Title: Voice acting competition, deadline September 4:th
Post by: Andail on Tue 30/08/2005 09:32:53
The rules are easy. Record this text using only your own voice. The winner will be decided by vote.

This round's text is a transcript from the fellowship of the rings, the movie.
You only read the dialogue (double brackets), not the descriptions.
This may be a very difficult part to read (although I avoided Gandalf to make it a bit easier) but just make your own interpretation and it'll be fine!

Transcript

<<Gimli: I have taken my worst wound at this parting, having looked my last upon that which is fairest. Haugh, henceforth I will call nothing fair unless it be her gift to me.>>

<<Legolas: What was it?>>

<<Gimli: I asked her for one hair from her golden head. She gave me three.>>

<Legolas smiles.>

<The Fellowship passes out onto a larger branch of the Anduin beneath sheer cliffs. The Uruk-Hai march along through the forest as the three boats carrying the Fellowship float along.>

<It is getting dark. The Fellowship rests on a small island. Boromir looks out from behind a large rock, silvery webs of lights reverberating from the water. He looks worriedly at a log floating in the river. Small hands clutch it, and the top of a head is barely visible over the log‘s edge, where eyes glint softly.>

<<Aragorn: Gollum. He has tracked us since Moria.>>

<<Voice: Golllllluum…>>

<<Aragorn: I had hoped we would lose him on the river. But he's too clever a waterman.>>

<<Boromir: And if he alerts the enemy to our whereabouts it will make the crossing even more dangerous.>>

<Frodo hears them. He looks worried.>

<<Sam: <sitting beside him> Have some food, Mr. Frodo.>>

<<Frodo: No, Sam.>>

<<Sam: You haven't eaten anything all day. You're not sleeping, either. Don't think I haven't noticed. Mr. Frodo…>>

<<Frodo: I'm all right.>>

<<Sam: But you're not! I'm here to help you. I promised Gandalf that I would.>>

The deadline is one week. Present your recordings with .ogg or .mp3.

Are you allowed to modify your voice with strange effects or should it all be "as is"?

as is i'd guess. Seeing as it's voice acting not modding :/

I'm inclined to agree. See it more like an improv theatre, skip the effects and reverbs and stuff

Also, the point isn't necessarily to impersonate the actors playing these characters, but to make a credible interpretation, what it could have sounded like.

Hehe what a coincidence, the fellowship movie was just shown on TV here yesterday night, I only watched the first hour of it though.

Since I won't be entering I'll shut up now. :=

Nice competition BTW.

I logged in to my ancient home page just to get somewhere to put this file... Let's hope it works and all though. They say these things are shitty nowadays.

(I hear it's impossible to do direct linking from there nowadays, so there's a subpage)

I did, I hope, a slightly own take on it 8^)

If not, I'm in a dead end again :)
hmm. go to the bottom of the page... click something, I'm having trouble finding out what, but...

Newest edit: go to the bottom and select the green free -box. then go to the bottom of the appearing window... If it don't say Download: LoftheR.mp3 you either must wait or try again... That's how I got it working

You have to click the "free" button, and then check the bottom of the screen to see if you can download it.

I felt worst about butchering Rhys-Davis' role.
I have to admit I would've passed on this were it not for my enthusiastic vote for the contest.
I guess everybody has to get practice in somehow.

Linkage (http://www.geocities.com/fishlight/lrings.mp3)
Compression from HQ wav to Medium Ogg to Low MP3 did some funny/tinny things.

The mid-eastern theme of yours was pretty damned cool.  So, deadline's today. [Edit: Re-read rules and noted keyword "vote"]

I was fairly embarassed by mine, but it was an awesome learning experience both delivery-wise and logistically.

Since the style is open to interpretation (i.e. doesn't necessarily have to sound like characters from the LOTR movie), I vote rharpe.  I liked much of Haddas's but after the impressive beginning lines it began to feel wooden.  rharpe actually kept up character personality and delivery throughout.

One suggestion, in deferrence to those for whom English is a second language, might I suggest everyone have the option to translate the dialogue and deliver it in their own language?  After all, we're going for pauses, tones and delivery more than understanding the meaning.

But my VOTE goes to: PyroMonkey
P.S:
I loved your Sam, Rharpe :)

Thanks for your contributions :)

Overall, I'm impressed by the acting skills displayed, but less impressed by the recording quality. Too many background sounds, breath-noises and generally low volume sometimes ruined otherwise excellent readings.

Well, this was the first round, and people are training. Also, the transcription was a very hard one, considering many people will have the movie actors in mind when reading it. Hopefully the winner of this round will pick a better text :)

Also, where was Cameron? LGM? I would like to see more people who deal with recording on regular basis.

Two tips for next round:
* Avoid disturbances at all cost - retake and retake until the recording is crisp clean. It sucks to listen to a great voice when you get these explosions every time they read out "p" or "t", or hear some distant diffuse noise.
Either use a breath filter (a piece of cloth or whatever in front of the mike) or just speak beside/over it.
* Speak up! Not only will people hear you better (naturally), your voice will automatically gain more tone and warmth, more nuances, more resonance.

Well, my vote would go to Rharpe, even though he sounded a bit too self-conscious (not natural enough) at times, and read a bit too slow.
I can honestly say that I enjoyed listening to all of you, very well done :)

Rharpe, I thought I cought a spite of that southern state accent there ;) Kansas eh...

Myself I used ACID Pro 4,0 program and my Philips singing mike, but recording as loud as I could without making the voice break, and then converting it out as loud as possible again, I still couldn't make it louder... these have always been difficult, you know. Too quiet and then a little hiss here and there will make the voice break.

Whatsoever, if I was to vote, I'd place my on PyroMonkey. As far as I recall he was the best... after me of course!!!

I enjoyed them all, but I have to vote for Yakspit. for some reason it appealed to me. nevermind the quality.

Andail: thanks for picking me! I am very self-conscious, (I guess I wasn't able to hide it.) Oh well, like I said, it's my first voice-over entry I've ever done.

Tuomas: I'm not from Kansas, but I've lived there long enough to aquire a southern note. :)

Mozesh: Thanks for commenting on my Sam voice. I was aiming for a doofus tone.

Yakspit: Thanks for your vote as well! I wish I could have made a greater distinction between Boromir and Sam's voices... they seemed too close in my opinion, (same with Aragorn and Frodo.)

Everyone: I'll try to come up with something unique for the next Voice acting competition.
