Title: SPRITE JAM (RESULTS IN!!!): PORTALS (Door Jam)
Post by: Mandle on Tue 03/02/2015 13:17:32
So, after all the insane fun of Pindorama's last Sprite Jam I feel slightly terrified to be hosting this next one:

But here it is, and the theme is:

(http://i.imgur.com/LP2GqIp.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/MVgYgeF.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/4ylF4QG.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/MVgYgeF.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/LP2GqIp.gif)
(http://i.imgur.com/MVgYgeF.gif)    PORTALS    (http://i.imgur.com/4ylF4QG.gif)
(http://i.imgur.com/4ylF4QG.gif)   (Door Jam)   (http://i.imgur.com/MVgYgeF.gif)
(http://i.imgur.com/LP2GqIp.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/MVgYgeF.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/4ylF4QG.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/MVgYgeF.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/LP2GqIp.gif)

Almost every adventure game has some kind of portals to take your character from one place to the next: They might be simple wooden doors, giant metallic hatches, cracks in cavern walls, fissures in the fabric of reality, or even the orifices of bovines' bodies...

But, whatever they are, they excite us players! We crave to know what is just beyond that next door, just through that too-high-to-reach window, or just under our feet through that mysterious trapdoor...

More often than not these portals prove difficult to open, but once we have finally gained access to them our brave little adventuring hearts go into overdrive, a smile lights up our faces, and we traverse the previously impenetrable barrier, eyes wide open for whatever further wonders await us on the other side...

In short: WE FRIGGIN' LOVE DOORS!!!

Of course though, the term "door" is a bit limiting and that is why I named the theme "Portals" instead.

So yeah: Any damn thing you can go through to get into another area...Be it a door, window, magic mirror, trapdoor, hatch, secret bookcase/fireplace passage, wormhole, porthole, mouse-hole, asshole, rabbit-hole, a hole you smashed through the wall yourself, or even books in a magical library that you can get sucked into (although I doubt anyone would be crazy enough to come up with a game based on that concept)...

Whatever the portal actually is is fine by me...

It's merely an embodiment of our basic desire to see what is awaiting us just beyond our range of vision...

There are a few things I would like to see however which could therefore add to your final score ranking.

So...Let's talk about:

THE BONUSES

Firstly, and briefly, the reason for these bonuses:
I believe that contests such as Sprite Jam are a whole load of fun. But I also believe that they can provide valuable resources for game developers to tap into, especially with something as basic to adventure games as "doors". I really hope that this theme can provide sprites that the community can actually plug into game projects (credited properly of course I also hope)... If you wish for your work to remain exclusively for your own use then this is of course fine, but please say so clearly in your entry's post...

BONUS #1: RESOLUTION
It would be nice if Sprites entered could be based on an available AGS game resolution and this resolution mentioned when the sprite is entered in the contest. Just say anything like 320x240, 640x480, etc. This is to give developers wishing to use the sprite a context to choose from. So if you are doing a normal human-sized door in 640x480 don't make it too huge or too small basically (and yeah I know about scaling and perspective but I doubt anyone is entering with a sprite 300 meters in the distance)-----KA-CHING +5 points!!!

BONUS #2: ANIMATION
It would be wonderful if your sprite could be animated, showing the portal in action. You don't have to of course, but those who go the extra mile will achieve:
KA-CHING +5 points!!! for an opening/closing animation of at least two frames (open view and closed view) and a further:
KA-CHING +5 points!!! for every extra frame of animation added up until a total of five frames (open view, closed view, plus three intermediate frames)
(If anyone goes the additional extra mile and provides unique opening and closing animations they will receive the extra points)
KA-CHING +5 points!!! for providing a viewable gif of the animation, or link to the animation offsite.
KA-CHING +5 points!!! for providing all the animation frames (might want to use the [ /hide] feature here if large/many)

BONUS #2: DEMONSTRATION
This means demonstrating how your sprite looks against an appropriate background in the resolution you previously provided. This is not Background Blitz so the background does not have to be your own work. It merely has to be a good example of how your portal looks/animates against a background of the appropriate resolution:
KA-CHING +5 points!!! for a static image of your portal sprite against a background of appropriate resolution.
KA-CHING +10 points!!! for an animated gif (or link to offsite animation) of your portal sprite against a background of appropriate resolution.

(But please also provide your sprite free from the background as well)

Obviously, the entrants that can provide Resolution, Animation, and Demonstration (R.A.D.) will start with an advantage but the real decider will be:

THE VOTING

This will work the same as it did in the previous Sprite Jam:

Once voting is opened every voter will be asked to provide their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd favorite choices...

If your sprite is chosen by someone for 1st place: KA-CHING +15 points!!!
If your sprite is chosen by someone for 2nd place: KA-CHING +10 points!!!
If your sprite is chosen by someone for 3rd place: KA-CHING +5 points!!!

