Title: Principles of Evil II - now with music (AWSOME!!!)
Post by: ola_66 on Sun 18/11/2007 19:32:31
Newer Update
MY COMPUTER EXPLODED!!!
I'm in the process of getting a new one, so it'll be a while before I get regular internet access :(
..luckily my harddrive was spared... :)

Update
Linus and my sister have done an AMAZING job writing music for me, and I've finally incorporated it into the game
--- you MUST play the musical version.. it's a whole new experience!!! ---
www.divotdesign.com/PoEII.rar

Special Note
Quest for Glory did NOT invent Babayaga (and neither did I..).  She's a well-known character from Slavic folklore.

New Features
- You didn't have to pester me for months to add animations (they're already there!)
- Cartoon sequences to enhance story-telling!
- An entry screen and end sequence
- A cuter, "Walk" symbol, cuz the old one was weird

Story: Now that Rogi has fallen through the hole in the earth, (check out part I at divotdesign.com) she is one step closer to the home of Babayaga.  She can almost smell her idol cackling in the distance.  But alas, it is night in this creepy land, and (of course) wacky adventures ensue!

I've played a  little bit and so far this game is awesome, it has a deliciously evil atmosphere(I can see you've put a lot of application and time in your backgrounds and character animations) plus I love the cartoon sequences and that hot/rude blacksmith, haha! Well done!!!  :)

I seem to have found a bug.

Spoiler
After you fill the old lady's prescription and she shoves you out the door, if you go back in and try to talk to her, she responds with the customary "What do you want?" The only response option you have is "Nothing.". However, when you hit the response, Rogi says it and then it goes right back to the response prompt, which still only has the "Nothing." You get caught in that loop.

Someone else also told me about this one.
I believe I've fixed it, but if anyone has it happen again starting now, lemmie know...
By the end I was really getting lost in a web of variables haha

First off love the game.  Art work is amazing and I've been drawn in so far.

Not sure if this is a bug or not but seemed odd

Spoiler
I'm in the bear's house and just gave them the honey.  When I look at the upper area the game says there's something blue in the garbage pile.  I click on the garbage pile w/ the hand icon and Rogi does an animation but nothing is put into inventory nor mentioned on the screen....  Is this a bug or am I just missing something?

Also one other suggestion (and it's just that) would be to add a "Nothing Happens"/etc blurb to the button you push to see if you're right in the phylum puzzle.  I guess it should be obvious you have to push something but honestly at first I thought the game was going to tell me I was right once the proper alignment was set.  Only after using the eye command on the lower button did I realize that I needed to push it.  I had previously pushed it w/ the hand but no text or info came of that....again just a suggestion.
[close]

Thanks again for all of your hard work.  Looking forward to finishing and maybe eventually replaying it w/ music.

-Jay

Yes, this is definitely a huge mistake on my part.  It's because there are two ways to do this, and I forgot and only tested one out each run through.  Uploading new file now.

If anyone had Jay's problem, you can still pass the game without re-downloading, but you do have to re-start that part and:
Spoiler
Click on the actual blue item in the garbage pile, not the pile or nook itself.  It's hard to see, but you should be able to make out a bluish fish.

Thanks!

Weird.. it doesn't happen for me anymore.  Does it happen no matter what you try?  What other actions have you completed at that point?

Is there some way to look for every place in the program that a variable is called up?  Rather than searching room by room, hotspot by hotspot?

Re: music,
it's pretty much all done, I'm just matching up rooms to songs.. :)

Oh ok, I figured it out!!
If you use the hand tool to "open" the door, she can still come in right?

I was tired of switching tools in the last game, so I made almost all rooms (with maybe 1 exception) accessible simply by walking in that direction.. so I've stopped using the hand tool myself, and didn't find the bug.

Hopefully this fixes it, thanks!

I've played through both games and I must say I very much enjoyed them. Nice to see some Slavic mythology in action. Great graphics. The game could use some sound though (if not music then maybe some ambient sounds, for example when I saw the bison I subconsciously expected them to go moo... or whatever noise bison produce).

I'm so glad that Part II of Principles of Evil finally got made!  I enjoyed playing Part I when it came out, particularly the gorgeous graphics and Rogi's laconic attitude.

I'm enjoying Part II so far - however, I seem to have encountered a bug ...

Spoiler
After discovering the secret mushroom cave beneath the greenhouse, and talking with the elderly bison guarding the grass, I went back up through the greenhouse and into the main hall of the mansion (with the seashsell over the fireplace).  However, for some reason Rogi got stuck by the door to the greenhouse - I couldn't get her to walk anywhere!  Now I can't play any further! :(

Is it just me?  Did I do something silly?  I hope it's fixable as I'd love to keep playing.

Yes, I believe we put a little of ourselves in everything we do. Supposedly Michelangelo, Leonardo and others have unintentional self portraits in some of their works.  Just don't go casting spells on us. :)

Okay. This game is awesome.. The backgrounds are CMI quality, the music is perfect(you hear yourself talking actually)
Two things
Animation looks a little weird...
And if I rated this game it would easily take a 8/10...
also get that music...

Hi ola!

