"The game's laugh-out-loud dialogue and clever puzzles make Düsseldorf the best adventure game I've played this year." â€" Charles Herod, The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/13/sports/13game.html)

Overview

It's been a peculiar day for Jessica Plunkenstein.  By a freak twist of fate and/or airline security, our hero finds herself up against evil barons bent on world domination, evil headmistresses bent on pathological propriety, and evil yodelers bent on nothing in particular.  Full of llamas, ninjas, French people, pickled herring, dubious German accents, yetis in heat, and musical theatre up the wazoo, Jessica's adventures bring her from the Amazonian Rain Forests to the Norwegian Alps with layovers along the Eastern seaboard.  So tag along, and you, too, can unravel The Düsseldorf Conspiracy (http://www.gregames.net/).

Spoiler
to get further you need to paint an X on the box with the red paint.

But how do I make the llama's eyes red?
I have Red Dye, Cup filled with water, Llama fur, shaving foam, cutters.
All I need to do is make his eyes red. I've tried the dye and putting it in stuff but it just doesn't work! HELP!

I can't get through the introduction.   An error keeps popping up, and kicks me out.  I've tried it 3 times.  This is what it says:

An error has occured.  Please contact the game author for support, as this is likely to be a scripting error and not a bug in AGS.

Wonder what is going wrong for you, I didn't have any problems except that it took about 20 minutes to download. Have you tried deleting it and downloading it again. Its a great game so I hope you get it to work.

Sorry about the crashing, Potch.  (During my pre-release testing, I never experienced that behavior.)  I've added a call to StopMoving(), though, and updated the files on the server, so the script should behave better on your machine.  Let me know if it still proves problematic.  Thanks!

Greg, since your game is huge, kindly consider leaving the main files unaltered and using Clickteam's Patch Maker to make patches. I REALLY don't want to re-download it all if I get problems.

I was reluctant to download this one at first (with download limits and all thatÃ,  ::)). But I'm sure glad I did. Till now, it's been worth every MB.
The graphics didn't make much of an impression to me at first, but it took very little time for me to get used to them. (And BTW that scene with that waiter and his guest was great!Ã,  ;D)
Overall the humour is great, with all of those weird characters and Jessica's zany comments. Also, the voice-acting is very well done, IMO.

Congratulations from me, cool game!Ã,   :)
(Now, I've gotta mess up Norway some more!  ;)

Greg:

Thank you so much for such a great game.  We have been dying for something to play for soo long and you came up with a real good one. I'm sure like myself, we all have been checking the completed games over and over again looking for something worthwhile and you gave it to us.   I am in Act. 2 now. This game is so addicting and well done.  Wonderful how you have talk feature along with such good graphics and storyline with jokes.
You truly are amazing.   BRAVO

But one thing: If you write "Düsseldorf" without the "ü", then replace it with "ue", because "Dusseldorf" means "Village of the Fools"!Ã,  :D

OK, the last puzzle sucked, but you did this on purpose. So it was OK.  ;)
The Voice Acting was great! The graphics could be better, but I liked them.
Overall: one of the best amateuer adventures I ever played!

Yes! I had it! Twice! -->

Spoiler
Actually the first time I had the zeroth edition in my inventory before getting the Baron's book (first edition) and when I do pick it up, it doesn't show up in my inventory...like you.

The second time I tried it, I did NOT pick up the Zeroth Edition from the mantel (above fireplace) but proceeded to spick the baron's coffee with hot sauce and blow him out the window with the water fountain. This time, when I picked up the Baron's book, which I looked at twice to make sure it was the First Edition, I wound up with the Zeroth edition in the inventory.

Is this a bug? I can't go on unless it's fixed...

Really nice game.  I enjoyed the humor in it.  I was especially pleased to see the few Mikado references in it.  I was in that show once, and it's really rare to see references to it.

And I don't think Les Mis sucked!  I've seen it twice and it was incredible!

The only thing that I had an issue with playing wise was that it was often difficult to find just where to click to go through a door.  Other than that, great job!

I think this game is very enjoyable to play and has an amusing feel to it.

I too felt that using the walk icon when going through doors could be awkward at times.

Though it is clear a tremendous amount of time and effort have gone into the game.

Trish, regarding the book problem...

Spoiler
I tried this order:

1. Dont pick up the book on the mantlepiece.
2. Get Baron water blasted out of way with water.
3. Then pick up the book on the mantlepiece.
4. Then use this book on the book on the table.
5. The Baron still does dialogue with you like he's still there at the table, but it seems to work and you have the 1st Edition in your inventory.

Just started this game and I'm enjoying it so far.  A shame you had to go and pilfer the RON character archive, though. It sort of took away from the experience.  But, the humor more than made up for it.  the voice acting is also very good.

I'll comment more when I play more.

This game was great, very challenging at times but fair in the way puzzles were presented.  My only gripe (besides dipping into the RON graphic archive) is how hard it was to enter/exit doorways.  I'm the last person who should be talking about AGS technical stuff, but shouldn't it be possible to make the whole doorway zone active for the function that changes screens?
Title: Re: Jessica Plunkenstein and the Dusseldorf Conspiracy
Post by: MillsJROSS on Tue 09/08/2005 03:55:17
This is easily one of the most entertaining and well put together games I've played in a while. I'm glad this came out during the summer, otherwise I might not have had the time to play it.

The cons: As mentioned before some of the hotspots for entering doorways were a little ackward to manipulate. Sometimes the hand icon is better for entering/exiting buidlings. While I appreciated the extra effort to make it so the doors opened and shut, some of it was superfluous, and contributed to the ackwardness that was had when trying to enter/exit buildings. A small complaint was Jessica's speed, which was a little on the slow side. But that's really just a minor complaint. I think my biggest complaint would be the puzzles. While some were quite clever and fed the story well, some of them didn't engage me at all and left me stupified. Which wouldn't be so bad, adventure games are supposed to make you think. It's just that after I found the solution, I didn't feel the warm fuzzy feeling from a good puzzle. None of the puzzles were horrendous, I just didn't enjoy some of them. A good bit of aggresssion goes to the lights out puzzle, which just seemed thrown in there, mostly because how many people use a lights out for a lock? (I ask that with full realization of the silly world that your game takes place in).

The pros: When I downloaded the full thing I was almost horrified to find out it had voice acting, only because most of the time it get's annoying and I turn it off. However, I found most of the voice acting to be quite good. It added to the game, and the voice actor should all be commended for a job well done. While the the graphics weren't flashy, they were consistent. Consistency is more important to me then anything else in graphics. The well written and witty dialog is what really made this game for me. There some very funny moments, while playing and while watching cutscenes. The cutscenes were top notch, too. It seemed a good deal of effort was put into them, and it shows.

It really altogether was an enjoyable game. The only other complaint would be your website, which after having played your game, I know you could improve upon. Thanks for entertaining me.
