Title: Shades of Greye
Post by: discordance on Tue 26/01/2010 22:04:07
You are Montmorency Greye, a private investigator, gun-toter and name-taker. One fateful night you are sent to investigate a series of mysterious disappearances in an isolated whaling town. Before long you're fighting for your life. That's right, YOUR LIFE!

This is a shooting game featuring a variety of exciting and challenging puzzles, such as "How much lead must I pump into this shambling monstrosity before it dies," and "Oh crap what is that in the dark behind me?!" If you like shooting at things until they fall over, this is the game for you!

MAGS entry for January, and so far it seems the only entry :'(

Here is the game itself! (http://adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1274)

Well, as I said in MAGS thread, it's nice, but graphics could be larger in size. Also controls feel a bit stiff.
I'll tell more when I finish it.

I think this leads into the wrong direction.
Mankind should seek for dialog with monstrosities instead of fighting them.

Actually that is a possible strategy for completing the game. Just start it up and walk up to the monsters and ask them how they feel about your relationship. And continue to do that until they finish eating your lungs and spreading the rest of your internal organs across the city block.

And Crimson Wizard, may I recommend... (http://magnifier.sourceforge.net/) ;)

Are you sure you pick it up? This game requires pressing "Up" arrow to pick items up. By the way, discordance, I think this is not really good.

congratulations really great game, i love it.
outstanding atmosphere, very good graphics and music.  :)

2 little problems:
game crashed as i try to load a saved game in the cemetry.
now im stuck on the sea, cause im very low on health and after going to death (3rd tentacle)
i start again with the low health.
maybe theres a way to get over the tentacles without being harmed, but i didnt manage this.
The 1st and 3rd always hitting the boat from below, without a chance to avoid it.

I'll probably try to upload an improved version soon where easy mode is a bit easier. In the meantime your best bet with the tentacles is probly to run like hell from the ones behind you and shoot down the ones in front of you from a distance.

I really like the atmosphere in this game.  I have yet to complete it though mainly because I for some reason always choose to do the hardest difficulty in any game that I play and I'm stuck.....

Whoa, so you started on "Death becomes me" mode? Even I haven't yet been able to beat it that high. It may actually be impossible. I recommend going down one level at least :)

How many times exactly do you have to kill the giant grasshopper thing at the end?

About a jillion or so.

Or five.

Let me say I really enjoyed it! There's not much space for story in these kind of games, just shoot, shoot and shoot again: Shades of Greye does it really good!
The stages I enjoyed the most where the one requiring the lamp! I wanted to write a small comment on the game page, but I usually vote only after finishing and I am currently stuck

Spoiler
I'm on the wrecked ship, and there's this giant thing wanting me dead (how original of it :P). I killed it 5 times (1 front of ship, one left, one right, 1 front again, 1 left again) and I've got like 3 healt and 1 bullet. I thought after 5 times it was over! Am I wrong?

edit: ok, found a spare bullet box and the bitch went down with just two more. This one made remember what a Doom syndrome actually is. Nice ending.

edit II: skippable dialogue & key remapping <-> two simple things that could improve the game.

You can skip dialogue by clicking the mouse. Kind of a deep dark secret there.

pffft mouse is for losers! Keyboard skippable text ftw!

edit: </joke> seriously, it could be better to handle it via keyboard, being a keyboard driven game, imho.

edit II: ok, I've beaten it at "Bring it on, I'm a real man", but am not able to complete the "death becomes me" course (getting killed in the shooting before the cemetery). What's your strategy there?

edit III: will there be sequel?

Well I didn't want to make it skippable by any key, cause then if you happen to be holding down an arrow key and a cutscene suddenly starts you might see a few lines of dialogue zing by before you know what's going on.

As for the Last Stand at the Outhouse you might want to ask Ethan what his strategy is there :) But here are a few hints:

Spoiler
I usually cover the left and let Billy take the right. I use up less ammo and he has enough space to take down the one extra hound before it catches up.
Don't wait to empty your clip before reloading if possible, especially when the creepers appear.
Don't kill the two hounds one after the other. Leave a stretch of time between. That means they'll respawn further apart and you'll have a better chance of taking down the creeper before they get in your way.
When the creepers do appear and you have to reload, think about which side you're most likely to get swarmed on and face away from it, so Billy will cover it.
Good luck.

Finaaaally made a new version! Easy mode is easier and there is more ammo for the final battle (on easier difficulties) so hopefully everyone can stop being mad about that now :)

Cool game, discordance!
I gave up when I got to the giant grasshopper near the shipwreck though, I shot him about 30 times and he still didn't die, that bastard (and that was on the second easiest mode)!
Is it possible that every time I go inside the hole and come back his health goes up to 100% (that was my strategy)?

I took me exactly 33 hits ;)

Basically he runs away after 6 hits in every room, and when you hit him a certain number of times he dies. Leaving the room doesn't reset his overall health (though it may reset the number of hits it takes to make him run. Not sure about that.)

Here's how I managed to beat the game:

Spoiler

I think the best trick for this game is to shoot and reload at about the same time.  Since you don't have to wait until the gun is down after firing you can shoot and reload and then shoot again at about the same time that you would be able to shoot again if you hadn't reloaded.

Also, for the final boss the easiest way to beat him without ever getting hit is to shoot and then immediately afterward start moving and then turn back and shoot again it's almost the same trick as last time but with movement instead of reloading.  It lets you constantly move away from it while still shooting.

I feel a bit like a loser for knowing the secrets to this game.  :-[
Oh well, that's what I get for playing it on "Death becomes me" mode.  ;D

Nice name for the difficulties by the way.
