Title: The AGS Chess competition. Status: 1/14 final
Post by: Vel on Sat 28/02/2004 13:45:30
Okay, so, I've asked m0ds's permission for this, and so I post a thread in this forum.
The AGS chess competition will start on March 12th, when draw will be cast. In order to enter the competition you should do two things:
a)reply to this thread to sign in
and b)Download the program available from www.worldchessnetwork.com - it will be used for the competition.
Rules:
The games will be 60 minutes long, that means 30 minutes for each to think. Do not swap between programs during the game, because WCN considers it as cheating. Once the draw is cast, your partner and you should agree on a time and date to play the game of chess within one week. WCn decides who is playing with black and who - with white. Good luck to all participating!

I just downloaded and used the progam...it's saying I only have 15 days until I need to pay for membership. Will it stop working after fifteen days, and if it does, I'm sure we can find better chess programs out there, I know I've found some really decent free ones in the past.

yes worldchessnetwork, won't work after 15 days. I say we use POGO.COM!
Vel should just get java installed ;)

You can also play chess bytheway at http://www.gamecolony.com
You need to download an application, and register.

As I said before, I cannot install Java - the three times I tired made my computer crash. What I have thought of is a solution - I say partners decide what they use for their game.

That works...however, now I have another nagging question. Shouldn't we switch between black and white, so it's not random? So if I play the first person using white, next game I play, I should be playing black.

Here's my solution to this problem, Mills: if you and your partner both agree who is playing black and who white - its ok with me, but if you do not - it'll have to be random. Fair, no?

You should set up a separate AGS Speed Chess division for those of us who get bored waiting for other players to make in a move in a 60 minute game.  I'd love to play chess against other AGSers.  I used to be on a chess team in school, and we kicked serious butt at the competitions.  However, it's been so long, I probably suck now.

Not really. While this fixes my problem of not alternating, if I meet someone else who wishes to do the same thing, and we both should be playing white, for example, it ruins exactly what we're trying to do.

I feel, if anything, we should specify exactly who will be what color. I may be wonderfully adept playing white, but maybe I'm not so good with black. By alternating, it allows my strengths and also my weaknesses to come out. Which ensures a more accurate result for the competition. If this weren't a competition, it wouldn't really matter, but it is, and it matters to me. Also, we're already compromising the competitions results, by only playing one game (instead of 2 out of 3; or 3 out of 5), so it shouldn't be too much of a stretch to assign people to play certain colors.

I say, have it this way... 2 players are randomly chosen, to play against eachother, then they play 2 games of 30min total (15min each), so you can play with black, and white.

Another thing bytheway... what happens when we play remise?

Using this system, how do you determine which player wins if both win one match?

Then they'll play a 3rd match to decide the winner. And if they play remise in the 3rd match, a 4th will be played. ;)

OK, so it's minimi's system,but with a few corrections:
2 out of 3, 20 mins each(40 total)
remise: 10 mins each(20 total), until someone wins.

puh-leeeez. Some people are so insensitive.

I, on the other hand, wish to have NOTHING to do with chess - which means I have NO reason for posting, other than general waffle. That and I'm bored.....

But in the next round there will be 7 players... What are you going to do?

Or will you count like in the profissional tornaments, with everyone playing against all and suming one point per victory and 1/2 per draw?

Sorry if this has been explained before...

I sent a message to Panda a couple of days ago, and he's on now...this is just to kind of catch his interest. Go on #ags if you want to contact...though, this might be dated by the time you actually read this, but hopefully I'll be on. That, or PM me.

I'm still here!
I have troubles with my internet connection at home, that's why I'm so darn late to everything.

I've contacted Minimi, hopefully we can play anyway.
Otherwise I will have to accept a walkover.

I won't be able to play the match against Hotspot, for various personal reasons, so it's another walkover victory. I've send him a message to inform him of this, but he hasn't replied yet...
