Title: Two of a Kind - v1.01
Post by: Dave Gilbert on Fri 05/11/2004 03:02:21
Two of a Kind
An Epileptic Fish adventure
===========================

Background
---------------

Over half a millennia ago, a meteor crashed to the earth. It was hardly noticed, and soon all traces of its existence vanished. Hundreds of years later, the town of Bluff City was founded on the same spot.Ã,  It wasn't long before the early settlers noticed something strange happening. Every child born in Bluff City was bestowed with a special power, such as levitation, or the power to turn invisible. These "gifts" were a scientific impossibility, ignoring all laws of genetics. With its heightened popularity, Bluff City grew and expanded.

Tim and Tiffany Walters are fraternal twins, born and raised in Bluff City. After a traumatic childhood (which they don't talk about), they became extremely close and depend on each other for everything. To pay the bills, they have opened a Private Investigator business.Ã,

Characters:
--------------

Timothy Walters - Special Power: Levitation

Tim acts like an older brother to his sister Tiffany, despite the fact that he was born three minutes after her. He is strangely overprotective of her, and is constantly making sure that she's okay. He is very moody, often depressed, and looks at the world through jaded, cynical eyes. His one joy comes from listening to rock music.Ã,  He is particularly fond of KISS; he has all their CDs and has even met some of the members.

Tiffany Walters - Special Power: Talking to Animals

Tiffany is cheerful, happy-go-lucky and childish. Not only is the glass constantly half full for her, but it's also pink with smiley faces drawn on it.Ã,  She is obsessed with stuffed animals, of which she has many, and believes that she can always get her way by saying "Please!" often enough. Tiffany is always trying to get her brother Tim to have fun, which usually consists of a game of Candy-Land.

Notes
-------

This game was originally made for the AGS Team Competition, which ran for six weeks in the summer of 2004.Ã,  The team consisted of BerserkerTails, Dart, Scotch, Yoke and myself.Ã,  We managed to make the deadline, but decided that the game was still too empty and full of bugs to justify an official release.Ã,  Three-and-a-half months later, it's sweet and sparkly and ready for public consumption.Ã,  Creating this game has been a fantastic experience.Ã,  We all hope you enjoy it.

UPDATES

11-5
A minor bug involving the follow function inside the office is now fixed.

12-11
A number of niggly fixes, and a buffed up closing creditsÃ,  Ã, Matthew Gardener (Wogoat) drew a number of GORGEOUS pictures to display over the ending sequence.Ã,  Well worth re-playing the game just to see them, in my opinion.Ã,  Here's a preview:

This isn't Mittens Kwest?!?  ;)

I'll give this very nice looking game when I'm back at my place.

Yay!

Bad news, there seems to be something wrong with the switching of characters. Like in the office or outside the story, I try to switch characters and instead of going to the other room, it somehow brings the character to that room! it's really weird.

Yea, i know what netmonkey means. When I switch characters in a room, sometimes the character suddenly appears way over somewhere, off a walkable area.

Also when you have follow character on, and you go back into your office, only one character enters, and the other waits in the hall. I assume this is a bug...

Other than that, it's a pretty good game so far.  :)

If "follow" is activated and you walk into another room, it takes a little while for the other character to appear.Ã,  If you switch characters during this waiting period, the other character will instantly appear in the current room.

If you activate "follow", the other character instantly apears in the current room to follow you.

Is that what is happening to you?Ã,  It should be explained in the readme file.

As for the office... yes that seems to be a bug.Ã,  It always amazes me that after months of diligent testing when everything seems perfect, hideous bugs are always uncovered within moments of release!

/me stealthily uploads a fixed version before anybody notices.

I noticed, becuase it was only a 3MB file when I tried to download it first and was corrupt... I guess becuase you were still uploading at the time  >:(

But looking forward to a great game. Can you post all of the contributing team members here (for people who don't want a 10MB download)

I shall download now.

*edit*

Ok so is it me being stupid, or have you guys missed a big bug?

When i go into Gilberts general (nice btw) i use the door to exit again and i just can't.
I get the general 'what am i supposed to do with it' kind of message without being able to exit.

Lovely game though; the script, layout, story, coding and art are all excellent.

