Dualnames...YOU DA MAN!
Mazal Tov & Happy towel day!
Downloaded just to see how it looks, cause I want to wait for the voice pack...
Looks awesome!
All right! Congrats, you hoopy frood!
hooray..
...must do voice over..
As probably no one is interested in playing this game right now anyway, I recommend to rather read the philosophical dialogs of Mr James Spanos (http://hardydev.com/2010/05/25/the-lost-dialogues-of-spanos-hitchhikers-edition/) only just published at HardyDev. Especially since a good portion of people reading this thread is mentioned in them.
Happy towel day and congrats with this release!
Great to see the game finally getting to the next phase.
I enjoyed the whole process...
WHOOP WHOOP!

Downloading now!
OH MY F*CKING CHRIST!!
I will download and play ASAP, Dualnuts!
Infocom's version was one of the first adventure games I've ever played. The problem for me was, that I was 14 years old and my english was very bad, so I could not finish it. Anyway, I liked the mood of the game, especially as I've read the books.
Nice to see that there is a remake, I definitly will play it.
On the meantime I've re-uploaded.

Heh I'm the 101st person who downloaded it. I wonder whether the one before me got any kind of gift or not.
Bravo Duals!
Downloading, and I might even have time to play it... :P
Good job getting it done. This month's mags has already succeeded!
This...is actually a game? Not only a jack-in-the-box installer that breaks my computer and then makes fun of me for not wearing a towel?
Great!

you get hit by a flying house brick as well (by exiting from the front of the house back to the front door without doing anything). They bundle your corpse in an ambulance, and you spend a few turns as a stiff before the Vogons come along to demolish the Earth (pretty sure you know that though!).

This is probably correct, though Davzare, I've pmed you, I want this 1% chance off the system.

In that case, does it depend on what mode you're playing it in? I like my Arthur silent as in the original game (and the first thing I did was to set things that way), and I've only tried the "normal" difficulty mode so far. Would either of those affect it?

No. There is a button on the options GUI, that says
Comments:ON Click on that, and tadda, Arthur will shut it.

I had to spend the night in the hospital last night so I missed the grand premiere.... but I'm back now, I have a cup of coffee ready and I'm about to see what James Kratos, I mean Spanos, has been up to that last 40 years!:) I expect nothing but total greatness!:)

I tried the unreal engine for a while, but I had some problem with the alpha channels. :D
I must say I'm loving everything so far, especially the controls and music. Oh, and the inventory items graphics.... And the dolphins in the main menu.
Well done on the release, especially such an appropriate one!
I've not played much but it seems to be looking nice so far. LOTS of text, though. I'm guessing it will play a lot nicer when the voice pack gets added...
P.S. The inventory is a puzzle in itself! ;)
First impressions- it's excellent, indeed:)
When I saw the first screen I panicked a bit, against myself... :)
I've been doing well so far, without using walkthrough, because I really want to crack this game on my own, but I feel I have stumbled upon a dead end:
Spoiler
I didn't get the babel fish until later, after the vogan leader had read his poem. So the autosave puts me now back to when Ford talks to the guard, trying to talk him out of being a guard, and I still don't know the password for the machine/ glass case. I assume once I'm in the airlock it's dead end?( cos using thumb just kills me and nothing else seems to work.... I tried looking at Leon's website but it doesn't explain what the word from the poem is... help!:) :) :) :)
The word from the poem is random.
Spoiler
You need to press the button to hear which word from the second verse of the poem you need. But you can only understand it after you have the Babel fish. If you first heard the poem, then got the Babel fish and then press the button, you must have quite a memory.. and understand Vogon ;-)
I've never been able to listen to the poem before getting the fish...
I replayed that part and indeed is the moment of autosave a bit awkward and leaves you with a problem. If you say you have the fish, I can give you the options to try (there are three) and continue from there if you want to use the saved game.
I'm also unable to get the fish afterwards unless...
Spoiler
you hang the coat before listening to the poem.
Congratulations on getting this done Dual!
Downloading now with feelings of pleasant anticipation...!

Probably yes, it will play better in voice pack. Nobody likes non-voice acted text in quantity. Well, also quality over quantity as well. Your first feedback on the inventory is what I kept in mind while revising this over and over and over again. I was 100% sure, it wouldn't satisfy you as a person ( don't take this wrong or anything :D), but what I had to sacrifice to make it more 'playable', wasn't really worth it and I had already put some great job on it.
The interface has been revised millions of times, and it's one thing I learned from Cat Lady and on, that the interface should be planned very carefully at the beginning of the game, and not just changed in the meantime.

