The Nursery
(I won't post any examples/references, because...)
I want to keep the topic fairly open. So, the nursery in question could be designated for anyone or anything, any time period or maybe just themed, sinister or frilly...
Therefore, there are no special rules or limitations. Draw your BG in any style and resolution you're comfortable with.
Hope, some of you will have fun with this!
wohoo :) , I finally have free time so im going to try to get involved in this :) , are 3d rendered backgrounds ok?(Im a Blender man) Ive seen them entered in previous bb's but I would rather check before I start.
okay. I'm gonna have a go at something for this :-)
I might do this. I've got a nice idea in my head which I'd love to draw.
It's just too bad I'm terrible at backgrounds. Still, it's worth a shot. :-D
Cool! I'll give it a shot :)
Great to see some interest!
@Danvzare, it's always worth a shot! And to really stretch this metaphor. The more you shoot, the better the aim.
@Frikker, as I wrote in the description, no limitations. So, anything goes!
A new BG Blitz! Nice. Maybe I can cook something up for this theme, though it doesn't immediately speak to me...
Oh geez...
I've started drawing something for this that I might have to show to a shrink at some future point...
Obsessed with it now so I will complete it tomorrow when I should be really working on other projects...
But...It's taken root now so it must be born...
IT HAS BEEN BORN!!!
I'm gonna steal the obvious title:
"THE NURSERY"
I'm hiding it as it has a bit of a shock-level involved:
Spoiler
(http://i63.tinypic.com/rrp47o.png)
And, believe me, you're not the only one saying "OMG MANDLE WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!"...I'm saying that to myself as I look at my abomination...
(A bit pressed for time so please excuse the pixel issues...I might correct before the deadline if time allows)
Amazing, Mandle! This is gross and charming at the same time.
Wow Mandle... that is... disturbing.
And I thought I had a disturbing mind.
Overall though, I like it, simply because of how disturbing it is.
i like this! like... totally! :-D
That is not at all what I expected. I can't help but imagine this as a perfect candidate for an infinity zoom.
Haha awesome :-D
8-0
Somehow I imagined it being a lot more into the red tones...(laugh)
so as disturbing an image that is, it's much less of what I imagined it to be! Now I'm somewhat dying to play that game! (nod)
I interpreted this a little wrong....I was thinking nursery - hospital....not nursery - children....so I don't think my Pain-ursery ;) picture is following the rules!!! Oh well...Maybe I can save it for something else :D

@Mouth for war, I left the topic open for interpretation. So go interpret! ;)
No rules, that's how this competition rolls!!!
By the way, love the entries so far...
Thanks Mad,
In that case , I would be honoured to create a 3d background for this competition.
Ive got an idea in my head but it requires some trickery and jiggery pokery to get the effect I want ;)so fingers crossed I can realise my vision.
Ill get on with it over the weekend then :)
Good luck everybody and amazing entrys so far.
@Mandle: If H. R. Giger painted in white it would look like that. Great stuff!
@Grok: Cool colors! You can definitely always tell a Grok work.
Yhanks mad...however...it enden up sucking....well maybe not sucking but...it became pretty messy...ah..."to hell with it" to quote a song title of my old band :-D
Mandle... you beast. I love it. Imagine the ambient soundtrack.
I know this is slightly off topic so please forgive me, but what is the best way to post my image when its done. I have a website of my own that I can host it on, but I often see other peoples images that are full size on the thread , but are so large at 100% that you have to pan and scroll all ways to see the image and can never appreciate it as a whole - this will indeed ruin the effect of my submission. However, at the same time, my submission will be fairly Hi res and detailed, so I don't really want some zoomed out low res version spoiling it either. Ive posted images on here before, and I know there are several ways to do it, so what can anybody reccomend?
Thanks , hope everybody is getting on well with this competition :)
Well... normally you should just post it at the resolution your "game" is on... if it's 320x200 than that's the size you should post it, if it's 3000x2000 then that's what you should post. ;)
If you think it's too big and you can post a smaller version and link it to a larger/full size. (think that's okay, anyway. ;) ).
Thanks Cassiebsg , I think the final render size will b 1920x1080 or something close, I cant quite remember but its Blenders default render size. Anyway it looks great on my 24" monitor but I dont want any panning/scrolling hassle for anybody viewing on a laptop or tablet or similar. Are you doing a submission for this competition?
No. Have no idea or I can't currently think of any BG for my game that would require a nursery... in the child care sense... and the med tech center jwalt already started by doing stuff for it.
Besides am in the middle of trying to finish the short game, plus assembling a new computer.
Anyway.... back to topic. ;)

