Title: Garfield: Attack of the mutant lasagna - FINISHED!!!!
Post by: Kairus on Tue 02/03/2004 02:59:20
Ladies and gentlemen... it is time...

I proudly announce that, after more than two years of discontinuous development, 'Garfield: Attack of the mutant lasagna' is ready to be downloaded.

You can do it here (http://www.masterfxgames.com/Garfield/garfinst.exe) and you can read about it here (http://www.masterfxgames.com/Garfield/garfield.htm).
The file weights 6.11 Mb. Thanks a lot to Joseph DiPerla for hosting the file and the website.

The link has been tested, downloaded and installed again to see if it's working properly... and it's not!!! No, just joking. Everything worked fine for me.

Some screenshots, they're from the old version but they're almost the same as in the final version:

Please download it and tell me what you think of it.

Garfield is my second favourite comics charater, I hope this game is at the level of the comics, and has much of the same humour.

I'm a Garfield fan but... I just love this comic to death :) No matter how many times I look at it, it still almost brings tears to my eyes.

Did you draw EACH individual leaf on those trees or did you just use some sort of clever duplification tool?

Kinoko: That comic stripe was a funny parody. I know Garfield strips have been a little too repetitive lately, but I don't think it's easy to find all-new jokes for a three frames strip every day. I think 28 years is more than enough to any strip character, I am a big fan of Garfield, too, but the guy who wrote that article is definitely right about what he says of all the merchandising around the cat.
And I didn't draw all the leaves one by one, I just draw eight or something like that and then used a tool that paints using the images you choose. I don't know what's the name of that tool in photoshop (I use PhotoPaint), but  in PaintShop PRO it's called 'picture tube'.

Lazy Z: Don't worry about your 56k connection, my connection is the same and I could upload it. :)

I'm downloading it right now.
I'll post here saying what I think about it as soon as I manage to play it. (which will take some time, though)
/me does the math
It's 6.11Mb...
I'm on a 56k modem...
And I'm just getting 30k, ATM...
I get disconnected every 2 minutes or less...

Oh, well, hope I finish downloading it this year :-\

For those of you who need the hat, read below.

Spoiler
Get some hair out of Garfield's bed.  Climb the tree over the bench and use the hair on the man.  He'll sneeze and lose his hat.  When he gets up, use the glue on the bench.  He'll sit back down and get stuck.  Go back and get some more cat hair and use it on him again.  The same thing will happen again, but he is stuck and can't move.

Maybe I'm a complete idiot but I can't even get past the first puzzle.  I find it difficult sometimes to move to the bottom of the screen because then the verb menu pops up, so maybe there's an area that I haven't been to yet.

Spoiler
I can't wake jon up.  I figured out that I need to drench him with water, but I can't turn on the tap in the bathtub and I can't reach any of the other ones.  Do I need to deactivate the mousetrap first?

Title: Re:Garfield: Attack of the mutant lasagna - FINISHED!!!!
Post by: Kairus on Thu 04/03/2004 02:07:07
Yes, I think there are some rooms that are a little hard to get to. I should've found a way to make it clearer but couldn't think of any. The living-room, where you start, has four rooms, one has Garfield's bed, the other has doors and the mouse-trap, the other is where the TV is and the last is where the phone and the main door are. The kitchen is also a tricky one because if you go to your left you will get to the dining-room. The park rooms also have exits to the south.

I think there are no other tricky places, but just in case check all possible ways to get out of the room you are. To get out through the bottom of the screen (if possible) you could just click when the mouse is over the status bar (while being in walk mode). Only the two lowest pixels of the screen make the gui pop up so you shouldn't have much trouble with it.

I'm sorry if you found bugs where Garfield gets stuck. When I played it several times before releasing it I couldn't find any place where it happened, but, you know, perfect debugging is impossible. Try to save often just in case.

So it took less than a year...
What would be of me (and my damn dial-up connection) without those download managers? ;D

Kairus:
I'm really enjoying the game, although I'm stuck already... :-\

Just a few things I think I should tell you:
- I found what seems to be a bug. I received an error message while playing the game. If I remember it right, it happened when I tried to "Pick up" the door in the kitchen that leads 'outside'. Maybe you should check that out. ;)
The error is about a DisplayMessage with "Invalid message number to display" at Room 13 script line 222 (well, at least it's not 666 ;D ).
If you need more info just tell me and I'll try to upload a screenshot of the error message ;)
(I would have uploaded it already if only I could ACCESS my $@*&!#% freeweb account :( )

- This is not exactly a bug, but anyway:
When you're ON the table (in the kitchen - after climbing the chair) and use the action button on the table, Garfield says: "It's too high to climb just from here"
Well, you ARE THERE already.
Of course, nothing that a few 'hotspots' and 'if statements' won't do.
As RickJ would say: "It's just a SMOP!" (Small Matter Of Programming) ;D

Well, that's it.
I'll try to solve the puzzles which made me get stucked (sp?)
I "unintentionally" read the solution for them in some spoilers here ::)
Hope you manage to fix that bug I mentioned.

-Felipe-

EDIT: I'm sorry - I wrote this in NotePad and didn't realise the number of 'smilies' I was using...
Maybe I shoud see a doctor... I'm so addicted to those lil' faces! ;D

I am really enjoying this game and still playing.

I have experienced Garfield getting stuck in several screens. The one thing that I tried which helped was going back into Winsetup and changing to "playing in a window".   This really helped.     But now,  I have had a couple of fatal script errors that made the game crash..... but I can tolerate this.

For all of you who got stuck somewhere, I can only say it's very strange because when I played it, several times, it didn't got stuck in any place no matter how weirdly I moved around the screen or how many times I got to a screen. I really don't know what may be happening to you.

But I also write this to inform you that I have removed the game from the web site as PAWS Inc. told me it's a copyright infringement (yes, they sent me an email).

All I can say is I'm very sorry, I really didn't want to remove it, two years of working for just a few days of it published... :( And I can't even fix the possible bugs there are...

