Title: Sprite Jam 8 - 14 June 2006 - Medieval Inventor: Winner announced!
Post by: buloght on Thu 08/06/2006 13:14:20
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope lots of people enter, I tried designing the rules so it won't take too long to compete in this one.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Topic: Medieval (fantasy) Inventor's Inventory

Design an inventory item that would fit into the inventory of a medieval inventor. He builds all kinds of weird stuff for the townspeople even though some of his work is frowned upon. This can be anything from actual inventions to parts needed for inventions to tools he would have inside his workshop to creatures he might need for contraptions to work to substances/minerals needed to fuel his inventions to heat sources required maybe to lit or heat his inventions (candle) etc, etc.

Rules:
- create an inventory item fitting to the description above
- max colours: 16
- max resolution: 20x20
- item must not be copied nor traced
- will be judged on (technical+idea)/2

The medieval inventor would be lost without this tool...

Any guesses?

Its a wax tablet, the tool of choice when doing written calculations and such.  Pen and ink are relatively permanent.  With this tool, the inventor may rub out the marks of his mistakes and correct them.  Included is his trusty stylus!

The border of this tablet might be marked with various alchemical symbols or reference information, or a nifty design of some sort!  :P

As far as I know, the wax tablet was used more by the Romans, not  in medieval times, but who knows, maybe he reinvented it ;D Anyhoo, It has always been a favourite invention for me, for it combines to areas, simplicity, usefulness, and ingenuity

NAIL ANYTHING!

LOL. Noice.

Also my entry: a wooden Difference Engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Difference_engine).

Hundreds of years ahead of his time, our seminal medieval inventor invents and constructs a wooden difference engine, and in so doing becomes the very first computer engineer (and gives rise to the term).

He applies his genius to establishing a network of wooden difference engines in every cottage, physically connected by cured goat intestines. The intestines form elastic bands and allow the engines to talk to each other - coining the term bandwidth (the width of an intestine is directly proportional to the ammount of communication possible). A new era of commerce emerges.

Unfortunatley he then loses any good standing he aquired in the villagers' collective eyes by utilising this network to proliferate mechanical (as opposed to digital) pornography, and his engines are promptly destroyed.

He still carries one around with him for sentimental value.

Some hundred years ago, an armorer lived in a small town in england. He made a living of making swords and such for the occupying soldiers. But eventually, the soldiers grew tired of his swords. Therefore, they decided that he would be excecuted unless he made a new and better weapon.
Fearing for his life, the armorer came up with a brilliant idea. A small-size catapult shooting small round objects, driven by a rubber band. He called it the "marble-tosser". But as the gun were not very powerful, and the soldiers got ridiculed every time they tried to shoot a marble at the citizens, the armorer were killed, and his invention died with him.

In newer times, secret blueprints of the tosser were found by a Samuel Colt. But instead of "marble-tosser", he called it "gun", as this sounded more manly and dangerous.

My entry,
(http://www.streetcrew.co.za/afflict/dragon.png)
3X
(http://www.streetcrew.co.za/afflict/dragon.png)

The Dragon Whistle was invented by Hagard Von Sewble
during the reign of fire age. The whistle was hand carved
from dragons tooth and contains an red orb that helps
produce a frequency wave that drives the dragon
insane causing it to attack the origin of the sound.
Normaly the dragon tends to kill the person playing
the flute before it killing itself.

Many historians say that this could be the single cause to
the extinction of the dragons!

What's creation without inspiration?
Instinctive urges must be fulfilled if the inventor is to work.

An enchanted, bejeweled screwdriver!Ã,  Every inventor worth his salt (not to mention, every graphic adventure) must have a screwdriver--even if screws haven't been invented yet ^_^