I'm glad everyone is enjoying the game! I had a blast making it.

Oh, and for whoever asked, the entire team was:

Leader/Writer: Dave Gilbert
Graphics: Dart and Scotch
Music: BerserkerTails
Programming: YOke

Though by the end we all did everyone else's jobs. The end game credits detail it a bit more.

I am so close to the ending, but can't figure out what to do:

Spoiler
The demon is opening the portal, and I'm pretty sure I have to get him into limbo by not grounding the portal. I can't seem to get a circle drawn on the floor though.

I've tried a few other things; Reading the book makes no difference, and shooting the demon with acid does nothing.

Really great game, you guys should be proud.

Obviously I'm a little dusty at playing adventure games - I'm stuck as stuck can be.  ;D Oh well, I'll keep at it... though it doesn't help that in most scenes the game is sloooooooooooooooooow as all hell.

Is this a sign my computer is that old? I've never had this trouble with any AGS games before, though.
Title: Re: Two of a Kind
Post by: BerserkerTails on Sun 07/11/2004 16:15:39
Suspect Device: The game likes to be slow on my computer during some scenes as well (Particularly the bee scene). What help, is going into WinSetup, and changing the resolution down to 320 x 200, and turning off Anti-Aliased Scaled sprites. The graphics might not be QUITE as sharp, but it doesn't really ruin anything, and speeds up the game.

I just finished it. Congratulations, this is a great game!
I loved the characters and dialogues, and the different opinions you can read when Tim and Tiffany look at something. It is one of the most detailed AGS games I played. There is so much to discover, even if you are stuck ;-)

Spoiler
I noticed some little mistakes in the dialogues.  Just an example: In the last room with the demon, the twins still speak of exploring the mansion when asked what to do next. There are some similar mistakes in the game, I don't remember them all. But it's nothing serious.

I just finished it. Congratulations, this is a great game!
I loved the characters and dialogues, and the different opinions you can read when Tim and Tiffany look at something. It is one of the most detailed AGS games I played. There is so much to discover, even if you are stuck ;-)

Yes, absolutely agree bout different examines!
Is it long?
Title: Re: Two of a Kind

It's relatively long. I found that during the countless times I played through the game, even when I knew the solution to every puzzle, it still took me about an hour to finish. And that was quick run throughs!

I think the first time you play it, the puzzles will boost the gameplay time another hour, at least, and the dialogues and descriptions the twins give can boost it even furth. I'd say the game will last you about 4 hours, for the first play-through.

the dialogue down to the characters is excellent!
only problem i have is that its sort of laggy on my comp, other than that excellent game..
this is probably the coolest game ive played for AGS

keep up the excellent work

Great game, just finished it.

Two things, though.
I, too, had problems with the character switching.
Spoiler
After visiting the bedroom with Tif and switching to Tim, he appeared in the middle of the back wall and was very small. (I think because I left him in front of the mansion.)
After that, everytime the two kids were in different rooms and I switched, the room didn't change but instead the other character appeared at the bottom center of the current room.

The second thing is the dead end(?)
Spoiler
I haven't tried, but what if I hadn't sent Tif down to the croc but Tim without the acid in his inv? Sorry if I'm wrong but I'm tired now and too lazy to try.

Anyways, it was fun to play and the 'cool' animals like the player bird were greatÃ,  ;D

Thanks for this beautiful game, I finished it last weekend. Very nice.

I think I found another bug:
Spoiler
When one of the twins reads the magic book and you switch to the other one, the first one disappears.  I encountered this bug in the showdown with the demon. The game crashed after I tried to put the sticker on the demon, because the sister was supposed to move (due to a script) but was not in the room anymore (because of the book-bug). I hope you understand what I tried to say...

I always love your games, Dave. They are always unique and have some sort of dry humour which I really love so much. The interactions of the twins are so terribly funny, I think you must be a very popular guy Dave  ;D (Although America did not listen to me when I demanded "Dave Gilbert for president" after your released Bestowers of Eternity... but well, maybe next time) And this time you worked together with some wonderful artists! Most perfect example how working together on a game can work :) Congratulations, one of my all time favourites already.

Hey!

