so here are 2 backgrounds waiting for suggestions, criticism etc.
the backgrounds still need some touch ups ( rock highlights blurring )
everything is supposed to be MI1 style.
Both shots are quite good. At first glance, I thought they might've been modified screen-shots. I think you've got a good grasp of the overall style of the first game.
For both backgrounds, I think they could use a touch more detail (making the cliffs a bit more smooth, maybe adding a little bit to the water, roughing up the cave floor a bit). The ocean's color blends a little with the cliff-face but that might be remedied by adding wave-details, just something to break it up a bit.
For the character, I think he looks just a bit too rigid in the top idle pose. His arms are hanging from his shoulders in such a way that it looks like he might've been hung from a hook. A bend of the knees might give it less of an, "I'm doing a dramatic pose" look. I'm exagerrating a bit, not to be insulting but to emphasize what I'm talking about.
Even if you did nothing else to these backgrounds and didn't change the character, I think that they would make game graphics to be proud of. You could very easily leave 'em alone and move on to the next rooms.
Yup... as Yaksplit said, you must ask yourself when finishing a background... is it enough detailed? If you answer "No" you´ll probably be inmersed in a neverending orgy of remaking your backgrounds again and again... and not advancing in your game production.
I think they could be more detailed, though... At a glance it seems EGA. take a look to ripped screens of monkey Island and see how the artists solluted the cliffs...
BTW, very great and inspiring work!
I like them, although I think the cave looks a little too "clean" or "neat" or something....mumble, mumble......
This is quite nice. I like the old-style-MI1 look :)
i like.
nice work!
one question, is that character a paint over Guybrush MI1?? It is a great paint over, but the hair gives it away :D
well, yes it is :) not actualy a paintover but i heavily based him on guybrush to get the right stance and animations.
ohh.. i also need a nice name for him. any ideas ?
Bobwood Gurzelfrunk...
