Title: vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: Captain Mostly on Sun 08/06/2003 16:50:57
I made a non-adventure game

it is hosted at

http://www.angelfire.com/ex/vegetablepatch/

It's one that you'll have to invest some time in, as you need to get used to it before you can get the higher scores. First person to beat the built-in high score get's a prize...

(also, any constructive comments would be much apreciated, as I'm not sure how well I've managed to explain how the game works...)

I got 421902 points!

Seems like a fun game so far, just started playing after watching the tutorial.

A few minutes later.. I love it :)
Good work, best non adventure AGS game I've played.

Still not sure how most things work though ;)  Like cross pollination..

should'a mentioned I want evidence for those top scores of yours...

BUT:

While I hate to piss the both of you off, I've now uploaded a version of the game with helpful colour-coding (as requested by my house mate) so you can tell exactly what stage of growth the plants are at all the time...

Plus there're a few bug-fixes in it (ALREADY!!)

Ah :|
I pressed menu.. thinking it wouldn't quit my game.. I thought the quit button would do that ;)

Ah well, I guess I'll start again when I have time.  And get the new version

EDIT:

APOLOGIES:

YET ANOTHER BUG FIX!!!

I swear this is the last time I upload it, as I've checked ALL the maths over-and-over and I KNOW it's right this time...

How is this for proof? By the way, I like the game, it's pretty well though out.

lol...

I guess that'll have to do for proof... now I'll have to think up a prize!!!

(B.T.W. is that on the newest version? It won't invalidate your prize if it is, I'm just wondering)...
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: D · Y · D · O on Mon 09/06/2003 10:36:42
No, I guess it's the oldest version. I never re-downloaded the game.

Post by: D · Y · D · O on Mon 09/06/2003 10:42:24
You should wait with that prize, by the way. I'm sure people are capable of much higher scores, because I didn't even try that many times (third game?).
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: Captain Mostly on Mon 09/06/2003 10:44:02
well, it's really worth it if you do, as now the maths works properly (oops!)  and a LOT of bugs have been taken out...

Plus there's those handy squares to help you identify to status of each plant...

anyway, I tried to e-mail you about your prize just now, but it got returned!!! Could it be that the mail address in your profile is either fake or out of date?!?!?!

I got 23,000 or something like that, neat-o idea, I especially liked the cool instruction gui...

Interesting. I got the score of 30549. I have no clue what the hell I'm doing. Somehow I made a pea creeper. Is that good? And what does it mean when the guy says "JUJU!" Anyway, it seems to be a fascinating game.
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: Captain Mostly on Mon 09/06/2003 12:57:21
if you get him to say JUJU three times in one day, your daily multiplyer goes up 1.

as for pea-creepers, they're pretty good. But a fauxtato is better...

Post by: Andail on Mon 09/06/2003 13:41:54
This whole concept really fascinates me, since I've always liked the idea of one day creating a strategy game, and this is like one step in that direction...

Additionally, I've always been a fan of the wacky mostly-atmosphere...I have this funny feeling the whole crazy game is just a hoax or something :)

I'm going insane. This game is addictive.

Post by: Captain Mostly on Mon 09/06/2003 18:02:56
that's a pretty damned impressive score!!!!

More bug fixes coming in:
This time I fixed it so that you CAN pick fixit seeds (it seems this function got deleted some-where along the line!!!)

d.y.d.o   lol I just checked the maths of your score, and it seems the version you've got was doing the maths right all along!!! Something crazy's clearly been going on with this code!!!

I don't think there are any other bugs to fix, but you never know folks!!!
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: D · Y · D · O on Mon 09/06/2003 19:29:23
The 1.3 million score was done with the latest version. I downloaded after you advised me to.

It takes a shitload of fauxtatoes and pea-creepers. OMG, I've even got the slang down :)!
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: Captain Mostly on Mon 09/06/2003 19:33:52
I bet it does!!!

