Title: Annie Android: Automated Affection
Post by: ThreeOhFour on Sun 25/01/2009 04:15:18
Annie Android has her eye on that handsome Mailbot, but is shocked to discover that she has been assigned to be another bot's partner!

Help Annie win the heart of Mailbot and defeat the nasty RoboHQ!

BIG thanks to my awesome testers Ghost and Bicilotti (and Sebastian of course)!

Apologies to The Ivy for doing the robots + love thing (I wasn't trying to copy, I swear :P)

More apologies to ProgZmax who tried to give me graphics advice, which I ignored and stuck with the 6 colour palette  :-[

Get the game here! (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1128)

Great game! I love the limited palette and the humor.

But I'm stuck at the part with the
Spoiler
assassinbots. In my inventory, I have the tech support tool, the waterfruit, the CHAOS HAMMER 7000 and the virus. Annie doesn't seem to want to use any of these items.

Hahaha....awesome! You actually did it!

Great game. Viva la RoboRevolution! I wanted to play it full screen, but it gave me an error everytime after the first screen showed (and created a CrashInfo dump file, which I can upload if you want), so I had to play it 3x windowed.

ProgZ: Because I worship your animations, your comment means a lot to me! Thanks! :D

Peder: Thanks man! AND, I forgot to say before ( :-[) a BIG thanks to you for being the host with the most! ;D

MantraofDoom: Thank you, I was unsure how the limited palette would go down, but I am glad I tried it! If you're still stuck, there's a more detailed hint in the Hints & Tips thread :).

Sebastian: Yes, finally, another released game. Hooray!

Bicilotti: You know we couldn't have done it without you! Thanks for being patient during the testing!

Helme: Thank you :). If you're still stuck, take a closer look at the guardbot after you try to use the door. Annie's comment might reveal some information that is not immediately apparent.

Babar: Oh no, I am sorry about the crash! It'd be great if you could upload that crashinfo file for me, because I'd hate to think people couldn't play it fullscreen. And yes, I actually did it :).

Leon: Thanks bud :). I knew you'd find something - I am not sure if that is a typo or not... it seemed to make sense when I was typing it, but I am not so sure now. I think it is just clumsy wording, especially since I probably wrote it after midnight.

To everyone who has played, and especially to everyone who has commented so far:

Thank you!

Dear the world,

I would like to point out that Ghost is the man, and that without his scripting advice, this game would have taken far longer to build and been a lot more frustrating for me than it ended up being.

Yours truly,

Ben

Hahaha, had to look up "appalling".. it's funny how similar words can mean the complete opposite.

@Ben:

Really cute game. Haven't finished it yet but I like it very much. I think the small palette and the color choice really match the theme/environment. And the animation are very smooth. Well done.

Fun game! Great work on all the animations and character graphics, for some reason I really liked the walk-cycle. It's definitely my favorite game out of your releases thus far.

I think the assassin-bot puzzle was slightly buggy, for instance
Spoiler
I could sneak below the right bot, and get in front of the button, which led to my confusion when in reality I had to sneak BEHIND him.
[close]
And I don't mean to be a bad-sport, but I feel that the story (which was a great idea) could have been executed a bit better, say in terms of the conflict between robot HQ and free-thinking. For example, maybe have robot HQ be more opposing to the "free-thinking" idea early in the story so that it's clear the player is embarking down on a road of rebellion.

Overall, it was really nice! Thanks for making it!

I tried it a few times. Saved, loaded, quit, loaded again, and it still didn't work.

Also, I noticed the same Freudian slip at the beginning that Leon did.

downloaded it as soon as soon as i got the link and played it right through to completion.
i really like the palette and the way it's used, and the music is pretty fantastic, i'd definitely like to be able to download it.
on the whole it's a nice little game that's not too challenging but also not too easy, i'd like to see more games set in this universe, it plays very much like a teaser, a taste of things to come hopefully :)

Dualnames: Hilarious typo up there, man ;D. Sorry the story was so weird, but that's how I write em :). Glad you enjoyed the game otherwise.

Indie: Thanks! I appreciate you playing the game!

Dan!: Hooray!

Matti: Thanks for the nice words! Hope you enjoy finishing the game! :D

Layabout: Cheers! I appreciate the nice comments about the graphics. I'd love to do a voice acted game one of these days, so hopefully in the future we'll have something in that category as well! :)

Leon: Oops, I can't believed I missed that! Thanks for the report, I'll make the change (but will hold off uploading for a while in case I get any other bug reports).

ALPHA2T: Thanks, glad the palette worked for you :).

