Title: Conspiracy of Songo
Post by: fidodido on Sun 07/09/2003 02:01:40
After almost a whole year in the making, we have finally finished our second full game.

LongLife Software Presents: 'Conspiracy of Songo'.

A romantic boat ride turns into hell for Jerry Hadson and Shila Rider, a young american couple, as their boat crashes into the shore of a mysterious small town.
When Jerry, later on, gets convicted for a crime he never comitted - it's your job, as his girlfriend, to find the real criminal, and save Jerry from his personal nightmare.
But the deeper you dig, the more complicated the situation gets, as you find yourself in a conspiracy of massive proportions.

The Tripod bandwidth limit is very low, and it locks the site every time some users are trying to download it in the same time.

Does anybody know a hosting site better than TRIPOD, that can store at least 12 MB?

Post by: Timosity on Mon 08/09/2003 06:24:34
I slept on it and eventually worked it out and finished the game.

It was an excellent game, I loved it, the story and puzzles were all well thought out, and it seemed to flow pretty nicely.

Spoiler
The thing that stumped me the most was the draw in lab2 cause I looked in there and it said I didn't need anything (I knew about the switch for the camera but it told me I needed to put the camera somewhere useful first.) I checked the draw again and again and it still said I didn't need anything from there. Then flukily I looked in it again and it let me get the ventilation map, I guess I had to try and put the camera in the duct first before you could check the draw again. but I did work it out myself and finished it pretty soon after that

Again, Excellent work fidodido

Spoiler
It's supposed to be like that. When you first check the drawer, Shila says that there's a STACK OF PAPERS, and below it there's a cable. Right now, she is not looking for any kind of paper, so she doesn't bother searching the papers. But after you try to put the cable in the vent, she KNOWS that she needs to find some sort of documentation, so now she bothers looking through the stack of papers.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the game. The story was very hard to tell, because it was not complete when I was working on the graphics, and I kept developing it after a big part of the game was done. It resulted in a few holes, that was very hard to close. But I think in the end there are no holes, and everything is explained thorughout the game.

Played it through last night and I LOVE it. This is certainly the best AGS game I've played in a long time. I hope it'll get some nominations - at least in the puzzle and possibly story category - for next year's awards.

At first I was a little put off by the graphics, but they really grow on you, and by the end I loved the style (for some reason the bar is my favorite). And that first puzzle nearly made me stop playing (it made little sense to use the bottle when you had the flagpole, I thought). But after that... wow, wow, WOW! It all seemed so professional, the way new locations and telephone numbers were added. The plot, which actually made sense in the end. Although...

Spoiler
... it must be hard for a crime syndicate to profit from a business that only pays in coins :)
[close]

The puzzles were excellent. Even when they were a bit too game-like (the vodka puzzle in particular) they were well integrated in the game world. My only real trouble were those puzzles that required repeated action, and it took me a while to figure out how to get past the job interview, but I laughed out loud when I did. (I was a little disappointed though that you never got around to read those chemistry books and mix some of that solidifying liquid).

All in all this was a great game. The characters were funny (I loved how they all gathered down at the bar), the story is good and the dialog is really well written. And I really appreciated the amount of animation.

What's that song at the credits?

Edit: Oh yes, maybe I should mention, it took me some time to realize that you could go behind the hotel. Maybe that should have been a bit more obvious (possibly even a small path going around, for the garbage men).
Title: Re:Conspiracy of Songo
Post by: fidodido on Thu 11/09/2003 14:08:54
GG:

First of all, thank you very much for the good comments, it means a lot to me.  :)

Spoiler
1. About the first puzzle - I think if you put the flag pole in the hole and try to stand on it, it may break, and the bottle, which is thicker and made of stronger material, can hold you.
2. About the coins - you're absolutly right, but it was the only "hole" in a very complicated story, and I thought I could let it go.
3. About the Back of Hotel - me personally, in every adventure game I play, every time I see a whole building, I try to check if there's a back to it. Because back sides of buildings are approachable in a lot of adveture games. But still, a path to the back would have made it better.
[close]

P.S: The song at the credits is calles Momentum by Aimee Mann. It's taken from Magnolia OST (a heck of a movie btw). I don't know why, but it seemed to fit perfect in the credits. What do you think?
Title: Re:Conspiracy of Songo
Post by: GarageGothic on Fri 12/09/2003 10:16:05
For some reason I DID think about Aimee Mann when I heard the song, but I'm not all that familiar with her, so I couldn't tell if it actually was her. And although I've seen Magnolia I didn't recognize it.

I agree, it fit perfectly for the credits. I love it when games have real songs at the end, like in Tierra's KQ2VGA, Phantasmagoria and Alone in the Dark 3. It feels like an added bonus for finishing the game.
I hope I'll be able to get one at the end of my game-in-development, Shadowplay, without violating any copyrights. Maybe even something written especially for the game. Better start inquiring with acquaintances who play in bands.