Though it would be appropriate to say a few words at this point... I just wanted to take the time to thank everybody for the amazing feedback. Working on this game has been a great experience for me. This really was my first attempt at scripting a full game, and it was one hell of a learning experience! (I actually had GFX as my main task when I signed up for the competition..) I've had some gruesome showdowns with the FollowCharacter function, the bees were truly a handful.

As for the team, I couldn't have had more luck. We were on the same wavelength from day one. Dave's experience made us all feel confident, and the whole team were supportive towards eachother. In particular I remember the very last hours before the deadline. Dave was frantically working on getting the game ready for delivery, and Dart and me sat on IRC electronically holding his hand through it all. It was a special atmosphere through it all, and I have many such fond memories.

As I said, this was my first experience with scripting an entire game. On top of that we tried to do some stuff that was somewhat out of the ordinary, and I committed quite a few sins against good programming conduct in the process. Bugtesting got rid of most of them, but I hear that some are still running rampant. ;)
We'll propably fix those and some other things in the not too distant future, won't we Dave?

Once again, thanks for all the encouraging words, and special thanks to my fellow teammembers!

As the scripter I know the importance of having an EGO (Oh my god, what a pun!) so I want to finish off by saying: Remember us at the AGS awards!Ã,  :=

Since Yoke opened the floodgates, I'll add my own two cents. I can safely say that creating this game was one of the most inspiring experiences of my recent life.Ã,  The support, enthusiasm, and all-around energy of the team caught me my surprise from the beginning.Ã,  What was even more surprising was that this energy level was maintained throughout the full six weeks (including when I was away at Mittens).

Like Yoke, I have many pleasant memories of the final 24 hours before the deadline.Ã,  I think we accomplished more in that one stretch then we did in the whole five months it took to make the game.Ã,  And I couldn't have done it without Yoke, BT and Dart who were, as Yoke put so well, virtually holding my hand throughout the entire period.Ã,  They spoiled me.Ã,  They were so quick and eager to work hard you would have thought I was holding them at gunpoint.Ã,  I eventually had to stop telling them how amazing they all were, because I ran out of words to express it.Ã,  As the hour loomed near, it became less about winning and more about just going the distance.Ã,  It was the most surreal thing EVER.Ã,  It ranks somewhere up with cramming 9 AGSers in my apartment during Mittens.

Thank you, everyone, for the great feedback.Ã,  It makes it all worthwhile.Ã,  In case anyone is interested, a behind-the-scenes irc transcript of the last hour before the deadline is here: http://www.davelgil.com/ags/toaklog.txtÃ,  It's slightly edited to remove spoilers and the bits that make no sense, but it's a nice look at what we went through.Ã,  Here's a snippet:

That's odd about saving though.  Could you describe, in detail, the actions you take when you try to save?

Good to hear about HOTU giving you guys some pub.  Very well deserved.  Two of a Kind was a pleasure to play.  A few hard puzzles, nothing too hard though.  Always interesting to get the chance to play as two different characters in the same game.

One minor quibble, really not even an issue.  At the end of the game I had the twins talk to each other and when I selected "What should we do?" the other answered back "Let's explore the mansion some more."  Eh, good advice except the ability to go back to the mansion at this point is nil.  :P  Other than that, a few spelling errors, the game was just about perfect.  ;D

Post by: Snarky on Tue 30/11/2004 03:36:01
Thanksgiving weekend gave me a chance to catch up with some of the recent AGS games. Two of a Kind was easily the best of the bunch. In fact, it's right up there with the cream of AGS games. Thanks, guys, for making such a cool game!

Going on the idea that by offering constructive criticism I can influence future games to be more to my liking, I'd like to offer a short (well, superficial, at least) review. Hope you don't mind.

Writing
Very high quality, especially the dialog in conversations. The characters have distinctive voices which provides a lot of personality without becoming annoying. It's often funny, and rarely seems like it's trying too hard. There are only a couple of misspellings in the whole game, which is up to the high standards of the other elements.

The story is surprisingly minimal. There are only three or four plot developments altogether. The intro is the weakest part. It is wasted explaining something that turns out to have no bearing on the story. While it gives a "rational" explanation for the supernatural powers seen in the game, the story soon brings in magic and demons regardless. It seems like the explanation "people have different magic powers" would have been sufficient.

