As are screenshots. :)
Screenshots aren't required in the Completed Games Forum, right?
I played it, and I found it hard. I was wishing for some sound effects and music, and I found the interface a little clunky. I was a little confused about the difference between Use and the Hand in the inventory, though I think I figured it out eventually.
I died.
I don't want to make it sound like it's all bad. It does seem like something I might like to try to complete. I only gave it one quick play before commenting, so I might just go ahead and play it a few more times to see if I can't do a little better.
You know, I think a readme would be helpful.
Is it just me... or are the destinations we arrive in totally, totally random? I started the game four times and never even started in the same room.
My thoughts - it seems like a dungeon crawl wannabe. Now this is not bad, but in my opinion, it doesn't quite cut it. It's another, interesting direction for an AGS game, but it's flawed in these manners:
Spoiler
The paths seem to lead to random rooms.
My first time through, I met a monster on the second room. I didn't have any weapons, I couldn't go on, I couldn't backtrack, and the monster didn't attack me. And there was no restart button, so I had to quit. This is poor design.
It's very hard to stay alive, considering how random it all seems. It's not a game of wisdom, but of sheer luck.
The stats and food and stuff are interesting and well implemented. However, their randomness is disheartening. ASCII RPGs are quite random, but it gives you a fighting chance. I didn't feel that chance in your game. Granted, that does make it more like you're thrown in a dungeon to fend for your life, but it kills the game, IMO.
All in all, it's a good concept, a good idea, and it could be carried further. In fact, I think it should. I think you should look at this not as a finished game, but as an experiment of what you can do with AGS. ANd I think you should now take what you've learned to make it better, beacuse I really think you can.
Played it a few times, but game up 'cos it just leads to random rooms - couldn;t followthis one at all. Agree with Erenan, it really needs a readme - as not sure if I was playing it right.
Hrm....Good good, I see. I was thinking about a README already, but considering that your simply THROWN in, I figured that the player would have to expirement a lot to find out the exact mechanisms of the game. However, at reading these comments, I can understand how the design itself is disheartening enough to stop play before understanding.
Erenan- I was thinking about music and sound effects, but I wasn't sure they'd fit the whole "Trapped in a silent dungeon losing your sanity" setting. I'll probably add sound effects later, but no music. (Unless maybe there is a JukeBox hiding in the Labyrinth eh?)
Rui "Brisby" Pires- Yes, the game is, totally, completely, random. I'm thinking I should add a message claiming that the wall drops behind you when you move to a new room, that would explain why you cannot go backwards no? True, some is quite random, and about 50% of the time the game becomes impossible, but for the other 50%, you do have a chance if you make all the right decisions (like waiting for your strength to return by doing absolutely nothing (another thing that should be in the README)) I'm thinking about your last comment mostly, perhaps some easier monsters and different weapons could be implemented later on, but for now I'm just testing the system for major bugs.
I'll be gone for about 2 weeks, so don't expect a reply for a while. I'll begin work on your suggestions as soon as I'm back!
(Thaks again)
Brisbi, you can also fight the monster with your bare hand. But it costs nearly all of your strength.
I had a lot of raw meat I couldn't eat. Is there a fireplace somewhere? Didn't find one. It isn't a bad game after all, but after I few times, I played it, I didn't really know how to accomplish this. And I don't think it should be that way, because the labyrinth is a death trap and you simply can't escape.
cheers

Spoiler
Brisbi, you can also fight the monster with your bare hand. But it costs nearly all of your strength.
Ayuh, that was another thing. I looked at the hand in the inventory and it said "It's my hand... I can use my other items with it." And naturally, it didn't occur to use it as a weapon.
And aye, there seem to be some sort of braziers around to cook your meat in. And Akumayo, this is quite the sort of detail that makes it a pity that... well, all the things I said. This sort of thing is the reason why I think you could do better, and actively encourage you to.
Time for one last post,
Forgot to mention the monsters. You can fight them with your bare hand (cost 2 strength, deal 1 damage (another README useful)) It costs strength to dodge the monster's attacks too, which you can't really tell unless your paying the utmost of attention. Also, over 10 strength, you dodge easily. 5-10, you might get hit (depending on the monster). 4 and below, you always get hit.
Some weapons have counter-attack values (another README useful...) Like the brick sometimes stuns monsters or confuses them into hurting themselves. And the rib can be used to counter the monster....
About monster attacks...
They are unagressive, so they only attack if you hit them first, (except the bug, it sprays you sometimes). That should be of some use....
I'm thinking about adding a "Torch handle" that you can find on dead bodies. You could fight with it, or use it on a furnace thingy to light the torch and recieve a "Lit Torch" item. You could cook your meat on the the torch, or fight with the torch (which gives it the chance to go out).
Like I said before, this is just a raw, completed version. New monsters, items, and events can be added pretty easily now that be bulk of scripting is done.
Thanks for the comments so far.
(okay, leaving for real this time... be back in two weeks.)
I feel terrible for double posting, but since the update, I feel it is neccessary to bump...
Can you save the game?
No, no, no, no, no, no- You see, if you could save the game, then you could:
Save Game
Enter new room.
Oh no! This room doesn't have what you want in it!
Load Game
Enter new room again.
There you go! Now what you want is in the room.
Therefore, I had to kill the SaveGame feature, sorry. Besides, you really don't need to save i the long run, my longest running game was 32 minutes, and if you're getting along really well and absolutely HAVE to quit playing, you can minimize. (I know that's not perfect)
More questions/comments/suggestions anyone?
Understanding your reasoning but just that I find it frustrating that I just spent the last 30 minutes playing it and the game crashed and now have to start all over >:(
Crashed!?!? Where did it crash?! Why?! Details please! I must fix it!
And um...Sorry about the crash...
I haven't played it since the crash - so maybe t may be a fault my end.........will let you know if it happens again.
Still troubling me though, please let me know as soon as it happens, I haven't found any crashes in my beta-testing, so this is new ground for me.
SaveGame feature, please. Even if it's just, like, "save the game when we quit and restore when we go back". Please.
Hrm...will add...
OKAY! Finished.
Save/Load now available!!!!
Using it is a bit tricky, the README gives an overview.
It crashed again.............. I was using dagger to kill dragon in room with a chest, played again and crashed yet again this time was using dagger to kill another monster.
Ignore this thread................I finally fathomed out what was happening. Managed to complete it Yayyyyyyyyy! Talk about a frustrating game. ;D
I can't edit my original comments on view of game, so will put the comments I was going to make here............
Game has been updated since last playing, have now found game much better to play. A very frustrating game that you will be determined to beat!
Thanks Jane, and glad you could work out the "crash".Ã, I will be adding a "You Lose" screen in the final version.Ã, Aside from that, does anyone have any more suggestions?
