A Cure for the Common Cold

This is my first game; it is rather small, but I hope if you have some time you'll have a play and leave me some feedback ^_^
PS: -there is (ripped) music and sound effects, so turn your speakers on
-an Italian translation is now available

Argh! I love you. Downloading...
Haha it's awesome mash! I love his depressing mood, and the graphics style is brilliant! I'm a little stuck but I will finish it :D
Just finished it. Nice 2-room-game, simple but done well. A few more animations wouldn't have hurt, but your sprites and backgrounds look very nice, which kinda makes up for that. Keep it up, I can't wait for a longer game! :)
Thanks for downloading! I'm glad you are liking/liked it, notwithstanding the lame animations ;).
This was mostly done as a way to start getting a handle on AGS scripting, so I'll soon be restarting work on The Hatmaker's Tale which will be longer, and hopefully a little more sophisticated :)
When i use "quit" the game won't respond anymore.
A bug or just something here?
Stuck in the game but i like playing it so far.
For reasons unknown, in the save/load/quit dialogue boxes, only the bottom half of the buttons work. Sorry about that, I hope that fixes your problem! :)
Thought it was a solid game, other than the dodgy walking animation! Next time I want to see his mum.
Yes it did! Thank you.

Great looking game, love it! Puzzles are right up my alley.
I'm just having trouble with the last one:
Spoiler
Ive opened the windows, revived the plant and fixed the bed, now i just need the soup. Ive called the coupon guys and they said i need money. I made the magnetic stick, and i guess i use that to aquire money, but wherefrom?
Spoiler
look on the sink
It is hard to see!
How did you opened the window on de right?
Nice, thanks! Finished it.
Quote from: Dreamless on Sat 13/01/2007 21:30:38How did you open the window on the right?
Spoiler
When you use it once, the handle breaks off, and your fingers dont fit. So you need to wedge it up with some sort of thin stick ;).
Spoiler
Then it gets stuck, so you need to grease it up. But the grease is hard. You need to melt it again. Dunk it in the pot on the stove and use the cup to take it out.
Spoiler
i can't find a thin wedge though...melted the grease from the refrigerator already.

Look at the paint buckets under the easel. There's a stirring stick in one of them.
[EDIT]I just realised you told me about the coins, so you probably had it already(?). Did we just uncover a bug...
Yay, Mash, you finished it! Looks gorgeous, downloading now ;D
edit: I did everything except the flowers, I don't even know how to start with that :( But thoroughly enjoying it!
edit2: hehe @ the blob creature on the newspaper ;)
Thanks for playing everyone, and for spreading the word Dreamless, that's very nice of you :)
As for the possible bug, I just double-checked it, and I'm pretty sure everything's fine :)

You noticed! ;D
Of course I noticed! ;D
Finished the game! Cute, sweet, lovely graphics and humour. :D
Yay! I just played it too...I hadn't seen the finalized version 'til just now. Tres fun, hon! And for future potential coworkers, MashPotato is a sweet, patient, understanding and PATIENT boss. ;D Ironically, I got a terrible cold while helping her with this, then had to go out of town last minute, then got *shingles*, of all thingles, otherwise it probably would've been out weeks ago. If anyone else feels cold-like symptoms after playing, please discontinue use and see your doctor. Hope you all enjoy playing it as much as I did helping with it! Cheers on your magnum opus, hon! :)
Hey I played the game and wow I really enjoyed it!!! Really was one of a kind and heaps fun! Thanks Mash Potato for this game, I, like others, am really looking forward to your next game. Keep that up wont you :)
Hey Mash, what a great little game! I enjoyed it.
Took me about 15 minutes to figure everything out and finish it on my own.
I like the artwork. A few parts of the game gave me a good chuckle. Puzzles seemed interesting enough and not too hard to figure out.
Spoiler
The animation was a bit limited and the coins were hard to spot.
But, overall a really good job. Thanks for sharing with us.
I'm sure you will continue to improve your game-makin' skillz. :)
Looking forwards to seeing more of your stuff in future.