At least I'm glad some people liked it. :)

This is terrible news that you are having to remove the game for downloading.       I do not know much about the creation of characters,  but could you get around copywright laws by doing some minor surgery on Garfield such as making him skinny,  removing eyelids, or giving him a bob-tail or something?   Also,  change character names by a few letters?    The game is very good and has a good plot, animations and text....  and this is well demonstrated in the two years of work that it took in the making.

Sure glad that I downloaded when I did!  However,  I am stuck on getting Garfield to Jon's parents house.   Any tips/hints would be appreciated.

You might want to look into the exact details of the copyright(s) they believe you're infringing. I don't see how, with the proper warnings in the game and on the webpage as to the ownership of the characters, they can still think you're hurting their intellectual property.

Also, I'm pretty certain it'd be hard for them to take any kind of action on somebody in Uruguay.

I don't want to get you in a big mess or anything, but I'm pretty certain these companies threaten a lot more than they can actually do.

the owners of the actual version (like me) could try to finish the game, report bugs...

maybe if you add the script in the rooms' repeatedly_execute:

if (GetWalkableAreaAt(player.x,player.y)<=0) MoveToWalkableArea(GetPlayerCharacter());

Garfield won't be stuck all the times (this script was proposed to solve the same problem in a Zor's game....I don't know if it works).

I'm having some major problems with Garfield getting stuck - thankfully I've saved so I don't have to keep restarting - but it's very aggravating!  :-\
First stick was just after I gave the flower. 2nd time I didn't do that just gave lasagne - got stuck! 3rd time didn't do that went to park and got stuck by Nermal. 4th time didn't do that went to tv station - guess what? Got stuck!  >:(
So can anyone give me any help? Oh and regarding this;
Quotemaybe if you add the script in the rooms' repeatedly_execute:

if (GetWalkableAreaAt(player.x,player.y)<=0) MoveToWalkableArea(GetPlayerCharacter());

Garfield won't be stuck all the times (this script was proposed to solve the same problem in a Zor's game....I don't know if it works).
I don't understand what it means - and wouldn't have the faintest idea of how to do it - so you'd have to explain it really simply!  ::)

aww, man, I expected such a comment, about the "christ sake" part... but cmon... now stop trying to judge me on every little thing. And bytheway, he didn't made any copyright violation. He made is as freeware/fanware, and that's allowed by the law. It's just that the creator himself, does not want it, so that makes it not very kind to keep it online, but definatley not ILLEGAL!

This is a very good game...sory about what happened.  Nobody should be attacking with bad comments!

Now......for those of us who do have it, it would be nice to be able to finish the game.  So far it doesn't appear that anyone has come up with the solution to getting the ball of yarn from the mutants or being able to find a replacement somewhere else.

If anyone has the answer to this I know there are a lot of people that could have their frustration reduced by knowing.  Please????

This may come in handy in situations such as this:

http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/

That is Title 17 of the United States code.  It goes into detail on copyrights and infringment.  I don't think it covers amature adventure games,  but it is interesting to read none the less.

Kidiri:  I suggested to rebuild the game with this little add. It should move the character if he is (position x/y) outside of a walkable area.

Anyways, I think that there's something wrong with the cats/alley: all the bugs began after entering in the alley.

Minimi/SSH/...: maybe, they try to control the production of games because they're thinking to sell some games based on the movie.

I quite afraid about the AGS projects Sam and Max and Indiana Jones...

Lucas Arts doesn't want to make new adventure games...but they will also try to destroy any amateur effort (and the "Fan/amateur game" trick won't be a good defense)

Is the sticking problem because I went to the alleyway with both the lasagne and the flower?
If so maybe I need to restart the game and go to each cat seperately?  :-\
Following a suggestion on hints and tips I did manage to give the flower away but I really can't do anything else because of this sticky problem! Believe me I've tried - I've also reduced the game to playing in a window - still stickyness though  :(

Look, guys, I really don't know what happens to you. In my computer it hadn't ever gotten stuck. I played it again yesterday too see if it happened to me, but nothing. I don't understand it! No way to solve it now, as I don't think I'll be uploading it again.

It's my fault, alright? I admit it. Before publishing the game I was worried about what could happen and I asked a lawyer who told me to just upload the game and inform them. Not asking for permission, just letting them now. Yeah, bad mistake, I know. I should've just uploaded it and waited until they found out for themselves (probably never) to remove it. That's what everyone else did... I wanted to do it in a more 'legal' way, but it's impossible.

Now it's done and there's no way back. :( I just didn't think they would react that fast, I thought perhaps they would just ignore it or something, maybe they didn't even read those kind of mails, yeah, I'm an idiot. I have asked another lawyer now and she didn't give me much hope, only trying to negociate. But I don't think there's much to negotiate about as this game has absolutely no commercial value.

Changing the game so it doesn't infringe the copyrights would mean spending a lot more time remaking the sprites, something I won't do. Just changing the names wouldn't be enough, not to mention that it's something I don't want to do, because my primary reason for making this game was seeing Garfield in a real adventure game (what will never happen, as it seems). So I think the project ends here. Maybe I'll learn this time. :(

That's all, I'm an idiot.

I feel better now...

And for those of you who are stuck with the ball of yarn puzzle, just forget the mutants playing, ok? That one won't help.

Why not just keep it on the site..but not make it directly accessable?

So when people go to your site, they don't see a link to your game..but
if they alter the link a bit to something like:

www.someplace.com/monkey.zip

Then they will be able to enjoy your fruits of labor..

I hate anything that smacks of injustice and it's not like you were doing the game for cash.

So I wrote an email of complaint and sent it to everyone that I could on their website!
Their games incidentally are rubbish by comparison.

