There we go then, the new Tune Contest!

I just hope that this hasn't been done for a while... :-/

You know the scene. You've run up and down, killed dozens of enemies, eliminated almost everyone, except for the very last bad guy. The monster. The atraucity!

And your job as a composer, is to score a track about that Final Bad Guy! Whatever style, whatever genre, whatever format from AV, AIF, MP3, OGG, MID. whatever length.

It's up to you if you want to compose the entrance to the scene, where the Final Bad Guy gets presented, or the action flick of that. Feel free to explain the situation, depict the Final Bad Guy to us, explain how he's killed the heroes parents, taken over the world, is a scientific experiment gone wrong and so on... Let your imagination run wild, but most importantly...

The Destroyer of Worlds has arrived on Earth. Despite all the heroes who challenge him, he cannot be stopped. Imagine that every warmer, "nicer" bit of the song is another of Earth's heroes trying to bring down the massive intergalactic planet devourer. But no matter how they try, they are eventually killed and our little blue-green planet is obliterated and the Destroyer of Worlds moves on to yet another celestial object to consume.

I think there was a Marvel villain that ate planets and fought the Fantastic Four, but I cannot remember his name...

I hope you guys like it! :D

EDIT: Oh, there we go, he was called Galactus!

The mood in that song is very well done. I can imagine everything very well and it feels very mighty and oppressive.
The little riff at 0:57 reminded me a lot of A New Level by Pantera.
But I think that your songs would sound a lot better if you would just use a normal midi format. The synthesized Guitar Pro 5 guitars sound strange. Midi songs sound also a lot more videogamelike in my opinion.  ;)


By the way, my song is pretty much finished, but I am still a bit unsure if I add a little bit or not. It drives me insane.

MMMorshew, thanks a lot for the kind words :).

I kind of like the GP 5 RSE instruments in favour of the midi ones in heavy metal because it has more... well... heaviness! I'm going for all-out hairy balls to the wall and the midi guitars sound like small, squishy grapes against a fluffy bunny; not exactly what I need.

And yes, that riff is reminiscent of A New Level, mostly because of the way it starts and because of the fact that it abuses kind of the same note.

As can be seen, while sounding different, they are constructed in a similar, yet different fashion, thus being fundamentally not the same, while retaining the identical feeling...

I love midis, so I made one.  ;)
I didn`t want to make it sound extremely creepy or aggressive, but rather sneaky. The bad guy I imagined was always calm and polite, which you are supposed to hear in the calm part in the middle of the song, but whenever you turn your back he attacks you and reveals his true nature, which you can hear at the second half.

Also, the song is full of pizzicato strings, mainly because I thought that this instrument fits the melodies and the mood of the song very well.  ;)
I like how it turned out. Let me hear some critics.  ;)

Well, it kind of feels too repetitive to me... For the two minutes, you kind of use the same formula, you just add in more stuff. Other than that, I like hearing cymbals and hi-hats on drums, but I guess that would put too much accent on percussion, and it would ruin the overall thievery and mischievous  feeling.

But honestly, it's a very good song in its own right, and I'm just being nitpicky 'cos you wanted some critics :D.

Well, here's my entry.  I was inspired by ShiverMeSideways' entry to the last tune contest (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=40723.0), where he tried his hand at chamber music.  Accordingly, this is the first time I've ever tried my hand at symphonic rock, so please don't laugh too hard. :P  Unfortunately, it turned out more like a simplistic classical piece with too much brass, poor orchestration, some ninth chords and a drumbeat.  Oh well...here goes anyway:

I don't have any particular "final bad guy" in mind, but I would imagine that this would fit the final battle with an evil mastermind in some sort of spy game.  The middle section (starts out with mostly drums) is supposed to represent the actual fighting.  At the very end, where the music pauses on the "nice" Bb major chord, the protagonist thinks he has won, and the battle is over.  But as he exits stage right, you hear the final chords, and you see a faint sign of life from the bad guy, ensuring that he is alive to fight another day and pad the game publisher's pockets with another surefire hit sequel.

Great entry, Viking! :) It kind of reminds me of Team Fortress 2 and that type of music... It could work in a whacky sort of final confrontation. While not being particularly scary, it has a lot of charm.

Viking, this is so awesome. Not very boss-like actually, but it would fit for a good atmospheric platformer. It reminds me that scene from Art Of Theft where Trilby has to escape the Company's headquarters.