Spoiler
The flowers look a bit dried out, don't they? Maybe you should water them. But water alone won't do it, they also need sunlight...
Hi Mash,
I can not believe this was your first game ;D
Really nice graphics, humorous comments and good puzzles!
Well done!!!!
Hope to see many more games from you soon! :)
I am having trouble downloading this :(.
Have tried 4 times now and are trying the fifth time now.
Is it possible to get a mirror?
Peder.
Thanks for playing, everyone, I'm glad you enjoyed it ;D
I made an updated version, fixing a couple of responses and a minor bug (that didn't affect gameplay), so there's no real need to redownload if you already have the previous version.
Peder: Hmm, I'm not sure what the problem is as I just tried downloading it and it worked fine, and my bandwidth shouldn't be anywhere near exceeded :-\. Try again, and if you continue to have problems you can PM me :)
Hi, i need a help with opening a window on a right, what should I do? And also I don't now how to get a coins from a sink. Thx
I've just started a hints/tips thread, you can ask there :)

I got the game emailed to me by Petra!

Way to go Mash!!! I started playing yesterday. Great work. I am really impressed and I am really excited for you. I will get back to playing it soon. Can't wait for you to finish your next game!!!
Edit: I just finished the game, it was really cool! Great work, Mash!!! I really loved the game. The graphics were excellent, the story was funny, and the puzzles were just right; not too hard, not too easy and there were quite a bit of them for a two room game!!! All in all, a great AGS game!!!
MashPotato, it's an amazing game! I really enjoyed it a lot.
I'm anxious to play your next games! :D
I really liked it! Loved the music and the story.
It misses some interaction description, expecially with the faucet, but it's a minor issue.
Really a good job!
Just finished it. I think this was really nice little game.
Only "real" thing, that annoyed me a little bit was, that the cursor had to be excatly in right place to show the hotspot description or to use the item. That's why I had little problems in one of the puzzles :P.
But overally it was good game. Nice job!
very enjoyable. Short but sweet.
Lovely looking game, thanks Mash!
Now get back to the Hatmaker's Tale!
Thanks for the kind comments, everyone, and I am taking heed of the criticisms as well :)

I'm on it! ;)
@sheail: Where i can find the theard for the A-Team Game? BTW A Cure for the Common Cold is a Cool Game !!!
Nice game. Very short, but really a good appetizer for what there is to come. There IS something to come, right?
There is something to come in that I plan on working on another game, but for this particular character this is probably the end of the road :) (for now, anyway)
Enjoyed this wee game thanks.
Loved the bit at the end - thought it was funny!Ã, ;D
First Game? I am impressed...... Very well done and enjoyable..... Nice, Clean fun game to play which I really appreciate.........Luck to you in the future and I look forward to more of your talent here at ags.
Thank you
Mash,
Just finished the game!
Most impressive first work! As mentioned elsewhere the animation lacks a little bit, but for sucha small game it's not bad at all. Graphics are really...not cute as one would expect exactly... Very clever though indeed.
Puzzles are well paced and great overall. Music is also a great pick.
Well done on your first game and let this be the first of many to come :)
Nikolas
Thanks for the kind comments, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Thanks!
(She was talking about my last game, obviously)
I've enjoyed it too. For a change i've played a game that's logical, some games require a bit of guessing and a lot of questions, but not this one - excellent!
After a long time I managed to download it a couple of days ago!
And I had finally some time to play it today!
I must say this is a lovely game!
The music fit really good with the game and the art was lovely!
A really good game!
Looking forward for your next game!

Being from the central US, I don't handle that many Canadian coins, so I don't know for sure of what material they are made.Ã, However, I always thought they were aluminum, being lighter than our US copper-zinc coins, and also trom the sound they make when they hit other coins.Ã, So anyway, what I'm getting to here is, I rejected the idea of using the magnet to get the coins out of the sink because I didn't think they were magnetic (aluminum and US coins aren't.)Ã, I didn't try the magnet until I just started using items with items, and it stuck to the gummy stick.Ã, I'm still not sure Canadian coins are magnetic.Ã, I'll have to check the next time I get some.
Otherwise, it's a very nice little game.
Spoiler
I especially like beating the lumps out of the matress with the make-shift billy-club.Ã, Now that would have been a good place for some quality animation.
Very appealing little game you've made here MashPotato.
Normally I'd say that the main character sprite is too large for an adventure game, but you've managed to handle him and his surroundings nicely- and further more with style. Reminds me slightly of the style of a Cartoon Network toon 'Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends.'
It was surprisingly fun to experience the world of a depressed artist. Quite an original spin and I like the understatement of completing such mundane, daily tasks. The music was also well suited and puzzles logical, if a little too simple. All I could really ask for is MORE!
(PS. In my mind I'd like to think that the 'homeless man in the box' line was a reference to my game, but that's most likely wishful thinking on my behalf).
Thanks, all :)