I hope that it helps!  :-\

I'm very sorry to hear that you had to take your game down.  You did a lot of hard work and you have to be really disappointed.
Czar is right.  The same thing happened to Spyros's "Hugo's House of Horror Remake." (HHH Remake (http://atticwindow.adventuredevelopers.com/gac.php?cmd=showGame&id=8).)  I think for awhile he gave the game out privately if someone sent him an email and requested it but I don't know if he does that now.  Maybe you could consider doing something like that.
This is really a great game but I, too, am having problems with the walkable areas.  I'm going to try to figure out a way around them but it would be great if you could find a way to fix the little stuff like that and redistribute the game.  There's a way out there for redistribution, I'm sure of it but you may have to do a little sneaking to get around it.  You didn't do anything illegal, I assure you, and you were trying to do the honorable thing by telling PAWS.  They shouldn't have reacted the way they did.
What did they say to you anyway?  Do you still have the email?  If you do, I'd like to read it and I think a few others have mentioned they would too.  It'd be great if you could post it.  Maybe that way we can help you figure out the best way to fool the experts.  ;)

Yes, this whole-business is a shame - supposedly, fan-games are automatically free from this nonsense, because they exist for non-profit reasons, and they've been a labour of love - like Night of the Hermit. In fact, if this were an issue, many great games out there wouldn't exist at all.

Anyway, let me tell you, great work on the game! (Although, whatever possessed you to add the Pipes puzzle??? Wonderful scripting, though) It's well worth fighting for.  The only flaw is that hateful-bug-you-can't-reproduce, but apart from that... well, let's just say you've got Garfield's spirit perfectly. It's there! That's Garfield!

Ok, Czar gave me this idea. It doesn't sound too coherent but maybe it's something I should've stated in the readme file or something.

In this game Garfield does not walk by default, that it, if you are not in Walk mode the cat will probably not move to most of the hotspots. He will only walk to the places that are useful. For example, in Action mode, if you click on a door he will probably go and open the door without you telling him to move towards it, but if you click on something that hasn't been assigned an action he won't move. Now, Czar told me he didn't realized that he had to be in walk mode to walk and then he thought he had the same effect about Garfield getting stuck everywhere, until he found out he only had to set to walk mode again and everything would work fine. Are you sure isn't it this what's happening to you?

There are several ways to switch to walk mode, press 'w', press escape, click the right button of your mouse or select "walk to" from the verbs gui. Please try that out and if still doesn't work, try switching to action mode while Garfield is stuck and then open a door or something. If Garfield is really in a non-walkable area then the door would open without Garfield getting to it. Otherwise, he will walk to the door and open it.

I would also like to know if absolutely everyone is having this problem, I can't believe it's only my computer the one that can make this game work fine!!

Nostradamus:

When you're outside the store, try to wear the hat (action mode then click on hat) and Garfield will tell you more or less what you need to make a disguise to enter the store.

In the late stages of the game
Spoiler
(I only had to get the hat, and then I could go make the lasagna and the proceed to the TV station with all the other cats)

I found myself stuck on the park, What happened was, I'd walk ANYWHERE and then, after he took a few steps, he'd freeze in a place. Always after the same amount of steps (I had saved my game. I'm sorry, I overwrote it, otherwise I'd give it to you). He'd keep animating, but no matter what I tried, he'd never walk. Yes, I tried setting the cursor mode to walk, and like I said, he animated. But he was stuck.
Also, if I tried to climb the tree at that point, the game would be waiting for Garfield to get close to the tree (this whether I had already moved or not). But since he'd stop moving after that SAME NUMBER OF STEPS, the game would hang, as it was STILL waiting for him to get close.

Other areas prone to this behaviour are outside the TV station, the barn and the alley. These are the areas that I remember as giving me the worst trouble.

I don't know if this'll help anyone else, but I thought I'd share in case it does.
For a little while the game kept freezing up on my computer.  Things were just getting worse as time went by.  So I decided I'd try something and deleted all the files from the game I was currently battling with and reinstalled it from the original .exe file.  I didn't redownload or anything, just installed again from the same file as before.  And it worked.  I haven't had a freeze up with it at any of the places they kept happening before.  Now, this solution does mean you'd lose any progress you'd made, but I personally didn't think it was that hard to remember what I'd already done, and I've progressed a lot farther now because I can do things I couldn't before.
It seems a little weird but it worked for me, maybe it'll work for some of you too.

OK I went to the shop and returne home and got stuck with the infamous no-more-walking-bug, so I guess that's it for me with this game.

Kairus I just want to say that storywise, puzzlewise and graphicwise (just invented some new words!) the game was really great but the GUI was REALLY bad. It was annoying that you had to take the pointer down every time you want to do something and it was more annoying that if you wanted to walk down from a screen you'd have to fight the GUI so it won't block the way.
Title: Re:Garfield: Attack of the mutant lasagna - FINISHED!!!!
Post by: Kairus on Sun 14/03/2004 23:12:08
Nostradamus did you read the readme file? There's another way to switch between modes you don't need to get the cursor down to click a button all the time, there are keys that let you do that, generally the first character of the word, that is:

W for Walk mode
T for Talk mode
A for Action mode
and so on...

And I didn't realise the GUI was such a problem when trying to move to the south of the room, the GUI only pops up at position y >= 198, that is, only the two lowest pixels, you can go south of the room by clicking at 190 <= y < 198, like eight pixels above the GUI-popup. I really didn't think that was going to be that hard...

Sorry to bring this back again, and sorry if someone did it before, but I want to ask something...

What about if AGSers make a webpage (h t t p://w w w.Fangames.c o m, for example) where all the games related with copyrighted stuff are uploaded?

I think they couldn't just close it, and they couldn't pursuit us, if we upload the game as "anonymous developers".

The webmaster could have a "neutral" name (FanGamesWebmaster @ hotmail.c o m)

That would ever avoid the necessity of being "anonymous developers", because we just make games, it is not our fault if somebody collects them and puts them in his webpage.

Is it possible? Or there is a way to discover who is the webmaster? Can the lawyers close an "anonymous" website?
Title: Re:Garfield: Attack of the mutant lasagna - FINISHED!!!!
Post by: AGA on Sat 20/03/2004 21:44:08
You cannot have a proper, paid-for website under an anonymous name.  Free hosting like Geocities and Lycos would be the only way, but after 10 downloads it would get shut down because of bandwidth limits anyway :P
Title: Re:Garfield: Attack of the mutant lasagna - FINISHED!!!!

Hi!  Just downloaded this game using the link at the top of the page.  I noticed it didn't come with the uninstaller, though.  Is there anyway someone could send me that little file?  I'm not looking to uninstall the game, since I just started it, but I want to make sure I have all my bases covered.  :)

BTW, the game appears with my programs in the Start menu, but not in Add/Remove programs, so if me or anyone else needed to uninstall it for some reason, we would have to delete the folder.  But I like having the uninstaller for these purposes.

