Title: Alpha X - Project: SMASH
Post by: esper on Sat 13/01/2007 02:15:43
Well, it didn't take me very long (especially since I worked nonstop for three days and used a GUI I had already previously written), but nevertheless... Here is the completed game:

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=837

I really hope everyone likes this, because I want to make a bigger game using this idea and I wanted to see how people liked this before I undertook a large-scale project... so please, post any and all comments and criticisms. If anyone would be interested in helping out with background art and music in the sequel, please drop me a line.

Alpha X is a first-person cyberpunk adventure. For more info and screenshots, look here:

enjoy  ;D

Just downloaded, and I'm playing it now. Looks really good so far - draws you right in, and the dialogue is really well-written!

edit: Finished it! Nice little game, sweet and simple. The music and sound effects really did a good job in setting the atmosphere. Looking forward to the next one!

Unsuitable for work warning: I followed the download link, then I clicked on the "[download for] free" button and I was treated to some ads for porn.

Not only that, but I couldn't even download the game. I got: "All download slots assigned to your country (...) are in use." Please remove the download link from this entry. Thank you very much.

On the other hand, since I *did* manage to download your game, there's no need to *remove* the download link from the entry. Still, you might want to consider looking into some other hosting service, if the current one has such *potential* problems.

Thanks for the notification, I'll get to work on finding something. I certainly wish AGS Upload was working. I tried downloading my own game just to make sure that it worked, and all I got was a dating ad, so I didn't think much of it. Attempting to find alternate hosting now...

(EDIT) All done. The new link is currently up and working. It is AD FREE, and seems to work very well. For anyone who might have tried to download the game and either got offended by the NSFW content or weren't even able to get the game, please do me the favor of giving e one more shot. Much obliged.

(EDIT 2)  :-\ Dang it. I left a save game in this new download file!!! Just ignore it, it doesn't work anyway...

The download link still goes to uploading.com, but I see that the game's main site has changed to wikiupload.

?? It's working fine for me, I don't see what the problem is. The mirror is still uploading.com, but if you use the main download link, it should take you to wikiwhatchamacallit. I really hope you're wrong, because I PMed blashyrkh and said it was safe to download now!!!

No, I just wanted to alert you that the link that says "Download" goes to uploading.com, while the game's "main site" link goes to wikiupload. But if you say that you left it that way as a mirror, then ok :) just wanted to let you know.

Nice game, thanks Esper!
Great atmosphere and interesting story.

You should use americangirlscouts.org as a host. See the first post in the "AGS Game Uploads" thread.

Possibly the wrong place but: Is AGS Uploads working again now? See the LAST post in that thread...

Nice little game, well done Esper!
A little short maybe, but then I guess it's more like a Tech Demo, than a full fledged game. The footstep effect on some of the room transitions would get a bit annoying on a longer game, IMO, but other than that I'd have no problem with the GUI in a bigger project. And, I'm interested to see more of the story unfold.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it greatly.

Steve: Yeah, I tried AGS first thing. I think Ashen is right, it's still down. Whenever I tried to upload I got a thing in the middle of the page that said EXEC fail or something...

Ashen: Thanks, and yeah, I agree with the footsteps. I really like them as part of the atmosphere to the game, though. Do you think maybe if I cut off one of the footstep sounds and started loading the new room earlier it might make it a bit more bearable in a longer game?

Anyway, I thought I would give an update here on how the new one is coming, since I'm not far enough along yet to get a WIP thread. I'm finished with the new GUI, which is similar to the old one only with some better-devised graphics and more options. Also, it's more compact, so you get everything you need on one screen instead of having to switch between two, and then calling up a third for system functions.

I've added a first-person gunfight capability, where pressing SPACE draws and holsters your gun. It's working nicely so far. I also changed the scanner cursor in Project:SMASH to a regular look cursor. Now, scanning is a seperate option, and I've added a nice little effect to that.

You also have the ability to access computer terminals. Since you're a member of Bureau 6, you have access to the Alpha-X Database from any computer terminal. I'm working on that right now. It should take a while, but when I'm done you should be able to look up anything in the game world.

Thanks again for the download, and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Is anyone else having a hard time downloading??? I just had to send the file to ManicMatt over an instant messaging service because the zip file he was getting was corrupted, and the main download site at wikiupload is showing up to me as an invalid url. Does anyone know of a reliable place I could put this thing until agsuploads is working again? I'm trying rapidshare now but it keeps freezing.

This thread has some nice suggestions for upload space: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=7920.40

Since your game is below 30MB you might want to try:
http://www.35mb.com
http://www.illhostit.com
http://www.filebuffer.net

and so on. Just remember to check if they take off your file after a certain period.

thanks so much for keeping up with my project, auriond... I really appreciate it. I used rapidshare for now and it seems to be working fine, but they do delete after 45 inactive days.

thanks again, all. I really hope this whole shebang hasn't hurt the chances of people showing interest in the full-length sequel I'm currently very hard at work on.

Downloaded and played it some.
I really like the style and gameplay of this game!

Nicely done Esper!

Also uploaded the game here: http://www.sonsofgaia.net/AGS/Project_SMASH.zip
Hope this can make it easier for some people to download it! :).

Thanks, PJ, you're a lifesaver. I kiss you!

Coming along nicely on the sequel. I should have enough materials soon for a WIP thread. I'm not ready right now, but if anyone feels like working on music, voice acting, or animation, I'd sure be glad of the help. Especially the voice acting. ManicMatt did a fine job by himself in secrets, but that was a comedy :)

Nice presentation! I love all the drawings in the game! They're really good!

There was a good atmosphere going too, and I like how you've got a whole world with it's own rules and ideals going on.

I've got a few crits, but they're only minor squabbles. I'll PM you as it's not worth anyone hearing about.

I'll have to give this a whirl, Did you redraw that X? cause it looks like the one from Xenogears

Never played Xenogears. I drew it with a blood brush I made in Photoshop, then slammed a texture and a light filter on it.

Alright so I just finished the game... Awesomely done, Can't wait for the next one, hopefully you can make it a bit longer than this one too.   The sound track was nice, I need to replay from a save for a second to see what happens...  But anyways nicely done, really captured Cyberpunk (better than BASS)