And now we talk about:

THE TROPHIES

There will be trophies for first, second, and third placers, and souvenirs for all participants...

First Place Second Place Third Place
(http://i.imgur.com/LP2GqIp.gif)     (http://i.imgur.com/MVgYgeF.gif)     (http://i.imgur.com/4ylF4QG.gif)

Trophies created by the incredible I<3Pindorama and, strangely enough, delivered by some scary Russian dude...

And here is the souvenir available to all entrants:

[imgzoom]http://i.imgur.com/n7ifJne.gif[/imgzoom]

Souvenirs also created by the unstoppable I<3Pindorama and, strangely enough, delivered by Mr. freakin' T...

Well, now that you have the framework, don't be a knob!
The success of this contest hinges on your entries!
It would be a real pane if this contest just sat on the windowsill...
So get your foot in the door before it gets JAMMED!!!

LET THE CONTEST BEGIN!!!

VOTING OPEN

So yeah, I'll probably have more time to make this voting stage of the contest a bit more presentable over the weekend, including tallying all the bonus points for each entry and so forth, but for now here are the entries:

I<3PINDORAMA:

I wasn't quite sure how to present this entry as it is an entire multimedia exhibition in itself...Please check the original entry on page three of this thread for the full experience.

So I chose what I thought was the best example of with background and without:

(http://i.imgur.com/MVgYgeF.gif)    RESULTS    (http://i.imgur.com/4ylF4QG.gif)

(http://i.imgur.com/LP2GqIp.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/MVgYgeF.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/4ylF4QG.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/MVgYgeF.gif)(http://i.imgur.com/LP2GqIp.gif)

I have tallied all the scores and so here we go:

JWALT:
RESOLUTION: +5
ANIMATION: +30
DEMONSTRATION: +10

1ST PLACE VOTES: 1 x 15 = 15
2ND PLACE VOTES: 1 x 10 = 10
3RD PLACE VOTES: 1 x 5 = 5

TOTAL: 75

MATTI:
RESOLUTION: +5
ANIMATION: NA
DEMONSTRATION: +5

1ST PLACE VOTES: 1 x 15 = 15
2ND PLACE VOTES: NA
3RD PLACE VOTES: NA

TOTAL: 25

MISJ':
RESOLUTION: +5
ANIMATION: +35
DEMONSTRATION: NA

1ST PLACE VOTES: 1 x 15 = 15
2ND PLACE VOTES: 2 x 10 = 20
3RD PLACE VOTES: 1 x 5 = 5

TOTAL: 80

CASSIEBSG:
RESOLUTION: +5
ANIMATION: +35
DEMONSTRATION: +10 (I'm counting the two open/closed frames as acceptable animation)

1ST PLACE VOTES: 1 x 15 = 15
2ND PLACE VOTES: 1 x 10 = 10
3RD PLACE VOTES: 1 x 5 = 5

TOTAL: 80

I<3PINDORAMA:
RESOLUTION: NA
ANIMATION: NA
DEMONSTRATION: +5

1ST PLACE VOTES: NA
2ND PLACE VOTES: NA
3RD PLACE VOTES: 1 x 5 = 5

TOTAL: 10

So for points total we have a tie between Misj' and Cassiebsg...

In this case I think it's fairest to judge the winner as the entrant with the most points in the voting section:

So:

FIRST PLACE: MISJ'

SECOND PLACE: CASSIEBSG

THIRD PLACE: JWALT

I am sending trophies and souvenirs out to all winners and entrants

The Sprite Jam torch now passes to MISJ'!!!

Thanks for the fun contest all...

I certainly hope you do...

Especially with the obvious advantage for the 3D modeller with the door opening/closing animation bonuses I think you are a natural!!!

Can't wait to see!

It's brilliant. I'd love to play that kind of game or see a film like that. Anyway, a nice theme for a Jam. If only I had any other ideas beside Doraemon taking blood shower... :D

I'm probably getting ahead of myself, here, going through the portal before I know where I'm heading. I have some additional thoughts, and I'll try to update, but I need to figure out, exactly, how to do what I have in mind. I also need to add some more stuff to bring it into compliance with the rules.

If Myst had been made in the Kindle era...

http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/o756/jwalt10705/doorJam1_zpsdu9za5ki.gif

A portal to my Blitz entry?

640x480. An Anim8or model/render. The wood texture is something out of a Carrara Tutorial.

Edit1:

Fired Bryce up and made a gif fly-around.

http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/o756/jwalt10705/gas2_zpsopalmjxa.gif

Don't think either Anim8or or Bryce can "play" a gif file on a surface, so I'll have to do some manual labor for a work around. Trees and shrubs are from Bryce, as are the textures used in gas station.

Edit2:

Got the fly-around into the Kindle:

http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/o756/jwalt10705/specialK1_zpsqxqxzjlm.gif

Now, need to figure out how to make the transition. How to make the portal work...

Edit3: I think I'm done?