Sorry to sound so obsessed about an uninstaller.  It's a fun little game!

It may not have the best graphics and may have a lot of bugs and glitches (according to what I've read here but I've encountered none myself so far), but it's just so, as someone put it... GARFIELD! It's the most fun I've had playing an AGS game in ages. The first game I've played in awhile that has actually been interesting, fun, entertaining and has made me want to keep playing as opposed to pushing myself to continue. Even though your english isn't perfect, the general dialogue is very Garfield-esque and as a Garfield fan, I'm very happy to see a tribute to him that captures his spirit ^_^

Now - in regards to that messy PAWS business, take it from me, they CAN'T stop you from offering this game on a webpage, especially with all the disclaimers you use. You aren't selling the game or making ANY profit on it whatsoever so they cannot tell you to take it down.

They can ask you, and they can get mad or whatever the hell they like, but they can't force you. You're not insulting them or slandering them in any way. You've made a non-profit fan game that only a relatively small amount of people will ever see, and it's because you LOVE Garfield. That PAWS did this, especially after you were kind enough to let them know about it, really pisses me off and they're in my bad books now.

If you want to respect their wishes, then that's fine but it's an incredible shame for such a great game and 2 years of work and expectations to go down the drain because PAWS decides to be anal and irrational.

My point being that legally they can't stop you from distributing the game for free. Just put it back on the website and don't tell them about it. I'm sure they won't check.

Or do tell them about it, if you're feeling bold because they can only ask you to take it down, not demand.

This is too good a game to fade into the shadows!

Don't worry about the uninstaller, just delete the folder where it is and the start menu folder, too. The installer was made with a self-extracting RAR so it doesn't mess with registry entries, that's why it's not in Add/Remove Programs. I made this self-extracting file with start menu shortcuts because I have friends that are... well.. quite lame at installing things so if I just gave them the self-extracting file they probably wouldn't be able to run the game after installing it. So.. remember... when you're tired of the game, just press 'delete' over the folder.

Kinoko: Thanks for you comments, I'm glad to see another great Garfield fun :D I wish I find and solve this strange bug one day, but I don't have a clue of why it's happening yet. You know I've sent another letter to PAWS Inc asking for permission and giving several (from my point of view) good reasons why I should upload it, but it's been like two weeks and no answer. That's why I'm a little hopeless right now... I have talked to a lawyer and she told me there's no way, if they don't give me permission, they can really sue me and send me to jail and all that.

Well afraid to say, its a terrific game but have sent it to recycle bin unfinished.  Have done everything that has been suggested but still keep getting sticky walk bug.

Everytime I complete pipe puzzle I couldn't get out of room..............thought I had got it beat at one stage by re playing it and not giving ball to cat............yep I could get out of room - but guess what - as soon as I went back to park and gave ball to cat I froze again................really hope someone can sort this problem out.

Hi there,

I don't know if you are aware of this already, but there's a Garfield movie being made. Of course, it's no cartoon... nooo. Since this is the year 2004 there has to be a weird looking CG-Garfield.

There's the official site: http://www.garfieldmovie.com (http://www.garfieldmovie.com)

I don't like this. I don't like this at all.

What the...?! That's not fair, why couldn't they do it like Toy Story. Oh the humanity!

In regards to the Garfield stops walking bug in the game, it would apear that no matter what it is you are doing, you only get so many steps, knowing what to do would mean that you doeverything quicker than someone who didn't.

Why do they have to make THAT ugly thing the movie Garfield...SOB

You are right, that CG cat is really awful.

Look I've tried playing the Garfield game again and going back and forth on every room and waste time walking and rewalking over the same rooms and looking to everything and all that and I didn't get the bug even once.

Maybe I should recompile it when a new version of AGS comes or ask for someone to compile it on another system (I use win98, maybe the bug only happens on later windows versions, I don't know...).

But, if PAWS doesn't let me upload it again, I don't think it will be possible. I'm sorry. :(

I've got Arlene and Guido ready to meet me at the TV station, Jon's mother has the ingredients for the soup, and I have both a piece of string and the rope.
My guess is that I need to do something to the string to make it into a ball, but I have no idea how. The spinning machine won't accept it, Nermal won't take it, and Jon's mother won't turn it into a ball either. The clown at the TV show has balls (I thought maybe to steal one and then wrap the string around it), but I can't get at those either.

Hey Kairus, Just realised I haven't been back to comment since I downloaded the game. I have to say, nicely done. I haven't had time to get very far, but it's pretty cool. I reckon Odie's the best done character so far. I love his animations. Very nice.

The only 'bad' thing I've really noticed so far, and this is purely from the point of view of your game fitting in with the Garfield universe, is the occasional 'Goddamn it' kind of comment. The comics have always seemed inanely pure on this front, they tend to say 'Darn' a lot. I dunno, just something I noticed.

But nice work. I'm pleased you got it out. Maybe I should work on finishing my game one day  ;)

Cute, Scummbuddy :) Very cute. Great, now I have an uncontrollable need for playdo.

After talking with others, I realise my comments earlier about how Paws couldn't legally touch you were probably wrong. Apparently, companies CAN sue for this sort of thing, which is LUDICROUS! I had no idea they could sue for things like fan art. It's ridiculous. Even more ridiculous is that apparently you can get past the law by making your "fan" work satirical. If you can prove your work is satirical of the original, it's ok. If your work is in loving appreciation of the original, you can be sued. I'm going to make it one of my quiet ambitions in life to see that these laws are changed. I may not do the changing, but I sure hope to see it!

Once again, great game. It'd be a pity to change it but probably even moreso for noone else to be able to play it.

Yep. Makes you think, don't it? I wonder if that's why LucasArts allowed Night of the Hermit to exist. Then again, I guess some companies are bigger dickheads than others, since Sierra allowed KQ1VGA and 2 to exist, not to mention my remake of Larry 2...

Couldn't we sign a petition, or something, like is being done for Sam&Max 2?