The good things about public voting are that it lets the people have a voice, and it dilutes the biases of the previous winner.  The bad things are that sometimes people who are voting do not have sufficient discernment to make a knowledgeable choice, and that sometimes not enough people vote to make it a truly democratic process.  (I'm glad I'm not a politician. ;) )  Pick your poison!

Nikolas: your track is pretty awesome, man! It sounds like it could be on the Painkiller soundtrack! :D I didn't know you were into hard rock... To be honest, I'd always thought that you were very classical-oriented and didn't care that much for metal and the like. Dunno why, maybe 'cos I (and not only I) consider you one of the best composers on AGS.

Phemar: Daaaamn, man, that's some wicked-ass metal. It sounds like it could work for some Melodic Death band... It kind of reminds me of Children of Bodom. The only complaint I have is that it's not mixed... The volume levels thus make small crackling sounds and there's one point where there's just too much bass (around 0:56-1:00). I would recommend doing what I do: record each instrument separately with Audacity, then change the volume levels on the tracks. I usually record everything very loud and then mix down so that you can actually turn up the volumes if you want to listen louder and speakers don't explode. That minor criticism aside, you're really giving me a run for my money in the heavy metal department! :D

Regarding voting or not-voting, I'm ok with both, but I believe that not-voting will end the competition quicker :P. Also, if we're going with voting, all the participants should also vote (of course, not for themselves) lest we run into the brick wall that is too few votes. I'll definitely use the power of democracy when the voting phase begins ;).

Shiver: Thanks ^_^. I'm into a lot of thing, although I am rather classically oriented in general. I (was) am classically trained, and this shows most of the times.

About voting: TBH I do prefer it, but the problem is that usually fewer voters than participants seem to appear afterwards... In the CGEmpire days it was the voting part that was most confusing, but also most rewarding. I had come up with a very ellaborate system of points to 'award' voters (an extra vote for those members who would vote), and also a rule which would preclude participants voting for their entry, and 2 votes for each member to use as they seemed fit and all these stuff.

All these seem uneccessary in this competition, but voting it is, I think! either way, voting will run for a couple of days only, not a too long time... ;)

Let's see if anyone else comes up with an entry before tomorrow and then we'll start the voting process... ;)

Also, thanks for all the interest and the entries to this comp! It has been, thus far, a great competition!

My vote goes to Phemar, because although the other entries are certainly interesting and interpret the theme quite liberally, none of them I'd use for one of my boss fights. I'm tackling this from a game designer's perspective. My final boss wouldn't be sneaky or communist, he'd be fierce and mean. I would've voted for Nikolas, 'cos his song actually sounds like boss fight music from the game Painkiller, but I can't, 'cos he made the thread. So yeah, definitely Phemar.

Thanks for the kind words about my track! Yea I've thought of recording each track separately, and at one point even recording each drum separately, but at the end of the day I'm just waaaaay too lazy!! Regarding your track, I like the way it's constructed, and it has a very cool old school metal sound, which I dig because it's the kind of music I grew up listening to. The intro riff reminded me a bit of No Leaf Clover by Metallica, and I thought maybe the midi parts sounded a bit too midi at times, but besides that I think it's a really cool song! Congrats.

Cool track, reminded me of the kind of music I'd hear during a level of doom. Ambient, starts off slow with more instruments coming in later. Nice work on the old school video game sound.

This track is quite awesome, I won't lie. I can definitely see it working as the final track in an adventure game during the laast puzzle. I love the suspense you've built while at the same staying ambient!

@Dualnames
Wow this piece is ambient. I can see it working in an adventure game inside a cave or something. I'm not quite sure if it's suited for a final boss, but otherwise good work.

@Nikolas
Instant flashbacks to the arcade! I can see this working in some fighter game like Mortal Kombat or something. I love the whole pump-up vibe you've built. Really action-packed and full of life!

@Phemar
Holy crap... I never thought I'd encounter something as awesome as this. You're probably the best musician/composer I've ever heard. Keep up the good work!!

I really love the sound of the accordion so I quite liked your track. Though as I said to others I'm not quite sure if it works as final boss  music. Still cool, although it did feel a little too 'punctuated' at times with all the staccato notes going on.

@Daremes
Nice short tune. I wouldn't quite put as a final boss tune in a game, but I can see it working for a cute little platformer or something. Nice work.

