Title: 3D backgrounds I scrapped
Post by: esper on Sat 03/09/2005 08:20:43
These were going to be the backgrounds for ESPER: The Town on the Edge of Darkess, but I determined that since I couldn't makea decent 3d character that using the 3D backgrounds with a 2D character would look kinda crappy. Made them with the free version of Caligari Truespace:

The cabin of the boat. Note the strange portholes. Originally I had made them with a square brush, but they didn't seem to show up, so I used a round one and they did. Unfortunately, in the final render they showed up... Better late than never...

The church, from the door looking in. I was originally going to make this a first person game, so I started you off far away and then you walked to...

here. I LOVE this one in comparison to the one I actually used in the game, save for that door, which looks totally out of place.

Then you turn around and face the door, which AGAIN for some reason shows that doors don't like being rendered in 3D scenes.

Right up on the door now, going back outside.

And finally, what was going to be the title screen. Notice the church on the desk.. That is the model I made to use as the outside of the church, but I never rendered it as such.

NOTE: On the books are the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, a picture of the All-Seeing eye astride the unfinished temple made by my pal Ravean, and the book that is standing up behind the others has YHWH written in Hebrew letters... supposedly, this is the most holy name of God, and I thought it would be in place in a game about an anti-occult team of investigators.

wow, these looks nice!

im also making an adventure game in 3d, but with max. im not familiar with truespace.

i like the atmosphere in the church, awesome. now, if u could get some nice lights comign throught the windows to make it more spooky.  ;D

since this is in the critics lounge, ill have a go.  ;) as ive said im not familiar with truespace, but i would make the textures have more wear and tear. its seems a bit clean, especially in the 1st one. its also nice to paint ure own textures. i usually unwrap, then texture, but i dont know if that works with truespace. also, some of the textures seems a bit stretched. like the ceiling of the church.

if u wanna see some of my screenshots, pm, and ill send them to u.   :D

Thx.
For some reason, I couldn't get the light to come through the windows. I made a couple bright dark blue lights outside shining down at an angle, and a red light behind the stained glass window. The red light came through, but the blue did not. I had to makea purple light outside the boat, too, to simulate moonlight, but it only came through the bulkhead and not the portholes.

You should try Truespace. They have one of their older versions for free download on their site (www.caligari.com) and then give you a wicked discount of the newest version. Just make sure you make a temp email address to get your registration code, because then they spam you endlessly.

the renders look nice...
but you should try rendering using global ilumination and also softer shadows...also try imrpoving the shaders and textures

Ahha. Now we get to the heart of your comments on my game. I would point out that my game style and art is COMPLETELY different from this. Just because 3D didn't work for you doesn't mean that it can't work for anybody.