Summbuddy:
Those clay dolls are really wonderful! Did you make them? Excellent job! Now will you do a frame-by-frame animated clay version of the Attack of the mutant lasagna? ;)

Kinoko:
I'm aware they can sue me, I've talked to a lawyer whose specialization is about copyright and authorship matters. I don't think my work can be considered as 'satirical', it falls perfectly under the 'derivative work' label and you can't publish such work without the permission of the copyright owner.
I haven't had a reply from PAWS and it's been more like three weeks since I sent my second letter to them. Should I consider this as an implicit permission...?
Quote

Yeah, let's start a revolution!!!
But later on some evil people will start making money about other one's work. I really wouldn't like it to happen if it was me who had invented the characters. But I'm just not making any money out of this, you know, I never expected to get any money. I knew this game would only be truly appreciated in these forums and places like it where people still loves adventure games. It can't be commercial.

redruM:
Is it worth trying to gather sings for a petition? I don't think PAWS will allow it if they can't get any money out of it. That's something I told them in my second letter. There's no way to make money out of this game, I used Sam and Max 2 as an example to support my point of view. I offered them to take my game as their own and upload it to their site with the changes that might me necessary. No reply... they won't reply... there's no hope...
Are you sure Lucas and Sierra have allowed those games to exist? Are you sure they are aware of their existence at all? Maybe they aren't.

Sure it's worth it! They CAN and have the POWER to decide whether or not you can release your game, but surely someone in there must REALIZE that doesn't mean they have to USE it against a game made out of sheer love. Not to mention that it might increase their popularity, make other audiences aware of it. Just by requesting a link to be added to the readme, you'd be sponsoring them. I mean, look at me! I had NO idea PAWS inc even existed, I though Garfield was dead!

QuoteNo reply... they won't reply... there's no hope...
They've got a stick the size of Manhattan up their ass. Try flooding them with e-mails, once every two days. That works, sometimes. They may be dismissing you out of hand, but try e-mailing them repeatedly, sometimes with the same e-mail but with a sarcastic post-script.

QuoteAre you sure Lucas and Sierra have allowed those games to exist? Are you sure they are aware of their existence at all? Maybe they aren't.
I don't know about NOTH, nor about Larry 2... but I KNOW that Sierra has been aware of KQVGA for a long time. That's even something TIERRA mentioned in an OLD interview for the Inventory! And besides, really, how could they NOT know? It was the game of the year in all amateur adventure gaming communities, and it expanded to several abandonware sites!

My advice is, fight.

I just downloaded this game and spent a good 2 hours playing. I love this game. I loved Garfield as a kid, obsessed over the strip. I nearly peed myself when I saw the old cat from the pound. I've not finished the game yet, but I shall. A wonderful homage to the character, despite the rough language. It was a bit odd to see Garfield think the word 'damn'. Kicking Odie was a delight. I'm going to bed now, but I'm sure I'll be dreaming of the game. You did a good job.

Well, here's the hard facts - any games that serve as hommage and are a labour of love must be distributed under the piracy label.

To hell with it, I say. I got MY copy of Garfield, and there's a link everyone can get to, and if that fails, KaZaa and EMule still exist. Thay can't stop us from making them, only openly distributing them. Big deal. It's not as if we wanted to sell them anyway.

My sister just came across the now infamous 'walking in place' bug. She was in the market trying to pay for goods. She had gone up to the counter, saved her game, and when she tried to walk, garfield was running in place. She did restart her game, and I asked her to save in a different slot, just in case the original save file would ever come in handy for something. Though that suggestion could have stemmed from my disliking of throwing anything out. THe instant you get rid of something, you find you need it after all.

I'm glad your labor of love has created such a delightful game, Kairus. It was worth waiting for, despite the bug. I now hate PAWS Inc., and shall no longer shell out cash for garfield related merchandise. While I still believe Jim Davis would have no objections to your game being shared with others,  it seems the money-hungry commercial beast that is corperation has blah blah rant rant piss moan groan...

Thanks, Bruised Weasel. I have something to tell you all, ladies and gentlemen:

Last night, before I even knew Bruised Weasel had some possibly useful savegames to show me I started playing Garield for quite a while, and it happened. The bug came to me as it came to many of you. I've been tracking it since then and reduced the possible places where it happens, Bruised Weasel savegames seem to be corroborating my hypothesis.

The problem seems to happen only in rooms where there's a change of zoom level. That is, Garfield gets stuck somewhere in between a change from one zoom level to another one. I'm not sure why this happens and I think I will not be able to solve it. I posted another message with more information I could find (or infer) about the bug in the technical forums. I hope Chris can help me with this one, because I think it's a technical problem rather than a scripting one.

At least the getting stuck bug. If I have enough time I may also add the possibility to skip the cutscenes so you don't have to wait too much to get the progress you've gotten know.
And what about PAWS...? well.. I don't know, they haven't replied...

Can't wait for the bug free version..............I gave up wth it 'cos no matter how many times I replayed it, I always ended up unable to get out of certain rooms, which was a shame 'cos its a brill game.

I regret it very much, but I was forced to delete the game as well without finishing it.
I restarted from the beginning several times praying that Garfield wouldn't get stuck again.
But finally he inevitably got stuck.
It's a great pity really.
Such bad luck for this game - PAWS, the numerous bugs...
And on the other hand - such indisputable high quality.
I am really very sorry!

Wow, it really looks like you put a lot of time and effort in this game. I couldn't get the full version (all the links which were posted are dead) but I did manage to get the demo version. I hope it works out between you and PAWS. I read somewhere that the reason U.S. companies are so protective of intellectual property is that if they are aware of a copyright infringement, and they don't act on it, then they can lose their copyright. In Japan however copyright laws are much stronger, the copyright holder cannot lose it as easily, so fan-based non-profit projects are much more tolerated. (Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, so please don't take this in lieu of legal advice)

Well, I think I've run through the demo, but I want to be sure so is there anything left to do after
Spoiler
I have woke up Jon, kicked Odie, unleashed the lasagna mutant, got the key to the garden, got the stick, got the cat hair, got the blanket, got the shirts and pants, got the cheese and gave it to Squeak, got the key to the fridge, got all the food, got the scissors, unsealed the container with the scissors
[close]

Also, if I choose 'Action' then select any inventory item, the game crashes, so I'm wondering if there is a way to open the mysterious container. Man I wish I had the full version.