I've just completed PoEII and I enjoyed it very much!
I love your style in graphics. I think you are really good at creating mood.
- And I love the cut scenes throughout the game. They are really funny ;D
The end cut scene was hilarious :D

And you say your sister did the music? That must be very cool to develop a game in teamwork with your sister :)

This is great.  The graphics are cute and atmospheric and it is immediately apparent you put a lot of work into them.  The music does a lot for the atmosphere as well.  The animations really brought it to life.

Puzzles are pretty easy, but logical.  I never had to look at a hint thread, which is a plus in that too much back-and-forth between game and Internet can be a bit jarring.  A little heavy on the fetch quests.

Overall a very nice little game.

Finished the game.  Really enjoyed it!  Graphics are just super moody...very professional I must say.  For some strange reason the version I downloaded did not have any music.  I re-downloaded the updated link you provide in your original post, yet the game is still silent.  Am I the only one with this issue?  Would have loved to hear the music, but the game is certainly playable and enjoyable without any too.

Well I played through the whole game thinking "Where is the music?". Turns out I had the midi volume turned right down on my soundcard :-\

Thanks for the great game Ola, the artwork is nicely done and the cutscenes really looked professional. I'm sure the music was great too.

Brilliant game Ola.   :)
The backgrounds are really gorgeous - very atmospheric.  And I love the cutscenes.

The mollusc puzzle threw me a bit.  I thought the game would automatically tell me when I had things aligned correctly - didn't realise you had to press the lower right button at first.   ???

An excellent game though.   ;D

Yeah, that puzzle was really tough! I must admit after trying very hard to guess the combination I ended up spinning the wheels randomly until the right combination was found.

I hate it myself when I create a puzzle, and people don't bother to solve it but rather guess their way through, but in this case I was not able to recognise the names of the different species simply because English is not my native language ;-) (Probably just a bad excuse heh).

Here's how I solved it.

Spoiler

Click on the question mark next to the dials. You'll get taken to a "cheat sheet" showing the names of all the creatures.

Go to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) and, for each creature, type the name of the creature into the search box (on the lefthand side of the page) and press "Go". On the right of the page, when you get there, you'll see a table that gives you the scientific classification of the creature, including the phylum. Make a note of it.

When you've done this for all the creatures (or enough of them) you'll see that there are several that fall into the same phylum, and that this is true for several phyla. Now go back to the puzzle, and for each creature in each phylum that has several creatures in it, write down which ring that creature is in (outer, middle, inner).

Note that there are only six creatures in the middle ring. Look through the list you've made. You'll see that for at least three of these six creatures, there is a creature in the same phylum in the inner ring, and a creature in the same phylum in the outer ring.

Now it's just a question of lining these creatures up so that they fall between the black needles in the puzzle, using the three knobs at the top right. When you've done this, use the knob at the bottom right to complete the puzzle.

As far as I am aware, there is only one solution, but there may be more than three phyla having a set of creatures in all three rings, so you might have to experiment a bit until you get there.

Hopefully this makes sense and is helpful.
[close]

I liked this game very much - it was better than the first part, in my opinion. Some of the detail was a little hard to see because the rooms were so dark, but I got there in the end.

A few bugs I spotted (sorry if these have already been mentioned or fixed):

Spoiler

* Once you've put one or more ingredients into the cauldron, looking at it again says "An empty cauldron hangs suspended".
* If you speak to the pharmacist after using the pills, the dialog option "What can you tell me about these pills?" still appears.
* When you look in the coop, the message "A box without treasures..." flashes up on the screen for a fraction of a second - far too fast to read. Is this meant to be there, as it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the game?
* Using the ember on the hay in the inventory gives a different response from using the hay on the ember, and one or both of the responses suggest this is not the right thing to do, even though it is. Perhaps these should say "Not yet" or something like that, as you need to put the hay down before you use the ember on it.
[close]

Apart from that, a big thumbs up from me for the outstanding and beautiful graphics and a great game.

The screen was too dark in some places, but having said that, both of your POE games are graphically the best I've seen. I think II is even better than I. Brilliant stuff.

The music was also very good in both games and very funny in spots. My favorite music was from the first game when the character was walking outside the stores.

If you had a compelling story and more character development and interaction you could create something really special.

Well done!!

What a wonderful game. In my opinion it had it all, graphics were amazing (particularly liked the sweet shop - that river! and the mushroom caves) story was interesting and funky, tons of LOL humor, great soundtrack and my absolute ideal level of difficulty puzzle wise (I think I consulted the walkthrough once in each game just for the next step). Both parts were amazing and my heartiest congratulations to you, I would be very proud indeed if I had made it!

That said (enough gushing already) the only part that I found a little bit annoying (just a wee bit) was the botanical names puzzle. For me to log onto the internet to find those all out was not what I wanted to do in a game. That said, again, yay you, fabulous game!

You don't have to log in to the internet to find them out - I am honestly puzzled that people have done this. All the information is in-game, one single click away.

ABOUT THE PUZZLE:

I knew it would be torture... but I wanted to force my love of invertebrates on everyone!!!

There were three versions:
1. no cheat sheet
2. cheat sheet with only names
3. cheat sheet with names and Phylums

So that's why some found it easier than others.

Thanks for all the feedback and compliments guys!!! :D

What a great game!!! One bug I found though was when I clicked on the small twinkly house in the distance near the old couple's cottage after picking up their prescription from them, I clicked hand on the twinkly house further down and an error message came up and closed the game down. What happened?
