Title: Other Worlds
Post by: alkis21 on Wed 01/12/2004 21:39:46
I'm happy and proud to give you:

I can't believe it's finally ready. The concept was born after reading a phrase in a Stephen King's Dark Tower novel in 1997: "Go on then, there are other worlds than this".  I thought that phrase was so powerful I could easily produce a whole story from it.

For those of you who don't know:

Other Worlds is a traditional game which took me 3.5 years to complete. It is a 3rd person, point & click adventure that looks and plays like the late 80s Sierra / LucasArts productions. My intention was to create the best amateur freeware game ever (in terms of gameplay; no way I can compete with Tierra's graphics, sound or animation).

Features:

-More than 150 locations to explore
-More than 40 characters to interact with
-Dozens of inventory items
-The infamous A.L.K.I.S. interface (A.L.K.I.S. stands for Advanced Language Kit and Interface System)
-An intriguing, humorous story full of surprises and plot twists
-A large number of challenging puzzles

It is a fantasy story of a young woman going on a quest to find her missing friend, and discovering a lot more.
You can read a Preview here:

Ok then, what are you waiting for? Go to http://www.alkis.org to download it. I hope you will find it was worth the wait.

It has a nice atmosphere so far. The graphic style looks a bit strange, but it fits well to the atmosphere. Reading about this project on your homepage I am really eager to find out what will happen next, but...
Spoiler
I really have no idea to crack the password of the computer

Hello, congratulations on your game..

So how can you add game into game section !?? ???

You click on "add your game" on the bottom of the game section.

I've only taken a look at the manual yet :)
So you put quite some effort in the manual instead of just dropping some lines into a readme textfile, but actually managed to provide it with your hp's ugly background pattern...
What about people who like to print out their manuals? Especially when considering the prices of printer cartridges...

Thanks guys. The graphics are probably the game's worst feature, as I'm a programmer, not an artist. However, I think the story & puzzles will compensate you as you go along (it starts slowly but it gets much more interesting).
Totoro, keep trying and you will find it. :) I can give you a subtle hint if you like but you will feel better if you solve it yourself.
Khrismuc, I'm sorry that you think the manual's background is ugly. The obvious answer to your question is, I never thought about it. I can e-mail you a background-free version if you want to print it.
Good news: The game has been online for just 30 hours and already 180 people have downloaded it!

Ok, I'll be very very honest - I love the effort put into this, especially the way the non-character graphics FIT - usually, people just throw them in and it makes them look out of place. I also love the little details, such as the cat going to sleep after she eats. That's the sort of little detail that makes the game come alive, up to a point, of course.

Spoiler
But I'm not really satisfied with the way things happen (don't shoot me!). I mean, the message Alkis leaves for Natalya (looks quite dramatic, but it means nothing to us this early in the game because we don't even KNOW Alkis)... the whole way you introduce Natalya (via a textbox)... the way the game starts (plunging you right into it)... The book in the mansion (it's a bit overdone. On the right track, but doesn't really sound natural. It sounded like the writer WANTED to be dramatic, and I mean film-dramatic, not real-life dramatic). Also, there's an issue with the inventory - when you open it up, it automatically goes to the pointer cursor, which does nothing, so we always have to switch to the HAND before doing anything else. It's bothersome.
[close]

But honestly, the game outlives all these things. Because of the story, yes, and the puzzles are quite, quite enjoyable, but mostly because it shows it was a true labour of love. Congratulations on pulling this off!

And know... I'm stuck! (he)
Spoiler
In the mansion, I've got to the basement and I found the plate. I'm pretty sure the prysm has to go in there and fixed with the bolt so "the beam can show me the way", but I don't know how. Also, how can I put 3 drops of glycerin in the bowl?

AND BY THE WAY, WHY didn't 123456 work on the keypad? Why did I have to solve the Buhdha puzzle?!!

Heh, just joking. But it IS a bit of a inconsistency.

I can't believe so many people tested the game for so much time and nobody ever tried that before. It's only been three days since I uploaded it and you're the second person who did that. I'm sorry, you are correct.  :-[ It is true then, you can't release a bug-free game no matter how hard you try. You don't need to use the oil can once you're inside the car anyway.
Rui, I'll reply in private to avoid spoilers.