There are some half-hearted attempts at character development, but they don't really go anywhere. A hint about unpleasant events in the past is nicely underplayed. The conflict is completely external to the two protagonists, and they have no real personal stake in their quest. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes the story feel a bit lightweight.

Puzzles and Gameplay
The puzzles are all pretty reasonable. The game is highly non-linear, which I found made it significantly harder than it would otherwise have been, because the different puzzles served to obfuscate each other. That's probably a good thing, but it also went some way to ruin whatever momentum the game had. A couple of the locations that show up on the map at the beginning of the game (specifically, the store and the farm) are quite arbitrary. The story doesn't do anything to explain why the characters feel like going there. It works much better when locations appear after they are referenced.

I thought there was some inconsistency in the level of hints given out given out for each puzzle, for instance
Spoiler
getting through the gate by (among other things) getting nuts for BerserkyTails from the store by wearing a funny hat by finding a replacement for the bum
[close]
seemed excessively "breadcrumbed", while the solution of
Spoiler
having Dr Love pretty up the flower
[close]
appeared to be taken out of thin air. However, I see that some people have been stuck on puzzles I thought were obvious, while there are other bits that no one but me seem to have found difficult.

One minor complaint about a puzzle:
Spoiler
If Tim tries to OPEN/CLOSE the window where the rat is stuck there is no response, whether he's levitating or not. Shouldn't he give some kind of feedback about not being able to open the window with his hands?
[close]

The gameplay is very good. The shtick of being able to switch between two characters works extremely well. Not only does it provide a different perspective on things, it's used for all it's worth in constructing puzzles. Cooperation puzzles, conversation puzzles, puzzles that rely on one character's special ability, multiple paths, even tasks where the other character has to be absent.

The balance between the characters is a bit off, though. I counted eight animals Tiffany gets to talk to, with only three places in the entire game where Tim needs to use his floating.

Interface
The interface is solid. I grew particularly fond of the follow (or, the way I used it, summon) button, which made an enormous difference in playability. I had a problem with it once, when switching to Tim while he was following caused him to materialize outside of the walkable area, but that was easy enough to get out of (switch back to Tiffany, go to another screen, and summon Tim). I didn't like that follow got turned off when you switched characters. That seemed like a bug to me.

There are a few scripting issues with the GUI buttons, too. The text in the status bar often doesn't get updated to reflect the currently selected action, especially when over the inventory. Using one inventory item with another has to be done without any feedback.

I don't much like the layout of the action buttons. It seems like an inefficient use of space, and they were unnecessarily fiddly to hit. I really wanted one (or more) of these options while playing:
-cycle through actions with right mouse button
-keyboard shortcuts for the actions
-default action on rightclick

Any of those would have made a big difference.

Kudos for a very brief, skippable, splash screen when launching the game. The save game system is a neat gimmick, and the slots are just about sufficient for the length of the game.

Other Stuff
The graphics are great, the music is great. Good work!

Overall, it's a great game. It's not quite a masterpiece, but it's a great example of a multi-character adventure, guaranteed to be referenced whenever the topic comes up in the future.

Hi Snarky,

Thanks for the comments. I definitely agree with the points that you raise about the story.  I wanted to give their "backstory" a more central role in the plot, but since I only had a few days to plot out the game I was forced to keep it simple.  In the end, we figured the strong "oil-and-water" character dynamics would be enough to pull the game through.  Hints about their past are given in various conversations, but they don't take center stage.  At some point, we will probably do a sequel where the twins' relationship and history is explored a bit further.  That has yet to be seen.

Regarding the game update.  I've fixed a number of bugs, and added something very special for the end credits sequence.  However, my home computer is being slow and stupid lately.  Getting it to do anything productive takes forever.  I've done all the things you are supposed to do to fix it, but nothing works.  I've backed up all my important stuff, and plan on re-installing windows soon.  Hopefully  I'll get a new version uploaded by the end of the week.

MY REVIEW OF "TWO OF A KIND"
Note: No review for puzzles because I can't do any puzzles at all without hints anyway.

STORY: The story is pretty good, although a bit stereotyped. I agree with that other reviewer on the intro issue, it seems pretty redundant, especially because the game gets magic involved later on anyway. This is one of the only things that could be worked on.

