Title: Sprite Jam: Bartender (closed - Winner announced!)
Post by: Sughly on Tue 02/11/2010 06:08:32
Alrighty, new sprite jam is to concoct a Bartender.

For what bar? Who knows. Maybe a grungy, biker back alley salloon, maybe an old English tavern, maybe a Cantina at Mos Eisley. Either way, we're looking for what your NPC will look like behind that counter serving those beverages. Besides, what's an adventure without a drinking hole?

Rules are pretty much open - any amount of colour and any resolution, so long as it results in a character that can be used in an AGS game. I'll open it up for voting on 16th November, so get your entries before then. Good luck!

Hi. My first attempt at spriting (generally more comfortable with vectors) and a sprite jam, I hope you like it. I wanted to make a pirate bartender with a corkscrew attachment instead of a hook, but couldn't draw a corkscrew without it looking like a mad jumble of sprites, so went with the 'stuck bottle' angle instead. :)

Haha, love it! Very nice work, particularly for your first sprite  ;D

Cheerful to the point of sinister, the BOTender-3000 (can't think of a better pun, sorry). And he is the counter.
Probably won't work that well as a sprite, but what the hey. :)

Haha, awesome. That bottle at the top makes me nervous though, its direction of spill looks very dubious...

One of the most fearsome and greedy pirates of the Caribbean, Captain 'Bad' Bart Anders was not only a fearsome captain but a fierce drunkard, wasting his plunder on card games and bars all over the world.  Unfortunately, Bart's greed caught up to him one day when he attacked a lone Spanish treasure galleon only to discover it was fully manned with the best fighters and gunners in the Spanish Navy.  Suffering numerous injuries including partial vision loss in his good eye from an explosion and his ship taking on water, Bart nevertheless seized two casks of gold from the galleon before retreating to Jamaica where he was forced to abandon his ship in the shoals, leaving him and his crew shipwrecked and with nothing to do with their plunder.

Realizing his captaining days were over, Bart paid carpenters in the city to disassemble his ship and rebuild it on land not far from the city, turning it into a tavern for the 'elite' of the pirate crowd.  Called 'Bart Anders' Folly', the tavern became a huge success, partly due to Bart's intimate knowledge of drinks from around the world, which he gleefully served up to his patrons at prices that soon made him the wealthiest man on the island.

ProgZmax, awesome! Not really into pirates, but that's just great. Your pixel art is always so detailed and precise, simply wonderful.

I was going to post an animated .gif of a bartender, originally courtesy of Hobbes and animation by me for the never published Buccaneer2 -game, but I'm having troubles zooming it in :(

It's a bit faster than in the game, and I made it loop a bit. Oh, and apparently I still had it here. This is no entry though of course since it's old and not designed by me.

Such good entries! Yay! Keep them coming in though people...

I sketched in PS yesterday, will turn to sprite tonight probably....ok, here it is. Not what I wanted (started off as a Cthulu type creature with tentacles), still just to have a "regular" (as in - no imagination) enterance in this jam.  ;D Still, this is good exercise.

Love it, looks great anian. Somehow I don't trust him. The pale face, the blank expression. Looks like a bartender from a David Lynch film or something. But that's a good thing!

I rushed this one up continually having to bang my head against the desk - I have to learn how to use these graphics progs.

As well as looking "Viz" cartoon-ish he smacks of the no nonsense athlete employed in the kind of tavern that has mountains of unswept sawdust on the floor hiding goodness know what. He's in the animation I am most used to with barmen; the "Get Out" stance... I dunno let's call him Bob.

Sadly, thought the original Buccaneer was brilliant, Hobbes disappeared years ago, and the game'll never be finished :(

Armageddon, I'm using Photoshop CS3 with a graphics tablet (an old Wacom Graphire). And thanks! :)

Also, I agree with Sughly about anian's bartender being slightly creepy in a good way. :)

Alrighty, that will just about do it! I'm going to put it down to a vote because democracy is cool and well, I'm a lazy fencesitter. A single vote for your fave will do it methinks.

I'll begin with a vote for ProgZMax, despite loving each and every entry.

That's so, so good luminous! Can't believe I posted 2 minutes before you haha! But of course, for those voting, loominous is very much in it and deserves some votes thrown his way.

EDIT: Seriously, are you making any games atm loominous? Hate to sound ignorant - sorry if you are and everyone knows but me. But that screen is just... I want to play it dammit!