Ah, sorry you had to find that one. Now it's fixed, you can either re-download and re-play, or just tell me to make you a savegame (it's not much to ask and I'll have it in no time). You went pretty well so far! I'd kill myself if this one bug that fell off ruined it for you. There are many occasions and circumstances in the babel fish room, most of those don't even pass your head, but it's probably the heaviest room I've ever coded. I feel so stupid, that I just didn't guess the one chance for that autosave.
Intense Degree, Alan v.Drake, Dataflashsabot: Thanks mates!

I also think the inventory system is impressive, but a bit hard to use, as it detaches you from the game, and doesn't seem integrated. i.e. when wanting to use an inventory item on an object in the room, you have to go out of the room, select the inv item, click exit inventory, then find the room item again... I know this common to most AGS games, but it just feels clunky and long winded in my opinion.
Also:
QuoteThe inventory interface is far too complex. All the buttons and things are very swish, though. Well done!
I don't mind with anyone's opinion, the interface is the best I could deliver, but it may fuck things up for you at some point, and that is pretty understandable. I'm happy, and you're one of the greatest guys on the forums. Also not in my "people to tell to fuck off" list! ;)
The rest of you, if you've finished the game, please rate it and/or comment.
Reading my comments back, apart from the "complex" element, you sorted it all out. And, on reflection it does suit the style of the game to have a multi-layered inventory.

Thanks bulbapuck, also informing that now both links are direct downloads. ;)
The game freezes when I try to run it in Win98 compatibility mode (I play AGS games in this mode to avoid problems with saving). Could you please fix it?
No? It's not up to me to ask something like that. Not all engines/games/programs work under Win98 compatibility, so this is an AGS engine thing mostly. There's absolutely anything I did or can do, to fix this. Due to the big bunch of thing AGS is handling, you probably get this because of that. What kind of Windows are you using?
OMG!
Congrats' Dualname! I'm downloading it right now. I was waiting for this one since... let's say... 20 years. :D

Great, I assume you rated the game then, cause so far, from those I know Leon was the first, and I doubt anyone has rated it, even without completing the game,it'd be nice to see some feedback.
It's not very diverse once you finish it in any mode. If you remember the solution it can be solved in both ways, hard mode, is just always there to remind you how cruel the game was. 400 points is quite a score, but you can actually get more than that.

Thanks! Now I've got to message Leon (who messaged me concerning the 'bug') and tell him everything's okay - at least concerning the end of the Damogran section. In response to his message, I also told him about another possible bug - an apparent bug (but a survivable one) in the boat section.

Great then! So far very impressive! :D
Is an update to your game currently in the work?
I'll need to restart the game from scratch a third time because the autosave feature saved me in a walking dead situation and my previous savegame got corrupted for some reason, at which point I'd rather wait 'til the game is in a more stable version before I try again.
Also, other than making inventory management and navigation a chore, what's the point in having a limited inventory in Strag mode if you can simply drop everything you carry to store it in the Thing?
The thing existed in the original game, but not all of the guys notice its use, and it's not stated nowhere in the original. Some people thing they should constantly get rid of it. ;)
I think it's quite stable as it is. What dead-end situation was that blueskirt? Also the corruption of the save-game, beats me.
You seem angry and for a reason I cannot argue with. Sorry if I kind of break the fun to you. It wasn't intended in any way.
The game has lots of code lines. The auto-save is supposed to save your life in a good way. Just some situations we didn't check. And that's no excuse, but on the beginning of May I almost gave up on this game for a third time, and then some great guys pushed to finish this on the 25th. The game was barely ready for that day, but I had to stop making excuses for stalling it.
I will have a huge beta-test right now, checking all possible situations in the game. So if you want to wait for a couple of hours be my guest.
Okies, done, I've fixed some small thingies.
Nah, I'm not angry, and I intend to finish the game one of these days.
I'm at the part where you can hop in 3 or 4 different scenarios, one with Ford, one with Arthur, one with Zaphod... First thing I notice about that part is during the black screen moment where you gotta look, touch, listen, etc, your way out of the darkness, the game randomly crashes when I try to interact with the triangle, the huge spiky tail and sometimes with the circle.
I mess around a bit in Arthur and Ford's scenarios, I'm quickly led to believe I did something wrong or forgot to solve a puzzle at the start of the game, so I decide to restart from the start, this time paying closer attention to the small details. It pays because I solved a puzzle I didn't solve earlier. I reach the part where I was before I restarted, instead of getting Arthur or Ford's scenarios, I get Zaphod's one instead, the game autosave in the boat, auto-save during the ceremony, I spend close to 40 minutes trying to figure out a way to escape without success, a quick glance at the hint thread reveal I should be having
Spoiler
the fluff and a key
to proceed further, which I don't. Since the autosave is in Zaphod's scenario, I try to reload my previous savegame, which I saved in the Heart of Gold, just before the scenarios splitting moment, but that one got mysteriously corrupted and my last savegame is in the pub, at the start of the game.
I'd restart right away but right now I'm a bit tired of replaying the same part, I'll give it another try later this week, when I'll have changed my mind with something else.
As for the inventory, if it was just a matter of limited inventory, it wouldn't be that bad, where it is problematic is that you can't select items when they're in a container, you must first make some free space in your inventory by cramming items into other containers, then remove the items you want to select from their current containers before you can select or use them.
When I realized I was spending more time micro managing my inventory than I did exploring the HOG or solving puzzles, I just stopped wasting my time with all those containers, I dropped every single object I had and began to use the Thing like a limit-less extension of my inventory. And in bonus, I always have free space whenever I encounter a new object I can take, and my items are all in one place which make it more convenient when I'm looking for something. And since I doubt dropping everything in the Thing is the way H2G2 was meant to be played, even if it's more convenient this way, one can wonder what's the point to the containers and limited inventory.
Weird no one actually crashed the game on that part of the game. Are you playing the game using some filter (HighQuality2x ecc?)
EDIT: Okay, crashed it. It says Game has been modified since SAVE. Okay. That only used to happen when I scripted the game. It's a thing that happens when you change something and try to load an old savegame. There's nothing in-game that should cause this. I'm bringing Chris attention to this.
That one got mysteriously corrupted and my last savegame is in the pub, at the start of the game.
When you say corrupted can you be a little specific? Cause I'd definitely love to investigate on that.
I do get your point on the thing matter, and it's something i thought very thoroughly, the whole dropping items was a part of the game I reconsidered many times. The thing was decided as the best measure on how to solve certain issues that would have had me abandon this game.
I'm really sorry you had to play the game over and over again. It's what I was afraid at the first point. The bugs.

