Thanks for listening to my complaint about the mysterious object on the table...
It's much better now ;D

(to explain for outsiders: in the beta version I mentioned I couldn't click on it, play the game to find out what they changed about it)

Great game guys!

I'm playing it now. Great game! I love the graphics. And the objects to interact with.... amazing. Puzzles are a bit predictable but still great fun to play.

Update:

Crashed with -:-

Error: run_text_script1: error -6 running function 'room_RepExec':
Error: Array index out of bounds (index: 5, bounds: 0..4)
in "room9.asc", line 135

Keeps appearing in the shop from time to time, not really after an action. Happened even when I was just standing in the shop.

And after the credits, pressing esc brings you back to the start-screen. Choosing NEW there didn't reset the game very well. My piggybank is still on the floor, my 'sister' is still in the bathroom etc.

Seems to be a problem with the shop.

Thank you for the feedback  :D
I'll check what could be wrong with the shop,
and I'll properly reset the game!! (I didn't though about it haha)

Thank you  ;)

edit: silly me I know why it bugs! I call an array bigger than it should,
please my excuse it will be fixed as soon as I quit work  :=

And I was having fun with it, as well.
It's a cool game.
Title: Re: NES Quest - The 8Bit Journey
Post by: Mr.T on Wed 02/04/2008 09:17:32
I'm really really sorry  :-X
It will be fixed really soon, if you can save your progress in another
place than the tech store, it should normally work with the new version
since I won't change any global var.

Throw rocks at me... please.. I deserve that  :D
Title: Re: NES Quest - The 8Bit Journey
Post by: Ultra Magnus on Wed 02/04/2008 09:30:35
I'll do that. :)

Also, minor note...
Straight after I... opened the piggy bank (both times I played), the guy said his "I can't use that" message for no reason.
It's nothing major, but if you're going to be tooling around with the script anyway, you might want to do something about that while you're at it. 8)
Title: Re: NES Quest - The 8Bit Journey
Post by: Mr.T on Wed 02/04/2008 17:13:44
Thank you very much! I fixed the piggybank, the Warning in the tech store,
and did a proper reset when the game is finished.

If you want to use this new version save your progress in a neutral place
(like the park) and load it with the newer version, there shouldn't be any
problem. Modification were made only in the hero's room, credits and tech store.

;)

lol. I started downloading your game, when you uploaded the fixed version.. haha oh well.. time to download it again.. can't wait to play it.

edit: HA! this is wicked, so far. Im enjoying it greatly so far! keep up the good work! only issue i had. nothing major, well the save/load and quit gui's are just the standard ones, like i said thats my only beef with it and its only minor haha just abit odd thats all. :D

I'm having real trouble using items on the game world, or giving them... I click "USE" on an INV item, and when I move the cursor back to the game window it resets to WALK mode 9 times out of 10.*

*guesstimate. Didn't bother to check whether it really WAS 9 out of 10.

Had this problem in the original version, checked here, saw there was a new version, downloaded it - same problem. And I'm surprised no one's mentioned it...

Title: Re: NES Quest - The 8Bit Journey
Post by: Rui 'Trovatore' Pires on Thu 03/04/2008 00:44:18
Nads - Extremely helpful post. :P

Ok, I found out EXACTLY what is happening - if the mode is set to WALK TO, either by pressing 'W' or by clicking anywhere onscreen, and the player changes the mode via the keyboard shortcuts while the mouse is on the inventory GUI then *the mouse changed BACK to WALK mode when the cursor goes back to the main window*.

I know it sounds obscure, but it was frustrating me terribly before I found it was this arcane. And it happened quite constantly. Might be worth fixing, hmm?

Also, if you press ESC in the title screen, the mouse cursor turns to "LOOK" cursor. It resets properly when you play the game, but still...

Leon - again, I know it's obscure. But it was *severely* bugging me - I *always* pressed 'U' with the cursor over the relevant inventory item, and this pretty much negated it.

