Is there an objective to this game?
(deleted)
Heh, lil' bug - because I couldn't really understand the game mechanics in the very beginning, something silly happened, just a graphical glitch.
If you stand in front of the bed and jump, you don't get on top of the bed, and the message "Do you want to sleep?" appears and then disappears. So I kept jumping, never on the bed and always just on the floor, and hit Y when the message appeared. Naturally, when he animated getting in bed, he was not on the bed, so the sheets were off.
Only after the dream did I realize I could jump onto the bed.
EDIT - And, er, your GUI doesn't scroll along with the room? That's odd.
Also, could you please edit the image in the first post, turn it into a vertical-oriented image instead of horizontal? It really screws up the way the thread is displayed.
Can't really get into the game right now, but me likey. Visually very interesting.

QuoteBTW: GUI tackyness is deliberate.
Way kewl.
Looks Shnazzy! Reminds me of 'Noir' style comics
Iwill have to try it out.
This game is surreal, and I mean that in the best way possible.
I've tried exploring and ended up dying a few times, and I still can't figure out what to do, but I don't think I am supposed to.
Interesting game ! Very strange but nice.
How did you make the backgrounds scroll at differents speeds ? It's great !

Thank you very much :)
I will try this module in a future game !
Hi hofmeier,
just want to say that I've just downloaded and tried it out for some minutes and think the style and graphics are really interesting and well done. It's very artistic and surreal.
I can't wait to have a go at it with more time.
Congratulations.
I downloaded and played for a few minutes this morning, can't wait to get back to it. Not sure if i scored any real points yet, but i like the game with it's interesting pathways, and secret passages. Don't want to give too much a way. All I can say is very well done and i look foward to putting some real time into exploring this game. :)
Been playing the game a lot. Two things. The game visually looking is superb. Especially the scrolling thing. However it must be said that total freedom without a purpose actually ruins the game.
Ermmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....
...is there no way to save the game?
On a game that encourages freedom? ???
is anyone scoring points in this game? I am not going to give up too easily, but I am beginning to believe I am misinterpreting what I am suppose to do. And as of now I can't seem to find any new direction to go. I might have to open a hints post. ???
Exploration isn't about "being told what to do" - without being told what to do, there is no such thing "what you are supposed to do". You're the director.

I'm not sure if I understand what you are saying, and if this reply was directly related to my post. But if it is...
A game , especially those that have points usually have objectives, and rewards (points) as you are progressing towards those objectives. This gives the player a sense of accomplishment and a sense they are doing something 'right'. Now I haven't even gotten 1 point in this game, so obviously I am feeling like I am not 'doing what I am suppose to' or progressing through any puzzles. I am all for exploration and 'trial by error/discovery' but all I am asking is... Am I suppose to be able to accomplish that in this game? Or, is it simply a demo illustrating platform gameplay and parallax scrolling? I don't want to try interpreting the dreams and looking for clues if there is no actual puzzles to solve.

Ha. This was a fun diversion from my busy schedule. I love the production design. Typography, yay!
Very nicely put together. And very striking. I liked it a lot. :)
A beautiful,
beautiful game which I'll recommend to anyone. It is charming to play a completely different, enveloping gaming experience, to wander lonely as a cloud driven only by this innate, genuine will to "discover" what's around us.
Graphics and scripting are top notch, SFX do an excellent job in making "Jackyard"'s world even more rel and enjoyable.

NOTES:This is my first swing at AGS. While I did consider using other game engines to produce this project (it's often mentioned in the forums that GameMaker is better suited to developing platform games), I was drawn to the challenge of making it work with AGS
Nice attitude: be assured that you're game will for sure wide the horizons of many AGSers!
Interesting game. More than anything else, however, it makes me want to know who you are, hofmeier. A person who puts Goethe and a dessert menu on his website and German phrases in his game... do you have German roots?
Yeah, *that's* the greatest mystery about him.
Next thing you know he'll be making a game based on Faust.
Tolworthy will beat him to it.
But I digress.
Hofmeier (I mean, come on, his name doesn't even sound german at all, does it?), I'd just like you to know, because I think it might be interesting or valuable information for you, that I really want to play this game, I really do - but I've been very busy lately and simply have no time to sit down and immerse myself in a game which I can't save/load, or just quit and return to the exact point I left off (a subtle alternative to save/load which satisfies pretty much everyone, methinks :) ). I.e. - because I'm forced to play it through in a single session, I'm barred from playing it, and probably will be for a loooooooong time, as I'm entering a very busy time.
Food for thought, and not just for you either, methinks.

Well, not really... I'm a very typical American cross-bred mutt, I suppose. I included the German in the game (hopefully my translation attempts didn't miss the mark too badly) because I wanted those sections to seem somewhat stark, austere, and hopefully maybe even mysterious. I enjoy the overall feeling of a few German phrases, simply because of the linguistic after-taste they leave in the brain... Hopefully that doesn't sound too snooty or pretentious.
It doesn't. Drama often lives on the emotional impression its lines leave behind.

As to the other part of your question, the dessert menu (http://"http://www.richardhofmeier.com/dessert.htm") on the site is the old menu from Seattle's Cafe Metropolitain, where I was their executive dessert chef.
I'm impressed.
Hi,
I love the design of the game, particularly the dream sequences. Thanks for using the parralax module. Am I right in thinking that the score bar is a little bit of whimsical satire? Or am I just really bad at this game?
I hope you make more games in this vein, and I have a couple of suggestions. Feel free to disegard all or some:
A wider range of locales would be welcome (though perhaps I haven't explored fully).
I felt that the character's googley eyes, and a couple of his wackier animations detracted a little from the sombre and contemplative atmosphere.
I also would like to save, not to escape falling into a pit of sentences, but to build on explorations over several sessions.
Jumping can be a little awkward because of the way the character 'hits his head' when he jumps from a position below another platform, like the bed. This made exploring a little more difficult for me.
Finally, I would like to read more: books, notes, messages left by other explorers perhaps. I would also like a wider range of devices to operate, but that may just be my love of machines.
Congratulations on a really interesting game. Now I'm going to read the hints...

Hofmeier (I mean, come on, his name doesn't even sound german at all, does it?),
Whether or not I missed the irony in that post, I just wanted to add this to the discussion: Hofmeier is a quite common name in Southern Germany and Austria.
I am quite fascinated by this game, it sort of reminds me of a short film I have seen a long time ago, where there were two creatures, one white, one black, struggling to spread their colors into the other one's life and dreams...hard to describe a short movie ;)
Only one tiny bit of criticism: I'll have to agree with Ali, the loony eyes kind of vexed me all the time...
QuoteHofmeier is a quite common name in Southern Germany and Austria.
Ayuh, was being fully ironic. Of course, what made it all the more fun is, he considers himself as just a typical American cross-bred mutt.
A most unusual cathegorization, but there you go.