MUSIC: This was nice, I really have to thank BerserkerTails for this. It was all enjoyable> My favorite music was the "detective-y" music, like the splash screen stuff, the office music, and the beginning credits theme. The happy version of the office music at the end was a clever touch. The end credits track was really excellent and haunting music, but didn't really fit the tone of the game.

GRAPHICS: Nothing to say except...
Let's all give a big round of applause to Dart and Scotch!

CHARACTERS AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: This is the best part of the whole game. The characters are so vibrant, and they are funny. I could just picture Farmer Yoker, desperately seeking Tiffany's attention, begging Dr. Love for help.  ;) I was disappointed how little screen time Farmer Yoker and BerserkyTails got though. about character development... I love the way Tim and Tif change a tiny bit at the end, but not enough to really notice. It could have been less subtle though. The reason I even say this is because saaying somebody sucks at something doesn't seem like something Tiffany would do, and Tim seemed a bit more eager than usual to take on the challenge.

OTHER (or where I stick all my criticism): The game was buggy, and most of the bugs were pretty major. But my one real thing I hated about this game is was how FREAKIN' SLOW the game was!!!! The talking animations were so slow, the mouths barely had time to move at all! I tried to put it at 320 x 200 and turn off the anti-aliasing of scaled-down sprites, but the game wouldn't let me! This was most noticeable in the room with the demon.

So that's it. A little buggy and slow, but overall, it still wins my Seal of Approval.

EINOO'S SEAL

OF APPROVAL!

Hi Einoo,

What happened when you tried to change the resolution?  I can't think of a reason why the game wouldn't let you.

I am aware of the bugs.  Most of them are fixed.  I recently reformatted my home computer (backing up the source code, of course) but it seems to have destroyed my internet connection.  I am working on getting that fixed so I can upload the new version.

There seems to be a bug that nobody has mentioned, yet it's a real problem for me. Just as you answer the phone call, and try to leave the office (this is in the beginning - and it happens for both Tim/Tiff), the screenshot of the door with 'Walters & Walters' written on it appears - the game freezes and the mouse icon disappears. I've tried the 'Follow' command, turning off the music/sound, both resolutions, and full/window mode. Nothing works.

I'm about to give up on this game...:( Any help would be appreciated, thankyou.

Hi Krys,

Does the music/sound play at all for you?  The credits are, I believe, timed to the midi music so if the music is disabled then you might have trouble here.  Does the music in the office play?

Hey!! I finished the game....!! about 30 secs ago  ;D

AWWWWESOME!  :D

liked it all, specially that you can control two players! (its the first ags game ive played with that feature  :) )

im a musician too, just like to say to whoever composed it that the museum song is the best! the others are a bit common, but works fine for a game thought. Sorry if someone asked this before but: who made the credits song? a member here or its a professional song?  ::) (lol could be someone in this forums, you never know  ;) )

was a great pleasure playing the game! congrats again!

Here... I'll type them out... Let's see if I can still remember them!

Red, like the blinding of a light
Darker than the coldest night
But nothing compares to the
Hue of Itchy Eyes

Drops, like the rain falls from above,
Like the pain of shattered love,
But nothing compares to the
Sting of Itchy Eyes

But, what of the morning
And the sun's gentle warmings
Bring beautiful rays
But, on these days I feel nothing but

Pain, which does hunt me like a shark,
Let me rest throughout the dark,
But nothing compares to a
Life with Itchy Eyes

There you go. Hahaha, I love how popular that song has become. I mean, I wrote it about my allergies, haha!

I finished it and I think it's definetly one of the best games this year. :) The multiple character system worked out great and allowed for some very interesting puzzles.

I have played most Dave Gilbert "solo" games before and I liked them all, but this team effort even surpasses them IMO. It pays off that there is a kind of specialist for everything in the team and that there is no part that lags behind. The story, music and graphics just melt into one homogeneous experience. This is truly a great example of team work.

I've noticed one little "bug" that wasn't mentioned before I think: There's a character scaling problem in the mansion's cellar (just walk along the right wall). I might be a bit nitpicky here, but it just stuck out, considering the high quality of the graphics and animations.

And more thing... Could you offer the Itchy Eyes for download as an MP3 file?