That explains... I hardly ever use the keyboard. That shows that a game can be interpreted in different ways by different users.  :)
Title: Re: NES Quest - The 8Bit Journey
Post by: Mr.T on Thu 03/04/2008 08:03:51
Rui 'Trovatore' Pires: Thanks for mentioning this problem, this one is really tricky
since there is an automatic LOOK AT inventory mode when the mouse cursor is
on top of the inventory and when it leaves this area it turns to WALK TO.

I missed this problem during the testing because I don't play with the keyboard
shortcut, I'll try to fix it but I'm afraid it would corrupt your actual savegame since
I'll mess with the globalscript.

Thank you for your help  ;)

Trovatore Pires: Ya man, the same was happening for me actually, but i wasnt using the kbrd shortcuts.
Tho it was mainly with the Use X Item on Y it would change.

I was having quite a bit of fun but suddenly when talking to Mario in the store this bug happened:

Error: run_text_script1: error -6 running function 'room_RepExec':
Error: Array index out of bounds (index:5, bounds: 0..4)

Please fix this quickly.

P.S. nice touch with the little Nintendo game thingie, ah the nostalgia!
Next time do Bouncing Babies  ;D

v1.1 with all the fixes including keyboard shortcuts working
when the mouse is over inventory, your actual savegame
should still work with this new version.

Thank you all for the bug report, I'm sorry I missed few bugs

Lol first of all thanks,
A sequel such as SNES Quest could be nice, it may sound stupid but to be honest i didn t even think about it ::).

Don't know if i'm authorised to say that (Mr.T is a real dictator believe me, things are not what they seem) but we're getting some very very very rough ideas together for our next game...

Thank you once again, C ya!

PS: To all those who played the game please rate it, to the others... DOWNLOAD IT!!! haha ;)

Yolt1, this is because you never brought me back my light saber..
Shame on you..  ;D

A sequel could be fun, but we already are on something (Yolt1 had
some nice ideas and you will all curse him if we'll make them..)

Thank you very much for your kind words about NES Quest, we really
appreciate, we promise to take account of the "default save/restore/quit"
gui look and "characters animation" remarks for the next game  ;)
Title: Re: NES Quest - The 8Bit Journey
Post by: Yolt1 on Sat 05/04/2008 10:25:38
As far as animation is concerned i'm the one to blame -_-. But as we already said we tried to keep it simple for our first game. Nes Quest enabled us to get more used to the ags engine and to all the things needed in animation for an adventure game. Next will be better... ;)

I've just finish it, great work guys
Title: Re: NES Quest - The 8Bit Journey
Post by: Nostradamus on Sat 05/04/2008 18:58:57
Well I finished it - the game was a very good effort. Simple story but interesting due to nostalgia, puzzles were mostly classic adventure game puzzles, but it was cool cos they weren't too hard and weren't too easy, great graphics, and that little handheld game was nostalgically (is this a word?  ;D) cool. Language & spelling could be better and there could be more witty remarks to interactions but those were good enough. It seems like you guys have great potential to make better and longer games so good luck.
If you were going with authenticity, did you actually hear anyone actually refer to the console as NES back in day?  sure, it was written NES as magazines and stuff but at least where I live nobody has ever called the console NES when speaking about, it was only referred to simply as Nintendo. So it didn't feel right to me having people say "NES" instead of "Nintendo" when speaking about it the game.
Also, one thing in the game was kinda lame -
Spoiler
when the mom says "I'll open the cupboard when I'm finished with my work" so you have to exit the house and return - that was really unnecessary!  It seems like a desparate attempt to make the game a few seconds longer but it doesn't really do anything, it's just unneccesary. Especially since you also included the feeding the fish thing. That was more logical and it's an acceptable action. No need for 2 stallers of this kind.

