I think you need to better define what differentiates a MAGS score from an overall score.

Ahhhh, a completed game that plays nicely and is scripted quite well.  I like lots, there definetly has to be some mature-adult based games out there.

Note: All you need to do is put a rating on the game when released which specifically points certain themes (eg. sex scenes, violence) and this will give the person the option of playing it.

Then if it says "it may be offensive" then people don't have to play it.  This came up with the re-release of the Exorcist film; people have a choice.

So just put a rating on the game when ppl announce its release :)

I haven't played Flashbax yet, so I cannot really take part in that discussion, but that should be obvious without asking. A Mags-game is strictly bound to the rules announced at the beginning of the month and, which was more important in this case because this time the rules just said it has to be a game of a certain epoche, it just gives you a few weeks time to finish. So you could not really blame a Mags game for being too short for example. So if I played Bucanneer as a stand-alone game, I would maybe think its too short. but recalling he did all this including the graphics in a months its really great work. I think that's what "Mags Score" means.

I've tried to keep out of the whole "was it offensive" discussion, so I didn't even comment on the game, but seeing as things have cooled down, here are my two cents:

I actually liked the puzzles. It took me a while to get out of the cell, but that was mostly an issue of pixel hunting (hadn't noticed the button on the drinks machine). That was the only time I got stuck.

Graphics were wonderful. The music fit the mood. I didn't really care for the humor, but I didn't actually find it offensive, just un-funny at times. I thought the only problem with the masturbation scene was that it wasn't really necessary. You ask the guy for a favor, he asks for something in return, you give it to him, and he fulfills his part of the deal. That's all you needed to know really. Now, if him masturbating had somehow ruined your plans, THAT would have made a difference (at first I thought it would mess things up when he fell, but it didn't as you've already picked up the plutonium). And seriously people, using other people's hands or eyes on scanners certainly isn't a new thing in movies or games. May I remind you that the hand isn't cut off before the guy dies when you try to sedate him (to steal his key card).

Good luck with the sequel!

Allright, my final evaluation:

1. Really good plot - although starting a game by escaping a jail cell has been done to death and more, the rest of the plot helped it
2. Puzzles - some were confusing. I still don't understand what happened when I connected the robot with that cable.
Also too much going back and forth between scenes to pick up things that moments ago were impossible to pick up. This way to lengthen the gameplay is generally a pain in the ass...
3. Offensive stuff - nah, not really. All right, the jerking off was tasteless. The rest fitted the story well - I would have done the same thing probably. But hey...does he have to pick his nose ten times a minute?

Generally I think you should've gone more for the serious style...skipped the nosepicking and other slapstick comments and leet elements...the ending was excellent and really saved the general impression.

MAGS score - just the idea and the realization in a month

Overall score - all components taken seriously

To everyone who had the nose picking problem.

it was a scripting oversite from my self....he should of done that once  every couple mins instead i set idle animation up wrong.

i`m getting better at scripting now so probs like this should not arise.

Great game, only I cant get past the guard with the crate because the game crashes on me every time I try to talk to him.

I`m not sure whats happening i`ve tried to make the bug happen but the game plays okay.

You might have an early d/load...with a bug the latest version should be okay....but you`ll have to start at the begining again as the save games won`t work as stuff`s been added.

Let me know if its still happening..

And if anyone else counters this or any other problem let me know.

Hey guys,

Just stumbled on this thread today. I haven't really played Flashbax yet, although I probably will, since it's so controversial.
But seriously, Foz, what's with the little jab at Apprentice? You didn't like the music? You couldn't care for the main character? Come on, you DIDN'T like Pib? Not even a little?

You're breaking my heart.

I know that my Apprentice philosophy probably ran contrary to yours. I wanted to make a cutesy game in a Lucasarts style, something that could appeal to people of all ages (except for the sheep part, I'll admit I got a bit carried away there).
From what I hear about your game, it sounds like you intended to make a controversial game from the get-go, correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't really have a problem with violence or bad language, as long as it really fits the theme. What does bother me is when that crap is thrown in a movie (for example) just so it can get a PG-13 or R rating. Frankly, that's just jarring.

Other movies, like "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" or "Fight Club" do more than feature these elements. They are a part of the movie, which can't really be separated. You can make a PG (or G, maybe) version of "Rush Hour," but good luck trying to do that to "Pulp Fiction."

I admit to a bit of apprentice bashing along the way...

And apologize here formerly to yourselves and hobbes(bucineer).

MR. VEL wound me up and all i could see was RED MIST in front of my eyes.

Thats cleared now.

I look forward to your forthcoming games.

And maybe we could work on a joint project sometime in the future.

Cheers

That was a pretty good game. Better than I was expecting you know. I didn't really like the whole magazine thing at the end though. The graphics were cool, and the puzzles were well thought out. Good work.

Ahoy Foz!

I finally got around to playing this game.  Very impressive.  Very impressive indeed.  The gritty atmosphere, the creepy music, the cool flashbacks and the spot-on sound effects really made this a must play.

I dig the ending, although it give me the impression that there was an alternative ending.  Is there a way to find out what that black box is for?

The puzzles were great.  At no point did I feel like I was doing something out-of-place.

And as for that "controversial" scene...  I have to agree.  It wasn't necessary.  I was enjoying the game, then I saw THAT, and I had a nasty taste in my mouth for the rest of the game.  I don't mind naughty scenes as long as you can justify them in some way... but there doesn't seem to be a reason for that scene except for shock value.  Might just be a personal taste thing though.  I, personally, thought it was icky.

Overall it was a very professional and slickly-produced piece of work.  Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with.

Dave G:
I agree........
The W***ing scene was put in as an after thought and was in bad taste and in hindsight i should have excluded it.......

I have since found in the form of APOC:VEL that you can get a message across with out showing the nitty gritty.....that said the prequel will follow the same sort of mould as FB 1....there is a wanking scene but it will be less graphic as the person will be in a bush and the bush will move....and it will sort have something to do with the plot...

I did`nt start out to make a controversial game that would get loads of attention because of it.....I just made the game released it and then as people started to say this and that ,i actaully realized it was a bit near the mark in places.....
I`m glad though as it`s still  being mentioned even after a few months...

The black box you`re not the first to mention it.....

There is no alternative ending.....

The Prequel has the black box in it and as the game is set before FB1 it`ll make sense what it is used for....

Thanks for the kind words....i tried to put as much detail as i could in to the game.....
As i think even though we make amatuer games we should still aspire to a professional level....
I have gone on abit so i`ll leave it there ..........and continue my work on the prequel...
