Title: I Forgot...
Post by: LRH on Fri 25/03/2011 15:18:10
Yay. It's here!

I forgot is the story of Jeremy, who had once aspired to be a great artist. Several nights of hard work at his current office job have lead him to fall asleep during his work. When Jeremy dreams, he finds his old world waiting for him as it once was. Guide Jeremy through his dream and see if maybe you can help him to remember what he has forgotten.

This is a fairly short (takes me about 15 minutes to "speed run" it) game, fairly straightforward as well. You should note that I've made a 5th verb for this game. When Jeremy "thinks" about something, he can bring up memories about his past life or even come up with ideas on how to solve certain puzzles.

Nice one dude!! Well done on getting it finished. Possible bug, not sure:

Spoiler
Going to end of long hallway takes you to com centre level 2, not what happened in beta

Just checking :)

Not a bug, just something I changed. Thanks for your concern though. :P

Also, nice one yourself! The music brings it to life! :D

EDIT: Kind of irrelivant but I just noticed...my last game was #1313 in the database...this game is #1414. Weird.

Interesting concept and a good look you've got going on there.

Two things that I think are bugs

Spoiler
If you check the cupboard in the oven room (first floor of the community centre) twice you can end up with a second tray and set of crayons. This may only be possible after you've combined the first set.

I didn't get a hotspot for the darkness when I pointed the lighter at it (break room on second floor), though clicking in the middle of the screen lit the expected candles.

How do I get through THAT door (you know which one ;) )

stepurhan - Yes, those do seem to be little bugs :( I won't get a chance to fix them for a day or two. As for the door...
Spoiler
there isn't a secret to it...you just have to try really really hard!

Tabata- Thank you!

Tinytim- Yes there's only one ending.

Love it!

Powerful ambiance throughout, great art, and intriguing story, my favorite things in a game!

I don't understand the whole story (e.g. why does it start in an office to bring the main character back home, WHY does he meet his past self, etc... ), but I enjoyed it. The riddles were not too hard, and made sense, that's what I like in adventure games.

I voted on the db-page, but not enough votes yet.

Kelma- Thank you!

Selmiak- Sorry. Maybe the game synopsis isn't very clear. He's a man stuck in a rut at his office job. When he "goes home" he's dreaming. It starts in the office to give you an idea of who he is and what kind of situation he's in. He meets his past self in a dream because it's a dream about what really matters to him, his life as an artist rather than his life as a pencil-pusher.

Thank you for voting too, that's always very much appreciated!

I really liked the atmosphere in some of the game's backgrounds, I immediatly compared it to silent hill for some reason, hehe. I also liked the way you introduced the "think" verb, intresting way to immerse the player.

Maybe a bug:

Spoiler

When you look at the melted tin crayons in the inventory, it displays the Lighter's description, just thought I'd mention it.

Btw are you the one who composed the soundtrack?

Thanks! That is a bug...damn. I've got 3 little things to fix this weekend then. And I most certainly did not make the soundtracks. That was the word of our very own legend, Mods.

I would rather commit seppuku than criticize Mods  :-* but!

I just wanted to say the soundtrack in the second building has a real "Epic" potential, and I would love to see it developped a bit more! Just my two cents...

I didn't say it but thanks and Congratulations for your release!

Could you post on here when you have tweaked the bugs and uploaded the new file? I've got this on my potential list for the March Following Freeware article and knowing the bugs are fixed would be good for that.

That's awesome :D

I've just fixed the bugs this morning but I've got to run off to class. I'll be uploading the fixed version in a couple hours. :)

EDIT: I lied. First class was canceled, so it's up! I'll be giving it another good look over once I'm back as well.

Nice atmosphere! :)

I give this game a 6 out of 10!

What do you say, no?

Okay okay, a 7/10.

No?