I had the chance to play your game for a brief amount of time today, and so far I think it's really good! The graphics do their job, the music is really good and the story seems very interesting -can't wait to see how the plot unfolds! So all I can say is congratulations, panta tetoia! (that last part was in Greek, in case you non-Greek speaking people were wondering :P).

P.S.
Your name sounded kinda familiar but then I checked your homepage and saw the Kick Off 2 section and remembered you were the KO2 champion a few years ago! KO champion and a great adventure maker, that's quite impressive!

I always seem to be writing "thank you" posts these days. I was very anxious to hear what people who were complete strangers to me would think of my game. You see, all my beta testers were telling me it was great while I was making it, but they were all more or less my friends so I wasn't sure they weren't biased.
Now seems like as good a time as any for me to thank in public the man who made it all happen for us: Chris Jones.
Ευχαριστώ! :)

I sure will vote for this one. I just love it when we deal with many rooms and lots of puzzles.

One thing I don't like is that my screen goes 'black' almost everytime I make a move and then it seems to freeze, then I have to wait at least 1 minute and the screen comes back.  This is FRUSTRATING >:( >:( >:(.  Also if you open a door, then you have to use the 'walk' button.  And you have to 'look' all over before you can 'get something'.

I was wondering: almost in every room I went through I found something to take.

What is to get in the dining room ???

How do you open the trap in bathroom ???

If we miss something in a room.....can we go back to get it ???

BUT THIS IS A GREAT GAME.   LOVE IT .  :)

You screen goes black everytime?  ??? I can't say I've heard this one before. 1 minute? I can't believe you still haven't given up on it. There seems to be something wrong with the way the game cooperates with your PC.

QuoteAlso if you open a door, then you have to use the 'walk' button.

Yeah that's the idea, first you open a door, then you walk out of a room.

Great Game. At first, I was deterred by the graphics, but the puzzles and the story really work out well. Even for players, that like Myst ;-)

Well. But now, I'm not getting through the following thing:

Hi Alkis, I just finished your game! Overall, I really enjoyed the game a lot. The game has some qualities that are unrivaled yet and it is probably the longest AGS game so far, so much is sure (I also think it is longer than anything Sierra ever did and most other commercial games). Thank you for the unique gaming experience! ;)

Things that I think were really fantastic about your game:
Spoiler
- The spell system. It gives so much more depth to the puzzles. Adding some "parser" elements to a game makes the puzzles much more challenging and fun if it is done well. And you've done it exceptionally well.
- The code puzzle. It was fun to figure out which code was being used and it was a nice twist that the word "seven" didn't represent the numeric value but the characters.
- Characters you can relate to. Especially Natalia (except for some actions which seemed out of character) Dloulie.
- The demons: They were the two funniest adventure game characters I've seen in a long time.
- The four worlds: Each of the worlds had an interesting concept, also the mansion and the "meta world" where the demons lived.
- Most of the epilogue: I love this "what happened to them" style.
- The music: Most of the times it was just beautiful. Sometimes it was rather bizarre, but I guess that's what I liked about it. Did you compose it yourself or just choose it BTW?
[close]

However, there were some things that I absolutely didn't like. Most of them are minor issues that could easily be fixed on the one hand, but could spoil the enjoyment of the game for some people on the other hand, so I'd like to point them out to you as well. I hope you can take this as constructive criticism and don't feel offended.
Spoiler
- The orichalcum puzzle: There was no clue to any part of this puzzle. There wasn't a clue that an orichalcum bead could be used on the boat, not even that there was a mould or something similar. Also, you never needed the "summon inventory item from old adventure game" spell for and there wasn't a clue that the spell worked differently in different locations either. I honestly think that no one will figure this one out without trial and error. Add clues or remove the puzzle, it will improve your game.
- The screwdriver puzzle: Up to this point, all puzzles were very "down to earth". I just didn't expect this Monkey Island/DOTT kind of puzzle at this point of the game. And why was the vodka under the bed?
- Start of the game: I think I've read the words "Chapter I: Alkis Is Missing" more than 50 times and I will remember that Natalia is 27 years at the beginning of the story till the day that I die. You really should show a menu at the beginning that allows you to quickly restore a saved game, especially as your game is very long and people are likely start it many times before they finish it.
- The menu icons and some of the inventory items were too small for my taste. It's just uncomfortable. Also I think the title bar should disappear when the icon bar pops up so you can select an icon by quickly moving the cursor all the way to the top of the screen and clicking.
- The standard icon in the inventory should be the action cursor (except when you're in Gergem of course), just because the arrow cursor doesn't have any function at all and you can look at items by left-clicking on them. If I remember right, Puss in Boots already pointed this out.
- Natalia cutting the alien's arm off. Well, you portrayed the aliens as evil beings, but this was so cruel that it just seemed out of character. Call me a sissy, but I really didn't like it.
- The very last scene with Natalia back in Gergem (?). This ending gave me the feeling that all was for nothing. Or is it just that I didn't understand a thing? How can it be that Dloulie and Natalia still are close friends and she is still in Gergem? Or was it all a dream after all and all of this never happened?
[close]