Okay, guys fixed. Re-uploading in a couple of hours. I did a workaround.

What thing(s) have been fixed?

The error message I get in the dark room and the one I get when I try to load my previous savegame are the same: Game has been modified since save; unable to restore game. The thing is, I never changed anything in the game settings (the setting.exe file) and the only option I ever messed with from the options menu was the Skip Style to "Timer Off". And every other savegames works perfectly, all but this one.
-edit-
Currently downloading the latest version, I'll try to take a break of Curse of Monkey Island tomorrow to give this new version a try.

I have no idea why this is happening, as I said this is an AGS bug.
And I'm not just blaming it on the engine. It's irrelevant to the options blueskirt, it happens under other circumstances.
Sslaxx it happens on the darkscene.
blueskirt. Okay just re-uploaded.
EDIT: I feel compelled to apologize for any of the bugs that spoil this game. If anyone wants a savegame till the point he reached I can fastly make one for him.
I made the mistake of downloading on day one and not following the thread. :(
No need for a save game though. I liked playing what I played through thus far.
I can see the work you put into this, DN. Cheers.
Just finished it. Here's what I think.
For a big fan of Douglas Adams' literature like me it was a truly great experience to revisit places and events from the book. I think you have captured the HHGTG absurd and abstract world very well and pretty much how I imagined it in my head. The humour never fails and the game is incredibly funny- and very clever- most of the time.
Graphically it's great and there's a real variety to backgrounds and characters. I'm used to your art style now and I think it suits the game perfectly. As a matter of fact, from now on whenever I will think of HHGTG I will probably have the image of your Arthur Dent imprinted in my head:)
My favourite part is definitely
Spoiler
the foggy planet with where man-eating frog lives and all of the stuff going on on Earth before it gets destroyed
.
Something needs to be said about the puzzles, though... I know it's a remake and you were sticking faithfully to the original puzzles from the text game but I found them incredibly hard! Maybe I'm just not that good at adventure games after all but I don't think I'd ever be able to finish it without the walkthrough. In most cases- when I referred to the walkthrough- it was like: Damn, why didn't I think of that! But there were also cases when I knew I'd never figure some stuff out on my own:
Spoiler
putting fluff in the toolbox, the whole atomic plotter thing, giving cheese sandwich to Arthur- I just kept thinking- why the fuck do they keep dying?
That being said, I understand the absurdity of some puzzles was meant to reflect the crazy Monthy Python-like sense of humour from the book and I'm sure hardcore adventure game players will see it as a great challange ( that they can crack in one afternoon). I swear to God I didn't want to resort to Leon's walkthrough but after a while I just felt helpless... and very tempted.
I actually liked the music as it is in current form! I've been told that Xenogia works on some tracks for the next version of the game and I'm sure they'll be awesome, but all through the game I never felt like anything was lacking.
Also, I didn't mind the difficult inteface- I thought it was pretty good, once I learned how it worked- it didn't take me more than half an hour to know where everything was. I think it made H2G2 very special, one of a kind game.
To sum it up, I enjoyed H2G2 a lot! My only concern is the crazy difficulty level... but in the end it only makes the experience last longer :P I suppose most of AGSers won't struggle as much as me. I think it's a beautiful, complex and well-built game and definitely worth waiting 400 years it took to make it:)
I regret to say that I've been too busy to play this game as of yet, but it's definitely on my to-do list.
I just wanted to congratulate Dualnames on having this game selected as a Pick of the Month! This is one remake I'm definitely not going to pass up.