Alright fine, 8.5 out of 10, you can't be unhappy with that! :P

(that said, you should do more of your Indie Games Night videos (http://www.youtube.com/user/D0mithan) :D)

I'm hoping the fact that I had to redo my links means that you've moved already. The March FF is in final edit and I Forgot made the cut. If not and you can provide some sort of guaranteed link in-between then let me know.

I am a weenie...I know there's a "hints and tips" section but...I am just stuck in general!!   :'(

I am basically stuck walking around having picked up everything that wasn't nailed down, and have found absolutely no way to use anything.  So--call me dumb, call me a cheater...but you say the game takes only about 15 minutes to complete (on a quick run, I know), and even though it's so short...it is absolutely bothering me to NO end that I cannot complete this game.  I do love it, by the way...might be nice to mention that small brown-nosing detail...

So this is my plead....since it's so "short", anyone want to take pity on a frazzled mom with 2 crazy toddlers-- that this game is my saving sanity right now-- to write me a quick walkie-thru??  Pretty please?  With strippers on top?  (Or whatever floats your boat...)

Ouch...just checked the votes page and I've been slammed without a comment. :'(

I'd just like to know, whoever it may have been, what made it outright "a bad game"?
It's perfectly fair to score it that way, but I don't like not knowing why...
Title: Re: I Forgot...
Post by: SarahLiz on Tue 19/04/2011 19:29:39
Well, I just submitted my votes, and all of them were positive.  I honestly loved the game--it was an interesting concept of events, & overall I can't complain (and I didn't).  I really enjoyed playing it.  I have no idea why it scored the way it did, and yet no one who submitted low ratings had the courtesy of explaining why they felt that way?  How is a person supposed to make changes or (potentially) improve his work for his his next game if he doesn't know what people want?

Anyhoo--I liked it.  Period.  No complaints here.   ;)

Yeah, you said it yourself that

"There's no trick to it...you just have to be very, VERY quick!"

I enjoyed all the other puzzles though and I enjoy your games in general. I'm curious what you'll cook up next.

you have to click quickly before the mouse flies away. But...you have all the time in the world to try to open it. :P

I have to give credit to ddq for coding that for me, it was a clever code.

I don't see any difference between the 2 descriptions. The game doesn't give you
Spoiler
all the time in the world to click the door, which means you don't have all the time in the world to open the door. The window of opportunity is timed.

I'm sorry if my dissatisfaction with that small fragment seems to have dominated my comment. It wasn't that terribly important for me. I just felt that was an unexpected small flaw in an otherwise very solid game.
Title: Re: I Forgot...
Post by: LRH on Wed 20/04/2011 02:14:30
Oh, I see what you're saying. In that sense, yeah I guess it is timed. I was thinking of something more along the lines of what you'd see in a game like Rein where you need to move before something slams into you with some heavy (no pun intended) consequences. Also, no your comment doesn't drive the feelings behind the comment. I'm sorry if I made it seem like I was too concerned with it, I was honestly just pretty confused.

I loved the atmosphere and story!

Some critiques;
*There were great potentials for a puzzle at some points. For example,
Spoiler
the instructions for the lasers could be 'hinted' and we would solve it as a player. And we could see the hi-score list and the extra-ordinary score
[close]
*The texts of the last room (where background is all white) were so hard to read. I would use an alternative font without outline (because it isn't needed when background is all white) at that scene.
*There could be a little delay before Display works.
*In that room where we encounter lasers, viewport could move to show us the lasers before our characters talk about them. Players would think "Lasers? What lasers?" there.

And I forgot to add,
Spoiler
when I saw the character which represents our past, I thought he was our past flat mate. He looked so different from us, I couldn't understand whom he was until I get the control and examined him.

This was a nicely atmospheric game with some good writing. The puzzles were okay and none of them got on my nerves. The music was lovely and the graphics were effective, if lacking in contrast.

It had a sort of nostalgic feel to it and reminded me of a lot of older AGS games which was really nice. :) Aside from some technical gameplay issues (some of which have already been mentioned) it's a decent game!
