Title: LucasManiac !
Post by: Marion on Sun 23/04/2006 20:41:45
Hi everybody !
I have just finished a game. This is the longer and, I hope, the most technically well-done game I have made until now. And the first that I have translated into english, because I think it can interest many adventure games fans, as it is a tribute to many LucasArts games.
In this game, you play Bernard, the main character of Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle, in a new adventure. He will visit many places, meet a lot of people and fight many villains !
But I can't tell you more... just have a look ! ;)

This is the file, including English translation and the solution (in french and in english) : LUCASMANIAC ! - Zip file - 4 Mo (http://katurajdr.jexiste.fr/fichiers/jeux/lucasmaniac.zip)

[EDIT]
I have uploaded a new version with some fixed bugs and a corrected english translation.
[/EDIT]

Some screenshots (with french texts) :

I hope you will enjoy it.

How can I register for the AGS Awards ?..

I just played through it, and I must say what an interesting concept it is on what you've done! I shan't say to much to prevent spoilers.

However, I have found a bug.

Spoiler
After giving the blue crystal to Zak in IndyWorld, I am unable to go back to Indy World as I spawn onto Zak in the basement, preventing me from moving.

Thank you sklate !

sorry for this bug, I didn't experience this when I tested the game. I will try to fix it.

[edit]

Done ! I have fixed the bugs that have been reported to me.

If you find other ones, please keep me informed :)

I have noticed a couple of bugs and mistakes:

Spoiler
1: If you go back to the cantina after sending Indy back and then return to the room with the portal (moister-evaporator) Indy comes back.

2: I'm not sure how I triggered this but I think that after I sent Maggie with the module, I get to Indy universe and give Elaine the T-shirt, you somehow get to the start room of Zak McKraken and Maggie is back there.

3: For some reason after having sent everybody back to their universes, the game doesn't end. I'm not sure what I did but it wasn't in the order mentioned in the game guide.

4: When talking Zak for the first time you get the artifact BEFORE Bernard ask Zak to give it to him.

5: The Interface is in french in the english version and some of the interactions is in mix of english and french.

6: For some reason you can't go back inside the cave where Darth Vader was after you have got the droidpart. Of course there are no reason to go back there but still...

7: When giving/using the pearl on Indy or giving Maggie the ingraved stick, neither of them disappears in the inventory.

Otherwise, it's a interesting game. I once had the idea of making characters from different Lucas Arts games meet but not like this. If you're going to make an extended version, how about add Sam & Max and Full Throttle?
Title: Re: LucasManiac !
Post by: Marion on Mon 24/04/2006 12:19:12
Thank you Mats.
I don't think I will make an extended version with Sam & Max and Full Throttle, because I don't like thoses games as much as those I put in Lucasmaniac.

I will try to fix thoses bugs if I can.

C'est un jeu très intéressant!

I'm playing the French version and I'm enjoying it very much! The dialogues are excellent and funny, and the mélange of characters is really well done.
The only "complain" I have is that the font you used don't accept accents, so sometimes it's difficult (at least for me it is) to read some words - it took a time for me to realize that "ca" was "ça". :-[
This kind of game is nice also because every background I see reminds me the good time I had while playing those games, finding out characters and objects and solving puzzles.

Congratulations, Marion!

I'm in the midst of playing the english version, and it's been a great experience so far.

Marion, check your PM =)

*edit*
I've finished the game, and I must really say what a great job you've done! You've managed to keep the humour and light-heartedness of LucasArts games and manage to implement your ideas very very well! :)

bug report:
Spoiler
When you're in Zak World, you are able to use the lever to save Sophia even if you have not got rid of LeChuck yet.

is it just me or does the main character look surprisingly similar to the main character in no action jackson....

Heh, Bernard does look like the main character from No Action Jackson. But Bernard's character was created way before No Action Jackson was created.