OKAY, now that I have gotten to this page to ask my question, I think I know exactly how to finish the game. The only problem is, nobody asked my question, So I am still stuck.

I have the rope, pole, rock, newspaper, matches, free concert ticket, bottle, and binoculars. (hopefully I didn't miss anything) I know I need to find more bottles to get a ticket to go on the island. I am completely stuck. I have spent 2 days clicking on anything and everything. HELP.

Ps. I have no idea what people are talking about when they talk about the LAB or the CORD, etc.

AWESOME.

I haven't finished it yet since I haven't had much time. But you did a fantastic job with this game. There's great scripting in it, the story is fun and the atmosphere keeps you going...I only stopped because it was like 3 in the morning and I fell asleep...lol.

GREAT JOB!

Now make a follow-up to "The NExt Curse"...
The character-style in that game rocked arse.

Actually, Snake, I would be glad to hand the series over to you, but I don't think you have the time to do it, since you're working on your new amazing-innovative-original-will-take-years-to-complete project, 'The Legend of Leitor's Edge'.  :P

I think the chances of ME making a TNC sequel are close to zero. If I'll start working on a new project, it will not be TNC 2.

I have something else in mind - a catoony and wacky adventure about a dog who sneaked into the van of the thieves who 'cleaned' his owner's apartment during the night, and the dog has to find the way home, and maybe catch the thieves somehow. IF, and I said IF I'll decide to do it, I will write all the details in the promotion thread.

P.S. - Snake, if I decide to not do this 'dog quest', I'll think again about TNC sequel.  :)

Well I just finished the game and I just want to say it was great. A great thing about it is that it surprised me every time finding out that it is actually much bigger than I thought. First it looks simple - you jiudst need to find the thief. Then you go to a second island and the time you discover the conspriacy from Jazz is asesome. I loved that story. And the puzzles were interesting and challenging. For me it's one of the best AGS games of the year. Thumbs way up for this one.

P.S. I would like to see a sequel!  How about this: in the intro of the sequel, the jet crashes and Shila & Jerry get into an adventure in another place they have never been in before. I suggest having both characters as playable characters in differnet parts of the game.

I played the game through to the end.

I enjoyed your graphics. Very unique. Your characters weren't as good as the background, but I couldn't do any better. I think the bar backround was my favorite, too (as someone mentioned it earlier).

The music you chose for the game worked well, and was catchy, but not so catchy it was annoying.

The dialog, in some places, had some mistakes, but most of it was pretty good.

I liked you inventory gui, and your options gui. Also, the interaction/look at mouse thing was very easy to learn.

The puzzles were all logical (for an adventure game), and I don't feel I ever lost site as to what I was supposed to be doing.

All in all, I think this was a very enjoyable game. Can't wait to see more from you.

An excellent game, I must say, excellent work. I haven't played your previous game but if it's as good as this one then it's really woth a try. 8)
I don't know if it just happens to me, but I found a lot of sprite-centering bugs that happen in the game. When Shila raises her hand or something the sprite moves oddly to a position where it shouldn't be, like her feet are placed five or six pixels far from their original position and they come back when the animation ends. I have had that kind of problems when developing my own game and I solved them by centering all sprites when drawing them (adding blank columns on the left or the right side of the sprite).
There's a little bug in the harbour scene, when the ticket vendor arrives you can still go behind the desk and then the baselines seem to be messed up as Shila stands in front of the vendor but behind his hands, check it out.
Spoiler
I really liked the story, but I found it quite difficult to find out that I needed to answer all the questions wrong, it made sense afterwards, but if I hadn't read it I'll probably wouldn't have guessed it. Besides this, everything seems perfect.

Excellent work, fidodido.

Thanks a lot, Kairus!  ;)

I'm really glad you enjoyed the game. About the animation, you are totally right, and I will use your centering tip in my next game. Regarding the walkable-area, I noticed it before I released the game, but I guess I didn't do enough to fix it, although I'm sure I disabled the walkable-area after the vendor shows up. I'll check it soon. Thanks for mentioning it.

Spoiler

How about a website for this game, with some information and screenshots (basically what you posted in this thread). Makes it much easier for people to find. You can host the site on adventure developers.com, if you want, which also allows you to mirror the complete game on the server.

*coughcough*

Don't do that, please.

There already is a working link for the game. People have been using it. That is good. This is an archive link. It's to be used when the author can't be reached, or the link is broken and no one's noticed, or something. I update and maintain that archive, but I know nothing of bandwidth costs, and so am the first to ask: keep it's use to a minumum. I'm not saying "don't use it", just "make sure the author's links are broken."

Vaibhav_4u, that was a good gesture, and we appreciate it (personally, I hate RapidShare), but don't go around requesting these things just like that, k? Anyway, you could always have PMd the author or a moderator, which would give you a quick and efficient reply. ;)