I just finished this one, and would like to give credit to the creators for making such a great game. A lot of creativity went into this, and the game kept surprising me. :D

If anything could have been better, maybe some of the puzzles should have been more connected to the plot - they were connected, but some of them didn't make sense until quite a while after they were completed (at least not to me), so that gave the feeling of "backward puzzles" (It's a bit like ending up in bed with a nice woman but not understanding how you did it). Anyway, they were mostly very good. The music was of high quality also, only thing I wanted was a tad more variation, and unfortunately the tune I liked the least was on the map screen, so it came back every other turn (sorry about the sentence, I'm not english...). Also, animation (esp. walkcycles) could have been more smooth, but what I really liked was that there were lot of work put into animating the heroes while solving different puzzles, and for the cutscenes. You don't see that every day. The story was very good, and that end song was perfect (even if it's about allergia.. np). The whole twins-concept was brilliant, and could even have been explored some more...

To me this one, among with Apprentice 2, Ben Jordan 3, Cirque de Zale and 7 Days a Sceptic, should be nominated for AGS Game of the year. Keep it up guys :)

I guess the old movie cliché "Never work with animals or children" is true for adventuregames also. Those bees gave me the worst headache... Apparently the bugs (no pun intended) aren't quite kicked out of it yet. Have many others experienced this problem?

I will re-script this game sometime in the future, I promise! ;)

Errors like that tend to happen if a character who's got a character following follows another one. I had a problem like that in City of Fortune, too.

To fix it, you'll have to make sure the bees don't follow Tiffany anymore if Tim's the leader. For example, you could make them move back to the hive when characters are switched and Tim is in a different room than Tiffany, or just code a custom follow thing.

Anyway, this game was great. Make more, please! :D
Title: Re: Two of a Kind - v1.01
Post by: YOke on Fri 31/12/2004 00:02:02
I probably could have coded the bees in a simpler way. As they are in the game they are separate characters following an invisible "Queen Bee", randomly patrolling around her. The Queen will then be set to follow the character with the flower.
This game was the first "complete" game I've ever coded in AGS and I learned a lot from the experience. The bees were a pain, as my teammates will all tell you, until the bitter end. The constant recoding while under the added pressure of a deadline made for some interesting scripting, and the final version is really just the original with a bunch of patches on it.Ã,  :-X
The problems seemed to finally disappear, but apparently a special set of conditions can still bring them back.Ã,  ::)

I'm very happy about the way the game turned out, but there are some n00bish errors in there that hopefully I alone am being annoyed by.  :=

Oh, and by the way: I distracted the bees with the flower, got tim to get the honey, talked to Yoker as tiffany, did some random searchings as Tim, and now Tiff can't move.  :(

Very nice game! :D I loved it, except for...
Spoiler
...the zap-the-bird-to-get-the-antenna-to-free-the-rat-to-get-the-password-puzzle. Well, perhaps that's just me, but it didn't make much sense too me, and as it came quite early in the game, the game frustrated me before making me like it. Unwilling to resort to clues, I probably wouldn't have finished it, if not for a friend of mine who assured me that it would be worth it. O.K., in the end, it was worth it, but that doesn't make me like the puzzle, which I only solved using trial & error.

So, what didn't I like about it? Well, if all you want to do is to pry open the window, then there has to be something more suitable for that job: a branch from a tree, a baseball bat (this is America, after all), a broomstick (I'm sure Tiffany has one to keep her half of the office clean) or even the neck of an ornamental garden ostrich, but not an antenna, especially if the twins seem to be reluctant to steal from the Gilberts, let alone vandalizing their store. I mean, I suppose the game wouldn't have allowed me to THROW ROCK AT ANTENNA (if there had been rocks in the game that is) in that situation, would it?

O.K., once I had the the antenna, it was very nicely hinted what I had to do with it (first when I picked it up and later when I tried to use it on the rat), but I had no idea of its purpose until then, I only grabbed it because after some trial and error I did end up with an antenna and as an adventure gamer, I have to pick up everything that isn't nailed to the ground (and sometime even things that are).