I was equally stunned with it being chosen ;)
GrimI'm glad that even playing the game by a walkthrough, you've had some fun! Most of the game is hinted on Strag mode, but you can never be twice sure for the whole part of the game. I do agree with you on certain things. The graphics probably just get by, and that was the point. I'm not sure I'd call them great.
On the music side, I composed the tracks very luckily and I had some great help from Dan Neshor (ShiverMeSideways) that composed the intro and outro songs.
Not much worth re-downloading, but I'm finished with the uploads and re-uploads. I've added the walkthrough and I've hinted all the parts that were hard on you guys. You probably won't miss it now.
Gah, you wait 2.5 years then choose to release the game on the very day I go on holiday for 2 weeks!! :o ::)

I carefully planned this to happen on that day. I didn't knew it was your holiday day.
I love that part from your blog comment:"Wait... you mean you've actually released HHGTG ?!? Wow... I'd kinda figured it would never happen!"And with Grim's "and definitely worth waiting 400 years it took to make it:)"I get the picture. :D
I hope it is what you expect it to be. And thanks for everyone that has rated the game so far and SSH for choosing it as a pick of the month.

...Did you justify having Arthur suddenly end up in his own mind without explanation by pretending it was a massive glitch in the game? Because that's bloody brilliant.
I think I've found another bug. Using the Nutrimate Interface on the Nutrimat doesn't do anything. Also, even though I'm using the new version, I'm still getting crashes in Dark. THe resulting autosave files still get errors, but they're no longer modified file errors (instead, the exact error varies), and I think the autosave becomes usable again after it's saved somewhere other than a crashed Dark. Also, the errors no longer spread to non-autosave saves.
Hey BiggerJ, glad you liked that scene. It took me a lot of brainstorming in the forums, on IRC and on Skype, and if it wasn't for AngelicCharon it wouldn't be there.
Also thanks to CaptainD for this:

You haven't completed all the scenarios that's why you can't use the interface on the Nutrimat ;). So that's no bug. As for the autosave thing, I've probably fixed it now, so I therefore re-uploaded. Now no loading or saving happens on the Dark Room or Global script related to it, so you probably won't get any bugs.
Okay, like you asked in your latest message, I'm about to send my save files to the email address listed in your profile. But remember, they're from the version I've been using, which is the one before the current version (I'm sure of that, because I downloaded the latest version to check - I haven't run the latest version, just read the changes file).
Edit: Email sent.
Also, if possible, could you please upload the game's music files? There something I just can't help but like about the game's soundtrack, especially the Heart of Gold corridor tune.

And here's what I found today.
http://captaind-pc-gaming.blogspot.com/2010/06/h2g2-review.html
A review by none other than CaptainD. I probably should take this into pm but you're bloody honest, and I couldn't disagree with any point made in the review.
Except for the fact that Marvin wasn't done correctly, but you may be right.
There was a constant battle in my head between Easier game or more true to the original. Point is the deaths are part of the original, they add a funny twist. I hate deaths in games, but really loved them on that game. I know it may end up annoying, but its all there, everything is hinted as much as I could without spoiling the atmosphere. I strongly thing the game is hard yes, but the solution is there.
I loved the review, and I agree with it. I don't except it to be anyone's cup of Tea, cause it's not.
I assume you rated the game on the games page "Bad" on the puzzle thingy. :D
To sum up, I find the review correct at every aspect.
EDIT: Woot, in order to stick to my treadmark double post. Here's a great review by Gnome's Lair (http://www.gnomeslair.com/2010/06/hitchhikers-guide-to-galaxy-remade.html)
Gnome is still in the process of playing it, but damn look at that excitement. ;)
I'm not sure how I'd rate the puzzles - some were brilliant, some were baffling - but that could very well be me being dense! ;D
Glad you liked the review, even though I had to admit to not loving the game. One problem is perhaps that I never actually played the original (the shame... but as I said, the text adventure genre as a whole kind of skipped by me at the time). If it's any help I found the original King's Quest really annoying too! ;)
H2G2 is a fantastic achievement and being difficult isn't particularly a bad thing, but you made me kill Arthur Dent a lot of times... and I like Arthur ::)
Is there a walkthrough for this game? If so where?
But of course there is.. (http://gamesolutions.efzeven.nl/the-hitchhikers-guide-to-the-galaxy-walkthrough-james-spanos2009/) ;)

