Title: tune contest (21.feb - 3.mar) Nordic breeze
Post by: bartillier on Wed 21/02/2007 17:37:00
Yey i won the previous tune contest!

so here's a new one!

Ok, so the objective is to make a theme song or an ambient background for a VIKING SCIENTIST (who has all the brain of a scientist and a rich viking cultural background :D )

Hes a cynical character, much like maybe Rincewind, aaaand he's temporarily homeless, coooooos his house collapsed all on it's own, so he's trying to find out what did this. He also traveles a lot, and collects pocket lint.Ã,

Do whatever you want, maybe something more serious, or goofy, real instruments or all on a computer (nordic melodies, war drumms, electro, whatever ), and HAVE FUN!

the only rule is the entries must be AT LEAST 45seconds LONG

(I'll post a picture of him, and some trophies a wee bit later)

Well that's a quite unusual subject, you sure got some imagination ;)

Since I'm from Sweden and feel "the Nordic Breeze" as we speak, I can not let this pass, in other words, count me in  :)

Hi

I've made two entries, both containing samples from real Old Norse instruments:
http://www.nielshs.dk/junk/sadviking.mp3
and
http://www.nielshs.dk/junk/inferno.mp3

The first one is the sad theme that plays while the scientist is moarning over his collapsed house.
The other one is played when he finds out who did it and goes berserk!

The second one is only 40 seconds long, so I guess the first one will be my real entry. I must admit that I like the second tune the most...

NOTE: I'm from Denmark, so I also feel the Nordic Breeze right now. There snow everywhere!

... woah...
I'm not joking, that first track nearly had me in tears... especially in the final third with that other instrument (don't know what it was).  Christ, if I ever need to make myslef cry I'll look that up again.

The second track was pretty neat too.

REALLY COOL entries he-man, although I could hear that it was more of a quicky job, or is that the point of these tune contests :) btw I'm not criticising you in a negative way, i think it's better to do make more stuff, faster, so we can have more fun and more toon contests :D and i can't wait to hear some more entries!

this tune contest idea is really great, haven't spotted it on any other forum, and it can be really fun if pepole are just a little bit serious and want to win as well as share ideas with others

In this one the scientist-viking lost his house and goes travelling.
He goes and sees southern Europe (around the middle of the song), as you can hear.
But everything comes to an end so he goes back to his own country to build himself a new house and lives happily ever after. With a beautiful viking-wife and LOTS of viking-babies ofcourse. Which goes without saying. Obviously.

Last minute entry!

War music! (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/vikingwar.mid)

The Vikings are going into an epic battle - raping, pillaging etc.

Let's wish them luck :D

okay i've listened to all of the submitions, and here are the winners:

3. place: PEDER JOHNSEN

2. place: ZOR

1. place: HE-MAN
-------------------------

explanations:

Peder Johnsen: While your composition was beautiful, it lacked that viking theme. Don't get me wrong i played it several times and it's really nice, but it's just not viking nice.

Zor: Your song has a really nice old-school adventure gaming goofyness to it, and a nice viking theme, it's only fault (in my opinion) is that it really loses on soul because you didn't make it real enough as far as the instruments go. War drums should be real war drums, (at least timpani) and the piano just doesn't go with the whole viking scene, otherwise if you would have only chosen some other instruments and worked on the details it would have probably taken first place

he-man: It kinda sucks, cos you won the last contest :D but your song in it's simplicity hit the spot more than others, with the right choice of instruments and a nice simple more likely viking melody your song takes first place. ...Anyway grats, you can start the new tune contest :)

Oh yeah forget about me.  >:(
I know it's not very vikingy but you could at least have given an explanation...

Oh well, I'll just join the next one.

Yeah, I was close not to post it as I felt it lacked the viking theme myself, I kept it waiting to long!
I was gonna add more to it but ended up with only that.

Thanks for the third anyway! :P.

And congrats to He-Man!
Your entry was great!

I didn't participate in this one because all these entries were ten time better than anything I could come up with, but He-Man, your's definately stood out, for me.  Well done for winning.