Hey everybody.

I also want to let you know that it is too bad that PAWS is being so butthole-ish about this.  Your game is terrific, and had a blast playing... (well, up until I got the infamous no-walking bug, which coincendently also happened in another game, by another author, The Adventures of Fatman", and I was never able to finish that game either *sob*)  Anyway, I think your game is fabulous.

For my take on the PAWS thing... if you want to hear it. :-)  I don't think it's completely about money.  See, I've often wondered about why they shut down fan games and such.  I've always thought it was really stupid myself.  I mean, it's not like your making any money on it, and it's not like they're losing any money on it.  But last night, I was thinking about this, and I thought about something no one had mentioned before.  Now, although this is a fan-based game, and you have the giant disclaimer at the beginning.... There is a possibility that someone could play it and still associate it with PAWS.  Lets say there was something offensive in it... not that there is anything offensive in yours, but there's the possibility.  All of a sudden, people start associating PAWS with that offensive material.  Even though there is a disclaimer, it's already too late.  The word is already out there.

Ok, I hope that made sense... I'm not defending PAWS by any means.  I think it is totally ridiculous that they won't let you post the game.  I just wanted to throw that thought out there to give everybody an insight to the way this company may be thinking.  I could also be totally off base on this one!

Me too, PAWS suck. Your game is great. Though the walking bug happened to me a few times (especially when it happens right after a restoring), I managed to beat it. I don't know if this helps or not, but I restarted the game and did everything I was supposed to without any unnessisarily things. There should be some kind of petition thingy.

Aw hell!  >:(
This is stupid. I don't know much about law, but fact is:

You're not giving away anything with your game people could buy from PAWS otherwise. YOU made the game. YOU drew characters and did all the crap. Like, when I get a child and want to name him "Garfield" then what? Have to pay to them for using that name? Stupid.
What does logic say?

-> It's a company. Sells comics, games, cartoons etc.
-> I don't think PAWS has "selling rights for amateur games" in their working license.
-> So they can't and don't sell such a thing as allowance to make a fangame.
-> So you haven't taken anything from them and you're not selling anything related to them. It's a freeware game, after all and they don't have right to sell it too. It's yours.
-> so you also haven't made any material damage to them.
-> and any other kind of damage is about impossible to prove

QuoteAll of a sudden, people start associating PAWS with that offensive material. Even though there is a disclaimer, it's already too late. The word is already out there.
This is stupid. I could write "garfield sucks balls!!!" onto wall on largest street and pee on it. Police would only punish me under paragraph of vandalism. This is democracy, right? Right for opinion and everything. If making games would be easier and not based on love making them, hategames could be as popular as fangames.

Word is ALLOWED to be out there, good or bad. Or newspapers would be shut down immediately aswell. And our critics lounge. And everything else that reflects opinions of different people.

I suggest to research every bit of law around that case and maybe you could even make some money from a that game. If they really are upset enough to sue you, that is.

...actually, I think were very heroic. We, simple, creative individuals, fight for entire dead games genre, and against big companies. What's going on? Is CJ actually a fighter gathering his army for world domination? Sound like a movie "Fight Club" already.

Jim Davis did the groundwork years ago, without which this game wouldn't exist.

You don't, since Garfield is a name that was around before the fat cat, including Leon Garfield the writer and James Garfield the US president.

Unfortunately, logic and law are not always compatible...

But they do have "selling rights for computer games". There have been several commercial Garfield computer games to date. The sad fact that they all suck balls doesn't change that.

It's not about causing the company material damage. Actually it is, because people who want to use the Garfield likeness have to pay PAWS, Inc. to use it. Whether they make money with it or not is their problem.
When someone comes along, takes the Garfield likeness without paying and makes money with it, the company potentially loses money. And how can they be sure Kairus doesn't make money from his game?

Not quite the same. First of all, graffiti is obviously not an established form of publishing. Computer games are, more or less.
Secondly, writing "Garfield sucks balls" is free speech. Mass-publishing images of Garfield actually sucking balls might be considered harmful to the company, even if you do add small print that you're not associated with PAWS, because people tend to look at the image and forget about the small print. No matter how large it is written (see Kairus' game).
For example, there are several instances of Garfield saying "god damn" in the game. Potentially people could be highly offended by this and I doubt PAWS would ever authorize such an act in their own material.

Definitely, I'd love to be proven wrong.
Quote

No, no, no!
QuoteIf they really are upset enough to sue you, that is.
Oh, you mean from winning a lawsuit against them. Forget it. Their lawyers likely earn more than the whole bunch of us put together.

Please don't think I'm taking the side of PAWS and their lawyers here, I'm just trying to play devil's advocate, as it were, and show the other viewpoint.
I'd love it if the company would just say "a little fan production won't hurt us", and if they had actually taken a look at the game, they probably would, but they are busy guys (what with the shitty movie coming up and all) and very likely get dozens of requests like these per week, so they prefer to play it safe and ban all fan productions from the start.

I wish it were different. If Kairus hadn't informed them, chances are they never would've bothered. I doubt they employ people to surf the web to look for games that infringe their copyrights.
I myself have written a text adventure based on "The Sandman", a comic book by DC/Vertigo Comics on my old Amstrad CPC a few years ago (http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Alley/1842/amsgames.html (http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Alley/1842/amsgames.html)), it's been up on my website for years and nobody from DC's law department has ever bothered me about it. I may yet remake it for AGS some day. If that day ever comes, I sure as hell won't tell DC Comics about it.

Quote
...actually, I think were very heroic. We, simple, creative individuals, fight for entire dead games genre, and against big companies.

Actually, we're not. We're not fighting "against" anyone. I'm not sure we're even meant to be fighting at all. The big companies aren't even noticing us most of the time. And that's a good thing.

