcourse, some trophies for those interested:

Good luck, and have fun.

Not an entry, just for inspiration:

Did this about two years ago for another challenge.

which was for a SJ round some 5 years ago hosted by someone who already posted here. :=

I have an actually pretty dumb question. Do we really have to use that specific palette? There are many other better Gameboy palettes available.
Title: Re: Sprite Jam - 2bit GameBoy Style (14-01-2010)
Post by: Arboris on Thu 07/01/2010 14:51:19
That depends, which one do you want to use? Remember, it has to be a 2bit colour scheme.

Post by: NsMn on Thu 07/01/2010 15:20:25
Well, I found two other palettes on the web that are also often used. For example:

There are also others, like a more beige one and a pure monochrome one, which I prefer, since they all have at least 2 neutral colours like grey, white or black.
The given palette only provides green tones.

Post by: Arboris on Thu 07/01/2010 15:42:36
You're free to use those green tones, but not the beige or the black and white Gameboy pocket colourscheme.
I'm going to keep it old school. (http://www.disgruntleddesigner.com/chrisc/images/IMG_1775sm.jpg)

I actually think the provided palette is radtastic.

Hopefully I didn't mess up too badly and somebody will be able to recognize the game :P

Had a lot of fun with this one.

Anyone recognize it?

Ben,
That was actually my first idea! Couldn't get Jade to look right, though.

Here's mine, I just decided to make two versions with the palettes. The usual one doesn't look that bad after all.... but I like the more grey colours (Green Tyson FTW!)

(http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/4889/gameboysj.png) (http://img705.imageshack.us/i/gameboysj.png/) (http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/gameboysj.png/1/w323.png) (http://g.imageshack.us/img705/gameboysj.png/1/)

It's not very fancy, but... well, it's not very fancy, fullstop.
It doesn't even have referee Mario!

Damn Victor6, that's a great idea. And I know, because I had the same :)

A side note: while this isn't mentioned in the rules, there's no way the gameboy could manage 3D or even pseudo 3D. Most if not all games were tile based and consisted of three color sprites above a single background layer.

Cool, a 3D game in gameboy... wait, this is not 3D, of course its a doom and castle wolfstein style, but it just like my mockup  :P If it was only possible (for me) to burn GB cartridges... I would try out my doom 3 project! (Hum...  ... ... ... ... No?  :-\ )

COULD IT BE??

Select menu lets you select inventory items (as the dialog says) as well as to change characters when possible, (A) moves through dialogs and uses the currently selected item, (B) is used for other context-sensitive things.

I got a little bored at the end so the room isn't as detailed on the right side as the left but it was just for fun.

Post by: Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens on Mon 11/01/2010 05:29:28
The answer is simple:  There is no uncombining or combining of items in the game!  Welcome to the past!

Perhaps Portal of the Orange Box fame?

After drawing Chell, I realized she was quite tall, but I'm still happy. The game would be more like an adventure puzzle, arrows controlling movement/look, A as jump, B as shoot/interact, and select changes portal "color". The Aperture Science logo changes from dark to light, signifying what color portal, either light or dark, the gun will shot.

Great theme and great entries!

Wanted to try a non-stylized, messy/impressionistic approach to see what GameBoy is capable of, thus - "The Longest Journey" overpaint :)

Apperently this game was never ported to GB ;D
(http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww251/FTUltra/SCGB2.png)

Tile based so it could actually run on a gameboy, if anyone would ever take the pain. ;)

A: Build
B: Erase
Arrows: move cursor
Select + A: Building options
Select + Arrows: scroll screen
Start: Menus with statistics and budget

Well, what a great turn-up this competition turned out to be. I'de Like to thank you all for taking the time create some really great game mock ups. This does make it difficult to pick a clear winner tho :) But like the highlander, there can only be one. (feel free to cringe at this bad pun)

(http://arboris.hell-on-earth.net/stuff/SJ%20Gameboy%20GoldTrophy.GIF) 1st Place goes to Victor6 and his Fallout rendition. I'm a big fan of the game, and I really liked your Gameboy rendition.

(http://arboris.hell-on-earth.net/stuff/SJ%20Gameboy%20Silver%20Trophy.GIF) 2nd Place goes to Jakerpot and his Doom mockup. Don't think the poor old gameboy could ever pull that off, but you sure made it look great as a mock up.

(http://arboris.hell-on-earth.net/stuff/SJ%20Gameboy%20Bronze%20Trophy.GIF) 3rd Place Would go either to ProgZmax or Damien. Damien got me at a weakspot tho with his rendition of diablo, a game I enjoyed for quite some years. So based on my bias I'll give third place to Damien

Well, that's it for this competition and thanks again to all those that entered. I hope you guys enjoyed it, because I certainly did. Good luck with the next one Victor6.

Congrats to the winners, congrats to Victor6 for finally earning a well-deserved golden trophy (totally agree with Crimson Wizard here), and specifically at Jakerpot: if you were able to whip up something like this in one day, then you've made an amazing spriting progress since the last time you were here, kudos.