Getting the antenna makes it even more "surreal". Talk the bird into sitting on the antenna, so that the antenna breaks down, when you zap it. Huh? Why did it do that? It was obviously able to support the bird weight before so why does it collapse when he falls down? And I was always bad at physics, but you fiddling with the signal amplifier in the house causing enough voltage to build up at the antenna for the bird to notice seemed more than a little strange to be, but as I said, it might be my lack of electronics knowledge. Don't worry, I know that adventure game physics don't always matches up with its real live equivalent.

I could make the connection OPEN WINDOW -> FREE RAT -> GET PASSWORD and USE AMPLIFIER -> AFFECT TV SET (OR TV ANTENNA), but MOVE BIRD -> ZAP BIRD -> GET ANTENNA -> USE ANTENNA, was obviously beyond me. Hmmmm, had I simply talked to that stupid bird more than once, I might have avoided some (a lot of) frustration and maybe wouldn't have thought about that puzzle so much to write several paragraphs about it. Before and after that, the other puzzles seems reasonable enough and they were neither too hard nor too easy.
[close]

Now I feel bad a bit, because my enjoyment (now that I've finished it) greatly outweighs my dissatisfaction, but this post makes it look as it if was the other way around. Let me assure you, it is not! Well, actually, it is (first sentence), it's not the other way around, that's what it's not (second sentence). ;) Story, writing, graphics, music, interface and the rest of the puzzles were all nicely done. I hope my criciticism was at least constructive and you continue to make games as good as this one. :=

P.S.
If I notice any bugs, should I post about them here, PM one of the developers (which one) or write an e-mail?

I think i found a bug: If you click load at the title screen and then new game, the load gui just kinda stays there... not going away.

Great game so far. It's the GUI that bothers me, like I can't right click to look etc. It doesn't automatically switch to walk after each command... But then again I suppose it wasn't meant to be LEC.

I'm running v1.01 on Windows XP, Athlon 64 with a gig and a half of RAM.  The sound hardware is crappy on-the-motherboard type from SoundMAX, and I don't know if it works well with other software that using MIDI.  I've got Pro audio hardware for working with Pro Audio apps, but I use the built in crappy sound for games..

The music won't play for me either, EXCEPT that it -does- play when I hit Alt-Tab and subsequently hold the ALT key down.  So if I want to hear the audio for a new location, that's what I do..

Am I running an old version?  Has this been fixed or has the problem really even been identified?

Anyway, thanx for a fun game!!  And I really did have to use some hints from this forum.  Hope me mentioning the music problem helps get it fixed somehow.  All the other problems I've encountered so far have been mentioned.. like the action text not changing until the mouse moves off from the bottom of the screen, or Tim/Tiff getting suspended in mid-air.

Cheers!

But thank you for the compliments, I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

Not sure why this worked, but I got midi working.  Changing the AGS Game Settings to use the Win32 MIDI Mapper (instead of the Default MCI Music Device) didn't help.  But now I've got it set back on the Default MCI and I changed my windows audio properties MIDI music playback settings Default device to the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth (rather than the SoundMAX Wavetable Synth) and MIDI music is working!  Hooray!

This information may be useful to other users, and may belong in the readme, who knows..

Thx again!

I've been wondering... has the "everyone has an unusual ability" thing inspired by Xanth? I've been toying around with the idea of making a game with the same idea (or even a Xanth-Fan-Game), but scapped it for various reasons (mainly because I'm a horrible artist).

Actually it was inspired by the "Alvin Maker" series by Orson Scott Card.

Use 'Float' with Tim and open the top cupboard in the kitchen.

Um... actually, this is a mystery to me as well.  The file has totally disappeared.

Fortunately I managed to find the game file and I am reuploading now...

I've downloaded the ZIP file, but when I open it in winzip, there's nothing in it. When I try to 'Extract here' with 7-zip, a message comes up saying that it's not a supported archive.

Plus, in the download page it says that this game is 10mb but when I downoaded it. it's 3,058kb hmmm...

I really loved this game, I hope you are still thinking about making the sequel! I really got to like the characters and desperately want to see more of them! ^_^

Not to mention all the unanswered questions about them! More please!  ;D

I did see the bug where one of the characters appears in a wall or inaccessible area, but this was easy to fix. Didn't get any crashes or bugs that seriously effected the game though.

Thanks for putting in the effort.