Sure, by catering to a very select market and to a "dead genre" as you put it, we're not very noticeable, and sometimes it sucks not being in the spotlight and working unseen and unappreciated by the masses. But sometimes it's a blessing as well: What they don't see, they don't sue.

Dang. I was looking forward to playing the final version because I had finally found what I initially thought was the full game but it turned out to be the demo....anyway I'm a big Garfield fan and was hoping to play the full game , it always ticks me off when people get in trouble over things like this because it's not really hurting anyone so why is it such a big deal? *sighs*

===============================
I don't know how often Raku visits but I hope
he sees this and I'm sorry in advance that this has nothing to do with Garfield but I didn't want to annoy everyone by making a seperate thread because Raku's comment is in this thread...any way - Raku : I just joined the forums over at the website that used to be Tierra ( it's now called some thing like "anonymous game developers" ) and asked about the KQ parody. They told me that they did stop work on it and from what I can tell they don't have any plans on restarting it any time soon , may be not even ever.
So , no , Josh Mandel nor any one else is going to be doing the voice for King Graham in a Tierra / AGD KQ parody because they abandoned the project. I don't know about any other KQ parodies but , again , Tierra / AGD will not be making one.  Mmmkay?  Sorry to sound gripey but it annoys me when people imply that I'm wrong about some thing when I am pretty darn sure I'm right.

Kairus: Sierra are neglecting the VGA remakes, and lucas have already closed down two fan projects, and seeing as there are more to come, will most probably close down MI 1,5/ not that I hope so, Im just stating facts - they closed scurvyliver's project for using ripped graphics/.
I disagree , at least on the Sierra thing. I don't know what you mean by neglecting , but last time I checked , Sierra no longer makes adventure games any way....so why would they make a big deal about people doing fan versions of older games? I could understand if they got upset about a fan doing a remake of an old sports game since that's why many of the people who worked on the adventure games got layed off in the first place...the president or whatever was more into sports and didn't give a flying fig about adventure games. ( *growls* ) I don't remember seeing any news about lucasfilm / lucassoft so I don't know about that but as far as I know "New" Sierra either doesn't know or doesn't care about fanmade versions of old adventure games and they don't make adventure games , while "Old" Sierra totally is in love with the idea of fans remaking older games , in fact , there was going to be a King's Quest parody and the guy who voice acted in the older games was going to be working on the project / as the voice for King Graham again! Eventually though they decided to trash the project , not because of anything Sierra stated but the group working on it ( Tierra soft...they have a new name now...I can't remember it ) stopped because they were starting to feel as though it was too rude...They stopped themselves ..not Sierra, so , in my opinion , if Sierra did give a flying fig about this sort of thing , then they aren't doing anything about it. Weird , eh? I'm kinda glad though , I'd hate it they started cracking down on stuff because it's almost always over something stupid when big companies crack down on stuff. Why don't they go after people that deserve it , like if anybody that is selling games that they didn't buy in the first place?!

btw , in case anybody needs to know , I posted this in the thread instead of just pm-ing Vel because I wanted people to see what I knew about the whole Sierra thing.
Hope that's ok. Sorry if I've upset anybody , especially you Vel because I don't mean to upset anybody.

Queen Kara: Just thought you might want to know that according to an interview with the Tierra team, they decided not to use the original voice in the parody because they didn't want it to be associated with the dirty language of the parody. They did say however that they would use Josh Mandel (the original King Graham voice actor) in their KQ1 remake.

Just to add my two cents to the copyright discussion above, I've heard that one of the reasons companies are so protective is that if they *know* that someone else is using their stuff without permission, but nothing is done about it, then the company could potentially lose its copyright because it failed to assert its ownership, according to US jurisprudence. I know that some companies have lost trademarks because the term became generic (like Kleenex) but has anyone heard of a case where somebody 'stole' a copyrighted work because the original holder failed to send a "cease and desist" letter?

I had this wierd feeling of Deja Vu when reading the above post... almost the same thing had already been posted a while ago, by the same person. I don't see the point.

And I've already said a lot about my standing towards this. The only thing I have to add is that this is probably our fault, in a way - the public's fault.

Here's what I mean - awhile ago, I read, in this very forum, that someone had some problem with some real OLD infogrames game, called them on the phone, talked to Bruno Bonnel himself, and actually got shipped a disk with a patch. All as friendly as you please. But that was then, and back then PAWS would probably not be this strict. But illegality is easy nowadays, I mean, just look at E-Mule or KaZaa! No one can afford to be friendly, they don't have the time, they're too busy protecting their interests. They can't know fore sure whether Kairus is a threat, so they play it safe.

Not to say that I agree. I almost want to email them and tell them I've got MY copy and I'm giving it to my friends and there's nothing they can do about it!

Since you spent a lot of time and effort making this game it would be a shame to throw it away

You can get around most of the copyright problems by changing the name of the game and ingame text by substituting "garfield" and other copyrighted names for others

The graphics on the other hand are a "grey" area and it would be hard for Paws inc. to prove copyright violations especially since they are all your own artwork, however companies like disney have tried to shut down fan websites that display fan created artwork of their characters, I am not sure what the current legal situation is, can anyone comment?

Although if you are really worried, just changing the color of garfield would null any objections they could raise.  Dont give up on your game.

http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-general.html.

One solution might be to upload the game on a server in a country that does not have copyright stipulations with the U.S.

I researched a little bit and noticed the Fair Use part of copyright:

Taken from: http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the rights accorded to the owner of copyright is the right to reproduce or to authorize others to reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords. This right is subject to certain limitations found in sections 107 through 118 of the copyright act (title 17, U.S. Code). One of the more important limitations is the doctrine of “fair use.” Although fair use was not mentioned in the previous copyright law, the doctrine has developed through a substantial number of court decisions over the years. This doctrine has been codified in section 107 of the copyright law.

Section 107 contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered “fair,” such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:

the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

the nature of the copyrighted work;

amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
The distinction between “fair use” and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission.