Also comes along with the downloaded game rar. Just in case your internet dies on the most important part. :)
Here is one thing that bothers me: When you drop the thing your aunt gave you which you don’t know what it is it doesn’t seem to come back to you, and the whale seems to never splat, which completely ruins the alternate way to get the flowerpot. Was that on purpose?
I was never aware there was an actual alternate way to get the flowerpot really. I checked a couple of walkthroughs but for all I know it was only via:
Spoiler
the thumb
The other way is mentioned in the built-in hint system of the original game’s special edition. I quote:
Spoiler
What is the thing my aunt gave me?
â€" Have you tried examining it?
â€" Have you tried getting rid of it?
â€" You’ve probably noticed that it keeps turning up.
â€" If you leave it behind, it will pop up about a dozen moves later, sometimes on the groud where you are, sometimes in your inventory, and sometimes in your gown pocket. (The thing will only "follow" you when you are Arthur.)
â€" There’s something else that you probably haven’t noticed about the thing your aunt gave you.
â€" You can put things in it. In fact, you can put almost every takeable item into the thing at the same time.
â€" This is useful for transporting more objects than you can carry, but it isn’t ever necessary to do so.
â€" Because of these two properties (auto-return and containment) the thing your aunt gave you provides an alternate solution of one of the puzzles in the game.
â€" It’s a puzzle toward the very end of the game.
â€" It’s the puzzle of getting the flowerpot out of the whale.
How do I get the pot from the whale?
â€" There are two ways to do this.
â€" One way involves the Thumb.
â€" The other method involves the thing your aunt gave you which you don’t know what it is.
â€" To obtain the flowerpot using the thumb, just pick up the pot and hitchhike.
â€" For more details, see the question on getting out of the whale.
â€" To obtain the flowerpot using the aunt’s gift: the aunt’s gift has an unusual property you may not have discovered. See the question about the aunt’s gift.
â€" Just put the flowerpot inside the aunt’s gift and then wait until the whale splats. Within a few turns after leaving Dark, the aunt’s gift should reappear, containing the pot.
Awww, that's so cool. Shamefully to admit I wasn't aware of that. :(

Well, I only knew it because I read those hints.
Edit:I found a list of all the hints here (http://beej.us/slag/hhgginv.slg). Maybe you will find other things you missed.
Hey tzachs, sorry to keep you (and everyone interested ) on the waiting line.
The whole problem lies with people being busy that's all. Calin is working hard on those lines, and I'm sure he'll eventually deliver them. I'm really not into changing another narrator again really. If Calin never manages, then no voice pack really. I'm sure he'll be able to find the time and slowly deliver them.
And I told my other voice-actors that unless that role is delivered, it'd be a shame to work on their lines for nothing. Cause it's a big percentage of the games lines, and its essential that this role is complete. Several minor roles have been delivered, and all roles are there apart from Eddie's, Ford's, Dent's and Narrator (Calin).
I've got almost all roles there, if I recall correctly, but lately I've been not working on HHGTG to be completely honest. I'm much more into darker games. I think comedy games really are a great genre but not one I've been good at. And definitely there will be a voice pack to this game at some point if all goes well, but surely not a sequel to this on my side.
HHGTG features in this month's RetroGamer magazine (UK). A brief capsule review and a picture. I'll try to get a scan up.
Please do!

Bah, I read an 'adventure gaming' themed copy of that mag a while back and saw in the opening pages a response by one of the writers to the genre - something akin to "Never liked them, they are the equivelant to apes banging rocks together". Not to take away from a great achievement though, a great feat indeed! It's only that one moron that rubbed me the wrong way...
I think apes banging rocks together would be kind of entertaining..

It's okay, I get your point. I don't like certain attitudes myself. The phrase by the way that point and click adventures are the equivalent of apes banging the rocks, was what Douglas Adams used to refer to the genre. So I can't really choose a side.