Now there's one thing I'd just like to know (if it's not too personal):

Spoiler
Why did you choose yourself and your girlfriend as main characters in an adventure game and then kill yourself off and put your girlfriend in a coma? Or did you just use the names and the game characters don't have anything to do with you and the real Natalia?
[close]

I hope you'll make another game some time. Maybe with some help, so it won't take you that long.

Sorry, moderators, I don't know how this happened. :( I really didn't want to start a new thread. Could you move this message in the Other Worlds thread?

I thought the game was excellent, but as for the ending:

Spoiler
Actually, I'm curious whether Alkis had decided on the ending before he started coding. It seems to me that the ending would have been a lot stronger if everything if the fantasy world in retrospect could be seen as symbolic representations of the player character's emotional struggle. It could have been quite interesting if the locations and characters in the "Other Worlds" referred back to actual places and people in her old life as well as at the asylum (Cabinet of Dr. Caligari style). Imagine a Usual Suspects/Through the Looking Glass kind of twist where everything we've experienced in the game was actually derived from pictures, book spines and decorative objects on the shelves that the catatonic girl is looking at all day

Just wanted to let everyone know that Other Worlds was reviewed in a PC Master magazine (Greece) and got an 85%.
Since the mag is still out, I don't think I'm allowed to post the entire text. It was a two pages review, under "Positive" it listed:

-Classic old school adventure game
-Very good and in some cases exceptionally witty humor
-Use of spells
-Characters

and under "Negative":

-Graphics
-The ending
-Difficulty in finding the Exits

It's fine to post visible spoilers in the Hints and Tips forum but posting them here is totally ignorant and unfair towards people who haven't played that particular puzzle yet. the post I was replying to is from 8th jan 2006, so I guess I'm not that far behind the times(unless the rule you mentioned has been enforced on the 8th jan 2006 at 22:47  ::)).

You're totally right, my mistake. ;D

You could ask a moderator to spoiler it. Since the poster's a "guest" he/she won't be able to edit it him/herself.

You might be right, but still i dont find it such a serious mistake to make you so angry! Just for your info on Jan 8 i registered, so i think that i can excuse myself for making you angry, and thank you for your info about entering the spoilers bracket!
Spoiler
i suppose the xmas spirit must have left you untouched as to hate people so easily

woops, still need some practice there. and in my opinion saying "hey i'm a newbie!" is a pretty lame excuse for not reading the forum rules. also i didn't say I hate you. i was just reffering generally to other people who  m i g h t  react extremely hateful at someone else ruining a great game for them. i just said I was angry which is a difference - I'm sometimes angry at my sis which doesn't mean I hate her. about the thing being serious or not, that's totally subjective. if I don't get warned that I'm about to read a spoiler for a game I have yet to play, and actually read it, I find it quite upsetting, though you might not care at all and label it "eh, not serious". ignorance is bliss. as for the christmas spirit.... hey i didn't throw things at you and I gave you some useful advice for the future. that's something I do exclusively for christmas. but if that wasn't christmasy enough I'll be happy to add a hearty HO HO HO!!!  ;D

Anyway! Back to the topic, I'm stuck!

Spoiler
I've gotten the password, and I've noticed that the first letters of each new sentence spell out the hidden message " get the rope ". Now, how do I make Natalia realise that? Or am I suppose to just get the rope? If so, what rope? Is it referring to the nylon cord at the curtain?

that should be in "hints and tips" but ...
yes (to your last question) ... do you already have the knife?

Edit: (ontopic) Besides AGDIs KQ remakes, which introduced me to AGS, Other Worlds was the first AGS game I played and completely convinced me, that this is a community I have to stay in touch with, so as not to miss such good freeware games  :)