Yes, I double-checked this to be sure when Strange Visitor brought it up; all Canadian coins are magnetic (except pennies), and searching on-line I found that a good number of other countries (UK, New Zealand, European Union, Brazil, etc.) also have some magnetic coins. I realize it might not have been completely fair to Americans, but the puzzle was already coded and since it still technically "worked", I left it in and just specified that the coins were Canadian.

Haha, you'd have to ask Strange Visitor, that was his line ;).
Unfortunately, I am really behind on my game playing, and that includes Sydney Finds Employment :-[
Heh...it was honestly just spur-of-the-moment creativity...I don't think I've ever played Sydney Finds Employment. :)
Edit: Double-heh! I just played it, great job man. I'm totally going to put it in for some 2006 nominations. :)
Your first game huh?? It certainly doesn't seem like it. I LOVED it! It was really funny and the graphics were INCREDIBLE!!!
You did such a wonderful job! Please make another game soon!
I've been following your WIP game The Hatmaker's Tale with great delight. I really loved this game. In fact, it's got me even more excited! Don't give up! I really wanna play that. I'm looking forward to this, ManiacMatt's next game and DNG2 with great anticipation.
Thank you Cosmo and Cheese, and work on Hatmaker will be continued again shortly :)
This was a lovely short game. The graphics were charming and the puzzles were particularly nice. I liked the way that my goals were obvious, but I had to think in order to reach them. The best part for me was...
Spoiler
...learning that Canadian money, like some British coins, is magnetic. Hurrah for ferrous currency!
Sadly, my post must also turn into a "now get back to work!" reply. Looking forward to the Hatmaker's Tale!
Just finished playing this. Very good, loved the atmosphere. Most of the humour actually made me laugh out loud, if not chuckle, which doesn't happen all that often. So thank you for making me smile. :)
Strange Visitor should really get back in this thread and take a bow :). Thanks for all your kind comments!

Yes, Huzzah! ;D
UPDATE: Thanks to Cinfa, an Italian translation is now available! So if you have some Italian friends, want to brush up on your Italian, or want to learn some Italian, "Una Cura per il Comune Rafreddore" is ready for download :)
Erhm...okay, Mash, if you say so...
*takes a bow and ties it hesitantly in his hair*
Is it me?
Heh...what with my month-long continuous string of illness, maybe I should do voice-recording for this game before the amoxicillin kills my character believability. :)
Seriously, thanks for all the compliments, folks...it was a great time working on this game with MashPotato, and I'm glad you all enjoyed it so much. ;D

Brilliant game, despite the obvious plagiarism.Ã, ;)
Sure, obvious plagiarism. It's not as though the red-and-yellow background hasn't been done to death, or people can have, god forbid, shirts that are the same colour as lab coats (white! Good grief, who *ever* wears white!) or hair that is the same colour.
;)
I've just downloaded this beauty... bit late I know.Ã, But I thought now was the time to play it as I have a stinking cold right now and hopefully this game will provide the solution.
I'll give some feedback when I've finished.
[EDIT]
Yay, short but sweet... I don't feel any better and I've got work at 1, so I won't be painting any masterpeices any time soon.
Maybe I should try this game now that I have a cold :P
Haha, thanks guys :)
Hi Mash. Just realised I didn't post on this thread. I loved it! Great logical yet taxing puzzles, cute idea, nicely executed.
Great work :)
lemmy
Thank you kindly, Lemmy :)
Hah, Mash your games next on my to play list. I just had so many things to do with this new gfx card when I got it :)
Anyway Where did I save this file...
Edit: Thanks Mash, that was an awesome game! Loved the puzzles, very logical and pretty straight forward, very cute game!
I had the common cold when I was playing the game and the solution did nothing for me whatsoever.
Thanks a lot, asshole.
The game was fun though. :D
Thanks Afflict and Shbaz :)

Thank you for your game. It was very fun to play.
Fun. Loved the music and graphics.
Great little game, loved it!
Hey thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