Post by: Marion on Mon 24/04/2006 18:26:38
Thank you very much everybody :)

I know the font used in the game is not the best for french texts, because I can't use é, è, à  or ç, but every time I tried to change the font, the texts can't be readen. The default font is still the most useful.

I'm really sorry for all those remainings bugs, I wasn't able to see them every time I tested my game, even if I tried everything I could to be sure it's ok before to upload it.

And if you need it, there is an english walkthrough in the ZIP file of the game :)

My god, there are really STRANGE bugs !..
I don't understand why you can sometimes do a thing before doing another, as I programed the game in order to make it impossible...
I have to work a lot more on AGS...  :-\
Title: Re: LucasManiac !
Post by: Secret Fawful on Mon 24/04/2006 18:55:10
Personally, I don't think Sam and Max would work in this game, Mat..The games put in this awesome one are all on a completely different category from Sam and Max, anyway Marion, AWESOME GAME. You did a wonderful job! I'm impressed that you made a few original aniamtions too. :D My only problem with the game is that there were no room interactions. You couldn't look at items in a room or anything, leaving the rooms somewhat empty..in my opinion. Thats the games only flaw but the rest is brilliant!

Mayeb for the sequel you could find a way to merge Sierras worlds. ;)
Title: Re: LucasManiac !
Post by: Marion on Mon 24/04/2006 19:34:00
Thank you, Faw :)

You're right, I shoud probably add more room interactions, we can just look at objects useful for the game... I note it for my next game ;)

But I don't think I will make a game about Sierra... I don't like those games very much, I always prefered Lucasarts :)  (except from Goblins serie and Woodruff !)

Marion, I've sent the files to you already.

It's true that Full Throttle and Sam & Max are notably missing, but I guess we can't get everything we want, can we?  :P

And Marion, do not fret! I'm sure you'll only get better at AGS in due time!

INteresting game I enjoyed it alot it was very funny in regard to all the characters... hehe

Edit: One thing that really confused me was why dont the villians get sent back ?? with this module thingy ???
Title: Re: LucasManiac !
Post by: Marion on Tue 25/04/2006 07:21:33
As Bernard and Fred are good guys, they think it's better not to worry about villains....

Anyway, as you can you see, many of them woulndn't let them do :D
Title: Re: LucasManiac !
Post by: Sythe on Tue 25/04/2006 07:55:49
I didn't play it all the way through but I have some suggestions.

Take the effort to recreate the worlds a little more exactly and dont compress or scale the graphics (if you are forced to make sure you scale by an integer multiple and keep aspect ratio otherwise you get sort of half pixel (in terms of the other scaled pixels around it) type things and it looks quite inconsitent - anyone whos streched an image in mspaint would understand what I mean.)

Also with the backgrounds I noticed only monkey island had any animation. One of the best parts of The Dig was the quality of the graphics and animations. Nearly all the backgrounds are animating.

A third thing which annoyed me slightly was missing rooms. Its fair enough that you shouldn't have to include all the rooms from each world, but at least include the ones on the way to the rooms which contain parts of your story line.

And finally... Match the music, and make it the orginal music! It was almost disturbing to play in The Dig world without the right music.

All that said, the game is pretty good. The translations take a little out of the humour of the game but it seems as though you've managed to keep the characters as they were.

Anyway, well done.

I will try to remember your suggestions for my next game.

Anyway, I upload a new version with some fixed bugs (I hope !).

Post by: Marion on Tue 25/04/2006 18:52:44
Thanks, Dexter :)
I don't know when I do a new one, because it took me a long time to do this one and I want to rest a bit ;)
But I have done two others games before Lucasmaniac. I didn't upload them because I haven't translated them yet, and they take place in my own universes, with personal characters (including one I created for a comic book). I tried others GUI with them before to make a Lucasarts-style one. The first uses only Monkey Island graphics, and for the second I have drawn everything myself. So it's the shorter  ;D

[edit]
I have uploaded a new version of Lucasmaniac with corrected english lines. Thank you .Sklate. for your help ! :)

I have answered you by MP :)
How can I post a spoiler message ?  ???