Vote for loominous

It's quirky, original, cute and it looks like a shot from some cool french animated feature. And it's a whole freakin' scene!
When will we finally see a game from you? :)

And well done for entering late again! :D

They're all great entries - really! - but I too must cast my vote for Loominous. It's simply dripping with atmosphere and the little details are fascinating: Look, you can see part of a village beyond the doorway, and there's a map up above the window..look at the old guy's teeth..oh and there's even a carefully positioned board for Mr Pickles to get up onto the bar! *swoons*

I would love to see this as a game or a short feature-length animation!

I haven't voted on a sprite jam before but I think I will vote for anian.  For me, it seems like there is a lot of character in that sprite.  I also liked Progz' entry!

Ilyich, I choose you.

Loominous's scene is nice, but I'm voting on just the bartender, nothing else.

I'd like to have a, erm I mean, I will vote for Ilyich. Since it made me feel like ordering. I do think that character would fit in a game perfectly. Runner-up: ProgZmax, who also gave a great background story. But all are great entries!

I think my vote will go to anian's entry. To echo Tier, the guy has tons of character, and gives this original, mildly creepy impression.

-

Regarding my entry, it's nothing more than a fairly elaborate contribution to this activity, that started as a robot scribble and developed into a scene.

Apart from enjoying developing mockups, I sometimes add environments to counter the usual tiresome comments about lacking usability.

Anyway, thanks for the kind comments!

Though all the entries have their own personality and style. Great turnout for this comp.

Every entry/bartender has it's very own charme!

Really hard voting this time - *think* - all well done arts - *think* - how to choose the right one - *think* -  :-\ ... but ... there are two of them, I'd love to see in a game.

First one - and  getting my vote - is Ilyich for his industrious little fellow  :D ...

... and second one (only a very little step behind) is anian with a servant, who seems to have half of the story written in his face. This expression is sooooo goood - very well made! The only point, which isn't hit exactly, is the theme - because it should have been a bartender.   ;)

Vote to Ilyich, cause that's exactly what I thought of when I saw the theme but this is better executed than my idea would have been.

Hmm ok, maybe the votes have stopped after all haha. Ok, without further ado, the winner is...

Ilyich! Congrats! And a big, big thank you to all of the entrants - really loved all of them, you did me proud!  ;D

Oh and the tally I was - Ilyich (first with 5), loominous (second with 4, or 3 depending on whether theo was voting for him or just praising, not sure heh), and ProgZMax & anian (tied for third with 3). A last big thanks to duncanFX and Bob Bannerman for their entries, both very worthy entrants indeed - look forward to seeing more from both of you.

Alright, show's over, I don't have trophies unfortunately so... get out of here! Scat!
Title: Re: Sprite Jam: Bartender (closed - Winner announced!)
Post by: loominous on Fri 19/11/2010 23:37:10
I suspect one reason for the slow votes is that it's hard to pick a "winner".

It's a bit like ranking your kids: if you have to pick the "best child" you're sure to have a hard time, but if you instead rank them by more objective qualities such as: "intelligence", "punctuality", "athleticism", etc, it gets a bit easier.

So perhaps it would be easier with some voting categories, such as: Idea/Originality, Personality/Character, Technique, etc, along the lines of the Background Blitz categories.

An additional benefit would be that you'd get multiple "winners", as you may not have gotten the most votes in total, but most in the 'Personality/Character' category, which can be potentially encouraging.

Just a thought!

Post by: Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens on Sat 20/11/2010 01:46:40
Since the sprite jam has been traditionally a last winner picks new winner event, I see no reason to try and model it after the background blitz.  Sometimes, keeping things simple is better.  It's not a 'serious' competition and doesn't need to have detailed statistical ratings imho, but then I feel the same way about all the competitions on this board.

Yeah you guys are right, I nearly did do catagories but well, I was too stupid and impatient at the time to figure how to best suit them to this comp. Will do next time! Assuming I host again  :P
Title: Re: Sprite Jam: Bartender (closed - Winner announced!)
Post by: Ilyich on Sat 20/11/2010 10:49:17
Whoa, how did that happen? Although, people often choose the third random thing, when they can't choose between the two things they actually like (in this case ProgZmax's and loominous' entries). :D

Anyway, thank you all! I'll browse through some of the previous Sprite Jams to try and come up with something interesting (I probably won't).

Yay. :)