Out of interest, how much effort do you put into getting lumptatos (if any)? I suspect that what's holding me back is the fact I keep aiming for these, and forgetting about pretty much everything else... but they are worth a LOT of points... is it worth it?
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: D · Y · D · O on Mon 09/06/2003 19:46:04
Guess that's why you made this game and I'm just a simple player. I haven't been able to get a lumptato, but I'm guessing that I had one by accident in the last screenshot (the blue seed?).

To be honest, I haven't really put in an effort in getting a lumptato, because pea-creepers seem to do the trick so far. The large advantage is the fact that in their prime they're worth lots of points AND supply me with 3 seeds. I'm still wondering how many points a lumptato is.

My latest score has been: 2063381.
Again, great game, both simple and complex, and very, very addictive.

i love it.. would play it til i die if my girlfriend wasnt here now..
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: Andail on Mon 09/06/2003 21:02:17
hehe, although it's rather silly, it's getting addictive...

I got him to say HUJU nine times one day, but still my points is pretty week compared to you guys...

The Pea-creepers seems to do the trick, however

Is there a way to reckon the highest possible score, Mostly?

Post by: Captain Mostly on Tue 10/06/2003 10:12:18
I have no idea what the highest possible score would be, and I don't even know how to begin to work it out...

You can't pick lumptato seeds (I was simply asking if you used them out of interest D.Y) they are worth 16 points per fruit before multiplyers, and at their ripest they have 4 fruits on them. Pea-creepers are only worth 4 points per fruit (before multiplyers) and if you leave them long enough you can get 9 fruit off each plant...

so lumptatos are technically worth more than pea creepers, but they take longer to produce (you need to do several cross polinations) so are they worth it?!!??!

EDIT: Just fixed the bug where you always get 2 fauxtato seeds, even when you picked it in it's 1 seed stage... You now only get the two seeds when you wait for 2 seeds to be visible...

LATER:
I have added shading on my version of the game to hint at which squares start with higher multiplyers attached... I haven't uploaded this version yet, as it's not backwardly compatable with your old save games, and I'm not sure if anyone thinks it's worth the effot. If people say it'd help I shall replace the downloadable zip AGAIN (I'm only making changes according to what people tell me would make the game easyer... and I really didn't expect this many suggestions... thank poo YOU lot aren't suggesting things!!! We could be here all figgin' year!)

Well, I will do, but I don't know how it can really expand on what I've put in the instruction section of the game already...

I'm writing it now, and will upload it (and the newly re-coloured grid) later

WOO WOO! I got my first million! (and I could have done so much better if I hadn't screwed up and let loads of things rot in useless squares!)

also:
I uploaded the version with a read-me file, and the (admittedly subtle) colouring changes.

This game is more addicting than crack.
Even if my high score is less than a thousand.

This is a very fun game, although I think I've found a way to unbalance it. I just scored 9318582 points.

Wow, this is really weird to admit (and it's probably due more to the fact that I have just got a new mouse)but I think I have sprained my thum playing VP Extreeme Turbo.
Even lameryer, top score so far is only 30456.(edit to: 146320)(edit the edit to : 486381)

(Great game Cap'n, really fun!!)

come on fuzzpliz. You gotta tell me how you un-balanced it so I can spoil your fun...
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo

Pea-creepers and golden plums. Lots of them.
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: Captain Mostly on Sat 14/06/2003 23:04:59
Hmmm... I'm not sure if that IS cheating... I guess It'll need looking into before I ruin that... I should switch the plums with the fixits so it's harder to get the ones that last...

any thoughts?

EDIT:
Having just had a go at the plums-and-peas tactic, I've decided that tomorrow I will swap the fixit's with the plums, as it IS much too easy... I apologise for the constant up-dates, but this is the price you have to pay for balanced game-play...

EDIT EDIT:
I've updated the cros-polinations. Now I've swapped round when you get plums and fixit's (this actually makes more sence, as fixits are only really tactically interesting if they're easy to get...)

I'd like to ask everyone to play the new version, and tell me if there are any new bugs, or if it's still pretty simple to scam it out of millions and millions of points...

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No seriously, it is.