For those who are not able to see the final cutscene, here is a savegame (just use the rock to leave Loom's universe) : http://katurajdr.jexiste.fr/fichiers/jeux/agssave.008
Title: Re: LucasManiac !

Spoiler message can be done by using

["hide"] put bunny rabbit into the coffee mixer and switch it to max. ["/hide"] without the " 's

Anyway, glad to see the new translation up! I think it'll be able to make the game more immersive, and allow for the jokes to be able to hit the funny bone easier.

Keep it up!

No, I don't think I will make a sequel to LucasManiac. I want to work on other kinds of games, more personal.
But hey, if you think you can do it yourself... why not ? ;)

You can download all the graphics I used on my AGS site : http://adventuregamestudio.fr-bb.com/viewtopic.forum

One thing about the game bothers me, how come you used the original backgrounds for the Zak McKraken rooms when you had the stuff from the hi-color for it? It would be more appropiate for the rest of the game, plus that you had the hi-color backgrounds of Loom.

I looked at the webpage and it said the Super Star Wars is for NES. It's actually SNES.
Title: Re: LucasManiac !
Post by: Marion on Sat 29/04/2006 15:03:53
Thank your for the correction.

I used the original Zak graphics because it's the original one, the one I played the first time. I played the 256 colours one many years later and I didn't enjoy it as much as before...

Just a personal choice :)

Hey Marion,

Nice game - very cute, lots of silly fun!

Just thought I'd add some other bugs I'd found:

Right at the end, the only people I had left to free were Elaine (from IndyWorld) and Bobbin and R2D2 (from Monkey Island) I freed Elaine, then went back to the warp screen ... and the game completed prematurely, with the cutscene and end credits and everything!Ã,  (I think someone else also encountered this bug.)

So, wanting to be a completist, I re-loaded, went back and freed Bobbin and R2D2 first, then Elaine ... and this time, the game didn't complete at all!

Also, something else:

Spoiler
I managed to free Sophia from the cage without defeating LeChuck first!Ã,  I simply pulled on the lever and she walked free.
[close]

I also encountered a couple of the other bugs mentioned above, so I won't repeat them here.Ã,  Anyway, good luck with future projects!

THank you, Sheepisher. The bug you encountered have been reported to me yet, and unfortunately I wasn't able to fix it for the moment. I am working on AGS and I hope to make a better game after LucasManiac.
But I'm happy you enjoyed it anyway :)

Bugs:

Spoiler
I could send Indy back to his world unlimited number of times. He dissapearred after doing so, but if I left the area and got back he reappeared.

I could finish game without sending people in the loom world or even getting loom module.

Except for that luke skywalkers place and lower passage at dig world were quite hard to see. It would be nice if you used original music from some locations.

On my PC star wars music wasn't working too well... After a while it was giving out loud beeeping sound...

Some of french text are still untranslated, one is said by Luke, and other - I don't remember by who...

Anyway, the game was quite fun :) But riddles were a bit too easy. There was too much of things like "go find one person who you can send, she/he gives you an item, then you go send someone else" ...

C'est vraiment un excellent jeu, plein d'humour, d'originalité, qui donne l'impression étrange de retourner dans tous ces vieux jeux sans y être vraiment. Très agréable.

I don't think I posted despite playing the game a while back..

I like it overall. The puzzles are simple fetch and carry, but it's cool when I see a familar character in another game! (And I laughed a few times although I've yet to complete the game)

My only real critiscm is of a personal one. I didn't like all the loud "ding!" noises the game kept making, which was far louder than the music, and when I was playing this game at late at night when people were sleeping I had to turn the volume down to compensate for the sounds and could barely hear the music then.

(Sorry I haven't read any previous posts in here and also I don't think I have been playing the most recent version.)

I love the premise of the game. I was really enjoying it until all the dialog text started zooming by so fast that I couldn't read any of it. I just downloaded the game so I assume it is the updated version. but good game none the less.
