Post by: Matt Frith on Sat 31/10/2009 17:19:36
Star Trek Newton: Part One - Anomaly

I am pleased to announce the release of the first part of the Star Trek Newton series.  It has been an interesting few months of learning AGS but i'm pretty happy with the result.  I hope you all enjoy it too.  I look forward to beginning Part 2 and learning some more about AGS also!

Yay!  I was looking out for this one... hundreds of Star Wars games around, Star Trek hasn't had too many (so far...)

I just finished the game. Its pretty good. I like the coding and animation work that went into this. Although I hope Episode 2 is a bit longer than this and has much more of the ship to explore.

But keep it up! I enjoyed playing it.

Nice... hope to see more... although the font is on the small side.

Little finds in this one:

- Hotspot name of the first door is quaters instead of quarters.

Haha good spot Leon, I will make sure I correct that one for the 'Deluxe Version'

There are some more little typo's in the conversation with D'Brell.. (apostrophes, comma's etc)
Text goes quite fast for the tiny letters. Maybe a slider in a control panel that controls the speed in the 'deluxe' or the next episode?

- Opening the cabinet: these books look too complex for me to udnerstand --> understand.
By the way, using the life sign monitors on the right, make you walk to the cabinet?
- Looking at the panel above the monitor: looks like this planel is .. --> panel
- Talking to the captain: aqauint --> acquaint
- Talking more: automtically --> automatically
during the conversation it's mentioned that the recreation room is on deck 11. I'd swear it had to be deck 5...

- Captain in recroom: work on commnication --> communication
- Personnal communicator should be personal communicator (hotspot and dialog).

- Talking to Alice:  I hope you have more luck that I did --> than I had.

- Looking at the blue conduit: I don''t --> I don't
There's a blue conduit which is clearly blue... but the yellow looks very red to me ...?

- Next to the unknown room is a label with 5 epsilon... shouldn't that be 4 epsilon?

Seconded Leon, the font is too small

and one Anomaly :)

after going back to your room, the hero is in it, but the screen is not changed...still the view from the hall
only after another click on the door the screen move to your room  :o

EDIT: Sometimes it does

Cute game, and the puzzles didn't make me groan for a change so well done!  I'm looking forward to part 2 (and hopefully more music than one droning loop over and over)! :D  I have a bunch of music from the Star Trek series (from when I was working on an ST game), so if you decide you want to add some in just let me know.

Thanks ProgZ :D your support means a lot to us.

What I would like to incorporate in the next game are more "motif" type sounds like the Original series had and an Animated series-ish "fanfare" type sound that is unique to Newton. The next one is looking a bit longer so more music would be essential. Neither Tier nor I are great composers so just looked up a few loops to fill in :P.

Thanks as well to Leon for spotting all that stuff we missed, and to everyone else who has played so far. I hope you all enjoy it.

I'm really excited to get the animation list for the next game :D

Thanks for all the positive responses guys, It makes me feel good.  Your offer of music would be great ProgZ, it would certainly add some more atmosphere to future games.  Might even bring it into the first game too!

I've just opend AGSeditor to start laying the foundations of part 2.  Yippee

Nice job Tier & friends. I'm not into the "Star Trek" thing but I've enjoyed this game a lot.

In the next game I'd like to
Spoiler
know a bit more of the characters. Some of them were pretty interesting, but I didn't had many dialogue options to reveal a bit of their background.

One (very minor) remark: personally I don't like the Sierra GUI that much (I find cycling through cursors clumsy). I wonder if I am the only one who repeatedly: a)cycled the cursor to interact b)clicked on a door c)got error message d)[bad words] d)cycled again 'till walk mode e)did it right finally :P

I hope to see part two soon, maybe with author commentary!

Hi, I was enjoying the game, but I got a crash which says that the character was in two rooms.
I started again and got the same crash warning. Still, I liked what I got.

Hi Roger, I'm glad you were enjoying the game and am sorry you experienced a crash.  We did thorough testing but that one obviously didn't come up.  I've private messaged you for further details and hope to resolve the issue soon.  P.S. Welcome to the forums

The thing with games that have automatic doors, is that they should probably support interacting with the doors. Perhaps handle it the same way as walking up to the doors.

Great little ST-fangame. I really enjoyed it. The hotspots are sometimes hard to find and the font is definitly too small but the story was nice and interesting. I`m looking forward to the next episode.

Tier,

Great game, thanks.

I like the atmoshphere and sliding doors are classic, as are sound effects. Fantastic work, looking forward to the next episode.

Only things I'd comment on are the text size and font, very hard to make out, a smoother font (like in future wars) would work allot better, perhaps launched in a window so that contrast never becomes a problem. It would also be cool if any of the action items would guide the character to point placed, currently you have to walk to an item, then interact. Would also be great to explore more of ship, perhaps shuttle, ultimately some class m planets! thats all in the future im sure ! :-)

Keep up good work!

Anthony

Yeah, the interface is a bit tiresome. I have to click twice ona screen and about four times with the right mouse button just ot preform one action. When in the lift shaft first use then walk command is a bit silly.
Also the character gets in the way of hot spots, so I have to change cursor, then click the character away, then change the cursor again then activate a hotspot...a bit tiresome.

A bit repeatable sound in the background and the cahracters should have a bit longer arms (otherwise I liked the design very much).

Other than those 3 minor things, overall I enjoyed the game.

Oh I was only kidding :P Just seemed silly at the time.

Tier and I were just talking on MSN and realised you must be replaying, which we appreciate of course! You caught a lot of stuff we missed in testing the first time around and over a week later you are still helping us fix and update to new versions :)

We would be happy to have you test the new episodes if you like. Speaking of, I just completed the first animation for Distress. Tier has been busy whipping up new rooms too, and one almost needs two hands with which to count them already :D

Yeah, I saw a question in the H&T so I answered. But I hadn't written the walkthrough (http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/star-trek-newton-anomaly-walkthrough-matthew-frith2009/) yet so that's what I just did. And while writing, I stumbled upon this error, just by accident.

And sure, whenever you're close to releasing, give me a shout and I'll give it a serious beta-stage.

Good job with the game. Was putting my tabs on it as the only Star Trek game I was really looking out for. It was good, I think, especially for a first. The ending was more hilarious than hair-standing (like those creepy horror games) which I felt was rather awkward.

Other than that, keep up the good work. Looking forward to Part 2.

For those who don't know yet the second episode has been announced by Tier himself! Go look, drool and wait expectantly.

Hi!

Finished the game yesterday and left a comment on the games db. Just some more details here:

This one was annoing and reduced my immersion because I stopped playing to look in a walkthrough but without success:
Spoiler
I had all vials, knew the illness of the guy and which two medications he needs but the game still wouldn't let me lookup the vials in the book. I randomly reclicked all objects until the lookup was finally enabled
[close]

There also were some typos.

I really liked the puzzles and the interactions with the other characters. Very clever! Also great animations.

Looking forward to the next part!