I'm going to drop the img tags for the earlier attempts, but I'll leave the links so if you want to look at the WIPs, feel free. Hopefully, that'll knock down the time required to load the page.

Sorry for the delay of delivery ...
I had no money to pay for the fast shipping!

For Real... I'm glad that been to your liking.
Thank you for your confidence!
It is a great honor for me!

The inspiration came from Egypt ... I mean, in the Art History classes at Fine Arts College. Studying the law of frontality I learned about the importance of the eyes and vision in Egyptian culture . You know... they considered this "organ" as the "Window of the Soul" and this aspect had a strong impact on my mind.

In fact the view is a major portal not only to inner the soul, as well so that our soul can "travel" to inside of another souls and worlds. Who not "traveled" after look a work of art, a landscape or the face of another person? And when I say "vision" I'm not restricting the eyes as a exclusive portal to perceive the wonders and mysteries of life. Because even with his eyes closed we can make this journey... and always (or almost) performed at the moment that we enter in the dreams...and there are thousands of ways to close the "eyes"... psychoactive substances, religions, meditation, sex, love, arts, places and play adventures... this make AGS one PORTAL to creation and consume of windows of fantasies and pleasures. ;)

Over the years I have learned (and still learning) that we need see the world through our senses in a deep concept...  we must have "hands" insides of the "eyes" as well as "eyes" in the "fingertips", "tongue", "nose" and fundamentally in the "heart". These are the portals that we need to keep open in order that we can access the infinite that the existence of each thing contains and also stored in our own soul.

In the early days of my youth I had the delight to read an essay that also touched me deeply. This essay was written in 1968 (I think) for a magazine called "EYE". The author was an american beatnik poet, visionary and wild like was Rimbaud (my opinion) ... he eventually sang in a transcendental rock band and they even record some discs and find a relative sucess. The band's name was a reference to the famous book by Aldous Huxley and also the quote from the english poet William Blake that inspired him :

"If the doors of perception are cleansed every thing would Were Appear to man it is the Infinite..."

As I only had this essay in the pages of book and translated to portuguese i had to look in the web ... should be easy, but it wasn't ... but my persistence was rewarded. Curiously behold, I found th text in english on the blog of another brazilian.

The poet's name is James Douglas Morrison... or "Jim"...  :P

Here some songs of the band The Doors that somehow address
the theme of this contest:

My Eyes Have Seen You
http://youtu.be/TTgzWcLB00w
Break On Through
http://youtu.be/WxEdNMPyt6U

Maybe this way to view the life is not compatible with the eyes of many (no one wrong)...
But friends, it's worth the reading :

Spoiler

He sought exposure, and lived the horror of trying to assemble a myth before a billion dull dry ruthless eyes. Leaving his plane, he strode to the wire fence, against the advice of his agents, to touch hands. Standing close to appeal his invitation for admire him worship or weapons. The constant unspoken interior knowledge, that his body was target every public second. Charged murderous awareness of beasts. New nerves of sensation flowered on his neck spine garden. When he looked at you, they said, he stripped back your skull. Naturally. For well wishing admirer smiles easily hide death behind cat teeth. Not paranoia or beyond grave carelessness, but a fine sensuous knowledge of violence in an eternal present.

Cyclops. People who resemble primitive lizards have a jewel within their skull. Called the pineal gland, it is located inside the brain at the juncture of the two hemispheres of cerebellum. In some this third vestigial eye is still sensitive to light.

The eye resists detached analysis. Realize that the eyes actually are two soft globes floating in bone.

The impressions are seeing me.

Ask anyone what sense he would preserve above all others. Most would say sight, forfeiting a million eyes in the body for two in the skull. Blind, we could live and possibly discover wisdom. Without touch, we could turn into hunks of wood.

The eye is a hungry mouth
That feed on the world.

Architect of image worlds

in competition with the real.

There are twin planets
in the skull.

The eye is god. And the world,
for it has its equator.

Pluck out the animal's eye in the dark and set it down before an object, clear and bright, a window against the sky. The outline of this image is engraved on the retina, visible to the naked eye. This excised eye is primitive camera, the retina's visual purple acts as emulsion.

Kühne, following his success with rabbits, was presented the head of a young guillotine victim. The eye was extracted and slit along the equator. The operation was performed in a special red and yellow room. Retina of the left eye offers a sharp but ambiguous image, impossible to define. He spent the next years in search for its meaning, the exact nature of the object, if it was an object.

Windows are eyes of the house. Peer out of your prison body, other peep in. Never a one-way traffic. Seeing always implies the possibility of damaged privacy, for as eyes reveal the huge external world, our own infinite internal spaces are opened for others.

What is the fate the eyes during sleep? They move constantly, like spectators in a theatre.

The pupils dilate during abnormal states. Drugs, madness, drunkenness, paralysis, exhaustion, hypnosis, vertigo, high sexual excitement. The eye finding its ocean after the idea of oceans has ended.