TheJBurger: Thanks for the nice comments about animations and graphics - I appreciate these! Thanks for the bug report, I'll have a look at those regions and see if it can't be tweaked a bit! I agree that the story was a bit underdeveloped, but I still consider writing one of my big weaknesses :). Thanks for the advice, anyhow, and thanks for playing!

UltraMagnus: Grrr, I thought I fixed that bug. I'll see if I can replicate it and figure out what is going wrong :). Thanks for playing and I am glad you enjoyed it!

Boyd: Thanks for the nice words! I won't promise a sequel or a continuation of the game as definite, but I never promise anything ;). Glad you enjoyed the game!

The Franceman: I appreciate the nice comments! Hopefully you won't be waiting too long for the next one :).

Once again, thanks to everyone who has played - and especially those of you who have commented. I really appreciate you taking the time to check out our little game!

Ok, this game is a short game.  I would like to share some thoughts.

Out of 5 cups, i would give it a 5 cups.  Nice game!!

Just finished it.  Lovely wee game.   ;D

Interesting story, with Annie wanting to be with Mailbot, and not her 'arranged partner', and trying to give Mailbot his free will.   ;D

I love the animation - how she walks, and also the way Microphone-bot popped up from the ground (cos he was hiding, hehe).  The colour scheme is brilliant, and really works for the game.

I found the assassin bot puzzle a bit tricky, as it was hard to get near to them.  I tried to edge closer to them, but she kept walking away, saying that she 'shouldn't get too near to them'.

I would also love to see more of Annie & Mailbot.  I have visions of them leading the rebellion of free will, and having many adventures (and facing many enemies) along the way.

Excellent work Ben.   ;D

Dunnoson: Yep, short games is what Ben304 does ;). Really glad you liked the game, thanks for your nice words and I hope that there'll be plenty more games from me for you to play in the future :D.

Frodo: Thanks for the encouraging words :). I agree the assassinbot puzzle was quite tricky and could have been implemented a bit better than it was, but I am glad you enjoyed the game anyway. Thanks for playing :).

Edit: Crazy I just noticed what it says under your avatar! That cracked me up so much!  ;D

I have  a theory there: In Annie's world, robots exist only for a certain purpose. Take the Park Bot. We all know there are people in a park, walking their dog, so his sole purpose is to be there, walking the dog, to make the park a park.

So that's why Mail Bot is always there: Because it is his job to DELIVER THE MAIL. He can't stop doing that- what if a new message would flow through the Ether, without him being able to deliver it in time?

Either that, or he's unconsciously already waiting to make out with that sweet android.

Chentzilla: If you noticed while Annie was trying to get a flirt on with Mailbot, he notifies Annie that "Further activities will be completed when they are recieved from RoboHQ". The reason he stays in the same spot is because he does not recieve any further orders from RoboHQ. Thanks for playing, and I hope you enjoyed :).

Ghost: Interesting to see another person's perspective on the world, and you are quite right, most of the robots exist for a sole purpose, which they refuse to deviate from. It made sense to me to make them completely set in a certain series of activities that they would carry out, and helped me to make Mailbot all the more lovable ;D

Buloght: I am really glad you completed it, and I hope you enjoyed it! Thanks for the nice words, and if all goes well I should have something new for you to play through soon :).

I would also like to give a big thanks to the review panel guys for their nice comments and nice rating :-*.

I would also like to say a big thanks to everyone who has played the game. Seeing 1000 downloads on the games database ticker in just over a week is very encouraging, and I really appreciate you all taking the time to play!

And lastly, and briefly, before I spend too much time talking, a huge thanks to TIGSource.com who were kind enough to put the game as a front page feature last week. This absolutely blew me away and made my year!

I can't wait to show you guys what we've got planned for you to play next :D!

Thanks Miguel! I'm happy you took the time to play the game, and happier that you enjoyed it and shared your comments! I hope I haven't stuck myself too deeply into a rut of the same art style over again for each game, because I always try and push myself to try something a little bit different when I draw for a game, but I am glad you think I am consistent!

I just got a chance to play through Annie Android and it was a really good short game.  Looked good, sounded good, felt good.  The plot issues some people had could easily be remedied in a sequel if you ever got the urge to make one (Repercussions from HQ and/or a jealous sweepbot coming to claim what is "his".)

Anyways, after playing This Game a couple days ago and Annie Android tonight, I think it has been sufficiently proven that a limited palette can look fantastic and carry a strong mood throughout.  I may even try to create a game with a limited color palette myself.  Thanks for the inspiration.

Very charming game, Ben.
Thanks for the half hour of entertainment.