The 1961 Report of the Register of Copyrights on the General Revision of the U.S. Copyright Law cites examples of activities that courts have regarded as fair use: “quotation of excerpts in a review or criticism for purposes of illustration or comment; quotation of short passages in a scholarly or technical work, for illustration or clarification of the author's observations; use in a parody of some of the content of the work parodied; summary of an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report; reproduction by a library of a portion of a work to replace part of a damaged copy; reproduction by a teacher or student of a small part of a work to illustrate a lesson; reproduction of a work in legislative or judicial proceedings or reports; incidental and fortuitous reproduction, in a newsreel or broadcast, of a work located in the scene of an event being reported.”

Copyright protects the particular way an author has expressed himself; it does not extend to any ideas, systems, or factual information conveyed in the work.

The safest course is always to get permission from the copyright owner before using copyrighted material. The Copyright Office cannot give this permission.

When it is impracticable to obtain permission, use of copyrighted material should be avoided unless the doctrine of “fair use” would clearly apply to the situation. The Copyright Office can neither determine if a certain use may be considered “fair” nor advise on possible copyright violations. If there is any doubt, it is advisable to consult an attorney.

FL-102, June 1999
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

People with common sense can see that your game is for non-profit and is educational because you used it to better your skills in the art of computer game development using AGS.

That's more than enough to give PAWS the finger and tell them to suck it. :) At least, that's my take.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BTW: This is a great game. I do hope you fix that glitch so one day I'll be able to finish it.

This is a pretty cool game, challenging puzzles for sure.  I think I may be done for though now that I've gotten to the arcade game with the pipes.  Woah, that is just wicked tough!!  I'm usually okay with arcade games, but this one is making me insane.  :P

Hi!

You must use the same letters (capitals or not, pay attention, it's case sensitive) in the code (eg opfNn). And you can only get one or two files a day with the same ip from the underdogs: so if you've a dynamic one, just hang out and connect again for new one(s) ;)

You can also try to get the exe-rar files, they're four, I think.

I just saw the movie that came out about Garfield recently. It is good. I ain't gonna revel much else except that  J. love Hewlett ;Dplays the vet so You know it's gonna be fun and sexy) it's kinda loosely based on the basis for this game but with some added twists like John Being Addicted to the vet(won't stop bothering her) and Garfield actully showing a guilty conseisce in the end. It's a big difference from the cartoon to the big screen....

Wow! It's nice to see that after all this time my game is still in the first page of game announcements :) that means it's made a lot of noise. I haven't been able to work on anything about the game lately, I've had too much to do for University, but I promise I will think about uploading a bug-free version (at least the getting stuck bug) of the game as soon as I finish my exams (hopefully next week), I don't know yet if I should upload it. You know, with all this movie stuff going around, I think these guys might be trying to protect their product even more these days...

Ok, guys, I'm back.
I've recompiled the game and fixed some things, seems that the getting stuck bug (thanks to CJ) has gone. Now I don't know if I should upload it or what. What do you think? Do you think I could have any problems with this? Maybe there's someone who could host a mirror or something... I'm very sorry for the people that got tired of the game because of that bug and finally sent it to the trashbin, I hope they can finish the game now (if I upload the fixed version). Should I finally post it in the AGS games list? Enlighten me, please.

Well, I say you should upload it, but PAWS wouldn't be amused if it found out... maybe you should keep it "underground", like GAC's "Hugo's House of Horrors". PAWS might check the AGS game list (although it probably won't), but it's a safe bet it won't bother to visit the forums. Just upload it to some "secret-ish" place and say, in this thread, "if you want it, email me", or something.

Well that0s my 2 cents, at least.

Right when I saw the intro movie, I knew that this would stay true to the comic strip created by Jim Davis. I love the part "But do not underestimate Monday, for it has devilish tricks up its sleeves." Garfield is back and better than ever! But I'm sorta pathetic when playing this game. I'm stuck completely at the beginning. Could you write some sort of walkthrough for idiots like me, without giving away any of the funny jokes? I always read Garfield daily, so finishing this game will be a real treat for me.

Looks like all four cats (you and three others) aren't ready to start... ;)

And about the pipe-puzzle:
Spoiler
First one quick note: This isn't really 'a puzzle', more like arcade, so it's about strategy and quick thinking, not solving anything (well in a way solving, but... I won't get into that)

OK, here's it shortly: You have to get the water from the start, to the end parts (if you don't figure out which ones, I'll post it in the end of this...)

A bit longer: Have understood all the buttons? At least the arrows above/left to the puzzle. I first didn't understand anything about it, but then finally I understuud that the arrows move you around the puzzle area (I didn't know it was bigger than what was on the screen)

Anyways, the puzzle is just a basic version of the old "pipes", where you have to attach the pipe-parts you get to the endings, before the water cming from the start comes to the end. As you scroll around the screen, you'll notice a few endings. They are however smaller than the basic green parts. There's that one button that can switch the pipe size.

So. There's that one part that you must get the green pipe, so you can start getting the water to the red pipes. I'd suggest you first get the green pipes into that, before you start doing anything with the red. Remember, you don't have to use all of the parts on your system, just dump the useless ones somewhere out of the way. When you've connected the green pipes to the "divider" You move along to the red pipes. This is a bit harder, as you have to manage two pipes at the same time. When you get here, you should check quickly where the endings are. If you've got time, try to concentrate on getting one pipe first clear, so it'll be easier to manage just one. Also, if you have time, start from the other end too more or less...

And if you don't know where to end the pipelines, they are the stages, wich are..................... A1 and A2
[close]
Well, I hope I made some sense there and didn't leave any good strategies out.

You have made it to the final scene (where there are a lot of mutants in the seats of the TV set) ? If so you should find a way to turn the anti-fire system on. It reacts to fire... smoke... doesn't it? Don't you have anything that can produce some smoke? What kind of people would have something like that?

Dangit! Bloody copyright infringment!

Although, I doubt very much they would sue you if you uploaded it again.

But then again, why risk it?

This does, however, raise some interesting questions. Who told Paws about the game? I doubt Paws snoops around the AGS forums, and you probably couldn't find such precise details on, say, google or some other search engine (probably).

Is there a snitch among us? Did some n00b think he was doing the right thing and report you?

You can find the info about it - and download it - on Home of the Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?gameid=4868) (as mentioned in the post before yours), or there's another download available at the link a few posts up.