Enkidu was a wild man, an animal among animals. One day a woman exposed her nakedness to him at a watering hole, and he responded. That day he left with her to follow the arts of civilization.

Mates are chosen first by visual appeal. Not odour, rhythm, skin. It is an error to believe that the eye caress a woman. Is a woman constructed out of light or of skin? Her image is never real in the eye, it is engraved on the ends of the fingers.

In the Ars Magna, Great Work, the Alchemist creates the world in his retort.

The eyes are the genitals of perception, and they too have established a tyranny. They have usurped the authority of the other senses. The body becomes a thin awkward stalk to support the eye on its rounds.

Why should the eyes be called windows of soul and key to deepest human communion, and touch denied as mild collisions of flesh.

The body is not the house, it is the inside of the house. The blind copulate, eyes in their skin.
The eye is light at rest.

(Do we create light in the eye? Is light our own, or from the world?)

In Egyptian mythology the eye is symbol of Osiris, or from Horus; and the sun god Ra.

Ptah gave birth to men from his mouth, the gods from his eyes.

City-temple of Brak (3000 B.C.). Discovered thousands of small flat human faces of black and white alabaster, without nose, mouth, ears, but with engraved and carefully painted eyes. Called the Eye Temple: to house these offerings to a divinity.

Oedipus. Reality of her naked breasts. Her body. You have looked upon those you ought never to have looked. Eyes gouged with a broach from the dress of dead Jocasta.

Punish the eyes. Shrivelled breasts of an old woman. He is led from village to village by a young boy. And everywhere they wait on his words.

Tiresias, said to have spent seven years as a woman, came upon Athene in the forest, bathing. She darkened the intruding eyes.

Saul of Tarsus on the Road to Damascus. Blindness elevated him to St. Paul.
Why is blindness holy?

Alchemy offers man an original heroism. The Mani taught that man was created as a helper by the messenger of Supreme God of Light to assist by his life and efforts in gathering the scattered, thereby weakened, atoms of light and lead them upward. For light has shone into the darkness and wasted itself and is in grave danger of being swallowed wholly.

Man can assist in the salvation of light.

The process of transforming base metals into gold is called projection.

In dim light, form is sacrificed for light. In bright light, light is sacrificed for form.

Code of light. The eye is sick. Pluck it out. The doctor removes the eye to save the body. To do this, he must sewer the optic nerve connecting eye with brain. Before anaesthesia, it was often reported that the pass of the scalped created light instead of pain.

Gradually, objects are constructed outside the body.

The eye arises from light, for light. Indifferent organs and surfaces evolve into their unique form. The fish is shaped by water, the bird by air, the worm by earth. The eye is a creature of fire.

Man, I forgot to express ...
The title of the contest was DO CARA-ALHO!

I was noticing now ... the image not only represents a "window" but also refers to "cabinets".
And many boys and girls take as a portal to be avoided... i think...
Except of course if they are fans of Pixel's movies and C.S. Lewis's books! :P

Title: Re: SPRITE JAM (Feb 3 ~ Feb 14, 2015): PORTALS (Door Jam)
Post by: Misj' on Tue 10/02/2015 22:05:24
Portals eh?

Quote from: Mandle on Tue 03/02/2015 13:17:32So yeah: Any damn thing you can go through to get into another area...Be it a door, window, magic mirror, trapdoor, hatch, secret bookcase/fireplace passage, wormhole, porthole, mouse-hole, asshole, rabbit-hole, a hole you smashed through the wall yourself, or even books in a magical library that you can get sucked into (although I doubt anyone would be crazy enough to come up with a game based on that concept)...

Whatever the portal actually is is fine by me...
I'm pretty sure I can break the anything-you-can-go-through-to-get-into-another-area-rule.

QuoteIt's merely an embodiment of our basic desire to see what is awaiting us just beyond our range of vision...
I guess I can bend that rule. Because the player will not go through the portal, and there is also not really anything awaiting us just beyond...

QuoteSo if you are doing a normal human-sized door in 640x480 don't make it too huge or too small basically (and yeah I know about scaling and perspective but I doubt anyone is entering with a sprite 300 meters in the distance)
Ok...so...let's base this on the Curse of Monkey Island. The height of Guybrush is approximately 50% of the screen (~240px). Let's guess that he's 180cm long, that would make a single pixel approximately 0.75cmx0.75cm. My portal is 41 pixels wide so that would correspond to 30-31 cm. Yeah, that would seem about right. Although I guess the actual portal is only like 2 cm wide...but who's counting? :-D

Oh yeah, screen resolution: 640x480. - But I drew it at 5x the final resolution.

QuoteIt would be wonderful if your sprite could be animated, showing the portal in action. You don't have to of course, but those who go the extra mile will achieve:

Ehm...sure. Why not...I mean: it's only a door right? - So I did fifteen very rough, quick, and dirty frames...because I don't have time to do anything proper. The result is usable I guess, but I should really have two to four times that amount of frames (and a lot more preparation and time).