I noticed two things, one a bug, the other a minor inconsistency:
Spoiler
When I was trying to disable the hammer hitting assassin dude, the one on the right.  I clicked somewhere too close to him, Annie replied with her 'I shouldn't get too close' message then moved to the NorthWest of the right Assassin.  Then she locked up and wouldn't move no matter where I clicked on the screen.
Luckily I saved it before the assassins came around.

Also in the end, I felt it was odd seeing Annie coming from the left of the screen approaching Mailbot, when should have been coming from the right.
It's not a horrible problem or anything, just odd.

Thanks again!

Thanks Ryan!

Somebody mentioned the game locking up before due to the Assassinbots, but I couldn't figure out where it was. I appreciate you mentioning it, because it means I might be able to have a crack at fixing it :).

I also can't believe I didn't notice that second point you brought up, and neither did anyone else mention it! That's hilarious!

Glad you enjoyed the game :)

Ben, I loved this game!  I haven't played an AGS game (or any other game for that matter) in ages, but I had to find time to play this little adorable game.  Charming is the best word to describe it.  Really nice work!

I think what I loved most about this game was the menu song. That is what sold me. Not to say the rest wasn't great as well.

F1ak3r: Hehe, I like the menu song as well :D. Thanks for playing!

I haven't played any new AGS games in a long time.... But I decided to DL this and a few others today.

I must say, I loved it. Absolutely polished, music, graphics, scripting, everything. And the perfect length for what the story was. If it was a longer game, it would've felt dragged out, but you got it just right.

However, I did notice one 'bug'. After deactivating the left (or both) Assassinbot, he'll still reply when you threaten to use the hammer or him.

Thanks for the great game Ben.

Me and Nelly enjoyed this game very much. I love limited palletes! They're both the best kind of palletes and the best kind of limits.

The only qualm I had with the visuals was that Annie seems to change height from time to time, possibly between standing and walking views. I loved everything else about it, and particularly liked the theme tune.

Roll on sequels and merchandising!

Thanks Ali (and Nelly) :D!

I appreciate the nice comments about the graphics, and agree that the animation wasn't perfect. There's always next time, I guess  :=

As for sequels... no promises ;).

As for merchandising... well, I would love to own my very own Mailbot costume ;D. Sadly, this seems impractical, and people would probably think I am a dork for walking around in it and saluting every time I say anything  ;)

Cheers!

Finished it and really liked it no less than others did. It's charming indeed thanks to great main character and the palette choice was great. Liked Annie's comments on stuff. So I enjoyed the game and stuff, don't have a doubt.

But you know, in the very beginning it was so interesting to see the dialogue between emotional robot Annie and plain classic pragmatic bot, watching them having so different approaches but both still clearly being the robots. It was so funny, I felt like no one did this before and I actually expected some more humour and maybe dark irony based exactly on this difference... but you went more classic and kind way of making everyone happy. Well, you know, I'm not after ruining your game and telling I'm dissapointed, just saying you have some interesting ideas and potential there. :)
I really like how you're doing games anyway and wish you to make a lot more!

Thanks, Captain Nemo.

Even though all the robots are meant to be machines I tried to make them all have a personality of their own, as it were. And there were other instances where Annie is the emotional machine and her dialog counterpart is the systematic logical one, but I didn't want to overuse any one particular style of 'comedy'.

Plus, I have a lot more fun making silly things than dark irony, although I try not to always turn to silly when I think of conversations.

Hey Ben, I really enjoyed this game! The graphics are adorable and very much in your style, and the animations had an impressive amount of detail considering how small they were. I dig the very limited palette as well. I think it's a good exercise, and all the more impressive that you made a whole game around it.

As far as the puzzles went, I got pretty far and then I got hung up on how to get past the guard. I have a feeling the solution must be pixelhunt-y, or I'm missing something obvious. Anyway, a small point; I'll certainly finish the game at some point.

And hey, no worries on "copying" the robots + love thing. The world needs more robot love, I say. :)

Oh, hooray for not getting my bottom sued by the Lively Ivy legal team ;D

Thanks for the nice comments :D. As for the puzzle you're stuck on, yeah, that seems to be the awkward puzzle that heaps of people get stuck on. It's not really a pixel hunt (Well, actually, yeah it sorta is  :-[), just a bit awkward. Sorry about that  :-[. You're like super close to the end so once you get past there you're home dry ;D.

Bring on the robot love!!!

The nice, clean robot love, please, I know what you AGS people are like!  :=

Just finished it yesterday (haven't had already, but found the game really good, even without having it finished)

A. Kaputtnik (Pfaller Sebastian) really owns here.
B. That pixel hunt(it's not pixel hunt, but a flashing animation of the box, wouldn't be bad) really annoyed for half an hour
C. The game's really good and dirty..(especially annie's YES, I mean yeah)