My contribution to this Background Blitz. I imagined some kinda scientist having mutated creatures growing in tanks filled with radioactive water. Could be water tapped from Dr. Freds pool.
Anyways, hope you like it. I have a small "making of" video, since I did this piece on iPad with ProCreate. So if anyone would be interested, I could upload it to YouTube :)
Oh, to be able to find time to take part in these competitions...
But... if I did decide to enter this...
Well, who said it had to be a nursery of caring for babies? It could also be the kind of nursery where you'd find newly sprouted plants to put in the garden.
Just a thought.
So...
Less than a week to go. Hopefully, some of the mentioned interest results in a background :-D.
Also, feel free to share unfinished stuff, as well, since it's always interesting to see how you guys work!
I do love the current entries a lot, but still hope for some more competition...
I'm still going to post my entry, I'm just waiting until the last minute before I post. Because it just doesn't look good enough yet. There's something missing that I can't quite put my finger on.
I just had a go at something but it was crap and then I ruined it further by putting blood everywhere. Now not only is it crap, but I'll probably look like a psycho baby-killer if I show anyone. It's in the bin :-/

Ooh, blood. I think might steal that idea. :-D
And no, I'm not kidding. I think that might be just the thing my background is missing.
My entry is rendered im just at the tweaking stage which always takes the longest..... so my entry will probably be very last minute. So I take it the deadline will be 11.59 saturday night? Im in the UK but what timezone is the comp running on?
Finally done.
Definitely not my best work, but then again, I said I wasn't very good with backgrounds.
But hey, at least I've participated. :-D

I like to think it tells a story.
Quote
As did mine... 8-)
HAHA yeah to say the least :D
Ok here's the thing I was working on, but it's not a nursery....more of a torture room where you become a brainwashed supersoldier...If you're strong in mind....they'll kill you :D

it's not a nursery....
I dunno...could be the room where Jigsaw was raised...
Yes to what you say! :-D
It looks like a normal nursery to me.
I mean, I would raise a child in there. (laugh)

I like to think it tells a story.
I think that someone was shot next to the crib, then fell against the wall, slumped down to the floor and crawled to the foreground before bleeding out...
Not sure about the boarded-up broken window...Is a zombie apocalypse happening?
Ok I've ran out of tweaking time so ill put up what ive got. Created entirely in Blender.
Here is my submission for "The Nursery" along with some badly written, scene setting dialogue between the protagonist and his friend shortly beforehand.
"The old Leary place in the forest?! Why the hell are you going up there?!" . "I need some old documents that I think will help my investigation, I heard they left everything in there when it was abandoned" . "And you know why it was abandoned ,don't you? " . "nope..." . "it was home to The Leary Family in the 30's , they had already had 4 kids when they unexpectedly had another, it was unplanned but they decided to keep it. There wasn't much space left in the house but they managed to clear out an old room and turn it into a nursery. The story goes, that as soon as that baby was born, darkness descended upon the house. The Learys were convince that the baby was posessed. One day, they lost the plot and smothered it to death in its cot, then they went out into the forest and hung themselves. The Bodys of the other children were never found and the officers conducting the investigation found the house so disturbing that they recovered the babys body and left instantly. Nobody has never been back there" .
"yeh ok, enough of your silly ghost storys, im going up there tonight. And besides, even if there is any truth to your story, Its old documents and files Im looking for. I wont be going anywhere near the nursery. If they are still in the house, they are bound to be in the attic..."