QuoteOnce voting is opened every voter will be asked to provide their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd favorite choices...
I'm getting old...I remember - in the old days - when the SpriteJam was a non-voting contest. I don't know why, but I always enjoyed the Background Blitz having votes, and the SpriteJam having a jury of one (the person who's running the Jam). I miss the old days :)

Anyway...you've read (read: scrolled) through all this, so I guess it's time to show some sprites:

My portal:

and finally:
QuoteBut I also believe that they can provide valuable resources for game developers to tap into, especially with something as basic to adventure games as "doors". I really hope that this theme can provide sprites that the community can actually plug into game projects (credited properly of course I also hope)...
Sorry, no. I'm very particular about my work, and no, you can't have it because it's mine, all mine...sorry.

ROFL Pindo: I love the deceptively tiny package that arrived for me. I had no idea Mr. T worked for FedEx. How the heck did they hide the fact that the job involves flying from him?! Oh wait, they flew all the time in the show and he never saw it coming. Also: Did you actually print out a copy of that invoice and burn it or is that a digital composite? I honsetly cannot tell. Cheers for the souvenir mate! I will add to top post as soon as I can find the time to open all those windows again... (laugh)

Misj': Amazing entry: If you don't already have a job at Disney/Dreamworks maybe you should consider applying?! And yeah, it seems that a lot of my guidelines are a bit useless once the creative geniuses we have around here do their own takes on the theme, but that's fine too and even better if we can be as pleasantly surprised by those new perspectives as we have been so far! As for the voting thing: I don't think it's a rule change as such. I just kind of assumed the the host should choose the method of deciding winners. I prefer voting as it gets the community involved and maybe more people will view the amazing work being done. If future hosts want to use the host-as-judge method again then I'm fine with that. As for you wishing for your work to remain your own property: That's totally cool, and I will add that factor to the first post.

You like it !!!!
Phew ... so it was worth paid those $ 275 bucks.

The inspiration for this souvenir comes from own AGS community and obviously the software that precedes it. This place, as the books of some writers, are literally linked to fantastic universes that drag us... i think that absolutely no active member leaves to stamp in your essence a fascinating character's book. I feel my eyes getting caught in the tentacles of yours artistic works that appears arise from "nothing" (images, words, games) even when it occurs slowly is so captivating and hypnotic that is impossible to escape ... and after all still echoing like the whole process was a single and whipping flash.

The theme "Portal" was a wise and emblematic choice... congratulations, Mandle!
As said Cassie whatever happens here turn our bowser a gate to multiple universes. Particularly i'm enjoying all the works that are emerging, each carries a peculiar point of view that interconnects with other views to form a only VIEW... as rivers flowing into a vast ocean.

...

On the issue of vote i think that is a very constructive discussion and would also like to say my point of view...

I don't see any problem with multiple voting or just a single judge. I particularly prefer multiple that for me is like sharing a delicious cake with everyone rather than prove it alone (see, is just how I feel) but... when i hosted the last contest I took care to read such rules in order to know if the "solitary vote " was  mandatory:

Quote* Sprite Jam: Draw the sprite / sprites that fits the theme and size / color rules of the current event. Normally it's up to the host to decide who the winner is, and the winner will be the host to the next contest.

The text suggests that in the end it is a matter of choice ... and as traditionally it already have been presented in a way, i chose to present another perspective regarding the votes and the score. I didn't with the intention of break or deny  the rules , it was actually something very similar to the work of Misj (congratulations, man!) that is in my opinion a way to embrace the rules and challenges. The rules are "doors" and not "walls", the key is the creativity ... each way of thinking is a different key to be used in the same door, but that will open up to different places with new experiences ... and new experiences are always welcome when they present to us new angles and perspectives. The main rule about this contest leave open all other possibilities of choices (one vote or many) ... somehow in this aspect i consider the SpriteJam the most democratic of contests.

Mandle chose this path of free will and the next winner will also make him/her choices without any kind of  imposition... may be return to the old way, maybe this "new way" happen again or maybe appears a really new and unexpected way? Who knows...  (wtf)

I will put my portal today!  :-D

But I think (particularly) that the great "trip" (when possible) is the turnover of minds/portals...
Despite be sure that I would not repeat the same previous luck... as was the host of the previous contest, I would like to be out of the official competition. My intention is just give to me the honor of participate in this exciting contest. (nod)

Well, how about your entry competing normally but, in the event of a win, the second-placer hosts the next contest? So, in effect, you basically just waive the hosting. I'm sure it has been done before when someone was too busy to host or unable to for other reasons.

Hahahahahahahaha !!!

UNEXPECTEDLY FORMIDABLE !!!!
Cassie ... for me you've won !!!

