Title: A Cure for the Common Cold
Post by: MashPotato on Sat 13/01/2007 15:53:12
A Cure for the Common Cold

After spending years as a starving artist, you've managed to catch the eye of a influential gallery director.  The problem: he wants to see some new work, and you've got a terrible cold that is draining your creativity.
You'd better find a cure for the common cold--and fast!

Download: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=839

This is my first game; it is rather small, but I hope if you have some time you'll have a play and leave me some feedback ^_^

PS: -there is (ripped) music and sound effects, so turn your speakers on
-an Italian translation is now available

Just finished it. Nice 2-room-game, simple but done well. A few more animations wouldn't have hurt, but your sprites and backgrounds look very nice, which kinda makes up for that. Keep it up, I can't wait for a longer game! :)

Post by: MashPotato on Sat 13/01/2007 17:58:50
Thanks for downloading!  I'm glad you are liking/liked it, notwithstanding the lame animations ;).
This was mostly done as a way to start getting a handle on AGS scripting, so I'll soon be restarting work on The Hatmaker's Tale which will be longer, and hopefully a little more sophisticated :)

When i use "quit" the game won't respond anymore.

A bug or just something here?

Stuck in the game but i like playing it so far.

For reasons unknown, in the save/load/quit dialogue boxes, only the bottom half of the buttons work.  Sorry about that, I hope that fixes your problem! :)

Thought it was a solid game, other than the dodgy walking animation! Next time I want to see his mum.

Nice, thanks! Finished it.

Spoiler
When you use it once, the handle breaks off, and your fingers dont fit. So you need to wedge it up with some sort of thin stick ;).

Spoiler
Then it gets stuck, so you need to grease it up. But the grease is hard. You need to melt it again. Dunk it in the pot on the stove and use the cup to take it out.

Yay!  I just played it too...I hadn't seen the finalized version 'til just now.  Tres fun, hon!  And for future potential coworkers, MashPotato is a sweet, patient, understanding and PATIENT boss.  ;D  Ironically, I got a terrible cold while helping her with this, then had to go out of town last minute, then got *shingles*, of all thingles, otherwise it probably would've been out weeks ago.  If anyone else feels cold-like symptoms after playing, please discontinue use and see your doctor.  Hope you all enjoy playing it as much as I did helping with it!  Cheers on your magnum opus, hon! :)

Hey Mash, what a great little game! I enjoyed it.
Took me about 15 minutes to figure everything out and finish it on my own.

I like the artwork. A few parts of the game gave me a good chuckle. Puzzles seemed interesting enough and not too hard to figure out.

Spoiler
The animation was a bit limited and the coins were hard to spot.

But, overall a really good job. Thanks for sharing with us.

I'm sure you will continue to improve your game-makin' skillz.  :)
Looking forwards to seeing more of your stuff in future.

Thanks for playing, everyone, I'm glad you enjoyed it ;D

I made an updated version, fixing a couple of responses and a minor bug (that didn't affect gameplay), so there's no real need to redownload if you already have the previous version.

Peder: Hmm, I'm not sure what the problem is as I just tried downloading it and it worked fine, and my bandwidth shouldn't be anywhere near exceeded :-\.  Try again, and if you continue to have problems you can PM me :)

Way to go Mash!!! I started playing yesterday. Great work. I am really impressed and I am really excited for you. I will get back to playing it soon. Can't wait for you to finish your next game!!!

Edit: I just finished the game, it was really cool! Great work, Mash!!! I really loved the game. The graphics were excellent, the story was funny, and the puzzles were just right; not too hard, not too easy and there were quite a bit of them for a two room game!!! All in all, a great AGS game!!!

It misses some interaction description, expecially with the faucet, but it's a minor issue.
Really a good job!

Just finished it. I think this was really nice little game.

Only "real" thing, that annoyed me a little bit was, that the cursor had to be excatly in right place to show the hotspot description or to use the item. That's why I had little problems in one of the puzzles  :P.

But overally it was good game. Nice job!

Mash,

Just finished the game!

Most impressive first work! As mentioned elsewhere the animation lacks a little bit, but for sucha small game it's not bad at all. Graphics are really...not cute as one would expect exactly... Very clever though indeed.

Puzzles are well paced and great overall. Music is also a great pick.

Well done on your first game and let this be the first of many to come :)

Spoiler
Being from the central US, I don't handle that many Canadian coins, so I don't know for sure of what material they are made.Ã,  However, I always thought they were aluminum, being lighter than our US copper-zinc coins, and also trom the sound they make when they hit other coins.Ã,  So anyway, what I'm getting to here is, I rejected the idea of using the magnet to get the coins out of the sink because I didn't think they were magnetic (aluminum and US coins aren't.)Ã,  I didn't try the magnet until I just started using items with items, and it stuck to the gummy stick.Ã,  I'm still not sure Canadian coins are magnetic.Ã,  I'll have to check the next time I get some.

Otherwise, it's a very nice little game.

Spoiler
I especially like beating the lumps out of the matress with the make-shift billy-club.Ã,  Now that would have been a good place for some quality animation.

Very appealing little game you've made here MashPotato.

Normally I'd say that the main character sprite is too large for an adventure game, but you've managed to handle him and his surroundings nicely- and further more with style. Reminds me slightly of the style of a Cartoon Network toon 'Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends.'

It was surprisingly fun to experience the world of a depressed artist. Quite an original spin and I like the understatement of completing such mundane, daily tasks. The music was also well suited and puzzles logical, if a little too simple. All I could really ask for is MORE!

(PS. In my mind I'd like to think that the 'homeless man in the box' line was a reference to my game, but that's most likely wishful thinking on my behalf).

Yes, I double-checked this to be sure when Strange Visitor brought it up; all Canadian coins are magnetic (except pennies), and searching on-line I found that a good number of other countries (UK, New Zealand, European Union, Brazil, etc.) also have some  magnetic coins.  I realize it might not have been completely fair to Americans, but the puzzle was already coded and since it still technically "worked", I left it in and just specified that the coins were Canadian.

Sure, obvious plagiarism. It's not as though the red-and-yellow background hasn't been done to death, or people can have, god forbid, shirts that are the same colour as lab coats (white! Good grief, who *ever* wears white!) or hair that is the same colour.