Title: Re: NES Quest - The 8Bit Journey
Post by: Mr.T on Sat 05/04/2008 21:17:43
Hey Nostradamus thank you very much for your constructive critics we really appreciate  ;)
To be honest I reckon back in the day I called my NES "nintendo", but then when the SNES
came out I had to differ both of them and called NES and SNES. (I still have my SNES too btw  ;D )

So today, after all those Nintendo products, calling it "Nintendo Quest" would have be too
blurry, we wanted to specify the 8bit console, and everyone would better understand what
the story is about without reading the plot yet (I presume  ;D )

Thank you all for your comments, it feels great  ;)  :=

Post by: Ryan Timothy B on Sat 05/04/2008 22:39:40
Excellent game.  I still think the fat boy playing the old hand held should have been a part of the quest.  Like you have to play the hand held game to obtain an object or something along those lines.

If you guys make a sequel you should definitely make more 'arcade-style in-life moments'.  Like when you were told to feed the fish.  The fish should have been in a large tank against the wall.  The camera should have been at a full view of the tank and then you had to press left or right to control where to drop food (just like the hand held).  The food drops slowly to the bottom of the tank, but you have to drop it close to where you think the fish is going to be swimming (as it swims back-and-forth randomly).  You only have so many pieces of food, then you have to 'restart' the challenge if you run out, until the fish catches a certain amount of food.

Also like I had mentioned before, a scene where he has to cross a busy street, have a top view of the street.  Let the ego move left, right, forward or backward.  Then the player has to control where the ego is going to safely cross the street.  Watch this:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyuY_ZwDbXE  I love that scene.  Of course only do this action once, otherwise it would be too much.

Normally in any other game, this of course wouldn't fit and would be very weird.  But in an NES game, it fits perfectly!

Ryan Timothy: Haha great suggestions! Believe us we had in mind a game with the Fish  ;D
but we wanted the game to stay "short and simple" and we started to think about so many new
mini-games ideas that the game could have been released on May or something  :D

The video you linked was funny haha, the idea would have indeed fit very well. A little series of
mini-game would gave a more arcade feel to NES Quest.

But Yolt and I before starting this game, told to each other let's make a short and simple game
to see how it goes. I mean, from experience I understood that if you go too big for the first one
it might get aborted in the end. (because of day job, life obligations and stuff..)

So to avoid this mistake we stayed with a basic concept, made the puzzles around it and in a month
NES Quest was done  ;) I assure you the next game we'll make with Yolt will be longer and the
puzzles more interesting. NES Quest was more for all of us who loved oldies, with many props to
games we loved since we are kids  :D

Nagania: Hahaha thank you very much!  ;)

Nice little game :).

I liked the inclusion of a minigame, good stuff, but yes I would have liked this to been a puzzle related thing (i.e that you had to complete both modes once each at least in order to get an item essential for the game).

My favourite part was the little ending sequence - very nice indeed.

Good work, especially for a first.

Just finished the game... great game, nice visuals.. I did have to use the hints for 3 items
Spoiler
chinese food, melon and extra coin
[close]
, all 3 more because they where too much hidden in the background (or next to another item)..
looking forward to seeing another new game... keep up the great work..

Awesome game, haven't finished it yet though. Still looking for the last coin :/

Just wondering, was the gui based on the scumm point 'n click gui I (Zor) developed a few years back?
If so, cool! Nice to see someone making use of it :)
If not, ignore this :P

Hello to everyone and happy new year!

Two weeks ago we had a nice surprise when we learnt that our game: Nes Quest made it into top 20 "Best Freeware Adventure Games 2008" of the site Indie Games. Acually, the game reached the 9th place, wich is something we wouldn't imagine possible.
I just wanted to share these great news with you and give you the possibility to go and check the top 20 by yourselves (there are a lot of great games)

Here is the link to the main article:
http://www.indiegames.com/features/index2.php?c=ad&y=2008&gid=0

Thank you all, and keep telling us your opinion about the game... :=
