The basics of the OSD mythos:
Oceanspirit Dennis is a girly-looking yet fearsome warrior who is the forbidden lovechild of Batman and Cloud Strife. He inherits his father's love of justice and wrath against the criminal underworld and his mother's feminine physique and impractical hairdo. OSD lived in "the city" for most of his life, protecting it. He eventually found his life partner, Ray, a 70's style pimp. After an epic battle with an evil blob, Dennis had a crisis of sexuality which split the universe into two divergent timelines, one in which he pursues heterosexual relations, the other in which he continues to be gay. In the former, he is a ninja, and in the latter, he is a pirate. In both, he is a hardboiled crimefighter, the main difference being whether he is a badass motherfucker or badass fatherfucker. After billions of years, he is put in stasis for another few billion years, after which he travels the post-apocalyptic wasteland leveling up.

Snake, it is your duty to either make an OSD game or help me with the one I am making. Or write hilarious fanfiction.

EDIT: Also, pretty much what Ben said. If you make a game, I'll find some strange way to fit it into the mythos.

ThreeOhFour

I've been operating with the mindset of: If it gets made, it's canon.

But then, I don't mind totally illogical storylines.

Ponch

Not being one of the three guys who made the character, I'm not sure if I get a vote in these matters. But as far as I'm concerned, the only canon in the OSD universe are the ones on his pirate ship -- it's a pun! :D

That said, I like ddq's summary. I had no idea of the significance of the blob battle (other than the obvious Joseph Cambell's "hero journey" subtext that was slathered all over the game, of course). Now I know how the universe was split in twain. It all makes sense now!

ddq

Should have probably mentioned this story, which basically explains the aftermath of the blob battle. That said, if anyone can do a hilariously bad German, hilariously bad Texan, or hilariously bad female voice, your vocal chords may be needed for Blades of Passion!

kaputtnik

I think it is very important to mention that 6000 years in the future, OSD through a terminal breakdown of wikipedia and the burning of Webster's dictionary of abbreviations by a horde of cyberpunk Alexandrians becomes the only legitimate form of on-screen-display in the whole of Eurasia and the Venus colonies.

Fit that into your storyline, please. And don't even try to attach ambiguous sexuality to it, because this is hardware talk.

P.S. If you are looking for a German who could deliver a hilariously manly Texan girly voice, you've got my number.
I, object.

Monsieur OUXX

I demand a high-quality Ocean Dennis character sprites pack to be made by a skilled artist (i.e. not by me). With walkcycles, and everything. Dennis has reached the point where there should be a template, just like RoN  :D :D :D

My impending contribution become less cannon by  the day. Must... make... faster...

Also on topic - this game is hilariously awesome :D

I'll do the Rogue-like, as it doesn't require much graphics, and I like ASCII art...
only problem being that I don't fully understand the OSD world, so I might need either teaching or a consultant.

Awesome, I will be your biggest fan.

Wait, how would you represent OSD in ascii? '@' just doesn't seem to cut it. What about a 'Y'? You know, like the hair?

Wonkyth

Yes, that's what the OSD will look like on the board, but I can have animated portraits of ASCII art, and OSDs one would be stuck next to the output box permanently.
"But with a ninja on your face, you live longer!"

There's no such thing as a non-canon OSD adventure! That's the beauty of OSD!

Also, I'm glad you liked the game.

Wow, I was kind of disappointed to find out that this was a real game! With gameplay and all...  ;)
It was fun to play, hope to see it developed further...

That is the damn stylingest pimp I've ever seen. Perfect! But Straight Universe Oceanspirit Dennis (SUOSD) is most definitely a ninja private eye.

I can't wait to read the wacky fan fiction.

You asked for it mate.

In the long tradition of crossover slash fiction depicting canonically straight characters in homosexual relationships, I give you...

Draco Malfoy and the Scourge of the Underworld!  (Rated M for explicit and erotic sensuality and graphic depictions of violence against the English language.  Read at your own risk.  Also drug use and some cusses.)

And here's the Source Code.

EDIT: My Immortal?  What's that?
EDIT 2:  Ah.  And no intent to hijack, but I wasn't sure where better to post it.  Game is brilliant.

Draco Malfoy and the Scourge of the Underworld!

Wow. Just wow. So I guess Straight OSD is a ninja, gay OSD is a pirate, and bisexual OSD is a vampire? The mind, it boggles.

Don't worry, Tzachs. I promise to put much less effort into it next time around. Why, I'm half-assing a sequel even as we speak!

Lyaer
Don't worry about the hijack. This is a pirate thread. Hijackings are to be expected. (And thanks for providing the source code. I don't think I've ever seen an open source short story before).

Mr Matti
Thanks. I'm working on the much larger sequel right now. Hope to have it done in a few weeks.

ddq
Celibate OSD should be a jedi. Or a mystery solving cowboy. :)

Something like that.  Bisexual might be a little too clean a term, though.  Clearly this is an iteration of an entirely straight character whose sexuality is being hijacked by the malevolent forces of fan fiction.  The implications are probably sinister.

EDIT:  I meant for the Draco Malfoy + FFSUOSD world domination plot thread to go nowhere, but if anyone wants to run with it, go right ahead.
Also I wholely realize and accept the implications of entering my Mary Sue into an opensource multiverse.  All fates are now open to him (including the horrendous and vaguely disturbing ones), and as long as it doesn't get too personal, I'm not gonna complain.
EDIT 2: Oughtn't someone start a wiki page with links to all the games/stories and also timelines and a character list?  Seems we're about there.