Can we philosophize about it too much ... just to have an idea, there is a philosophical current (very seriously) who advocates a theory that the act of defecation was one of the elements responsible for the human evolution. They consider that the man did not have much to do at such times and then his imagination flowed without the basic concerns about survival ... well ... to me it makes some sense.

BUT T ... wait a minute ... hey, Cassie ... when was that you had this fantastic idea?  (wtf)

STRAY ANGER IN THE "RAIN"
A wounded storm's song
Like a troglodyte tear in its vertiginous flight on the globe
What ripped the dark sky in this exposed cut that now i see this "rain"?

Far away the sea...
Not so far the pain...
The drunk boat drowning in silence
While the poet sleep away in his season in hell ...

A hashish's taste in my mind...
And I no longer know if still am on what the cat see
Or just your lonely eyes absorving the "cat's feel"

Poor faded bird... "rain"...
Drooping your oneiric lament
In the exit of your eyes... "tears" ...

Tarde uma nuvem rósea lenta e transparente.

Sobre o espaço...
Sonhadora e bela,
Surge no infinito a lua docemente.
Enfeitando a tarde, Qual meiga donzela
que se apressa sonhadoramente,
em anseios d'alma para ficar bela
Grita ao céu e a terra toda a Natureza!
Cala a passarada aos seus tristes queixumes....
E reflete o mar toda a Sua riqueza...
Suave a luz da lua desperta agora
a cruel saudade que ri
e chora!
Evening, a rosea , slowly and transparent cloud.

Over the air ...
dreamy and beautiful,
appears at infinity the moon softly,
Gracing the afternoon like a sweet maiden,
who rushes, dreamily, in yearnings of the soul
to become beautiful.
All the Nature screams to heaven and land !
Birds become silent to his sad moaning
And the sea reflects all his wealth
Softly the moonlight now arouses
a cruel missing that laughs
and cries.

The Bachianas Brasileiras  are a series of nine suites by the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, an exaltation to the nature and brazilian's popular culture in a beatiful ode to Johann Sebastian Bach.

The Villa-Lobos's compositions are recognized and respected by worldwide critics. He has a controversial, "mystical" and exciting biography. At one point of his life Villa-Lobos was participated of the "SEMANA de 22" (Week of 22), a brazilian modern art event that occurred in the city of São Paulo in 1922, from 11 to 18 February at the Municipal Theatre city and was conducted by a group of artists (poets, writers, musicians and painters) who sought to revolutionize the arts in Brazil, "breaking" the European avant-garde to a brazilian language.

It was a real "civil-war" against static and elitist thinking of society of that times  didn't accpet the contemporary art  and this in a Brazilian language was even worse (unfortunately still perpetuated in some Brazilians a "mutt-feelings", which despises everything that is done here in favor of all that is done abroad). There is a very funny episode occurred with Villas-Lobo and his slipper on the day of his presentation in "SEMANA de 22" that generated several boos and verbal abuse of the parterre.

Also Exist a "fictional" movie called "Villa-Lobos a Life of Passion" that show some moments about Villa-Lobos's life. This movie was done  based on reports from friends and Villas itself and also historical documents recorded on audio and video.

ABOUT THE MOVIE

Spoiler

VILLA-LOBOS - a Life of Passion

I caught up with Zelito Viana's film "Villa-Lobos - uma vida de paixão" this July in a small 'art-house' cinema in Ipanema.  If you get the chance to see the film - even in its Portuguese language version - don't miss it.  Anyone who admires the genius of Villa-Lobos (and you are unlikely to be visiting this website if you don't!) will find it absorbing, moving and inspiring,  It's a relatively lengthy film - about 160 minutes - and it packs a lot of incident into this time-span: Viana does well to sustain pace, momentum and balance throughout.

Though knowing about the composer's life and music helps appreciably in following the flow of the film, it is a mark of Viana's courage that he intends the film not for the culturally informed few, but for the broader cinema audience, which he wants to take with him on a "journey through the mind of a creator", to quote his own words.  It is in no sense a musicological film, nor is it meant as a biographical survey; and its professionalism in conveying an understanding of the passions that motivated Villa-Lobos is a million miles away both from the crude, romanticized style of conventional Hollywood biopics, and from the grey approach of film documentaries.

That phrase in the title - "a life of passion" - doesn't just reflect the emotional force of his music, its intensity and exuberance.  It serves to weld together the main strands in the film: namely, his music, his love for Brazil and its people, his commitment to the potential of music as a social and cultural force, and the key personal relationships in his life - particularly, of course, his troubled marriage to Lucília and the happier relationship that he enjoyed with Arminda.  We also witness the passion of VL's dislikes and animosities - for example, his contempt for the 'elites' and their narrow, colonialised ideas of what music should sound like!

