Title: 3D backgrounds for RPG
Post by: Gord10 on Sun 05/09/2004 08:45:05
Hello :)
I'm working on a RPG called Asporia: Hidden Threat. Your decisions will change the end of the game. It will use pre-rendered 3D graphics for backgrounds with Half-Life engine. I'm using the models-textures of Counter Strike, They Hunger, Medieval World and Half-Life. Also there will be cut-scenes with cinematical camera pitches.

And new ones:

This is an outpost castle.

And entry to an underground tunnel.

And I need RPG themed mouse cursors.

EDIT: OK; resized them with the script.

they're quite nice. i think this comment has been made before, it seems very jaggy and textured. because you don't need to worry about framerates, can you not put in much more detail?

Thats probably because its "in" the HL engine. They look good, I cant wait to see the game, I dont suppose you have any HL mapping experience Gord?

Yeh, as you don't have to worry about r_speeds, you could do with putting a lot more detail in..

I know that half life editing and using hammer is fun and all but have you ever thought about using an updated engine?
The test of time has really taken its toll on the blocky half life engine.

Doom3's engine is really easy to learn plus the dramatic lighting effects could really add a twist to your game.  plus as others have said you dont have to worry about r_speeds or your FPS when you are taking a screenshot so just let your creativity fly

that stuff being said I really like what you have done. that castle is beutiful aswell as thos forest pics  7/10 *'s

Thanks. Maybe I use other game engines for my games in the future. By the way, I need advices for the 3 decisions which changes the end of the game. I'm not sure they sound nice. (Hided them, because they can spoil the game.)
Spoiler

a) You see your commander wounded as in the 4th screenshot. He says that Alzakhar, the vampire mage in the game, has bitten him and he will become an undead. So he wants you to thrust your sword into his heart to kill him. If you do this, you will gain a RP point.
b) You see a ranger wounded. He wants you to heal him. If you do this, you'll gaine a RP point and he will mention you about the charmed crystal; which he takes to the Flea Castle, and the Black Poison is looking for.
c) You need to heal the ranger and have the crystal to activate this decision. You see Alzakhar in the end of the game and he casts a spell over you which makes you get as numb as not able to fight. He wants you to give him the crystal, or he'll bite you and you'll become an undead. If you refuse it you will gain a RP point (but you'll have to fight him) (but first, you must drink an elixir which Commander Scorth gave you to cure the spell) . But if you give it, he won't do anything to you and disappear.

why not try using the Unreal editor, I know its a bit specific, but once you get used to it, its fairly easy an you could make a nice lighted level and screenshot the editor window when running it ingame?
Its great for indoor scenes, but outdoor means messing with awkward skybox's.

Here's a cave, made by me, in about 15 mins using some light sources, a heavily edited sphere, and some static meshes.

It looks cool, What happened with the other Half-life engine game you were making (It was you was it not?)
I'm just curious but is there any specific reason for the sudden influx of RPGs?

Lost In The Nightmare still continues. I didn't give it up. The reason I'm working on this game is that I've joined a mini RPG competition, with 1 month time span, in my country. I'll continue the other game later.
The cave looks nice, Clueless3 :)

Why is nobody suggesting a scene designer  or modeling software??

This render engine was designed to draw polys in real time, & 7 years ago.  They're awfully dated now.

If you want to go 3D, what about Vue or Bryce.  There might be a price issue with Vue, but Bryce is pretty affordable.  You could have a group of friends pool your money.  Then get Blender - FREE, or Truespace - Cheap for models, or of course ebay for the big stuff!!!

Because if Gord has mapping exprience then it is better that he uses the programs he knows.

+1 :)  By the way, the game is almost finished. I'm working on the endings and the translation of the game.

That's good to hear that the games almost done. What is the original translation that you have and what translation is it going to be?