Well done to those who managed to participate :)
Oooh that is really nice!!!!!
Thanks Mouth For War , your entry looks positively gruesome and creepy :) well done. Glad you entered it despite your doubts. Well done to everybody else who entered, great work all :)
Great entries one and all!
I'll close this competition sometime around 14 pm gmt. So, if anyone wants to submit something in any state of development, there is still some time.
Thanks Frikker :-D
Wow Frikker, that is incredible! 8-0
Is that a photo, or a 3D render?
You know what, I don't care. It's brilliant!
The angle, the lighting, the story that goes with it. I love it. :-D
Haha :) thanks Danvzare, its a 3-D model made and rendered in Blender 3D software. There is no way I would be going anywhere like that to take a photograph! :-D
Please make a survival horror game with those graphics. Yeah you heard me...get crackin' :-D
That would be awesome, it would be a bit like outlast :)
I am actually creating an adventure game which I am using Blender to create the backgrounds for and hopefully AGS to produce it, and it will feature several areas in the game that will be similar in atmosphere to this. Unfortunately nobody on here has seen anything of it yet, even though it has been nearly three years in the making , as all the backgrounds are not rendered out yet so they dont really pass the "2 finished in-game screenshot" rules for the WIP forum. Hopefully ill have some rendered out and be able to start a game WIP thread within the year.....

Especially if the photo was not touched-up. I see the ghost-toddler. The cool thing is it took me a while to notice it so it was creepier when I did. Very nice! And you are a Blender GOD!
Cassie, I think you've found your go-to guru for help with the Blender beastie (laugh)
So, I guess it's voting time!
And your categories are....
Concept - Artistic Execution - Playability
Judge wisely!!! :P
Concept: Mandle
Artistic Execution: Frikker
Playability: Fred Five
Concept - Frikker
Artistic Execution - Frikker
Playability - Fred Five
My votes;
Concept - Mandle
Artistic execution - Frikker
Playability - Grok
Concept - Mandle (that is just so.... )
Artistic execution - Frikker (lovely, looks awesome! Congrats! (nod) )
Playability - Grok (actually it's a tie with Fred Five, as I think both are as playable with lots of places to investigate. Still, going with Grok due to the perspective that will give less character scaling.)
Frikker to Everything! :D
Concept - Mandle
Artistic Execution - Fred Five
Playability - Danvzare
Concept: Mouth for war
Artistic Execution: Frikker
Playability: Fred Five
Ok ive thought long and hard about this.... all entrys are great in their own individual ways , and all are so different in terms of concept and style:
Mandle - pleasantly disturbing/worrying and a great unique concept.... :)
Grok - A fun idea in your usual trademark style with nice use of the light coming in through the window
Fred Five - Another great concept and a background that I would love to explore
Danvzare - Pefect for an old school nostalgic game that provokes curiosity as to what went on in there...
Mouth For War - Brilliantly creepy , you discover something new everytime you look at it .
Anyways , based on the voting categories , my votes are:
CONCEPT - Fred Five (Mandle a close second with that belter of a :shocked:8-0:shocked: factor)
ARTISTIC EXCECUTION - Mouth For War (im a sucker for 3-d art , Fred Five would be my second choice)
PLAYABILITY - Between Grok and Danvzare so a vote each if poss as I cant decide.
CONCEPT - Fred Five
ARTISTIC EXCECUTION - Frikker
PLAYABILITY - Danvzare
Ok, the counting is done...
(http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab12/Mad1978/Mobile%20Uploads/nurseryTrophyB.png) Mandle
(http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab12/Mad1978/Mobile%20Uploads/nurseryTrophyS.png) Fred Five
And the winner is...
(http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab12/Mad1978/Mobile%20Uploads/nurseryTrophyG.png) Frikker
Thanks to everyone for participating, with entries, voting, or otherwise!
Take it away Frikker.
Congratulations Frikker - good job (nod)
Well done everybody :) , Ok Mad, ive never done a competition before but Ive got an idea so ill get it rolling asap when I can get to my computer. Will have it up in the next few days.
A well-deserved win for an amazing piece of work! Can't wait to see what you come up with!
Congratulations everyone! :-D
You all deserve it for such great entries.
And a big congratulations to you Frikker. Your background definitely deserves first place.
Give us back Fred Five he's got work to do! ;-)
Changed my idea when my Girlfriend looked at me dissapointingly when I told it to her......
Ive thought long and hard and come up with one that is still the background creating competition that it always is, however ive put a slight twist on it. Hopefully you guys will like it, but I do however have to create a bit of simple art to make it work which I will do on Friday.
So keep your eyes peeled for the next Background Blitz which will go live on Saturday 14th May :)