The film is structured as a series of interlocking flashbacks and recollections - VL reflecting on his life as he attends a concert in his honour at the Teatro Municipal in Rio.  Memories of events, personalities and melodies evoke scenes and perspectives that move back and forth in time, from his childhood and the rigorous upbringing he received from his father, and his early contacts with street musicians, to his travels in the interior of Brazil, his first successes and failures as a composer, his years in Paris . and so forth, until his final years of illness, which coincided with a surge of international acclaim.  This structural device is used with great perception and works remarkably well - at least for someone who recognizes the connections and allusions.  Everything in the film seems to be founded on solid research (which, according to the director, included hundreds of interviews and meetings with people who knew VL, including Arminda herself).  In one of the more colorful sequences, portraying VL's travels in the sertão of the north-east and in Amazônia, we met a rough, bibulous country fiddler, just as irreverent toward authority as VL, who becomes his companion on an expedition into the rain forest, where VL searches for and hears the fabulous uirapurú bird, inventing a kind of musical shorthand to transcribe its song and the sounds of the forest.  When I saw the film, I couldn't at first place this character; but there he is - Donizetti, the fiddler from the state of Ceará -  identified in Maria Augusta Machado da Silva's excellent mini-biography of Villa-Lobos (Revista do Brasil, no. 1/88, pp. 45-65 - an article that really ought to be published in an English translation).

Viana also gives a good impression of VL during his Paris years, reconstructing the ambiance of Paris - without actually having to incur the expense of filming there! - and reminding us of VL's impatience with European notions of Brazil as an exotic place where people were savage and life was crude.  Of course, Viana is too intelligent to fall into the trap of biopic clichés on the lines of "Hello Villa-Lobos, have you met my friends Varèse and Prokofiev?" (both of whom, by the way, knew VL in Paris and admired him).  Among the many moments of humour in the film, the one that brought the most appreciative response from the cinema audience was a scene where VL, eager to impress his Parisian friends, cooks up a feijoada for them.  The pot lid is lifted to reveal the bubbling, glutinous stew. "Mais, c'est de la merde", cries a horrified Frenchman.  A furious VL leaps at him, yelling "La merde, c'est vous, salop!"

Viana has not flinched from showing the rough edges to VL's personality, the moments of asperity as well as geniality.  It's an honest but unsensationalised 'warts-and-all' portrait, which one feels is exactly what VL would have expected and wanted.  Its impact is reinforced immensely by an outstanding contribution from Antonio Fagundes as the older VL.  Fagundes is one of the best-known faces in Brazilian cinema and TV: his experience and maturity result in an amazing identification with the role, particularly in those painful scenes depicting the difficulties of VL's failed first marriage and the embittered reaction of Lucília to their separation.  But he's also excellent as the lovably gruff composer: for example, talking to American reporters, "Why do you always call me 'Villa-Lobos, the Brazilian composer'? Do you talk about 'Mozart, the Austrian composer' or 'Schumann, the German composer'?"

Marcos Palmeira as the younger VL is almost as good, while Ana Beatriz Nogueira makes Lucília credible and understandable, and Letícia Spiller (another familiar face from the casts of TV novelas) is a model of sympathy, charm and elegance (almost too beautiful) as Arminda.

Viana chooses to use a relatively narrow cross-section of compositions, even allowing for the oceanic proportions of VL's output.  It would have been good to hear more of the songs, as well as extracts from the orchestral Choros. I was delighted that he included part of the wonderful Nonetto - the current absence of this work from the recorded catalogue is scandalous, as is the lack of a good modern recording of the cantata Mandu-Çarará!

My few reservations have to do with the treatment of VL as a professional musician, and with what I thought was a certain lack of insight into both the task of composition and the physical impact of his music.  I didn't feel the film gave a sufficient sense of the sheer hard work that VL invested in his music, nor of the seriousness of his approach to getting things right when it came to performing his own music and that of the composers he admired.  For example, the Paris sequences presented effectively the image of a self-confident, almost brashly gifted personality, but I couldn't really see that person conceiving and putting down on paper the marvellous sequence of major works which VL wrote in that period.  Then again, one of the startling and breath-taking qualities of VL's music is his ability to evoke an entire landscape in a single phrase - when, for example, a melody on the horns seems to define a distant horizon and the strings float over a vast expanse of terrain in the foreground: Choros Nos. 11 and 12 are full of such instances.  One film director who captured that feeling unerringly was the great Glauber Rocha, notably in the opening sequence of his film "Deus e Diabo na Terra do Sol" (God and the Devil in the Land of the Sun), when the immense sertão landscape of Bahia is revealed against the Aria (O canto da nossa terra) from the Bachianas Brasileiras no.2. Viana's film offers nothing comparable with that!

But I would not wish to put a disproportionate emphasis on these few points of criticism.  I enjoyed the film as much as I had hoped, and I would have regretted it bitterly if the short time I spent in Rio de Janeiro had not allowed me to see it.  The film left me with the illusion that I had achieved something which had been denied me in life - namely, that I had met and known Villa-Lobos.  I can't think of any praise higher than that.