On a scale from one to ten, this is 78.
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: Captain Mostly on Tue 17/06/2003 12:19:50
well thanks!

I've made some MORE changes (this time I've put the colour coding on the main page, and re-weighted the scores, so that it's more worth-while getting the better vegetables)

Your high scores will average higher now, but I want you to let me know if it's now TOO weighted towards getting that lumptato...

thanks!!!

EDIT:
FOR FUCKS SAKE!!!
What is with that fucking GUI?!?!?!
Sorry about this folks. There's nothing I can do about it this evening...
I'll keep you posted, and fix it as soon as I can

I think I'll wait to redownload this when the updating slows down a bit ;)

In any case, great job, Mostly with keeping up with the fans and updating!

lol! Well, I'm not VERY happy about all these constant up-dates, but I hope that when I upload the next version (in abou half an hours time) it will be the lastest one (because I intend to start work on the sewuil tomorrow, and I don't want to be constantly re-touching this one 'till everyone's happy)...

From now on, I shall only update if someone finds a bug, or if the scoring system is revealed to be hidiously off-balance, as I'm pretty satisfied that I've made the game easy enough for everyone FINALLY (sheesh!)

EDIT:

RIGHT! I've uploaded the now-far-too-easy version of the game, and am officially starting work on the sequil, so post here if you find bugs, but apart from this, the game is staying the same from now on!!!

Heh, someone could just photoshop their score   ;D.
Anyway, this game sounds exiting! I'll tell you how I like it when I'm done downloading.

Edit: THIS GAME IS AWSOME. I played it nonstop for a couple of hours! Very original and classic game.

Well I'm pretty damn glad YOU like it squinky!!! At least that means you're not trying to secretly sabotage the sequil (although I'm going to have to cheach each drawing you've sent for subliminal messages etc)   ;)

naturally, I jest.

thanks agsking! Thanks EVERYONE who's said nice things!

I just went back to this today at my parent's house. I got 233million and something points and it was entirly fair. I am VERY pleased with the balancing of this game...
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: Captain Mostly on Fri 15/08/2003 20:44:20
shameful though this bumping of my own thread is, could someone please remind me how large the largest possible integer is.

I've been getting scores in the region of 1500,000,000 in this game recently, and on one particularly impressive occasion appeared to score a fairly wopping minus number. I figured that either I'd maxed out my integer, or there was an under-lying error in the maths of the game!!! Either one was a fairly nasty prospect, since VPXT2 also has an integer score, and it's a lot easyer to get big points in that, so maxing it out would be an issue I'd have to deal with. And if there's a problem with the maths... Well... I don't know WHAT I'd do!
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: Gilbert on Mon 18/08/2003 03:39:12
From the manual (Text Script Functions -> Script Language Keywords, that part is kind of discreet, right?):

char -  Single byte data type, can store a single character or number -128 to 127
short - 16-bit integer, can store numbers from ?32,768 to 32,767
int - 32-bit integer, can store from ?2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647
string  Stores a string of up to 200 characters

And yes, numbers ~ the  150,000,000 range is out of bound for int type now.
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: Captain Mostly on Mon 18/08/2003 22:20:47
interesting... So there's no Long integer then? (i.e. longer than 2,147,483,648)
Title: Re:vegetable patch extreem turbo
Post by: Gilbert on Tue 19/08/2003 02:35:35
I don't think so, as it's not listed in the manual, unless CJ added it as an unsupported hidden feature.
As CJ wrote the scripting engine himself, if there're such thing, he would add it into the manual himself.

One way around it is to use 2 int variables, and check constantly with something like that:

if (low>99999999) {high++;low=low-100000000;}

and display the score with something like:

if (high) StrFormat(score, "%d%d", high, low);
else StrFormat(score, "%d", low);

Of course these are just rough codes, and I don't guarantee them to work good, you may need some tweaking. Such codes still cant overcome the problem if in "one-go" the "low" variable had exceeded its limit.

thanks for the hints and thinkings, I may have to take this over to the technical forum now though (otherwise I'll get in trouble for talking technical in an announcement zone!!)