Now... To make a decision! I seem to be in a toss up between ShiverMeSideways and Viking...

But I think I'll go with ... ShiverMeSideways!

And my vote goes to...MMMorshew. It's killer old-school MIDI tune, it's catchy and it suits the mood.
It wasn't easy to choose, because I really liked "Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Trall" by Dualnames. It's my cup of tea but it doesn't work for final bad guy situation. I would vote for Nikolas, he's pro, it's catchy, its production value beats the others and I like electro-blast around 0:30, but since he's announcer of this contest I don't vote for him. Actually, Viking's tune is brilliant and sophisticated and I don't even know why I didn't vote for him!?

I totally forgot about this little contest.

Viking: A really great song that has a special charme that I can`t describe... however, it`s awesome. The bad guy with such a theme could fit into a less serious jump`n run game. It reminded me of those old, wonderful N64 games for some reason, like Banjo Kazooie or Conker. It could belong in those games in my opinion.

Dualnames: You managed to create a very dark and unpleasant athmosphere with that song that could belong right into some creepy horror game. But to be honest, it doesn`t really sound like the scenario that you explained. It made me think more of a dark, ancient tomb where you have to solve creepy puzzles as Indiana Jones. But still, it gets the job very well done as an ambient tune.

Nikolas: Made me think of action packed, side scrolling SNES arcade games where you have to blow up gigantic robot bosses and blast all kinds of enemies that attack you from every possible angle. Very very awesome, even if the main riff repeats too much in my opinion. But that normally doesn`t bother me at all in video game music.

Phemar: I love all kinds of metal, so I enjoyed this just as much as ShiverMeSideways` song. It has very interesting and great melodie starting the first time at 00:37. The drums that come in at the second time it appears after the little breakdown makes it even more awesome. Great song, very well done. But it sounds just like a normal metal song (a very good one of course, I would love to hear it with real instruments), not something that I would expect in a videogame. But that`s probably just me.

Le Woltaire: This song really caught my attention. It has a very special charme and the mood in that song is great, it certainly made me want to fight a baguette-throwing french bad guy. But I would have loved to hear a faster, danceable and more vivid part  somewhere in the song, for example when the fight could begin.

Daremer: Yes, THAT could very well be the the song for a goofy boss. I imagined a crazy scientist in a jump`n run game that jumps and dances around in madness and wants you dead.
Also, at some parts it made me think of some electronic sounding pop songs that you hear on the radio (especially when the synthesizer tune appeared), there was just a vocalized woman voice missing. Very well done, but it was a bit too short for me.

And my vote goes to VIKING, because the song has such a unique charme that appealed to me and sounded like it could really belong into a big, commercial game.
It was very hard to choose, there were so many great songs. If I would be able to pick more than one favorite, I would do it.

Shimermesideways: A very nice entry indeed! Rather influenced by slightly older time aesthetics, maybe due to your lack of equipment, but the guitar rocks! The whole track is very complete (which is not something you get with every entry in general). Well done!

MMMorshew: This is an old fashion track, which works very well I think. I could envision very easily various scenes, various bad guy bosses.

Viking: Eric, this entry is very well thought out I think. There are some great orchestration elements there (and you know it! ;)). BTW, I found your entry to be in slightly lower volume, but I'm at home and couldn't have a look at the waveform. Other than that I think it works very well in this competition, with a slightly twisted sense, but very nervous, anxious sense!

Dualnames: James, you did very well! For someone who is tackling everything himself in his games this is great! Especially considering how you started out and how you moved further. I will agree with others that it seems a little out of place in terms of fitting the theme of the competition. It's more scarey, and adventurous and travelling into a dark cave rather than a bad guy ending of a game. Still a very cool entry.

Phemar: Very cool (bad ass) track! It should work well in every occasion and most bad guys. Fast paced, full of adrenaline!

Le Woltaire: This is VERY original! In the idea that this is for a bad guy in a game! And it works so well, if you have in mind veyr specific situation. It's well created I think, while it depicts a very slight 'spanish/mid US' sentiment.

Daremer: VERY cool track! I think that the production value in this is slightly higher than the rest of the entries, but I also feel that it doesn't fit the theme of the game fully. It's to 'go happy' tune, despite the heavy electronic sounding instruments.

My vote goes to Shimermesideways for his great entry! Well done mate!