- Harold Lewis, August 2000

Solto está o pássaro proibido
Perigo, cuidado, sinal nas ruas
Plumagem clara, brilhante
Ao sol e à  lua transparente
Ao corisco e à  maré
Ao corisco e à  maré

Eu canto o sonho na cama
Do jeito doce e moreno
Eu canto

Pássaro proibido de sonhar
O canto macio, olhos molhados
Sem medo do erro maldito
De ser um pássaro proibido
Mas com o poder de voar
Mas com poder de voar

Eu canto o sonho na cama
Do jeito doce e moreno
Eu canto

Voar até a mais alta árvore
Sem medo, brilhante, iluminado
Cantando o que quer dizer
Perguntando o que quer dizer
Que quer dizer meu cantar
Que quer dizer meu cantar

Eu canto o sonho na cama
Do jeito doce e moreno
Eu canto...

Lá lá lá lá lá....
The forbidden bird is loose...
Danger, caution, "sinal" on the streets -
[Double sense: traffic light / sign / signals / omens]

Plumage clear, bright
The sun and the transparent moon
For the "corisco" and the tide...
For "corisco" and the tide...
[Folk language, means: Lightning]

I sing a dream in the bed
In the sweet and dark sknin way...
I sing

Bird forbidden to dream
The soft song, wet eyes
No fear of the damn error
From being a forbidden bird
But with the power of flight
But with power to fly

I sing the dream in a bed
In the sweet and dark sknin way...
I sing

Fly to the highest tree
No fear, bright, illuminated
Singing what means
Asking what wants to say
What means my singing
What wants say my singing

I sing on dream on bed
In the sweet and dark sknin way...
I sing...

La, La, La, La...

1ª - CASSIE
(http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww258/Cassiebsg/Misc/toilet2_o1.png)

Because Cassie found in the proposed challenges and  emerged  difficulties a new Portal in herself to transport all her creativity, Cassie wanting or not, has once again proposed an unusual work that offers to our minds not only a possibility of laughing at something funny, and weird but also reflect on more serious themes without however discard a good humor.

Even Cassie using a ready model in my opinion this fact in nothing reduces the essence of her work , on contrary, actually makes it even more evident and therein lies her art and that's what I focus.... on the conceptual.

Like the most emblematic Duchamp's artwork, the Cassie's Portal opens up our "eyes" to a place far beyond the concept of a simple toilet.

Congratulations, Cassie your side "impulsive" has an atomic force and a radioactive wealth!  (nod)

Composition: Los Hermanos

Hey look, the weird person who came
Doesn't seem to find a place
In the body in which God incarnated hers/him
Stumbling in every block
And Doesn't measure the force that already has
Shown ahead a heart
That doesn't shared with anyone

Ever Has everything in his/her hands
But carries the cross just beyond
Carving like a artisan
The image of a good person

Look there, who's asking approval
Who Don't even know where to go
If someone doesn't indicate the direction
Venturing never meet yourself
Will ever understand?
That (s)he always fleeing of a place
Hiding the hatred

Maybe if he never try
To Live the TV-GUY
That wins the fight without sweating
And receive applause without wanting

It's part of this game
Say to everyone
That only know the own bad portion

It's simple like this...
When wither the own chest
To pretend that not exist competition
It's the solution for those that don't want
Lose what already have
And closes the hand for what is to come...
There...

The access is involuntary, because for me the true portal are your eyes ...
as well as are "portals" the eyes of everyone in "here".

Unfortunately i will not be able to see your victory (I cheer for it) because after this vote
I will be away from this community an indefinite period... so ... I created "portals (here and
in other threads) to be "absorbed" and not to "absorb" ... I want my "portals" registered in
the "mind" of each hungry "eyes"... in the memory (water salt... tears or sea)... "close" to
your  joys, sorrows, loves, angers ... everything that is important (bright or explosive)
everything is indifferent (misty or translucent) on you... but there are ... raining in the
same place where your emotions, feelings fall asleep or wake up.

Irmã, forte abraço e obrigado pela experiência de conhecê-la.
Penso que nosso encontro "aqui" não foi casual...
Saúde e alegrias pra você e a família.

I think that was Amy that reminded the Hopper's artworks when she saw your Gas Station ... interesting and I had not noticed this point despite having absorbed the feeling of loneliness and emptiness that your work takes us.

Now in this contest you overcomes the loneliness of a gas station ... is a whole creative universe and art making...
the construction (or deconstruction?) of an idea ...a "transubstantiation" to another "unreal universe" and the funny thing is
that this "place" it "swallowed" to another immaterial space: the human mind. And "here I am" ...commenting your work that
in my opinion are like memories from/to the infinite ... and exiting from the Hopper's artwork you take us  to Möbius, Carroll
and Escher.  ;)

Jwalt... where you send me with YOUR art
I believe not have more return ... will always be ahead!
THANKS A LOT, MAN!

Please when you have a time watch this ...
